Willow Creek lead pastor, elders resign

I will always remember the first time I heard Bill Hybels speak in person. I had been invited to be one of the teachers at an evangelism conference hosted by Willow Creek Community Church. Hybels addressed the opening session, calling us to use our influence to reach the unreached with urgency and creativity.

His passion for the lost was palpable. His leadership charisma was unmistakable. It was not surprising that he was leading not just one of America’s largest churches but one of our generation’s most influential ministries.

In the last year, so much of his story has changed. And now the crisis at the church he founded has reached a new level.

Last night, Lead Pastor Heather Larson resigned her position. The entire elder board of the church resigned as well. Christianity Today is calling their resignations “a seismic shock for one of the nation’s most influential churches.”

Elder Missy Rasmussen spoke for the board, stating: “We are sorry that we allowed Bill to operate without the kind of accountability that he should have had.” She added: “We exhort Bill to acknowledge his sin and publicly apologize.” As a consequence of their handling of this crisis, she announced: “Willow needs and deserves a fresh start, and the entire board will step down to create room for a new board.”

Steve Gillen, lead pastor of Willow Creek’s North Shore campus, will serve as interim pastor. The church still intends to move forward with an independent investigation into the allegations against Hybels.

Why is the story of a single church’s struggles so significant? Because that church is one of the most significant congregations in American history.

A model for churches around the world

Bill Hybels was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of a wholesale produce operator. He came to personal faith in Christ as a teenager.

In 1971, Hybels was a youth pastor in Chicago when he started a worship service called “Son City.” The…

‘We believe his sins were beyond what he previously admitted’, Willow Creek elders resign over Bill Hybels allegations

In a statement on the church website the elders apologised to all the women who’ve made claims against Hybels.

They said his sins were beyond what he previously admitted and asked for forgiveness over the way they handled the situation.

“To all of the women who have come forward, the church should always follow in Jesus’ footsteps to help the wounded find healing, and we are sorry we added to your pain,” they said. “That was not our intention, and we regret that it has taken us this long to acknowledge that.

“While we will probably never know with certainty everything that’s true about each of your stories, we have no reason not to believe you.

“We are sorry that our initial statements were so insensitive, defensive, and reflexively protective of Bill. We exhort Bill to acknowledge his sin and publicly apologize.

Lead Pastor Heather Larson has also resigned suggesting trust has been broken by the church’s leadership and urgent action was required.

Steve Gillen – who has previously worked in numerous roles within Willow Creek – will now take up the role of lead pastor.

Bill Hybels has been accused of numerous counts of sexual misconduct, with the latest claim being made in the New York Times that he indecently touched a former assistant.

While Hybels stood down from church ministry when the allegations first surfaced, he denied wrongdoing but apologised for being “unwise” and potentially misleading…

Report on abuse at leading Catholic schools to be published

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) has investigated whether Ampleforth in North Yorkshire and Downside in Somerset failed to protect pupils from predators.

Lawyers representing former students allege the schools turned a blind eye to offending over many years.

Following several weeks of evidence hearings last year, the probe, led by Professor Alexis Jay, will publish its findings at midday on Thursday.

The inquiry carried out a case study on the English Benedictine Congregation as part of a wider investigation into the Catholic Church.

Counsel to the inquiry Riel Karmy-Jones said in her opening last November that there were many instances when church officials chose to keep abuse quiet.

A “wide spectrum of behaviour”, ranging from rape to voyeuristic beatings, was inflicted on school pupils over many years, she said.

Reasons for cover-ups included families being pressured not to report assaults, offenders getting shifted to different establishments but not punished and complaints simply being ignored, she added.

Predators from the two schools who were convicted include David Lowe, who taught at Ampleforth and was jailed for 10 years in 2015 for 15 indecent assaults on boys aged under 14.

During the same hearing, Richard Scorer, representing 27 core participants to the inquiry, said some schools concealed abuse out of fear for their…

defend burka like you defend the cross

Ruth Davidson – who’s the leader of the Scottish Conservatives – has been speaking out following the comments by Boris Johnson.

Speaking to the Telegraph, she said: “If you use the analogy of Christianity, would you ever write in the Telegraph that you should have a debate about banning Christians from wearing crucifixes?

“It’s the same argument but it’s in a different faith so why are the parameters different for one faith and not the other?”

She was speaking after the former foreign secretary compared the burka to a letter box and women who wear it to bank robbers.

He’s since been asked to apologise by Prime Minister Theresa May.

PA

With no apology forthcoming, founder and president of the Conservative Muslim Forum Lord Sheikh told the BBC the party should take “severe action” against Mr Johnson.

Prominent backbench eurosceptic Jacob Rees-Mogg said there was no need for Mr Johnson to apologise.

Asked about Mrs May’s handling of the controversy, Mr Rees-Mogg told LBC radio: “She’s clearly wrong to have asked him to have apologised. It’s not the job of the Prime Minister to tell backbenchers what to do.

“We are not bound by collective responsibility or that type of discipline and it is the wrong approach to party discipline.”

An imam who has previously criticised the burka said Mr Johnson should not “apologise for telling…

Why Some Dying Churches Don’t Know They Are Dying

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

Dying churches often don’t realize their problem until it’s too late. Today we look at the reasons why.

Today’s Listener Question:

FROM BRANDON

Why do dying churches not realize they are dying?

Episode Highlights:

  • Dying churches die because they refuse to confront reality.
  • Church members in dying churches often don’t realize the church is dying because their relational patterns have not been upset yet.
  • Church assessments give you perceptions of the members so that leaders can have a better view of the church.
  • “We aren’t as bad as that church” is not really a reason to be proud of your church.

The six reasons we discuss are:

  1. They are in denial
  2. They still have most of their friends in the church
  3. They have not done a church assessment
  4. They don’t see the decline day by day
  5. They think smaller is better
  6. They compare themselves to a church in worse condition

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

David Ibiyeomie: Mental Empowerment

Topic: Mental Empowerment

When it comes to earthly success, it is from the mind you succeed. This is because it is from the mind that earth-shaking ideas are born. The Holy Spirit is the source of empowerment

Acts 1:8a – But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:

As soon as the Holy Spirit comes on you, you become invested with authority to do exploits. The Spirit of God has empowered every child of God to operate in the class of Jesus.

It is your mental empowerment that determines your earthly placement. What you will be on earth is a function of your mind. When your mind is loaded, you cannot be earthly useless.

Dan.6:3 – Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

Daniel had an excellent spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of excellence. The mind is the capital of your life – everything you are looking for is in the mind. Therefore success or failure is determined by how you use your mind. That is why there are so many prayer giants who are failures in life because their spirit is revived but their mind is left fallow. They pray to cast out demons but they are earthly useless. If you are earthly useless, you will not be able to convert souls. Success is a commander of attraction while failure is an orphan.

Having being empowered at new birth by the Holy Ghost, you have to consciously develop your mind for exploits. Everything that will make you a success is already in you; God has given it to you but you have to stir it up.

You are where you are now because of how you have utilized your mind. Success has nothing to do with demons because the Lord has prepared a table before you IN THE PRESENCE of your enemies (Psalm 23:5). When the prodigal son tasked his mind, no demon was able stop him.

To consciously generate mental exploits and be productive in your mind, you must first and foremost know how to relate with the Holy Spirit. He is already in you as a child of God but you must build a good relationship with Him.

John 16:13 – Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Secondly, if you want to do exploits in life, you must be a reader.

Dan.9:2 – In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

Your mental capacity cannot increase except you read.

2Tim. 2:15 – Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Every time you read the bible, you are rubbing your mind with the mind of God because God’s thoughts are in His words. So also, every time you are reading a book, you are rubbing your mind with the mind of the author. If you are not a reader, you cannot be a leader.

Spend time review books and magazines in the field you want to delve into. The capacity of your mind will only grow based on what you are feeding her with. You must read because there is no short-cut to success.

I see you succeed as you implement these in Jesus name – Amen

God bless you

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 9 August 2018

TOPIC: The Snare of Spiritual Power (Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Thursday, 9 August 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 2:19-24

MEMORY VERSE: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” – James 1:19-20

The MESSAGE:

Spiritual power is given unto us to exercise authority over devils and bless the people of God. Whichever way we exercise this spiritual power, it must be to bring glory to God, profit to the body of Christ and devastating damage to the kingdom of darkness. This is the correct use of spiritual power. In our text today, Elisha correctly applied spiritual power by healing the waters of Jericho. However, soon after that wonderful miracle, a great challenge confronted him as the devil chose to engage him in destroying young children created in the image of God. He failed to resist the devil but fell into the snare of spiritual power. The same tongue with which he removed the curse upon Jericho, he engaged in cursing little children who insulted him. Later on in his ministry, his servant, Gehazi, incurred the wrath of Elisha and in return got everlasting curse of leprosy upon himself and his descendants. Sequel to the prophecy that brought about the deliverance of Samaria from the siege of Syria, the one who doubted the prophecy of Elisha was plagued with the curse of death. Joash the king of Israel had his own share of the wrath of Elisha when he failed to meet the unexpressed expectation of Elisha in the prophetic shooting of arrows to symbolise victory over Syria.

What shall we say to these things? The anointed man of God may be caught up in the snare of spiritual power to the point that the anointing becomes destructive rather than constructive. He gets to a point where he begins to use the anointing to threaten the members and the pastors. He is swift to curse in display of anger against the wrongdoings of members. Whenever this happens, the snare of power is trapping him. This should not happen at all. Such a man has an untamed tongue and is actively working for the devil rather than God. James 3:8-13 cautions us against the misuse of the anointing. We should not engage the same mouth we use to bless God in cursing men which are created in the image of God. A fountain cannot bring forth sweet and bitter water at the same time neither can it turn out both salt and fresh water. Jesus rebuked James and John in Luke 9:54-56 when they expressed their intention to call down fire to destroy the people of a Samaritan village who refused Jesus’ passage to Jerusalem through their land. The essence of spiritual power is not to destroy men’s lives but to save them. Take heed that you do not fall into the snare of spiritual power and if you are already trapped, the Lord shall deliver you, in Jesus’ name.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
ANOINTING BREAKS THE YOKE.

PROPHETIC WORD:
Your anointing will not be caught in the snare of destructive spiritual power.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. You the snare of spiritual power, I set you ablaze by fire, in the name of Jesus.
2. Uncontrollable anger in my life, I cast you out by fire, in the name of Jesus.
3. Holy Ghost fire, purge my spirit of any form of defilement, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. Spiritual pride, I am not your candidate, loose your hold upon my life, in the name of Jesus.
5. O Lord, make me a vessel of honour, fit for the Master’s use, in the name of Jesus.
6. The anointing of God upon my life shall not be hijacked by the devil, in the name of Jesus.
7. I refuse to surrender my ministry and calling to the destroyers, in the name of Jesus.

TREM 9 August 2018 Daily Devotional

Topic: Your Story Will End In Glory [TREM 9 August 2018 Daily Devotional]

“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ”. 2 Corinthians 4:6

From our text, you will notice that God didn’t command light to come out of light. Rather, He commanded light to come out of darkness. It means that in every darkness there is light. The fact that it looks dark and obscure does not mean that is the end of the story. That is where God comes in. That is where He flexes His muscle.

He dwells in the light which no one can approach. He is God! He is light Himself and the scripture says He commands light to come out of darkness. So, whatever the enemy has packaged, God is saying that is not the end. The final word belongs to God. Whatever that has held you down, light is coming out of it. No matter the complexity of your situation, I declare that solution is coming out of it. He commanded light to come out of darkness because He is God all by Himself. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is the Beginning and the End. He is the First and the Last.

According to the book of Hebrews 5:7 & 9, When Jesus had…….”offered up prayer and supplications with strong crying and tears unto Him that was able to save Him from death, and was heard in that he feared. And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation….” Something new came out of Him. The new creation was born because of that. That is why the scripture says in I Corinthians 2:8 that if the princes of this world had known they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. So, I can boldly tell you right now that your situation will not end in disappointment. It will not end in disgrace. Don’t even make plans for failure because it will never end in failure. As long as Jesus Christ rose from the dead, triumphant over death, hell and grave; I can tell you without fear that your story will end in glory.

Teens Open Heaven 9 August 2018 – Weaknesses and Strengths

Topic: Weaknesses and Strengths [Teens Open Heaven 9, August 2018]

Memorise: But by the grace of God I am what I am: and His grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 1 Corinthians 15:10

Read: 1 Corinthians 15:9-11 (KJV)

Bible In One Year: Psalm 85-87, Romans 9

MESSAGE:

Every human being have their strengths and weaknesses. Your strengths or area of endowment should remind you that you are a beneficiary of divine grace and as a result, you should not think that you are better, wiser or stronger than your neighbor who does not have the same gifts. When you ascribe glory to God for your strengths, He will sustain them. In the same way, your weaknesses should point you back to God. Your frailties, shortcomings and weaknesses remind you of the limitations of the flesh which should lead you to God, the only One who is unlimited.

As a Christian teenager, you must recognize your strengths. God has specially endowed you in certain areas for a purpose. In order to optimize your strengths, there is a need to find out their purpose and set out to achieve them. Learn more about your strengths and seek to improve them constantly. On the other hand, in areas of you weakness, the challenge is to prayerfully turn them into strengths. With God’s help, this is possible. Your weaknesses can become your virtues.

Action Point: Ask God to turn your weaknesses into strengths.

Hymn 6:

1. Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home:
2. Under the shadow of your throne
Your saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is your arm alone,
And our defense is sure

3. Before the hills in order stood
Or earth received its frame,
From everlasting you are God,
To endless years the same.

4. A thousand ages in your sight
Are like an evening gone
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

5. Time, like an ever_rolling stream,
Soon bears us all away;
We fly forgotten, as a dream
Does at the opening day.

6. Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Still be our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home!

Kenneth & Gloria Copeland 9 August 2018 Daily Devotional – Possess God’s Rest

Topic: Possess God’s Rest [Kenneth & Gloria Copeland 9th August 2018 Daily Devotional]

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God…. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. – Hebrews 4:9,11

God’s rest. Considering the hectic, busy lives you and I live that sounds like a pretty good thing to have, doesn’t it? But exactly what is that rest? And how do we enter it?

The third and fourth chapters of Hebrews compare God’s rest with the children of Israel taking possession of the Promised Land. That land was to be a place where their every need would be met, a place of freedom from their warring enemies, a place no one would ever drive them from again. All they had to do was go in and possess it. But something kept them from it: unbelief and disobedience.

As believers, we too, have the opportunity to enter a promised land of abundance and peace. A land where we can rest from our struggles and enjoy the victory of God. To enter it we must do what the children of Israel failed to do. We must simply trust God and obey His voice.

How do you come to that place of trust and obedience? By getting to know your Father. By spending time fellowshiping with Him in prayer and in the Word. That is the labor that will bring you into His rest!

I’ll never forget when I first discovered that. I had been learning the principles of faith, striving hard to do them. It seemed back then that keeping doubt and unbelief out of my heart was difficult. Then, one day, I began to labor to know the Father instead of just knowing about Him.

When I did that, He began to reveal Himself to me. He gave me glimpses of His heart, His nature and His love. As He revealed to me how much He wanted to do for His children, it changed my striving into peace, my doubt into trust, my fear into bold obedience. It enabled me to enter His rest.

Get to know your Father. Work at it. Make it your “labor.” He has a promised land of rest that is waiting for you!
