Bishop Sarah Mullally asks politicians to avoid ‘the Punch and Judy of politics’ at National Prayer Breakfast
Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin, the current chaplain to the speaker but soon to be Bishop of Dover, opened the event, followed by the Speaker himself, John Bercow.
The annual event held in the Palace of Westminster has previously had speakers such as Tim Keller and Andy Hawthorne from The Message Trust.
This year, as guests tucked into their danish pastries and mushroom and chive frittatas, the Rt Rev Sarah Mullally spoke about the need to look past binary politics and see those who disagree with us as someone made in the image of God.
After a reading of Genesis 1 by Conservative and Christian peer Baroness Berridge, the Bishop of London said: “We risk submitting one binary narrative for another – one in which the main fault lines are cultural and generational, encapsulated by the networked Metropolitan youth versus the old left behind.
“Now, whether or not you agree with this analysis, one of the key issues seems to be the use of binary narratives. The right versus wrong and the report [by St Paul’s Insitute] calls for a politics and a broad public discourse based on a different language, a transcendent conversation, one that can address deeper discussions around questions of meaning, identity, belonging.

Alaska Gov. Slashes Court’s Budget by $334,700 after Pro-Abortion Funding Decision
The pro-life governor of Alaska has found a creative way to pay for court-mandated abortion funding: take it out of the judicial branch’s budget.
Alaska Gov. Michael J. Dunleavy, a Republican, issued a line-item veto Friday removing $334,700 from the budget of the Alaska Supreme Court and the state appeals courts – four months after the Alaska Supreme Court ruled the state could not prohibit taxpayer funding of abortion.
“The Legislative and Executive Branch are opposed to State-funded elective abortions; the only branch of government that insists on State-funded elective abortions is the Supreme Court,” Dunleavy wrote in a veto message. “The annual cost of elective abortions is reflected by this reduction.”
The federal government, he noted, also “prohibits any federal funds paying for elective abortions.”
The Alaska Supreme Court in February struck down a 2014 law that limited public funding for abortion as part of Medicaid funds. The law, the justices ruled, violated the “Alaska Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection.”
Jim Minnery, president of Alaska Family Action, applauded the governor’s action. Alaska Family Action is a pro-life group.

Christian teacher speaks of mental health ‘crisis’ in schools following call for more help for kids
A growing number of young people are experiencing problems with their mental health in the face of growing pressures from exams and social media.
Mental health charity Mind claims that three out of five secondary school pupils have either experienced mental health issues themselves or know someone close to them who has.
Research has shown that more than half of 11 to 19-year-olds don’t feel confident reaching out to staff at school for mental health support.
According to the charity’s survey, of the pupils that did speak up, 43 per cent didn’t find the help useful.
Principal of the Christian run River School in Worcester, Tim Crow, told Premier: “There’s no great surprise in those percentages, distressing and disturbing as they are, our experience is that there is a shortage of resources to help these kids.
“There’s a crisis I think, in mental health.”
Mr Crow said the issue was difficult as teachers are already under increasing pressure within the school system.
He said: “Kids who are struggling, actually asking for help, they need somebody who they feel is more approachable, more of a mentor than a guardian.
“I think teachers have such huge pressures on them, that to actually duplicate that is asking a huge amount.”

The pace of decline for many churches is accelerating. The stats are quite alarming. Today, we cover a recent post on the topic.
Some highlights from today’s episode include:
- Corporate prayer in many churches is often more perfunctory than fervent.
- If your church is anchored to traditions of the past, it won’t move forward into the future.
- Church fights are signs of inward focus. Churches with an outward focus often fight less.
- Churches are becoming more open to outside consultants because they’re realizing that they need outside eyes to help them minister in the future.
The six reactions we discuss are:
- We need fervent prayer more than ever in our churches.
- Our church leaders and members must let go of the idols of the past and traditions that hold us back.
- If we are not focused and intentional on evangelism and sharing the gospel, we are little more than a religious social club.
- We must stop fighting each other and understand who the real enemy is.
- Church leaders should humbly seek interventions of coaching and consultation to see how God might lead us in fresh and exciting directions.
- I have seen too many churches breakout in God’s power to maintain a defeatist attitude. The One who resurrects the dead can bring any church back to life again.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Allegedly Screamed at Border Patrol Officers While Visiting the Southern Border
Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is alleged to have burst out in rage during a recent visit to the southern border.
In a highly-emotional trip to assess the conditions within immigrant detention facilities, the outspoken politician claimed that women were being forced to “drink out of toilets,” – something that has been categorically denied by Brian Hastings, the deputy chief of Border Patrol.
During the course of touring the detention centers, the Democrat reportedly became extremely aggressive with border agent staff.
“She comes out screaming at our agents, right at the beginning [of the tour] … Crying and screaming and yelling,” one witness said, according to the Washington Examiner. “The agents, they wanted to respond, but they held back because she’s a congressional delegate. But when you have someone yelling at you in a threatening manner … They were like, ‘Hey, you need to kinda step back.’”
AOC took to Twitter later to respond: “To these CBP officers saying they felt ‘threatened’ by me – They were literally discussing making a GoFundMe for an officer who attacked my (sic) on my tour,” she wrote.
“They confiscated my phone, and they were all armed. I’m 5’4”. They’re just upset I exposed their inhumane behavior.”

Beijing Offers Support for Embattled Hong Kong Chief Executive, Slams Protesters for Violence – Urban Christian News
HONG KONG (AP) — China’s government strongly backed Hong Kong’s embattled administration Tuesday, saying pro-democracy protesters who occupied and vandalized the city’s legislature committed “serious illegal acts” that endangered the social order.
Chinese state media broadcast video of police in Hong Kong clearing protesters from the streets earlier in the day in a break with their silence over days of demonstrations that have challenged Beijing’s authority over the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Beijing condemned the acts that saw several hundred demonstrators smash through glass and steel barriers to enter the building on Monday night, defacing portraits of lawmakers and spray-painting pro-democracy slogans in the chamber.
China’s central government voiced support for Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam and the city’s police force in dealing with the incident in accordance with law, Geng said.
“The violent attacks … are serious illegal acts that trample on the rule of law and endanger social order. We strongly condemn it,” Geng told reporters at a daily briefing.
