Ancient Statue Discovered During Road Work – Urban Christian News

A second sphinx from the time of ancient Egypt has been discovered, after workers accidentally dug up the renowned artefact during road works.

Engineers came to a halt after stumbling upon the a large statue, which they described as having a “lion’s body with a human head”.

They soon realised they retrieved the world’s second Egyptian sphinx, which originated as far as 2500 BC during the reign of the Pharoah Kafre in Egypt.

Mohamed Abel Aziz, the Director General of Antiquities, said the structure has yet to be removed from the ground, and remains embedded in soil until it can be properly excavated.

Members of the public can now visit the site where the sphinx was found, Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani said.

The Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt is the largest and most famous sphinx in the world, and is situated at the Giza Plateau, on the west bank of the Nile River in Egypt.

It was carved from the bedrock of Giza plateau, made out of limestone, and is said to be one of the world’s largest single-stone statues.

The ancient Egyptians regarded the sphinx as a symbol of royalty, and pharaohs would have their heads carved into stone which are then placed on their tombs.

This was known as a way to mark their relationships with Sekhmet, the solar deity, which was believed to be a lioness.

‘The Catholic Church has blood on its hands’ says abuse survivor

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse found monks covered up criminal offending at Downside and Ampleforth across 40 years.

Responding to the report in a statement released by legal firm Slater and Gordon, the victim said: “I was vulnerable, broken and needed help from the church when I was a child.

“I trusted them to help but instead my life was destroyed and I was handed a life sentence of suffering by my abuser and those who failed to act against it.”

They added: “Many people who were abused by clergy have ended up taking their lives or lived lives of self destruction because of the unbearable pain they have suffered.

“The Catholic Church has blood on its hands as a result.”

“The findings leave no doubt that there must be mandatory safeguarding reporting, nothing less. The church must cease to be its own judge and jury. The network of collusion and cover up amongst clergy has to end,” it concluded.

Richard Scorer, a lawyer from Slater and Gordon who represented several victims from Ampleforth and Downside at the inquiry, said: “The abhorrent and disgraceful abuse in the Catholic Church has once again been laid bare by this inquiry.

“This familiar and shameful story of cover-up has been told time and time again, and is a devastating indictment of an organisation guilty of gross failures on child protection.

“It is clear that the Catholic Church is woefully…

Survey Says Pet Owners Are Happier, Wealthier, and More Fit – Urban Christian News

If you think pets are the pits, you may not be living to your potential. A new survey finds that people who own pets are happier, earn more money, and exercise more frequently than those who don’t.

In a poll of 1,000 British dog and cat owners over 55 and 1,000 people in the same age group who don’t have any pets, researchers calculated that pet owners were twice as likely to consider themselves a success. In fact, 9 in 10 owners agreed that their furry family members were good for their health and well-being. The belief makes sense: the survey showed that pet owners log nearly twice as much exercise, getting a good sweat about five times per week, versus just three time a week for the non-owners.

“The many benefits of pet ownership also include the cardio-vascular exercise of dog-walking, and even the light housework associated with feeding and clearing up after our beloved animals,” says psychologist and author Corinne Sweet in a release.

The survey, commissioned by McCarthy & Stone, a leading retirement housebuilder in the United Kingdom, might make you wonder more about the seemingly sadder lives of the non-owner group. That’s because the researchers claim pet owners surveyed were more likely to be married, have a child, hold a college degree, and work the “perfect job.”

But perhaps most shockingly, having a cat or dog is somehow linked to a higher salary. Pet-loving participants earned nearly $5,200 more per year than their counterparts.

And owners proved to be more philanthropic too, volunteering for charities more frequently than the other group.

But…

Prayers said for nine-year-old girl killed by cliff rock fall

Inside was a candle, a books of poems and a tribute which read: “Please remember in your prayers the young girl who died on Wednesday in a tragic accident.

“Remember also all her family and all affected by this incident.”

It is not the first rock fall tragedy to happen along the British coastline.

Villagers living close to where the girl – who has not been named – have said the cliffs there are notoriously unstable.

It is understood the youngster was visiting Staithes with her mother when the tragedy happened on Wednesday, just on the other side of the sea wall to the harbour, at the eastern of the village.

Owen Humphreys/PA Wire

The scene was around 100m beyond a prominent red sign, screwed to the rock face, which warns of the dangers of the cliffs.

But people who live in Staithes said visitors are often not aware of the constantly crumbling nature of the shale rock, saying youngsters often hack it with hammers looking for fossils.

North Yorkshire Police said the girl died after suffering serious head injuries at around 4.45pm on Wednesday.

Owen Humphreys/PA Wire

A spokesman said: “Sadly, despite the efforts of the emergency services, the girl died at the scene from her injuries.”

“The beach was reopen on Wednesday afternoon and some people laid flowers on the harbour wall, close to the scene.”

A single sunflower was…

‘Each Day Is Truly a Blessing,’ Says Mom of Baby Who Had Successful Heart-Lung Transplant

‘Each Day Is Truly a Blessing,’ Says Mom of Baby Who Had Successful Heart-Lung Transplant

A Kansas City mom and dad who saw their 5-month-old son survive a rare lung-and-heart transplant say they hope their story encourages other families.

“Don’t give up,” the mom, Tiffany Palmer, told The Today Show.

The story began even before the baby – named “Jack” — was born. At 20 weeks of Tiffany’s pregnancy, an ultrasound revealed devastating news: Their unborn baby had a major heart defect that would kill him if nothing was done.

“We were just devastated, crushed, hopeless,” Tiffany told Today. “Instead of planning to bring home a new baby like we were hoping, we were feeling [as if] we had to plan a funeral.”

Desperate, Tiffany and her husband, Chuck, began searching for hospitals that might be able to help. Doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital provided hope. He was born on Jan. 16, sick and needing life support just to stay alive.

Almost immediately, they had to make a decision: Wait for a transplant – which could require a long wait – or withdraw life support, Today reported.

“His brain was perfect. His other organs were perfect. There was nothing else wrong with him but his heart and lungs,” Tiffany said. “We felt like withdrawing care would be inhumane.”

She added, “We knew it would be a very long tedious road and that Jack may not even survive to transplant.”

Willow Creek’s Entire Elder Board, Pastor Heather Larson Resign Over Bill Hybels Scandal, Failings

(Photo: Willow Creek Association)

The entire elder board of Willow Creek Community Church, including executive pastor Heather Larson, have announced that they are resigning over the Bill Hybels sex abuse scandal.

“While Bill Hybels was our founder and pastor, he was human, broken, and self-admittedly sinful. We believe that his sins were beyond what he previously admitted on stage, and certainly we believe that his actions with these women were sinful. We believe he did not receive feedback as well as he gave it, and he resisted the accountability structures we all need,” declared Missy Rasmussen, one of Willow Creek’s elders, in a statement Wednesday.

“We, as a board, know Willow needs and deserves a fresh start, and the entire board will step down to create room for a new board. This board replacement process will start promptly and proceed in waves to ensure an orderly transition, with all current Elders leaving by the end of the year,” she announced.

“The first wave of Elders will leave by August 15. The members of the current board will not control the implementation of the findings of the governance review and investigations we are announcing tonight.”

As Rasmussen explained, the resignations follow new accusations against Hybels, made by Pat Baranowski, who says…

New Survey Explores Why People Don’t Attend Church

New Survey Explores Why People Don’t Attend Church

A 2014 poll found that roughly one-third of Americans seldom or never attend religious services in churches, mosques or other “houses of worship.” A new survey explores all the reasons why they stay at home.

The Aug. 1 Pew Research Center survey found that among adults who seldom or never attend services, 37 percent do so because they say they practice their faith “in other ways.”

The other reasons are varied:

  • 28 percent – “I am not a believer.”

  • 23 percent – “I haven’t found a church or other house of worship I like.”

  • 18 percent – “I don’t like the sermons.”

  • 14 percent – “I don’t feel welcome.”

  • 12 percent – “I don’t have the time.”

  • 9 percent – “I’m in poor health or find it difficult to get around.”

  • 7 percent – “There isn’t a church or other house of worship for my religion in my area.”

The 2014 survey found that 30 percent of Americans seldom or never attend religious services.

Meanwhile, among Americans who attend services at least once a month, the new poll found that 81 percent do so to become closer to God, 69 percent so their children will have a moral foundation, 68 percent to make them a “better person,” and 66 percent to give them comfort in troubled times.

The new poll was conducted among 4,729 adults in December.

Virgin Mary voted just 12th most significant women in history list

A reader poll conducted by BBC History Magazine saw Marie Curie come out on top.

The Polish-born French scientist, who became the first person to win two Nobel prizes – one for physics and one for chemistry – carried out important research into radioactivity, a term that she coined.

Her discoveries launched effective cures for cancer and helped in the development of X-rays in surgery.

Civil Rights campaigner Rosa Parks was second while leader of the suffragette movement Emmeline Pankhurst was third.

BBC History Magazine deputy editor Charlotte Hodgman said: “The poll has shone a light on some truly extraordinary women from history, many of whose achievements and talents were overlooked in their own lifetimes.

“It is fitting that, in a year that has seen the 100th anniversary of the parliamentary Act that gave the vote to many British women, suffrage campaigners Emmeline Pankhurst and Josephine Butler have been voted into the top 20.

“Whilst it is unsurprising to see queens such as Victoria and Eleanor of Aquitaine place high, it is refreshing to see some more unfamiliar names make the top 20, such as 19th-century philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts. I’m sure the full list will provoke conversation and debate.”

Police kept in dark about abuse at two top catholic schools, inquiry finds

Monks at Ampleforth in North Yorkshire (pictured above) and Downside in Somerset hid allegations of “appalling sexual abuse” against pupils as young as seven to protect the church’s reputation.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) made the claims in a withering report on the English Benedictine Congregation, which has 10 monasteries in England and Wales.

Ampleforth and Downside are two schools linked to the monasteries, run at times by “secretive, evasive and suspicious” church officials who avoided reporting misconduct to police and social services.

Allegations stretching back to the 1960s encompassed “a wide spectrum of physical abuse, much of which had sadistic and sexual overtones”, according to the report.

Ten individuals linked to the schools, mainly monks, have been cautioned or convicted over sexual activity or pornography offences involving a “large number of children”.

“The true scale of the abuse however is likely to be considerably higher,” the investigation, led by Professor Alexis Jay (pictured below), found.

The report followed several weeks of evidence hearings at the inquiry last year, which included personal accounts from victims.

Victims were as young as 11 at Downside and seven at Ampleforth.

One alleged offender at Ampleforth abused at least 11 children aged between eight and 12 over a “sustained period of time”, but died before police could investigate.

“Many perpetrators…

Willow Creek Elders and Lead Pastor Resign in Wake of Hybels Revelations

Willow Creek Elders and Lead Pastor Resign in Wake of Hybels Revelations

CHICAGO (RNS) — The lead pastor and entire elder board of Willow Creek Community Church have announced they will resign to give the church a “fresh start” following new allegations of sexual harassment against founder and former pastor Bill Hybels.

That announcement came late Wednesday (Aug. 8) at a “family meeting” of the congregation at the church’s main campus in South Barrington, Ill., the night before the start of Willow Creek Association’s popular annual Global Leadership Summit at the church.

“This is really important. Trust has been broken by leadership, and it doesn’t return quickly,” Willow Creek lead pastor Heather Larson said. “There is urgency to move us in a better direction.”

The news follows the resignation over the weekend of lead teaching pastor Steve Carter, who cited differences with the church over how it handled allegations against Hybels and a “horrifying” report in the Sunday New York Times that detailed new allegations by Hybels’ former executive assistant.

Pat Baranowski, who worked for Willow Creek in the 1980s, alleged in that report that Hybels had fondled her breasts, rubbed against her and once engaged her in oral sex.

A March investigation by the Chicago Tribune and further reporting by Christianity Today documented more women’s claims that Hybels had invited them to hotel rooms, commented on their…
