Ariana Grande thinks bishop touching her at Aretha Franklin funeral was an ‘accident’, police say

Detroit Police Capt Jevon Johnson told the Free Press they approached the American star’s representatives following phone complaints.

“We received some phone calls from citizens and saw (social media posts) that there may have been some kind of inappropriate contact at Aretha Franklin’s funeral between Bishop Ellis and Ariana Grande,” Johnson explained.

“We reached out to her representatives. They said she completely took it as an accident and was ready to move on.

“Based on what her representatives stated, we do not have an open investigation.”

He added that while they hadn’t spoken personally to Grande, they had sent a “certified letter to her” but “have not received a personal response yet”.

Bishop Ellis has apologised for how he touched the 25-year-old singer and said in an interview with the Associated Press that it would “never be my intention to touch any woman’s breast”.

More than 90,000 tweets with the hashtag #RespectAriana circulated the web with viewers expressing their outrage after the incident occurred.

64 Dead after Typhoon Hits China and Philippines

64 Dead after Typhoon Hits China and Philippines

On Sunday, Typhoon Mangkhut ripped through China after devastating the northern Philippines. The Typhoon brought strong winds moving at 127 mph with gusts up to 158 mph, and heavy rains that left at least 64 people dead and dozens more potentially buried in a landslide.

According to the Associated Press, more than 2.4 million people were evacuated and relocated in southern China’s Guangdong province and around 50,000 fishing boats were called back to port.

Reportedly, the coastal region of Macau closed its casinos for the first time ever.

Mangkhut made landfall in the Guangdong city of Taishan around 5 p.m., bringing with it 100 mph winds. According to the state television broadcaster CGTN, the storm surge caused a seaside hotel in the city of Shenzhen to be flooded.

Authorities in southern China issued the most severe warning, a red alert, to the region. The national meteorological center said the region would face a “severe test caused by wind and rain” and encouraged officials to be prepared for a disaster.

Videos have appeared online showing some of the damage from the storm. One video from Hong Kong, shows the top corner of a building break off. Another video features a tall building swaying dangerously from the strong wind.

According to the AP, the storm caused a variety of damages including, broken windows, felled trees, and waist-high flooding in some areas.

Cathedral Known for ‘Beyoncé Mass’ Features Giant Tree People in Climate Change Service

(Photo: Facebook/Grace Cathedral, San Francisco)A performer portraying an Ent-like creature during Grace Cathedral of San Francisco’s Global Climate Action Summit Multi-Faith Service on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018.

An Episcopal cathedral in California that recently garnered headlines for holding a Beyoncé-centered service held a worship service featuring individuals portraying giant tree people.

Grace Cathedral of San Francisco held an interfaith worship service last week that was part of the multiday Global Climate Action Summit.

In addition to different religious groups participating in the service, a group of people portraying tall Ent-like creatures were part of the ceremony, including the closing processional.

The seat of the bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of California, Grace Cathedral lists the issue of “climate change” as one of its social justice outreach efforts.

“Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time. It already adversely affects many lives, especially among the world’s poorest people and nations,” the church says online. “It is a spiritual and religious issue as much as a political and social one; the earth is loved by God, created by God, in-dwelt by God and we are called to care for it.”

The service garnered criticism from across the…

Where in the World Is the Refugee Crisis? – Urban Christian News

A look at the people called “refugees” and the places they live

Daniel still remembers the screams — sharp cries, punctuated by the sound of gunfire. He remembers the way the ground cut his feet as he ran from the village. The scars are still there, physically and emotionally. They remind him of the day the militia came to his home … the day that changed his life forever.

Daniel is just one of the 65 million refugees around the world who have lost everything. Like most refugees, Daniel lived a relatively normal life before the militia arrived. He had a family, friends, and a home. He helped out in his village by pulling weeds and tilling the soil. He was just a normal 12-year-old boy living in South Sudan.

But like most refugees, normal came to an abrupt end when he was forced to leave everything behind.

The dictionary defines a refugee as “one that flees.” This broad definition does little to describe why people leave and where they go. Each refugee’s story is unique; however, they all have one thing in common: they have all been uprooted from their homes and they are all desperate for help.

What makes a refugee?

You’ve probably heard a few different terms when it comes to describing the global refugee crisis. You may wonder what the difference is between a refugee and an asylum seeker. Or perhaps, what does it mean when the media talks about displaced people?

In 1951, the United Nations held a Refugee Convention; 145 state parties agreed that a refugee was someone who “owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion,…

Kids Raised Religiously Have Better Health, New Study Finds

Kids Raised Religiously Have Better Health, New Study Finds

The Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health published a new study that found that kids and teens who are raised religiously or spiritually, tend to have better physical and mental health as they age.

The study was published last week in the American Journal of Epidemiology and finds that people who pray or meditate on their own time were at lower risk of substance abuse and depression later on in life.

The researchers looked at data from sample sizes ranging from 5,681 people to 7,458 people. Their participants were from the Nurses’ Health Study II and its next-generation Growing Up Today Study (GUTS) and were observed over the course of some 14 years.

According to the study’s abstract the group was interested in “the associations of religious involvement in adolescence (including religious service attendance and prayer or meditation) with a wide array of psychological well-being, mental health, health behavior, physical health, and character strength outcomes in young adulthood.”

The researchers were able to draw the conclusion from their data that children who attended religious services at least once a week were about 18% more likely to report being happier in their 20s than those who did not attend services. The same children were also around 30% more likely to do volunteer work and 33% less likely to use drugs during young adulthood as well.

Paige Patterson Returns, Blasts Women Who Falsely Accuse Men in #MeToo; Accused of ‘Body-Shaming’

(Screenshot: YouTube)Paige Patterson, 75, speaks at the AWAKEN Conference in Las Vegas, NV, in January 2014.

Ousted evangelical leader Paige Patterson returned to the pulpit last week, where he blasted women who falsely accuse men in the #MeToo movement.

Writing for The Washington Post, journalist Jonathan Merritt reported on Patterson’s return to preaching last week at a revival in Pisgah, Alabama, months after he was ousted from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Texas over allegations of mishandling sex abuse.

Patterson resigned from his position as president of SWBTS in May following numerous controversies, including comments made in 2000 about how the Bible sees women and why spousal abuse isn’t grounds for divorce.

Last week, he preached on the biblical story of Joseph, who was falsely accused by an Egyptian woman of sexually abusing her.

The 75-year-old preacher then talked about the current movement in society where various male leaders in church, in politics, in Hollywood, and other institutions are being accused of abusing women.

“I’m all in favor of the #MeToo movement when there is a guilty party,” Patterson said, insisting that men who abuse women are cowardly.

“By the same token, I have nothing good to say about a woman who falsely accuses a…

100 People in Nigerian Flooding; Death Toll Expected to Rise – Urban Christian News

Nigerian authorities say 100 people have died in flooding after heavy rains in recent days.

A National Emergency Management Agency spokesman tells The Associated Press that the deaths have occurred in 10 states and that the toll could rise.

The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency say rising water levels will be higher than those recorded in 2012, when flooding killed 363 people and displaced over 2.1 million.

The agencies have warned that 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states will be seriously affected by severe flooding.

Some of the worst affected areas are along the Niger River. Its water level is expected to rise substantially if water is released from the Lagbo dam in Cameroon as Nigerian authorities anticipate.

Here’s Why Christian Colleges Must Deepen Relationship With Pastors, Local Churches

(PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK)Nearly half (48 percent) of pastors say they would recommend a Christian college or university to high school students who are applying to college for the first time.

Because churches are important connection points between faith-based institutions of higher learning and prospective students, Christian and Bible colleges must work to deepen their relationships with pastors, a study has suggested.

Together with the Association for Biblical Higher Education, the Barna Group asked nearly 1,000 American pastors from a variety of denominations, regions and church sizes to find out their views of and experiences with Christian educational institutions in a study titled “Why Go to College?”

Nearly half (48 percent) of pastors said they would recommend a Christian college or university to high school students who are applying to college for the first time, and one-third (34 percent) said they would recommend a Bible college. However, when they consider congregants who are interested in pursuing ministry, church leaders were about equally likely to say they would recommend a Bible college (41 percent) and a Christian college or university (42 percent).

More than half of pastors reported recommending a Bible college to someone in their church congregation (56 percent), and nearly six in 10 advocated applying to a specific Bible college (57 percent).

Barna found that most pastors view Bible colleges to be training centers for future pastors, missionaries and theologians. In contrast, Christian colleges or universities are seen as appealing to students who want an education with a…

Fear of Ebola Keeps the Faithful at Home in Congo

KAMPALA, Uganda (RNS) – Thousands of faithful in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are staying home from church services to avoid contracting or spreading Ebola.

“We are staying in our homes. We can’t go to church and worship together as Christians,” said Daniel Sango, who spoke to Religion News Service by phone from Mangina, 24 miles southwest of the town of Beni in North Kivu. “People are afraid of contracting the virus. Many are listening to the gospel of God on radio stations.”

Thousands of churches remain closed in the country’s eastern regions as the Ebola virus continues to spread. Since August, when the latest outbreak was declared in eastern Congo, 137 confirmed or probable cases have been registered, including 92 deaths, according to the country’s health officials.

In a bid to contain the virus, religious leaders and officials have urged residents not to meet in big numbers.

Earlier this year, three Ebola patients left a treatment center in the northwestern city of Mbandaka and attended a church service, where they came into contact with other congregants. The three patients were later found dead in their homes.

“People should not meet in big number either in church or elsewhere,” said pastor Sarah Kalenga of the Church of Jesus Christ in a telephone interview from Mangina. “We are finding ways to end the spread of the virus. People should pray from their houses and God will answer those prayers. We are trusting in God, but we should not tempt him.”

Ebola, which is spread through close contact with the…

We Are Not Paying Bill Hybels’ Legal Fees; Anonymous Donor Funding Investigation

(Photo: Facebook)Willow Creek Community Church founder, Bill Hybels.

Willow Creek Community Church has added a FAQs page on its website that addresses the investigation of sexual abuse women allegedly suffered at the hands of its founder and former pastor Bill Hybels.

The Illinois megachurch released the FAQs on its website Sunday, which talks about the Elder selection process, financial and legal concerns, the investigation, and leadership changes.

To the question of whether the evangelical church is paying the legal fees for Hybels, who resigned prematurely in April following sex abuse allegations that he denies, the church answered:

“No, Bill is responsible for his own legal fees for any causes against him personally. If in the event a claim is brought against Bill in his capacity as an employee of the church, the church’s insurance carrier would likely cover his legal fees.”

Willow Creek has had a turbulent time over the allegations of sex abuse regarding Hybels. Its entire elder board resigned back in August after admitting that it had made a mistake when it initially chose to side with Hybels rather than believe the women.

The allegations go back decades, and accuse the former senior pastor of various types of sexual misconduct, including unwanted sex acts on a…
