Christian Writing Conferences Uncover an Onslaught of Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Christian Writing Conferences Uncover an Onslaught of Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Allegations and complaints of sexual misconduct toward women in the Christian writing and publishing industry have recently come to light.

According to Publishers Weekly, accusers have come forward with claims ranging from “accidental” touching to being pinned against walls and groped, and from inappropriate “mentoring” relationships to requests for sexual favors.

The list of men in the Christian publishing arena who have recently been accused of sexual misconduct, includes publishing professional Dennis Hensley, literary agent Chip MacGregor, magazine editor Ben Wolf, and writing mentor Jeff Gerke.

In late 2017 Christian writers conference directors contacted one another to discuss attendees’ recent reports of unwanted sexual advances. By January 2018, the directors were able to detect behavioral patterns and pinpoint the names of abusers. Now they are taking action.

In July, one of the accusers, Dennis Hensley, faced allegations which led to his resignation from Taylor University in Upland, Ind. Hensley was frequently in attendance at Christian writers conferences and directed the Professional Writing program at Taylor University. Reportedly, Hensley resigned from his post at Taylor due to an investigation into what the university called “significant and credible allegations of serious misconduct.”

Publisher’s Weekly reports that…

Over 250 Nigerian Christians Killed by Fulani Radicals in Two Months

Over 250 Nigerian Christians Killed by Fulani Radicals in Two Months

On September 14, two Christian boys were murdered by Fulani radicals in Nigeria, making the total number of lives claimed by this violence over 250 in just two months.

According to International Christian Concern, the bodies of Ntyang Pam Danjuma, 9, and Mesheck Dalyop Kang’ageda, 10, were found riddled with bullet holes and machete slashes.

Reportedly, local police are looking for attackers who they believe are Fulani Muslim radicals.

“The Nigerian government continues to be complacent in dealing with the problem of the Fulani militants, who have in 2018 killed nearly three times as many people as Boko Haram,” ICC said.

“If they do not ensure the safety of all of their people, they are going to have continued fighting that will increase as communities decide to defend themselves and their families.”

Human rights groups in Nigeria, including the International Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law, have warned citizens that jihadists are presenting themselves as Fulani farmers and then massacring Christians and burning down churches.

In August, board chairman of Intersociety Emeka Umeagbalasi, told The Christian Post that the Nigerian government is trying to characterize these murders as conflicts between farmers and herders. But what is really happening, he said, was a calculated attack designed to kill and drive Christians out of…

Professor in Sweden Under Investigation for Teaching the Fact of Biological Differences Between Men and Women – Urban Christian News

A professor in Sweden who recently spoke about the biological differences between men and women says he’s now being investigated by his university.

Germund Hesslow, a professor of neurophysiology at Lund University, is speaking out about how his employer has launched a “full investigation” into his remarks about the biological realities of gender.

According to the Sweden-based Academic Rights Watch, Hesslow has taught a course for years on “Heritage and Environment” in the Lund University medical program. In that course, he has addressed such topics as biological gender differences.

The watchdog organization reports that Hesslow would sometimes be questioned by students who don’t like that his teaching is not based on “the gender scientific approach adopted in politics.”

Hesslow maintains that gender is not entirely socially constructed because empirical research has found that there are statistical gender differences in behavior that are biologically based.

Hesslow told ARW, which was founded to monitor “attempts to restrict the fundamental rights of teachers and researchers,” that he was asked by school administrators this month to apologize for his remarks on gender and LGBT people that drew the ire of feminist students who complained.

Hesslow fears that there are “forces in leadership” who seek to hire another teacher to teach the course that he has developed over the years.

In a statement emailed to The Christian Post about Hesslow’s claims, Lund University’s international press officer, Lotte Billing, said:

“There has been criticism levelled…

Franklin Graham Says Accusations against Kavanaugh Are ‘Not Relevant’

Franklin Graham Says Accusations against Kavanaugh Are ‘Not Relevant’

Evangelist Franklin Graham talked with CBN on Wednesday about the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, deeming them “not relevant.”

Graham said, “It’s just a shame that a person like Judge Kavanaugh who has a stellar record — that somebody can bring something up that he did when he was a teenager close to 40 years ago.” Graham continued, “That’s not relevant.”

Graham went on to say at this point, Kavanaugh should be evaluated based on his adult life and confirmed based on his qualifications.

Last week, Christine Blasey Ford, a professor at Palo Alto University in California, accused Judge Kavanaugh of pinning her down and groping her at a high school party in the 1980s.

Ford sent a confidential letter to members of Congress in July containing her claims, but it was not until last week that the letter was submitted as evidence. A few days later, on Sunday, Ford publicly identified herself through The Washington Post.

Kavanaugh has “categorically and unequivocally” denied the allegations.

According to his interview with CBN, Graham believes these allegations are an attempt by Democrats to derail Kavanaugh’s confirmation proceedings, something many conservatives have openly agreed with.

“They couldn’t find anything else in his record and so this is just an attempt to smear him and to smear his name…

Dozens Buried in Philippines Chapel by Landslide in Typhoon Mangkhut Are Most Likely Dead – Urban Christian News

Officials fear that dozens of miners and their families who were buried inside a chapel in the Philippines after Typhoon Mangkhut hit on Saturday are all dead.

Victorio Palangdan, the mayor of Itogon town, said that although rescue workers are digging through mounds of mud, rock, and debris, there is a “99 percent” chance that all inside the chapel are dead.

The Times reported that more than 40 bodies have been recovered in the landslide triggered by the typhoon, with officials saying that 61 people in total from a nearby gold mine are either dead or missing.

NBC News added that the landslide that hit the chapel buried much of the remote community.

Local miner Roel Ulani said that community members are risking their lives to try and dig out those buried, including those in the chapel.

“We have to try,” Ulani said. “We have to try to return these people to their families.”

As the conditions have blocked roads, however, rescue workers do not have much hope when it comes to getting heavy equipment into the valley to help in the efforts.

National Police Chief Oscar Albayalde noted that officers have been sent to help with radar life detectors, harnesses, digging tools and other search and rescue equipment.

Typhoon Mangkhut reached sustained winds of 124 mph and gusts of up to around 200 mph. Besides the 54 people killed in the Philippines over the weekend, the typhoon skirted past Hong Kong and made landfall in China, killing another four people.

Professor Under Fire for Refusing to Write Recommendation Letter for Student to Study Abroad in Israel

Professor Under Fire for Refusing to Write Recommendation Letter for Student to Study Abroad in Israel

A professor at the University of Michigan is receiving backlash for refusing to write a recommendation letter for a student applying to study abroad in Israel.

Associate digital studies professor John Cheney-Lippold, initially agreed to write a recommendation letter for his student Abigail Ingber, but when he realized that she was applying to study in Israel he rescinded his offer.

In an email to Ingber he wrote, “I am very sorry, but I only scanned your first email a couple weeks ago and missed out on a key detail.” He continued, “As you may know, many university departments have pledged an academic boycott against Israel in support of Palestinians living in Palestine. This boycott includes writing letters of recommendation for students planning to study there.”

“I should have let you know earlier, and for that I apologize. But for reasons of these politics, I must rescind my offer to write your letter,” he added.

Cheney-Lippold concluded the email saying he’d “be happy” to write a letter for her under a different circumstance.

A copy of the email was posted on social media by Club Z, captioned, “An unbelievable email from a University of Michigan professor, who has refused to write a letter of recommendation for a student because she will be studying abroad in Israel. We hope that the U.S. Department of Education will…

Boko Haram Executes Aid Worker in Video, Says Christian Girl Leah Sharibu Is Next – Urban Christian News

Boko Haram extremists in Nigeria have executed a female aid worker on video and warned that others, including a Christian teen girl, are next.

The video, according to Christian Solidarity Worldwide, was released by the Barnawi faction of Boko Haram. In it, the terrorists tie up and shoot from behind 25-year-old Saifura Husseini Ahmed, a midwife with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Ahmed had been abducted back in March along with another ICRC worker and a UNICEF nurse. An unnamed radical describes the video as a “message of blood,” and accuses the Nigerian government of ignoring written and audio messages.

The man warns that “the other nurse and midwife will be executed in similar manner in one month, including Leah Sharibu,” referring to the schoolgirl who was taken in February.

Sharibu, who has refused to renounce her Christian faith and embrace Islam as a condition for her freedom, has become the face of several international campaigns around the world.

Eloi Fillion, the head of the ICRC delegation in Abuja, said the relief group is “devastated” by the murder of its worker.

“Saifura moved to Rann to selflessly help those in need. Our thoughts are with her family and other loved ones at this incredibly difficult time,” Fillion said.

He urged the captors to release the other women, colleague Hauwa Mohammed Liman and UNICEF’s Alice Loksha.

“Like Saifura, they are not part of the fight. They are a midwife and a nurse. They are daughters, a wife, and a mother — women with families that depend on them,” he said.

“Their families and friends…

Chris Pratt on Proclaiming Jesus: ‘I’m Not Going to Change’

Chris Pratt on Proclaiming Jesus: ‘I’m Not Going to Change’

Chris Pratt has gained a reputation as the actor who talks often about his Christian faith, and he says he plans on keeping it that way.

Pratt made headlines this summer with an MTV Movie & TV Awards acceptance speech that mentioned prayer, grace, the soul and God – and even referenced the blood of Christ.

Pratt told the Associated Press he hopes his words help change lives. He also says he feels “called” to talk about faith.

“That kind of a message, it might not be for everybody,” said Pratt, who is known for his roles in the Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy film series. “But there is a group of people for whom that message is designed. And nothing fills my soul more than to think that maybe some kid watching that would say, ‘Hey, I’ve been thinking about that. I’ve been thinking about praying. Let me try that out.’ That’s like the only way I feel like I can repay what has essentially been a giant gift in my life.”

Asked if speaking publicly about Jesus feels risky in Hollywood, Pratt said it doesn’t.

“I think that there’s this narrative that exists out there that Hollywood is anti-Christian or anti-religious, but it’s just not the case,” he said. “They are kind of not anti-anything. They are kind of pro-whatever is authentic to you. And I like that. Because it’s authentic for me to be pro-Christian,…

(Screenshot: Reuters)Bono and Pope Francis during a meeting at the Vatican on September 19, 2018.

Bono, the lead singer of rock group U2, met with Pope Francis at the Vatican Wednesday where the two talked in part about the multiple child sex abuse scandals.

Bono spoke with the Roman Catholic Church leader for more than 30 minutes, the Catholic News Agency reported, where the singer said that Francis was “incredibly gracious with his time, his concentration.”

He told journalists that the two “let the conversation go where it wanted to go,” and that they discussed big themes, such as sustainable development and environmental goals.

The Irish icon admitted that they also touched upon the sex abuse scandals that have been sweeping through the Catholic Church around the world for decades, including in the U.S. and Ireland.

Bono said that he and Francis “inevitably” spoke about “the pope’s…

200 Couples in the UK Cite Addiction to Video Game ‘Fortnite’ in Divorces – Urban Christian News

At least 200 couples in the UK have cited addiction to the wildly popular “Fortnite” and other online games among the reasons for their divorce since the start of 2018.

Earlier this month, Divorce Online, a British company that offers divorce services and resources noted in a blog post that since January 2018, they received some 200 divorce petitions where addiction to “Fortnite” and other online games were cited among reasons for divorce.

“Addiction to drugs, alcohol and gambling have often been cited as reasons for relationship breakdowns but the dawn of the digital revolution has introduced new addictions,” a spokesperson for the company said.

“These now include online pornography, online gaming and social media, so it is no surprise to us that more and more people are having relationship problems because of our digital addictions,” the spokesperson added.
