Government Officials Raid Church in China, Drag Congregant Away

Government Officials Raid Church in China, Drag Congregant Away

In a video released by ChinaAid, Chinese government officials appeared to raid a church service in the Fujian province of China.

The video showed officers dragging a man away from the other church attendees while the church members tried to help the man, CBN News reports.

“In a video taken at the scene, officers and attendees of Xingguang Church shout as they engage in a physical altercation,” ChinaAid said in a statement. “As they block the entrance, officials drag a Christian to the door, with other congregants fighting along with him.”

It’s unclear why the officials apprehended the man, and ChinaAid says it is expecting more information.

This is the latest persecution and violence against Christians in the country. In April, a Protestant pastor was arrested in China and charged with “subversion.” Police raided Zhao Huaiguo’s home and arrested him.

Zhao’s wife says she thinks police detained her husband because “he had posted or forwarded something from overseas to do with the coronavirus epidemic.”

Zhao’s church, the Bethel Church in Cili, is not affiliated with the state-mandated denomination, the Three-Self Patriotic Association.

A 2020 report from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom says China is one of the worse places for religious freedom.

The USCIRF report, released on April 28, said that “the state of religious freedom in China has continued to…

Trump ‘Very Confident’ U.S. Will Have Coronavirus Vaccine by January

Trump ‘Very Confident’ U.S. Will Have Coronavirus Vaccine by January

President Trump said Sunday he believes a vaccine will be available by January, a timeline that is months ahead of what some experts have said is possible.

“We are very confident that we’re going to have a vaccine at the end of the year,” Trump said during a Fox News virtual town hall.

Trump’s comments came several days after Bloomberg reported the Trump administration had launched a project known as “Operation Warp Speed” to expedite the normally slow vaccine research and production process.

The goal, according to Bloomberg, is to have 300 million doses of a coronavirus vaccine by January. To accomplish that, the government will shoulder much of the financial risk of drug companies and pay for the research and production of multiple vaccines, knowing that several might fail.

The manufacturing of the vaccine candidates would begin before it’s known if they work. The result could be millions of unusable doses but — hopefully — at least one successful candidate.

Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told NBC’s Today Show he believes it’s possible to have hundreds of millions of doses ready by January.

“I’m obviously part of the team that’s involved in that,” Fauci said. “… I think that is doable if things fall in the right place.”

Fauci emphasized the importance of getting “a vaccine that is safe, and…

Strange questions about Cinco de Mayo: The power of the name of Jesus

A man dressed as a French soldier, left, and one dressed as a Mexican soldier, sword fight during a reenactment of The Battle of Puebla between the Zacapoaztlas and French army as part of Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the Penon de los Banos neighborhood of Mexico City, Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s victory over France in the
Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Five years later, Mexican troops drove France
from the country.

Now that we know what this day is, let’s discuss what
it is not.

It is not Mexico’s Independence Day, which falls on
September 16 and commemorates the Grito de Dolores, a priest’s ringing of a
church bell in 1810 that triggered Mexico’s War for Independence from Spain.
Nor is it the Day of the Dead, a three-day holiday in which families gather to
remember deceased friends and family members.

CNN has an article today on actual questions people asked Google about this day: “When is Cinco de Mayo?” “What is Cinco de Mayo in Spanish?” “When is Cinco de Mayo celebrated in Mexico?” “When is Cinco de Mayo celebrated in the US?” “When is Cinco de Mayo in Portland, Oregon?”

For each, the name itself is the answer, of course.

The power of the name of Jesus

Let’s consider that fact in light of this statement from an
angel of the Lord to Joseph: “Do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for
that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son,
and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins”
(Matthew 1:20–21).

Many people think “Jesus Christ” was our Savior’s
first and last name in the same way “James Denison” is mine. But
“Christ” is the English version of Christos, the Greek word
for “Messiah.” And “Jesus” is the English version of Iesous,
the Greek word for “Yeshua,” which means “the Lord saves.”

The Father named his Son “Jesus” for the reason
that “he will save his…

Tom Hanks’s virtual commencement address and Star Wars Day: Are you trusting the Force more than the Father?

Tom Hanks delivered a virtual commencement address last weekend for the graduates of Ohio’s Wright State University. He called them the “chosen ones” in part because of the pandemic that has changed our lives so dramatically.

The actor explained: “You are the chosen ones because of a fate unimagined when you began your Wright State adventures.” As a result, he predicted, “You will be enlightened in ways your degree never held in promise. You will have made it through a time of great sacrifice and great need. No one will be more fresh to the task of restarting our normalcy than you—our chosen ones.”

What Warren Buffett thinks about our future

Yesterday was Star Wars Day with its annual slogan, “May the Fourth be with you.” But today is also special for Star Wars fans, since the fifth rhymes with Sith (the ancient enemies of the Jedi Order).

The Star Wars universe has been a cultural phenomenon for more than four decades in large part because of its assurance that “the Force will be with you, always.” This “Force,” however, is not a personal God but, as Obi-Wan Kenobi explained, an impersonal “energy field created by all living things.” It is available to us as we seek to defeat the “dark side.”

In this sense, the Star Wars worldview reinforces and amplifies our belief in ourselves. A single Jedi knight can destroy a Death Star. People passionately committed to good can defeat those committed to evil.

What Tom Hanks told the graduates of Wright State University is what Americans believe about ourselves: we can persevere through pain and triumph over tragedy. Warren Buffett made the same optimistic claim during a recent company shareholders meeting: “Nothing can basically stop America. The American miracle, the American magic, has always prevailed, and it will do so again.”

This can-do spirit fueled the pioneers who risked their lives and families to come to this New World, the…

Transgender Man Who Gave Birth Can’t Be Listed as Father, Court Rules

Transgender Man Who Gave Birth Can’t Be Listed as Father, Court Rules

A biological woman who identifies as a transgender man and gave birth to a child lost an appeal Wednesday to be listed as the father on the birth certificate.

Freddy McConnell was born female and had a mastectomy as an adult but became pregnant via sperm donation. The baby was born in 2018.

McConnell wanted to be listed as the child’s father on the birth certificate but was told by the registrar that British law would not permit it.

McConnell then filed suit. A lower court ruled against McConnell last year. This week, the Court of Appeal also ruled against the transgender man.

“In our view, it is not possible simply to say that Parliament has ‘de-coupled’ the concept of ‘mother’ from gender,” the three-judge panel unanimously ruled.

The word “mother,” the court said, has special significance in British law. The justices pointed to the Children Act of 1989, which it said benefits the child by requiring a mother to be listed.

“[The Act] provides that a mother has automatic parental responsibility for a child from the moment of birth,” the justices ruled. “No-one else has that automatic parental responsibility, including the father. … The fact of giving birth to a child has that effect as a matter of operation of law. It can readily be understood why this could be important in practice.

“From the moment of birth someone must have parental responsibility…

Poll: The ‘Trump Bump’ Is Over, Especially among White Christians

Poll: The ‘Trump Bump’ Is Over, Especially among White Christians

(RNS) — President Trump’s job approval ratings among some faith groups jumped in March as the number of coronavirus infections began to spread across the country.

But that “Trump bump” has all but disappeared.

A new poll released Thursday (April 30) from PRRI shows Trump’s approval has fallen on average by 6 percentage points and is now more in keeping with 2019 levels among most demographic groups.

Among white evangelicals, Trump’s favorability ratings fell to 66% from a high of 77% in March. White Catholic approval ratings of the president dropped to 48% from 60%. Perhaps the largest drop was among white mainline Protestants. Only 44% approved of the president in April, down from 62% in March. (Among nonwhite Protestants, Trump’s favorability ratings did not change.)

Overall, 43% of Americans hold mostly or very favorable views of Trump (about the same as in February shortly after he was acquitted of impeachment charges).

In mid-March, it was 49%.

“The jump we saw in March was unusually high, particularly for white evangelicals,” said Natalie Jackson, research director at PRRI. “It was one of the highest favorability records we saw for Trump among that group. What we’re seeing in April is a return to where they had been previously.”

Jackson attributed the March bump to a “rally around the flag” effect, as more Americans saw Trump on TV daily responding to the virus as…

Muslim Fulani Herdsmen Kill 13 Christians, Kidnap 13 Others in Kaduna State, Nigeria

Muslim Fulani Herdsmen Kill 13 Christians, Kidnap 13 Others in Kaduna State, Nigeria

JOS, Nigeria, May 4, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Muslim Fulani herdsmen killed 13 Christians and kidnapped 13 others in attacks on April 23-25 in north-central Nigeria, sources said.

The attacks on five villages in the counties of Kajuru and Chikun in Kaduna state displaced more than 1,000 people from their homes. The sources said those killed were members of Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Catholic, Baptist, United Church of Christ in Nations (HEKAN) or Assemblies of God churches.

The herdsmen invaded Kikwari and Kujeni communities in Kajuru County on April 25 at about 3 p.m., said Luka Binniyat, spokesman for the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU), in a press statement.

“The armed herdsmen stormed Kikwari Village, Kajuru LGA, and shot three persons and carted away livestock and foodstuff in large quantities as residents fled for dear lives,” Binniyat said.

He identified those killed as Ado Maisamari, a 56-year-old father of eight children; Titus Amos, 27, survived by his wife and three children; and Habila Amos, 25, survived by his wife and child.

“All the villagers numbering over 1,000 are now taking refuge with relations in nearby towns under tough conditions in this grim period of coronavirus lockdown,” Binniyat said.

The herdsmen attacked Kujeni village on April 23, killing three Christians and kidnapping 12 others, he said. The armed herdsmen…

Samaritan’s Purse Leaving NYC after Caring for 315 Patients ‘In Jesus’ Name’

Samaritan’s Purse Leaving NYC after Caring for 315 Patients ‘In Jesus’ Name’

With the surge in COVID-19 cases now considered manageable, Samaritan’s Purse’s Central Park field hospital unit has stopped receiving new patients and will pack up and leave in approximately two weeks.

The Christian ministry and its partner hospital, Mount Sinai Health System, released a joint statement Saturday saying the partnership had resulted in 315 coronavirus patients receiving “high-quality medical care” within the field hospital tents.

“We are grateful for this opportunity to work together to save lives and reduce suffering,” the statement said, according to New York City Public Radio. “Now that the surge in COVID hospital admissions is reaching manageable levels, we will stop admitting new patients to the Central Park field hospital as of [Monday] May 4.”

New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson previously had said Samaritan’s Purse wasn’t welcome in the city due to the organization’s biblical views on sexuality. “Hate has no place in our beautiful city,” he tweeted last week. But Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse, said on Monday his organization treated “everybody the same.” The organization is privately funded.

Ex-convict helps neighbors in Morocco cope with pandemic lockdown: We can get up or we can give up

Saturday, April 19, 2020. Noureddine Elmihnida, left, delivers medicine to one of his neighbors during a health state of emergency and home confinement order, in El Youssoufia, Rabat, Morocco.

“Noureddine is a kind man. He has helped deliver stuff
to us without charge. When I couldn’t collect my medicine from the clinic, he
did. God bless him.” This is how a neighbor described the way Noureddine
Elmihnida, a former convict in Morocco, is responding to his country’s
coronavirus pandemic.

The thirty-seven-year-old explained: “My parents were
ashamed of me and my actions, and I needed to make things right.” He left
prison determined not to return to a life of crime and drugs, embracing
“the idea of reconciliation, first with my parents who were affected the
most, then with the community I grew up in.”

He and other ex-convicts and some volunteers began working
to make life better in El Youssoufia, a crime-ridden, densely populated
neighborhood. They cleaned, painted, and planted the area.

Then the coronavirus pandemic hit. Morocco established
strict lockdown measures in March, leaving many elderly and vulnerable people
stuck at home without food or medical supplies.

Elmihnida volunteered to do grocery shopping and pick up
medicine for them. His phone now rings constantly with calls from neighbors or
friends who know someone in need. He writes down their grocery and medical
requests. Then, armed with his permit to leave the lockdown, he does their shopping.

His services have gained the attention of more well-off
residents, who make donations to him that he then distributes to the poor.
“I swore to God not to take any money for my services,” he said.

Another convict released recently from prison has been volunteering with Elmihnida. He said, “Noureddine was a troublemaker for ten years, but he’s a changed man now. He has helped paint the neighborhood and plant it, and now he’s helping people at the most needy…
