Dallas Billboard Urges Black Women to Get an Abortion

Dallas Billboard Urges Black Women to Get an Abortion

A Texas organization is being criticized for promoting an “abortion war against black women” with a new billboard in Dallas.

The billboard shows three smiling African American women on one side with a message on the other side that reads, “Black women take care of their families by taking care of themselves. ABORTION IS SELF-CARE.” It is sponsored by The Afiya Center, which calls itself the only “reproductive justice” organization in “North Texas founded and directed by Black women.”

Pro-life advocate Abby Johnson, who once worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic, posted a picture of the billboard on her Facebook page with the message: “The abortion war against black women is so real.”

Her post sparked nearly 700 comments – most of them outraged at the sign.

“This black woman right here took care of her family BY taking care of her babies,” Bethany McLachlan-Reed, who is African American, wrote. “Such ridiculousness.”

Another person, Deanna Freeman, said the phrase “self-care” should never apply to abortion.

“I’m sorry but self care is a bubble bath. A pedicure. A hot cup of coffee,” Freeman wrote. “I don’t understand how the term ‘self care’ can even remotely be construed as applicable in reference to abortion.”

Christian charity teaches sewing to lift women out of poverty

Open Doors have placed partners in the country to teach women the skill in schools, free of charge.

Rebecca Coatsworth from the charity told Premier about the people they want to help.

“Women in India who become Christians find themselves quite often rejected by their family, by their communities because of their faith,” she said during Premier’s News Hour.

The sewing schools have been set up in remote villages in central India. After graduating from the school, most of the ladies are able to earn a living by working in tailor shops.

Coatsworth shared a success story about a 36-year-old mother called Deepa, who converted from Hinduism to Christianity.

Deepa, whose name has been changed for security reasons, told the charity: “Our teacher taught us very well. I can stitch professionally. Now I stitch blouses and salwar suits for ladies using the machine.”

She said her conversion made her family and village turn on her.

“I was extremely disheartened,” she said.

“Many times I even considered returning to my old faith.”

Coatsworth explained how much the workshops help women.

“These sewing workshops are not only teaching them the skills that they need to earn a living and also run their own businesses, but they’re also being strengthened spiritually through prayer and through mentoring from the teachers at the workshops,” she added.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Told Officers to Stand Down as Confederate Statue is Toppled

Chapel Hill Police Chief Told Officers to Stand Down as Confederate Statue is Toppled

On Aug. 20, the century-old Silent Sam statue at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill was toppled over as police officers stood by. According to WRAL News, the chief of the Chapel Hill, N.C. police force ordered officers to stand down and “give them space” as the Confederate statue was pulled over.

Police Chief Chris Blue was reportedly texting one of his men orders as he closely monitored the situation from afar.

At around 9:00 p.m. Blue reportedly texted, “Do not engage w Crowd at statue. Stay way out.”

A half an hour later the statue fell.

Law enforcement quickly received backlash for their strategy for handling the protest, critics arguing that more should have been done to prevent the toppling of the statue.

According to the WRAL, Blue was paying particular attention to the potential arrival of counter-protesters to the scene.

A public relations request was sent to Blue for copies of his emails and texts from Aug. 20-21 and WRAL obtained around 400 pages of messages.

According to the text messages, Blue repeatedly asked about officers locations and appeared to be concerned about a clash between the protesters and potential counter-protesters.

WRAL reports that at 7:35 p.m. Blue texted, “Need to make sure our plainclothes guys are really looking out for counter-protesters to arrive. This thing is all over tv…

Bishop hopes for ‘spiritual awakening’ at Aretha Franklin’s funeral

The invitation-only funeral at Detroit’s Greater Grace Temple, which could last five hours, ends a week of events that included high-profile public viewings and tribute concerts.

Bishop Charles Ellis III will lead the service in front of a star-studded congregation.

“It is my goal and my aim to ensure that people leave here with some kind of spiritual awakening,” Bishop Charles said.

“This is not a concert, this is not a show, this is not an awards production. This is a real life that has been lived, that a person regardless of how famous she became no matter how many people she touched around the world, she still could not escape death.

“And hopefully, a lot of people here with money and fame and influence and friends and notoriety and wealth, hopefully they will think of their mortality and say there is something bigger than fame, there is something bigger than Hollywood, something bigger than being a recording artist and selling gold albums or what have you.”

Gospel artist Marvin Sapp, who is among the scheduled performers, said he wanted to celebrate the life of Franklin in front of a global audience.

“I really believe that this … is going to be an eye-opening experience for everybody in the world watching,” he said.

“We really celebrate because we really recognise that those we call the dearly departed, they wouldn’t want for us to cry and be sad and…

The transforming faith of John McCain

America will bid one of its great heroes farewell this weekend.

John McCain’s body lies in state inside the US Capitol Rotunda today, where his Senate colleagues and staff will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m. The public can then pay their respects from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Tomorrow, a televised funeral service in the Washington National Cathedral will begin at 10 a.m. On Sunday, his body will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the US Naval Academy.

Much will be said about McCain’s heroism as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, his lifelong commitment to serving the nation he loved, and his passionate devotion to his family and friends. Longtime colleagues in Washington will tell personal stories and pay tribute to his life and legacy.

One dimension of John McCain’s life that has not received as much media attention is his personal faith in Jesus.

“It means I’m saved and forgiven”

McCain attended an Episcopal high school in Virginia, where he participated in chapel each morning and on Sunday evenings. There he began reading Scripture and learned to quote from God’s word at great length.

However, his faith became personal when his plane was shot down over Hanoi and he spent the next five and a half years as a prisoner of war, two of them in solitary confinement. He has written that during that time he prayed “more often and more fervently than I ever had as a free man.”

When he was moved from solitary confinement, his Vietnamese captors wouldn’t give him a Bible, so he led his fellow prisoners in studying biblical passages he quoted from memory. When he married his second wife, Cindy, he joined her at North Phoenix Baptist Church. There the message of God’s grace became even more central to his life and faith.

When Rick Warren asked McCain during the 2008 presidential campaign what it meant to be a Christian, the Senator replied, “It means I’m saved and forgiven.”

In preparing for his funeral services, he chose for his…

Church rejects bid to make priests report abuse disclosed in confessions

The recommendation that priests could be prosecuted for failing to report evidence of paedophilia was a key finding in December of Australia’s

Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Australia’s longest-running royal commission – which is the country’s highest form of inquiry – had been investigating since 2012 how the Catholic Church and other institutions responded to sexual abuse of children in Australia over 90 years.

Australian Catholic Bishops Conference president Archbishop Mark Coleridge said breaking the seal of the confessional would not make children safer.

“Australian priests and the lay faithful are deeply committed to both child safety and the seal of confession, which we hold to be inviolable,” he told reporters.

“This isn’t because we regard ourselves as being above the law, or because we don’t think the safety of children is supremely important – we do. But we don’t accept that safeguarding and the seal are mutually exclusive.”

Australian state governments are increasing pressure on the church to report child abuse and are legislating to prosecute priests who maintain that revelations of paedophilia made in the confessional cannot be disclosed.

Former Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson was sentenced earlier in August to 12 months in home detention after becoming the most senior Catholic cleric ever convicted of covering up…

John McCain remembered as ‘true American hero’ at church service

Addressing an estimated 3,500 mourners, former vice president Joe Biden recalled “the sheer joy that crossed his face when he knew he was about to take the stage of the Senate floor and start a fight”.

Biden, a Democrat who was among the fast friends the Republican senator made across the aisle, said he thought of McCain as a brother, “with a lot of family fights”.

The service for the statesman, former prisoner of war and two-time presidential candidate unfolded at North Phoenix Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, after a motorcade bearing McCain’s body made its way from the state Capitol past people waving American flags and campaign-style McCain signs.

McCain died last Saturday of brain cancer at 81.

McCain’s longtime chief of staff Grant Woods, a former Arizona attorney general, drew laughs with a eulogy in which he talked about McCain’s “terribly bad driving” and his sense of humour.

The church’s senior pastor, Noe Garcia, pronounced McCain “a true American hero”.

Has the Church won the ‘War on Wonga’?

The company announced on Thursday morning that they were no longer accepting applications for loans but would continue to serve existing companies. However, by Thursday evening Wonga revealed they had filed for administration.

The news will put 500 jobs at risk and corporate undertakers at Grant Thornton have been appointed to carry out the administration.

Wonga and similar lenders have long been criticised by the church, most notably five years ago when the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, announced the church would compete Wonga out of business by supporting what they saw as more ethical credit unions – declaring not to simply lambaste Wonga but to become their moral rival.

As part of that vision, the Just Finance Foundation was set up with Archbishop Justin as their President; an organisation which aims to provide responsible credit options to all through education about banking and debt but also by supplying fair financial services themselves.

Working with the Just Finance Foundation, James Henderson is the Development Worker for Transforming Communities Together in the Black Country and Staffordshire – who work with churches to do social action, including debt counselling and preparing people for universal credit.

He told Premier how he felt about the end of Wonga loans: “I think it’s actually good news on people with low incomes. In 2014, the…

Christian businessman sued over claim he sacked worker who missed Bible studies

Joel Dahl, founder of Dahled Up Construction, is being taken to court in Albany in the US state of Oregon by ex-worker Ryan Coleman.

A lawsuit alleges that Mr Dahl, who offers building jobs to people leaving prison, made the Christian sessions a mandatory condition of employment for his staff.

Court files allege that Coleman is seeking $750,000 in compensation for “mental stress, humiliation, inconvenience and loss of enjoyment of life” his experienced.

The 34-year-old, who is also seeking $50,000 for alleged lost earnings, told Fox News: “I’m Native American and Christianity’s just not my thing.”

Speaking to National Public Radio, an attorney for Mr Dahl said the requirement to join Bible studies was lawful because staff are paid to attend. He did not dispute the claim that the sessions have been mandatory.

Chrissy Pan/Facebook

Kent Hickman said: “We believe that this requirement was not illegal.

“These are at-will employees and they were paid to go.

“It was part of their job, so they were expected to attend.”
