Christian donor responds to opt-out plan

The system would presume people have agreed – and is already in place in Wales.

The results of a study by Queen Mary University of London suggest family members would be more likely to veto a presumed consent.

Diane Franks told Premier what made her decide to give away one of her organs.

She explained: “A friend of mine in America donated her kidney to a stranger… and as soon as I heard of it, it just totally overtook me as something that is the most perfect gift you could give anyone – to save their life now without harming yourself.”

The new system for England, which will come into effect in 2020, will mean people, apart from certain groups, will be considered organ donors unless they have explicitly recorded a wish not to be.

Many organ donor systems across the world include a clause which allows the final decision to donate to be made by family members.

And families vetoing organ donation is said to be one of the biggest barriers to donation.

The authors of the study highlight figures from NHS Blood and Transplant which show that in 2010, 500 families vetoed organ donations despite being informed that their relative was on the NHS Organ Donor Register.

This led to an estimated 1,200 people missing out on potentially life-saving transplants, they wrote.

Franks told Premier the government’s proposals raised ethical…

Willow Creek Megachurch Paid $3.25M in Lawsuits Over Sex Abuse of Disabled Boys

(Photo: Willow Creek Association)Willow Creek Community Church’s founder Bill Hybels speaks to participants at a Global Leadership Summit in Lebanon via live broadcast.

Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois reportedly paid $3.5 million in lawsuits over the sex abuse of two developmentally disabled boys.

The evangelical megachurch, which recently saw its entire elders board resign over unrelated accusations that former lead pastor Bill Hybels sexually abused women, made the payments in the lawsuits over several years, court records obtained by The Chicago Tribune show.

One payment of $1.75 million was apparently made in February, while another one of $1.5 million was made last year.

Former Willow Creek volunteer Robert Sobczak Jr., now 24, pled guilty in 2014 of abusing an 8-year-old with special needs at the church, alongside an older boy not connected with the church. A year earlier, he admitted to sexually abusing another disabled boy at the church, believed to have been 9 years old.

Willow Creek said that the experience was “heartbreaking,” and insisted that it has made changes.

“We have worked with law enforcement and security experts to learn how this happened and how we can ensure it never happens again,” the church said, according to FOX 32.

The Good News Behind Good News

A note from Jim:

Drake has a heart for the nations, having lived and worked with indigenous missionaries in Kenya and Zimbabwe for two years, and regularly keeps an eye on the international news of the day. I know you’ll appreciate his article today.

***

If you were to stop what you’re doing right now to view the latest headlines, you wouldn’t see much worthy of a parade. The political climate is as volatile as ever, devastating fires are impacting the West Coast, and we’re stuck watching baseball until football and basketball season start back.

But take a closer look.

Scroll down past the main headlines to read some of the less publicized pieces.

Like the story of Ricky Smith, a thirty-six-year-old father who works at McDonald’s, Popeyes, and Circle K, and who surprised his daughter with her dream dress for her eighth-grade dance.

Or what about the NYC Public Library’s willingness to let cardholders check out neckties and briefcases for job interviews?

Try to tell Cristina Muneton, a fifty-eight-year-old ovarian cancer patient, that there isn’t anything in life worth having a parade about. Her family and friends literally held a parade for her in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida.

Stories of people doing good are out there. We just have to keep scrolling.

A story of victory

Just like the news headlines of our day, the farther we read into Scripture, the more stories of God’s goodness we find. He was good when he created the heavens and earth in Genesis 1:1. He was good when Jesus breathed his last breath as a man in Mark 15:37. He will be good when Jesus returns as promised in Revelation.

There is a lot of discouraging news in our world, but we…

Stormzy starts scholarship for two black students to go to Cambridge University

Stormzy, 25, was speaking at his former school the Harris City Academy in Croydon, south London, where A-level students are opening their results.

The rapper told BBC Breakfast: “If you’re academically brilliant don’t think because you come from a certain community that studying at one of the highest education institutions in the world isn’t possible.”

The scholarship aims to encourage the admission of more black students to top universities, after none got into Cambridge University between 2012 and 2016.

Two successful Cambridge applicants this year and two next year will have their fees paid for by the scholarship.

Stormzy, real name Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr, revealed he harboured ambitions of studying at either Oxford or Cambridge when he was at school.

He said: “Luckily for myself when I was going through school, I had the academic ability.

“I was always reminded by my teachers that I was destined, if I wanted, to go down that road and study at one of the top universities.

“I diverted and ended up doing music so it didn’t happen for me. I thought I was quite a rare case in that I knew that was possible.

Ian West/PA Wire

“That’s not always the case. When students are young, academically brilliant and getting great grades, they should know that’s an option.”

The Ivor Novello Award-winning artist offered words of…

Turkish court rejects release appeal of US pastor

The court ruled that Pastor Andrew Brunson – who faces 35 years in prison for terror-related charges, will remain under house-arrest.

The North Carolina evangelist was transferred from jail to home detention for health reasons.

Mr Brunson has received support from the White House who has imposed sanctions on two Turkish officials over his continued detention.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Wednesday that Mr Brunson is “a very good person and a strong Christian who’s done nothing wrong”.

She added that Turkey has treated him “very unfairly, very badly”.

Meanwhile, on the same day that Turkey rejected the appeal, it received international support from Qatar after the Arabic country pledged to invest $15 billion into the country.

Although the amount is a small fraction of what Turkey would need to fix its economy or pay its debts, Turkish media reported the investment as a victory for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey announced on Wednesday that it was increasing tariffs on imports of some US products, escalating a feud with America which has helped trigger a currency crisis.

The Turkish government said it will impose extra tariffs on imports of products including rice, vehicles, alcohol, coal and cosmetics. Tariffs on American cars were doubled to 120 per cent, while tariffs on alcoholic…

Leading a Revitalization or Replant When You Are Bivocational

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

Bivocational pastors often face unique issues related to church revitalization—especially when it comes to time. Today, we discuss how to prioritize the small amount of time bivocational pastors have.

Today’s Listener Question:

FROM DOUG

I am a bivocational pastor replanting a church that has about 50 people. I work full time outside of my responsibilities there and am only able to give about 15 hours to the church ministry. With that in mind what is the best way to spend those 15 hours? What’s the priority in my time management? Thanks and keep up the good podcast!

Episode Highlights:

  • Bivocational pastors need to know what kind of bandwidth they have to devote to the church.
  • There are great sermon helps out there. Use them—but don’t plagiarize them.
  • Tactical patience means knowing what to do when and waiting until the time is right to make changes.
  • One of the marks of success in ministry is a pattern of making disciples who make disciples.

The six priorities that we discuss are:

  1. Focus on equipping others
  2. Focus on sermon preparation
  3. Have tactical patience
  4. Communicate clearly your time limitations
  5. Use groups to do ministry
  6. Stay connected with other pastors

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is…

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 16 August 2018 Devotional — Run to God, Not from Him

Topic: Run to God, Not from Him [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Thursday August 16, 2018]

When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, they tried to hide from God, and they sewed some fig leaves together hoping to hide their nakedness (see Genesis 3:7).

I seem to be very impacted lately by remembering that we never have to run from God, we never need to hide, and we can be totally honest with Him about everything. In fact, instead of running away, He invites us to do the opposite and run to Him! He promises to never reject anyone who comes to Him, no matter their condition.

If you feel guilty about something or have failed miserably, run to God as fast as you can and get a hug from Him. He will forgive, restore, and set you right again. God is the only one who can help us in our times of discouragement, failure, and fear, so it is foolish to run away from the only help we have. Even if you are a little angry with God because of disappointments in your life, run to Him anyway. Tell Him how you feel and ask for His help.

Jesus is able to understand us because He was tempted, tested, and tried. He shared the feeling of our weaknesses and infirmities, and yet He never sinned (see Hebrews 4:15). Jesus knows exactly how you and I feel, and we have an open invitation to come into His presence anytime. We can come just as we are!

Prayer Starter: Father, I am so grateful for Your love and acceptance. It is wonderful to know that You will never reject me. I need You! Help me to always run to You and never to run away. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Italy Looks for Blame in Bridge Collapse That Killed 39 – Urban Christian News

As more bodies were pulled Wednesday from a mountain of jagged concrete and twisted steel left by a highway bridge collapse that killed 39, prosecutors focused on possible design flaws and past maintenance of the heavily used span, and politicians squabbled over blame.

Motorists, meanwhile, recounted miraculous escapes and the horror of seeing others plunge over the edge.

As a second night descended on the site where part of the Morandi Bridge plunged some 45 meters (150 feet), Interior Minister Matteo Salvini declined to say how many people might still be buried in the debris where about 1,000 rescue workers searched for victims.

The collapse occurred about midday Tuesday, the eve of Italy’s biggest summer holiday, when traffic was particularly busy on the 51-year-old span that links two highways — one leading to France, the other to Milan — from this northwestern port city.

Salvini declined to say how many people are still missing, and he added that trying to locate them was particularly difficult, due to the holiday.

“It’s not easy to distinguish between who doesn’t respond because they are on the other side of the world and turned off their phone to relax” on vacation, and “who’s not responding because they are under the rubble,” he said.

Italian prosecutors focused their investigation into the Genoa highway bridge collapse on possible design flaws or inadequate maintenance, as the death toll rises, hundreds were evacuated, and Italian politicians looked for someone to blame. (Aug. 15)

He said he hoped the death toll would not rise.

“Miracles are still…
