Where to Go, Right Now: Duluth

(PHOTO: DENNIS LENNOX)Duluth, Minnesota

You might not think of Duluth as a destination, but it’s one place you should add to your list if only because hipster gentrification hasn’t yet reached this Rust Belt city in northern Minnesota.

Long known for its connection to the Great Lakes maritime industry — namely the shipping of iron ore — the Zenith City, as Duluth is known, feels bigger than its relatively modest population of 86,265.

This is evident in the array of architecture, which varies from the magnificent Richardsonian Romanesque-style former high school to a neoclassical city hall. Another notable example is a French château-inspired former train station, the Duluth Depot. There are also Gothic Revival churches, as one would expect to find.

The vast majority of these buildings were erected between the late 19th century and the interwar period, though downtown has several later additions, including an elevated highway and parking garages, that detract from its fine cityscape.

Besides so many notable buildings what stood out most were the number of homeless and street corner panhandlers throughout central downtown. After all, Duluth’s weather for the majority of the year is hardly ideal for the homeless.

The five-minute drive from downtown to the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary takes you on an architectural history lesson as you pass through neighborhoods and see everything from brownstone and brick to single-family dwellings in the late Victorian, Queen Anne and…

Creation Fest founder says he should to be ‘cast into the sea’ during sex assault hearing

Harry Thomas, who helped start Creation Fest, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for sexually abusing young children.

During his sentencing in late July he referenced Luke 17:2, agreeing that his punishment was just.

He said: “I agree with the scriptures. It would be better for a millstone to be hung around my neck and be cast into the sea. That’s what I deserve.”

According to Associated Press, as part of a plea agreement earlier this year, the 75 year old acknowledged sexually assaulting a nine-year-old in 2005, having sexual contact with three girls ages seven to nine in 2000 and 2010 and exposing himself to a girl between 2008 and 2010.

He said he was “very sorry for the pain” he’s caused.

Thomas was senior pastor of Come Alive New Testament Church in Medford, New Jersey.

The church said in a statement in December 2017, soon after Thomas’ arrest, that he was “indefinitely suspended… from all leadership positions with the church, festival, and all associated ministries”.

Large Edinburgh church splits from Anglican body over gay marriage dispute

According to the Sunday Telegraph, St Thomas parish split from the SEC because of the Anglican body’s decision to endorse same-sex marriage.

The Rev David McCarthy, Rector at St Thomas’ told the newspaper the decision was extremely difficult.

“We have not done it easily. We have had many tears and many sleepless nights. It is a tragic necessity,” he said.

“But it is the Episcopal Church who are leaving us. They are leaving orthodoxy.”

In June 2017, the SEC voted to amend canon law and allow same-sex couples to be married in church.

The move made it the first branch of the Anglican faith in the UK to allow same-sex marriage.

SEC members voted to remove the doctrinal clause which stated that marriage is a ”union of one man and one woman”, replacing it with a clause which asserts that clergy who do not wish to preside over same-sex weddings will not be compelled to do so ”against their conscience”.

The Anglican Communion, the international association of the world’s third largest Christian movement, punished the SEC for its decision last year.

Now SEC leaders are not be allowed to represent the Anglican Communion and cannot take part in any votes the Communion holds regarding doctrine or new rules.

In response to the discipline, Most Rev Mark Strange Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, said it was a decision that was made with much prayer, theological…

Rev Canon Vanda Perrett, Rector of St Buryan said: “This is part one of a larger scheme of refurbishing and repairs to our unique building to make it safe and secure for the future, but also to make it fit for purpose today.

“In addition to the tower works, we have recently renewed the heating system and sound system and are beginning the process of putting a toilet and kitchen into the building.”

Footballer gives back to hometown church

According to the BBC’s World Football podcast, Matic has financed repairs for an Orthodox church in the small village of Vrelo.

Last year he paid for a new roof, spire and fence for the historic church. He also donated money for it to be repainted, and for new clocks to be installed.

According to locals the new clocks were special because they “run on time which hasn’t happened in for a good 100 years”.

The footballer also donated a fountain to the church, which he was married in and baptised his children in.

The priest of the church said Matic is a humble person and he’s sure the footballer would rather not have had his name on a small brass plaque marked on the fountain.

A local man said: “He’s a world star but he’s the same guy he was ten or 15 years ago. He’s modest, always ready to talk to you, to help you.”

Matic’s philanthropy also includes paying off debts that villagers owed at a local grocery store and building a football stadium in the area.

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 5 August 2018 Devotional — Tear Down Your Walls with Faith

Topic: Tear Down Your Walls with Faith [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Sunday August 5, 2018]

For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord, because they have called you an outcast: ‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’ — Jeremiah 30:17

To avoid pain, some of us build walls around ourselves so we will not get hurt, but that is pointless. God has shown me that it is impossible to live in this world if we are not willing to get hurt. People are not perfect; therefore, they hurt and disappoint us, just as we hurt and disappoint others.

I have a wonderful husband, but occasionally he has hurt me. Because I came from such a painful background, the moment that kind of thing happened, I used to put up walls to protect myself. After all, I reasoned, no one can hurt me if I don’t let anyone get close to me. However, I learned that if I wall others out, I also wall myself in. The Lord has shown me that He wants to be my protector, but He cannot do that if I am busy trying to protect myself.

He has not promised that I will never get hurt, but He has promised to heal me if I come to Him rather than try to take care of everything myself. If you build walls around yourself out of fear, then you must tear them down out of faith.

Go to Jesus with each old wound and receive His healing grace. When someone hurts you, take that new wound to Jesus. Do not let it fester. Take it to the Lord and be willing to handle it His way and not your own. Receive this scripture as a personal promise from the Lord to you:

“For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord, because they have called you an outcast: ‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’” (Jeremiah 30:17).

With the help of the Lord, you can survive hurt and disappointment and find your completion “in Him.”

Prayer Starter: Father, You have created me to have good relationships. Help me to step out in freedom. Please heal me of any wounds that are holding me back. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Topic: The Spoken Word is the Solution [TREM 5 August 2018 Daily Devotional]

“By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.” Psalm 33:6 (KJV)

As a child of God, whenever you are faced with any situation, don’t start looking at the problem, start looking at the solution. That is how it works in the kingdom. God doesn’t start solving problems from the problem. You can never solve your problem from the problem; start from the solution. What is the solution? Whatever the word of God says; that’s the solution. Stand in the word and the problem will submit to “thus says the Lord”.

Beloved, if you learn to accept and stand on what God has said, it will change what is happening around you because the greatest power of God is His word. For instance, it was what God said in Genesis chapter 1 that brought the entire universe into existence. His word has no margin of failure. What the word accomplished in the beginning can still be accomplished in your life today. You need to function with the understanding that it is the word of God that will prevail and manifest in your life

One word from the Lord can make all the difference in your life. Struggles come to an end when you receive the proceeding word. You know what others don’t know and that makes you stand out. You can only display this unusual wisdom that will put you ahead of the pack if you are properly grounded in the word of God. So be a stickler for the word. You need to continually feed your spirit man with the word and the word will produce for you. It is as you give the word the place of priority in your life that fresh strategies, insights, ideas, and concepts will become commonplace in your life. I declare that you will shock your detractors. All those coming to still see you on the floor will get to where they left you only to discover that you have moved on.

Kenneth & Gloria Copeland 5 August 2018 Daily Devotional – Watch and Pray

Topic: Watch and Pray [Kenneth & Gloria Copeland 5th August 2018 Daily Devotional]

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. – Matthew 26:41

Have you ever been frustrated with the weaknesses of your flesh? Have you ever resolved never more to yield to a particular sin, yet when the temptation came, you fell right back into it?

It’s happened to all of us—even the disciple Peter. He swore he would never deny Jesus…but he did it anyway, time and time and time again.

There is, however, something we can do to keep from falling prey to temptations like that. We can “watch and pray.” That’s what Jesus told Peter and the other disciples to do in the Garden of Gethsemane. He knew they were about to be tempted, and He knew that the weakness of their flesh would overcome them if they didn’t strengthen their spirits through prayer.

That’s true for you and me too. That’s why in Jude 20-21, God tells us much the same thing that Jesus told the disciples that night. He says, “But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith…praying in the Holy Spirit; guard and keep yourselves in the love of God…” (The Amplified Bible).

God knows even better than we do that our flesh has been trained to flow with the world’s stream. He knows that even though our born-again spirits are reaching for God, our untrained flesh will always have a tendency to fall into sin.

So, He’s given us the ability to pray in other tongues, to strengthen our spirits and build ourselves up until our spirits take ascendancy over our flesh. As we pray in the spirit, Romans 8:26 tells us, the “[Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf…” (The Amplified Bible).

Is it any wonder the Apostle Paul said, “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all” (1 Corinthians 14:18)! It is one of the most powerful tools God has given us.

So don’t neglect to use it. Follow the instruction in Ephesians 6:18 and pray “always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance.”

Don’t make the mistake that Peter made. When temptation comes to your door, don’t let it catch you sleeping. Be prepared. Make sure your spirit is strong enough to rise above it.

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 5 August 2018

TOPIC: Repent and Turn to God (Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Sunday, 5 August 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Matthew 27:3-6

MEMORY VERSE: “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” – Acts 3:19

The MESSAGE:

2 Chronicles 7:14 is a key Scripture that gives us express offer of salvation, and healing, sequel to repentance from sin. God said: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” This does not grant express permission to commit sin and subsequently turn to God in repentance in order to obtain forgiveness. God always looks at the intention of our heart. God is merciful, but the consequence of sin cannot be escaped.

Judas Iscariot had great opportunity to repent of his wicked intention before any damage was done. Despite the warnings of the Lord, he still went ahead to carry out his evil agenda. His senses were awakened after betraying the Lord. Though he regretted his action with a remorseful heart, he never repented and turned to God. No wonder he committed suicide immediately after he realised the gravity of what he did. He lost his apostleship, lost the financial gains of his wickedness, lost his life and lost eternal life. Even though he was with the Lord and daily dined with the Lord, this did not stop the devil from harvesting his soul. What a pity? Samson had exceptional deliverance anointing, but his love for sinful sexual satisfaction demoted him. He became a captive and object of ridicule in the camp of the enemies. He moved from being an oppressor to a laughing stock. He lost his eyes to the lust of the eyes and eventually lost his entire life to the lust of the flesh. Even though he cried to God for vengeance, he did not obtain deliverance from captivity and torture. The answer to his prayer resulted in massive death of his captors, but his own life was also not spared. He perished in his sins.

Prior to selling his birthright, Esau had conducted himself in a manner that displeased his parents when he married Judith, the daughter of Beeri, the Hittite, and Bashemath, the daughter of Elon, the Hittite in Genesis 26:34-35. He later compounded his problems by selling his birthright, which made him to lose the blessings of the firstborn. What he lost carelessly to the lust of the flesh, his great and exceeding bitter cry could not restore to him. A further attempt to appease his parents over his marriage to the daughters of Canaan was not only in the wrong direction, but rather late and futile. He lost miserably forever to the extent that even though he was the first born of Isaac, his name did not qualify for mention when addressing God as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Repentance is good, but prevention is certainly better than cure. To avoid sin altogether is better than planning to repent after committing a sin. Run from every appearance of sin and stay safe. May the Lord strengthen you, in Jesus’ name.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
LET NO SIN DEMOTE YOU FROM THE PLACE OF YOUR ANOINTING.

PROPHETIC WORD:
Your name will be qualified to be mentioned before the throne of grace.

PRAYER POINTS:
MORNING
1. You snare of sin, I set you ablaze by fire, in the name of Jesus.
2. Spirit of error assigned to destroy me, I cast you out of my life by fire, in the name of Jesus.
3. Lust of the flesh, I flush you out of my life by the power in the blood of Jesus, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. Holy Spirit, do not be silent anytime I am falling away, in the name of Jesus.
5. My portion shall not be given to another, in the name of Jesus.
6. My name shall not disappear from the Book of Life, in the name of Jesus.
7. O God my Father, help me to remain in Your will always, in the name of Jesus.
