Atheist Group Says School Can’t Organize Prayer Support for Sick Girl

Atheist Group Says School Can’t Organize Prayer Support for Sick Girl

A Michigan high school has removed a video of community members praying for a coach’s ill daughter after complaints from an atheist group.

In August, members of the community came together to form a “family circle” on the football field and support and pray for a young girl named Harper, who is the daughter of the Lake City High School head football coach. She is in the hospital suffering from a severe intestinal infection.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist group, says the event was unconstitutional because it included a public prayer. The high school subsequently removed the video to avoid more controversy and a possible lawsuit.

“The school district can get involved in a number of ways but if it involves sponsoring religion they can’t be involved,” Freedom From Religion Foundation legal fellow Colin McNamara told WPBN/WGTU television.

He added, “The First Amendment Establishment Clause forbids government actors from endorsing religion.”

But members of the community are now upset.

“Outside factors should stay out of our community,” Bruce DeBoer, owner of the Tasty Treat, told the television station. “At that point in time this was to help a young girl everyone supported it.”

Signs saying “#HarperStrong” can be seen throughout the town.

Officials from the school released a statement implying they…

Church of England will not be saviour to Wonga borrowers

Church Commissioners, who oversee the organisation’s mammoth £8.3 billion investment fund, said on Friday that they “are not as well placed as others” to take a deal forward.

It follows days of talks, spearheaded by the church, aimed at finding a group of buyers for Wonga’s £400 million loan book to prevent it falling into the hands of unscrupulous loan sharks.

While it was highly unlikely the church would have been directly involved in the purchase, it had been working to bring a consortium of non-government organisations and philanthropists to organise a buyout.

But the church said on Friday: “The Church Commissioners for England today also confirmed their non-participation in a potential buy-out of the UK loan book having concluded that they are not as well placed as others to take this forward.”

It added that “confidential approaches” may now be made by parties from the charitable and finance sectors for the loans.

The church was urged to get involved following intervention from MP Frank Field, who called on Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby to find “good people” to buy Wonga’s loan book.

Existing borrowers are thought to total around 200,000, and Mr Field said he feared they could be left at the mercy of money lenders and bailiffs who could purchase the debt at a knockdown price.

He said swift action by the…

An Alabama School No Longer Allowed to Pray over Loudspeaker Before Football Games

An Alabama School No Longer Allowed to Pray over Loudspeaker Before Football Games

A complaint was filed against an Alabama school for praying over an intercom before high school football games.

According to CBS 42, student and volunteer-led prayer will no longer be allowed over the Blount County School District’s intercom as a result of a complaint by an organization outside of the community.

Superintendent Rodney Green said the district made the decision after speaking with attorneys to discern their options. Instead of prayer, the school will now pause for a moment of silence before each home game.

Reportedly, many residents are upset to hear about the change, noting that for many years they had grown accustomed to prayer being said over the loudspeaker.

“One of our youth actually led the prayer over the P.A. system and that was last week,” said Scott Wortham the youth minister at one of the community’s churches, First Baptist Church in Remlap.

“We really see no harm in praying for the welfare of our football players, and those that will be out playing, protection, and good sportsmanship,” said Wortham.

“I feel like we as Christians are being silenced and so we have to go with the majority that is very loud,” said Alecia Melvin, who also lives in Blount County.

Other area schools have also been threatened with lawsuits by outside organizations recently, the lawsuits arguing that those who do not want to be subjected…

Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz Prays for Nick Foles in the Locker Room

Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz Prays for Nick Foles in the Locker Room

Last December, just weeks before the Super Bowl, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz tore his ACL and LCL. On Sunday, however, the starting quarterback is finally returning to the field.

After sustaining his injuries, Wentz was taken out for the rest of the season, leaving backup quarterback Nick Foles to lead the Eagles to the franchise’s first Super Bowl win.

Many expected there to be rivalry and tension between Foles and Wentz as Wentz was welcomed back as starting quarterback, but according to Inside the Iggles, this is not the case. Instead, CBN reports, the two were grateful for one another and praying for each other’s success.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Wentz said to CBN. “It’s been quite the grind of an off season. There’s a lot of excitement, a lot of built-up almost anxiety over when it was going to be that time, and almost relief finally being cleared to get back out there.”

CBN News sports reporter Shawn Brown recently spent time getting to know the duo and recalled that “their faith keeps them grounded.”

“It’s a competitive sport but they have a really really unique relationship that’s rooted in their faith in Christ,” Brown explains. “These guys get it. They understand each other’s roles. Nick knows that he is a backup.”

Brown recently interviewed Eagles head coach Doug Pederson and learned that the two quarterbacks…

Former Willow Creek pastor says church can survive Bill Hybels claims

Steve Carter said he become physically sick last month after reading allegations in The New York Times (NYT) that Mr Hybels had engaged in sexual impropriety with a former assistant, Pat Baranowski.

Mr Carter, 38, told the Religion News Service (RNS): “I felt like my body was shutting down.”

The NYT article, which Mr Carter described as “a breaking point”, was published five months after the Chicago Tribune revealed claims of misconduct against Mr Hybels involving a number of women.

The 66-year-old denied any wrongdoing but apologised for being “unwise” and potentially misleading people.

In one case, a woman suggested Hybels summoned her to his hotel room and kissed her while on a trip to Sweden in 1998.

Another accused him of “a lingering hug” which made her feel uncomfortable while another claim suggested he’d invited a woman to his house, but only while his wife was away.

Mr Hybels, who had previously announced his intention to retire in autumn 2018, stepped down early following accusations published in the Tribune.

Willow Creek has faced criticism over its handling of the claims made against Mr Hybels.

In a statement released three days after the NYT article, the board of elders admitted an investigation in Mr Hybels was “flawed” and they apologised for their response to the accusations.

Mr Carter, who had been due to succeed him as lead teaching pastor, announced…

What Harvard study says about kids raised in church

A new Harvard study investigated the health and mental health of children and teenagers who were raised with religious or spiritual practices. What they found was fascinating.

Those who attended religious services at least once a week as children or teens were about 18 percent more likely to report being happier in their twenties than those who never attended services. They were almost 30 percent more likely to do volunteer work and 33 percent less likely to use drugs in their twenties.

In addition, people who prayed and meditated individually on a daily basis had more life satisfaction, were better able to process emotions, and were more forgiving. They were less likely to have sex at an earlier age and to have a sexually transmitted disease.

The Forbes article reporting on the study concludes: “Some of the fundamental habits that humans have been doing for eons (praying, meditating) might actually have a lot more value than we tend to think.”

By God’s design, a divine-human partnership is essential to human flourishing. Consider an example.

“A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!”

The future of Israel was in jeopardy. A massive Midianite army numbering 135,000 troops (Judges 8:10) was ready to annihilate the Jewish forces. Gideon mustered 32,000 soldiers, but the Lord led him to dismiss all but three hundred (Judges 7:2-8). God’s purpose was to show the Israelites that their deliverance came from the Lord and not from their hand.

Armies in the ancient world conveyed signals through “trumpets” (usually rams’ horns). They often marched at night to the light of torches. Gideon’s original army had three hundred such trumpets and torches. The torches were carried inside clay jars so as not to alert the enemy, then the jars were broken when the assault was to begin. The trumpets were used to convey orders to the troops.

Gideon’s forces advanced on the Midianite army, each carrying a torch in one hand and a trumpet in the other…

Five Types of Infrequent Attendees

Podcast Episode #469

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play • iHeart Radio

Declining attendance isn’t as much of an issue in churches as declining frequency of attendance. Today we discuss those who miss frequently and how to solve that.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • For the Christian, corporate worship should not be considered optional.
  • Too often, people miss church for reasons that would not keep them from missing work or a recreational event.
  • Don’t let your church’s structure drive its mission.
  • If you have leaders in the church who consider corporate worship optional, they probably shouldn’t be a leader in the church.

The five infrequent attendees that we discuss today are:

  1. The fading church member
  2. The “church is just another activity” church member
  3. The unbeliever/seeker
  4. The anti-structure church member
  5. The special events only church member

Seeds of Destiny 21 September 2018 – The Blessing of the Anointing

Topic: The Blessing of the Anointing [Seeds of Destiny 21 September 2018 Daily Devotional]

Scripture: But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil….The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Psalm 92:10-12

Thought For The Day: The Anointing processes a person into an enviable status in life.

Our anchor Scripture makes it clear that to be anointed by God is to be blessed by God. The anointed state is the blessed state of life; the Anointing processes a person into an enviable status in life.

Now, when I say, “Anointed by God”, I do not only refer to pastors or apostles but to every child of God that will press into God and connect the Anointing of God. You can walk in that Anointing as a doctor, lawyer, civil servant or tailor, etc.

We are going to look at the blessedness of the anointing in four dimensions.

1. The Anointing Comes with its Portion or Allocation. There is no unction without a portion. The implication of this is that the Anointing connects a person with supernatural supplies. (Psalm 92:10–14).

2. The Anointing Comes with a Crown (Leviticus 21:12). The Anointing establishes a person in royalty.

3. The Anointing Comes with Honour and Dignity. Anointed people are honourable people. When Samuel, an anointed prophet of God came to the house of Jesse, the Bible says the elders of the town trembled at his coming (1 Samuel 16:4). There is something anointed people carry that makes cities tremble.

4. The Anointing Comes with Favour and Opportunity. Anointed people are favoured people. Things work for them easily (1 Samuel 10:1,4).

Beloved, I declare the release of the fresh Oil that will shift you to the realm of unlimited supplies, favour, honour and dignity, in the Name of Jesus.

Remember this: The Anointing processes a person into an enviable status in life.

Assignments:
1. Make demands on the Anointing of God upon your life.
2. Press into God’s Presence in prayer and worship.

Prayer: O Lord, I make demands on the Anointing that will shift me to the realm of unlimited supplies. Make me a channel of blessing in my generation, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Amazing Fact: Your body has enough iron in it to make a metal nail 3 inches long

Today In History: 21/09/1981 – The U.S. Senate confirmed Sandra Day O’Connor to be the first female justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Daily Reading: Isaiah 37:1 to 38:22, Galatians 6:1 to 18, Psalm 65:1 to 13, Proverbs 23:24.

Quote: One verse of Scripture you understand will move the anointing you are operating in, to another level. Culled from MAKING FULL PROOF OF MINISTRY by Dr Paul Enenche.

Joyce Meyer Devotional 21 September 2018 — Faith Has No Expiration Date

Topic: Faith Has No Expiration Date [Joyce Meyer Devotional 21 September 2018]

“Do not remember the former things, or ponder the things of the past. Listen carefully, I am about to do a new thing….” — Isaiah 43:18-19 (AMP)

Faith is the evidence of the things that we do not see and the proof of their reality (see Hebrews 11:1). Faith is what we have while we are waiting for God to answer our prayer and provide what we need. But what if God takes a long, long time to answer? That is when waiting can become difficult, and that is also when our faith is tested.

I am currently waiting on at least seven things I have prayed about, and they are all things I have been waiting on for a long time, some of them for years. As I was feeling a little disappointed yesterday about having no answers yet, I was reminded that faith has no expiration date, and if it does, then it is not faith that can endure testing.

Faith means that we not only ask God for something, but also that we must trust Him to be the head of the “ways and means committee”! He chooses the way to answer us and the timing to do so. In the meantime, we get to be patient, or we can at least learn to be patient! I am still learning, and perhaps you are also.

Let me encourage you today to know that although God probably won’t show up in your timing, He promises not to be late. Don’t just trust God for something, but trust Him all the way through the process it takes to get it. Don’t let your faith expire!

Prayer Starter: Father, thank You that I have faith while I am waiting for a breakthrough in my situation. Help me remain faithful, even as You are faithful! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 23 September 2018 Lesson Four – Jesus: The Only Way

RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 23 September 2018 Lesson Four – Jesus: The Only Way

TOPIC — Jesus: The Only Way

OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to follow You, the true way to the end. (Scroll down for RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL 23 SEPTEMBER 2018 HYMN)

MEMORY VERSE: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” – John 14:6 (scroll down for RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL 23 SEPTEMBER 2018 HYMN)

BIBLE PASSAGE: John 3:1-21 (RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 23 September 2018)

1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Many people are lost and aimlessly wandering in the wilderness of life. Unfortunately, they may not realize their states of helplessness and hopelessness because the devil has blindfolded them. John 12:40; 2 Corinthians 4:4. Thank God! There is a way out for you.
