CDC Director, President Trump Push for Schools to Reopen in the Fall

President Donald Trump said this week he wants students to head back to the classroom this fall.

His announcement comes as the nation grapples with the coronavirus pandemic and as many states in the country show increases in cases.

Still, according to CBN News, Trump said this week that he is hopeful students will be able to physically attend school in a few weeks.

“We want our schools open. We want to get them open quickly, beautifully in the fall,” Trump said. “As you know this is a disease, a horrible disease but young people do extraordinarily well.”

Many school districts across the country have already announced tentative plans for the fall, allowing either in-person or virtual learning.

Also, in June, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its guidance for schools, including recommendations such as staggering schedules, spreading out desks, having meals in classrooms instead of the cafeteria, adding physical barriers between bathroom sinks and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.

The CDC has also said children tend to have milder symptoms of COVID-19, but they can transmit the virus to others.

“It’s clear that the greater risk to our society is to have these schools close,” Dr. Robert Redfield, head of the CDC, said. “The CDC encourages all schools to do what they need to reopen, and to have plans that anticipate that COVID-19 cases will in fact occur.”

But it’s…

One fish pulls two men into the ocean: The perils and privilege of being ‘fishers of men’

Adobe Stock

A fellow named Mike was celebrating his thirtieth birthday. Eric, a soldier who fought in Afghanistan, and his girlfriend Jenny, a registered nurse, planned a surprise fishing trip for him.

They were fishing off the coast of Cape Coral, Florida, when Mike hooked a massive grouper. After about ten seconds of fighting the giant fish, he was dragged overboard. The group pulled him out of the water, but his fishing rod was lost.

About twenty minutes later, Jenny spotted the rod on the bottom in the crystal-clear water. They hooked it with the ship’s anchor and pulled it into the boat. Surprisingly, the grouper was still attached to the line.

This time, Eric was holding the rod when the fish made a dash for the bottom again, launching Eric overboard with the rod and reel. The ship’s captain said it was the first time he saw two men get pulled into the water by the same fish.

We think of fishing as a casual, relaxing hobby, but as Mike and Eric can testify, it can be dangerous.

No greater privilege

When Jesus said to his first disciples, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19), he was similarly calling them to lives of sacrifice and challenge. These men were professional fishermen, so they knew something about the dangers and difficulties that awaited them.

The fish are just part of the problem. There are the storms that break suddenly on the Sea of Galilee and threaten to swamp boats and their sailors (cf. Matthew 14:24).

And there is the fact that fishermen must fish where and when the fish are more likely to be caught. This is why, on one occasion, Peter said, “We toiled all night” (Luke 5:5). Fish in the Sea of Galilee are more active at night, and fish caught at night can be sold fresh in the morning.

All that to say, fishing for men is a challenging and often dangerous calling. But there is no greater privilege than being used by God to change the eternal trajectory of eternal…

Supreme Court Strikes Blow to Obamacare’s Abortion/Contraceptive Mandate

Supreme Court Strikes Blow to Obamacare’s Abortion/Contraceptive Mandate

In a key win for religious employers, the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a Trump administration rule that exempts faith-based organizations from the Obama-era abortion/contraceptive mandate.

The controversy dates back to the Obama administration and President Obama’s chief legislative achievement, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

The text of the law required the coverage of “preventive care,” which Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) interpreted as mandating coverage of any Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptive and sterilization procedure – including those such as Plan B (which can work after fertilization) and “ella” (which can work after implantation). Pro-life groups consider both drugs abortifacients.

In 2018, the Trump administration’s HHS finalized a new rule exempting employers with religious and moral objections from the abortion/contraceptive mandate. The new rules did not apply to publicly traded companies.

A coalition of states, including Pennsylvania, filed suit against the Trump administration seeking to overturn the rule.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the Trump rule and concluded the administration had the authority to issue it. Although the vote was 7-2 in the judgment, only five justices joined the majority opinion. The decision was authored by Justice Clarence Thomas and…

President Trump Issues Official Notice of Withdrawal from the World Health Organization

President Trump Issues Official Notice of Withdrawal from the World Health Organization

President Trump issued a notice to the United Nations this week asserting that the U.S. will be withdrawing from the World Health Organization over the group’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and its close ties with China.

According to Fox News, on Tuesday, a spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres confirmed that the WHO had received the notification of withdrawal from the President.

Members of Congress were also informed by the White House on Tuesday and told that the official removal will take effect July 2021.

“Congress received notification that POTUS officially withdrew the U.S. from the WHO in the midst of a pandemic,” Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), wrote on Twitter Tuesday.

“To call Trump’s response to COVID chaotic & incoherent doesn’t do it justice. This won’t protect American lives or interests—it leaves Americans sick & America alone,” he contended.

Senate Health Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R- TN) also criticized Trump’s impending departure from the WHO asserting that the organization…

Supreme Court Hands Major Victory to Christian Schools in Employment Case

Supreme Court Hands Major Victory to Christian Schools in Employment Case

The U.S. Supreme Court handed private religious schools a major victory Wednesday, broadening the so-called ministerial exception and ruling they can hire and fire employees without being governed by anti-discrimination laws.

At issue were teachers at two separate Catholic schools who sued after their contracts were not renewed for reasons the schools said were related to performance. One teacher, though, alleged age discrimination, and the other alleged she was released because she asked for time off for a medical procedure. Both sued.

The ministerial exception is a legal doctrine that allows religious institutions to hire and fire employees without being governed by anti-discrimination laws. The U.S. Ninth Court of Appeals sided with the teachers, ruling they were covered by anti-discrimination because they weren’t ministers and had no ministerial background.

But the Supreme Court, in a 7-2 decision, said the schools were not bound by non-discrimination laws. Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion.

The ruling could impact future cases related to sexual orientation and gender identity, allowing Christian schools to dismiss – for example – a teacher who comes out as LGBT.

The ministerial exception, Alito ruled, is broad. An employer doesn’t have to wear the title “minister” to be exempted from non-discrimination laws, Alito wrote.

“What matters, at bottom, is…

In the Midst of Cancer Treatment, Alex Trebek and Wife Donate Thousands to Open Homeless Shelters

In the Midst of Cancer Treatment, Alex Trebek and Wife Donate Thousands to Open Homeless Shelters

Despite cancer threatening his life, Alex Trebek and his wife Jean donated over half a million dollars recently to help open two shelters for the homeless in Los Angeles.

“I’m not one of those people who thinks that we can’t deal with the homeless near my house because that’s bad. I don’t feel that way,” the Jeopardy! host said to ABC 7 News. “I wish more people would react in a positive way to reaching out and trying to help their fellow member of the community.”

The 79-year-old game show host believes that the homeless should not be judged because of unfortunate circumstances. The Alex and Jean Trebek Community Room is part of the San Fernando Valley’s first “A Bridge Home” facility. It will temporarily hold 25 women and 60 men as they transition to permanent living situations. The Trebeks also donated to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission for a second shelter opening in 2021, as reported by CBN News.

Though COVID-19 continues to disrupt everyday life for many, the new shelter will help the homeless get back on their feet and “become folks who we know are human beings and can feel that humanity again,” according to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. The shelters are part of “A Bridge Home” program, started in 2018.

“The goal of ‘A Bridge Home’ was very simple—to put ‘A Bridge Home’ shelter in every one of LA’s 15…

COVID-19 Cases in the U.S. Rise, but Number of Fatalities Fall

COVID-19 Cases in the U.S. Rise, but Number of Fatalities Fall

The United States is currently experiencing a rise in reported cases of COVID-19 while also seeing a decrease in the number of deaths. According to COVID tracking data from The New York Times, the 7-day average for new cases is at its highest peak yet, with an average of over 50,000 new cases being reported a day over the last week. At the same time, the 7- day average for deaths is at its lowest since late March. On average, 479 people died of the coronavirus every day for the first week of July. At one point in mid-April, the United States was averaging over 2,000 deaths per day.

Experts say the declining death rate coupled with the rising number of new cases cannot be explained by one factor. According to the New York Times, medical professionals see three main reasons behind the trend: more testing, better treatment, and a younger population contracting the virus.

The United States has dramatically increased its testing capacity since mid-March, even though it still lags behind what the leading experts have called for. In March, 100,000 were being tested each day while approximately 600,000 are tested each day in July. When testing was limited, many of those tested were exhibiting symptoms where more asymptomatic people are being tested now.

Hospitalizations have dropped by half since April, according to data from the COVID Tracking Project. Fewer people are on invasive ventilators and…

What happened to the $100,000 bill? Three stories and a transforming daily choice

Adobe Stock

I once owned a two-dollar bill. Many people do not know that they are still being issued by the Federal Reserve.

This is the only currency I have possessed that is included on a list of “6 Pieces of Forgotten U.S. Currency.” I have never seen a half-cent coin since it was discontinued in 1857. The $500 bill has not been circulated since 1969 but is still considered legal tender, though it’s worth much more than $500 to collectors.

Three-cent coins existed from 1851–89. The $5,000 bill was originally created to help fund the Revolutionary War but was recalled by President Nixon to keep money launderers from using it.

Then there was the $100,000 bill, featuring an image of Woodrow Wilson, that was never issued for public use or circulated into the general economy. It was created at the height of the Great Depression for banks to use in making transactions with each other. These bills cannot be held legally by collectors, but institutions such as the Smithsonian and the Museum of American Finance are allowed to exhibit them.

A transforming daily choice

As I read the article, I thought about it in the context of my sermon last Sunday on the parables of the lost coin, the lost sheep, and the lost son (Luke 15).

Jesus told us of a woman who lost a coin, lit a lamp, and swept the house to find it (v. 8). As with all his stories, this was true to life.

The stones used to make floors in his day had deep crevasses between them into which coins and other small items could fall. For this reason, archaeologists always concentrate on floors when they excavate ancient homes in Israel, knowing that they are likely to find coins they can use to date the structure.

Jesus also told us about a shepherd who lost a sheep and went after it until he found it (v. 4). His famous third story tells us a father whose son takes his share of the inheritance and goes to a “far country” where he squanders it in “reckless living”…

Man fights off one of the world’s deadliest snakes while driving: The urgency and privilege of living a life God can bless

Eastern brown snake. Adobe Stock.

A man was driving his pickup truck on an Australian highway when he noticed a reptile in the vehicle. And not just any reptile. It was an eastern brown snake—highly venomous and responsible for the majority of snakebite deaths in the country.

It started to wrap around him, striking at the driver’s seat between his legs. He used a seatbelt and a knife to fight it off while trying to stop the car. He thought he had been bitten and feared for his life, since eastern brown snake bites are fast-acting and fatal.

After killing the snake, he hit the accelerator and headed for the closest hospital. To make things worse, a police officer saw him driving at high speed and pulled him over. The man explained his predicament, and the officer called for help. When paramedics arrived, they determined that the man had not been bitten but was suffering from shock.

“It was pretty terrifying,” he admitted. If there’s a bigger understatement in today’s news, I haven’t seen it.

Atlanta’s mayor tested positive for coronavirus

Officials from the State Fair of Texas announced yesterday that the fair has been canceled for the first time since World War II due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In other COVID-19 news, Atlanta’s mayor announced that she has tested positive for the disease. While she says she has no symptoms, she notes: “It really speaks to how contagious this virus is, and we’ve taken all the precautions you can possibly take.” Brazil’s president said yesterday that he has tested positive for the virus as well.

There are times when we must fight the snake in the truck with no help from others. The virus that is afflicting our world affects our institutions but infects us individually, no matter who we are.

We are claiming this week God’s promise: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). Yesterday, we noted the urgency of trusting and serving him…

Six Things You Inherit as a New Pastor at an Established Church

Welcome to your new church. Most everyone is excited to meet you. Few will remember your first sermon, but many will tell you it was great. If your church is going to vote on you, then the percentage of “yes” votes is likely to be high. The reason is simple. The vast majority of church members want to follow a good leader, and they want their church to thrive. But be careful. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking every day will be like the first.

You’re at an established church, which means there are a few things already in place. During the leadership honeymoon, you’ll begin to figure out exactly what you are inheriting. You will want to tweak something. Some of your church members may think you are moving too quickly. Some will put you on a pedestal. Most will go with the flow. The “new” label will drop from your title.

Considerate pastors understand what they are inheriting before people stop introducing them as the “new pastor.” Here a few examples of the things you inherit as a new pastor of an established church.

  1. You inherit people. Don’t miss this. You lead people, not processes. There will be plenty of established processes to discover, but you should know the people first. And if you don’t love the people where they are now, then you don’t deserve to lead them now or later.
  2. You inherit a culture. Some people will be new. Some will be long standing members. Others will show up your first day and stick with you. Others will leave your first day. The culture…
