Army Chaplain Under Fire for Recommending John Piper on the Coronavirus to Other Chaplains

Army Chaplain Under Fire for Recommending John Piper on the Coronavirus to Other Chaplains

A senior army chaplain is under fire from twenty-two chaplains under his command because he sent them an email encouraging them to read John Piper’s new book Coronavirus and Christ. They are calling for him to face military discipline, including a possible court-martial for what they say is a violation of their freedom of religion, Desiring God reports.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Mark Esper asking him to investigate the action taken by Colonel Moon H. Kim, who is the command chaplain of U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys in South Korea. Kim sent an email to thirty-five military chaplains from his Army email address with a link to a free copy of Piper’s e-book and told them, “This book has helped me refocus my sacred calling to my savior Jesus Christ to finish strong. Hopefully, this small booklet would help you and your Soldiers, their Families and others you serve.”

In the letter to Secretary Esper, the MRFF said Colonel Moon’s actions were “clearly meant as a full-fledged endorsement and validation of what the book espouses and proclaims. This, in CLEAR effect, especially to the recipients of his shocking e-mail, Chaplain (Colonel) Kim is likewise endorsing and validating the same dictates as established by the author of this book.”

The MMRF specifically took issue with the theology Piper is known to…

Organization Launches Free Virtual Communal Bible Study amid Coronavirus Lockdowns

Organization Launches Free Virtual Communal Bible Study amid Coronavirus Lockdowns

As churches continue to stay closed amid COVID-19, free resources are being offered by Tyndale Bible and the Institute for Bible Reading (IFBR) for communal Bible studies.

“One of the things that we’ve seen recently in the midst of this is that reading the Bible by yourself can be lonely. You’re there alone to wrestle with your questions. And so … we want to bring people together,” senior director of mobilization for IFBR Paul Caminiti, told The Christian Post.

In the past few years, Tyndale, a book publisher, and IFBR, an activist think tank, have collaborated to produce the Immerse Bible Reading Experience, which has been growing in popularity.

The program features a six-volume Bible aimed at providing the “best reading experience possible.” Each chapter of the Bible is displayed “according to its literary genre” and void of annotations, section headings and chapter and verse numbers. Additionally, the Scripture is formatted in a “single-column setting.”

Amid stay at home orders due to COVID-19, together the organizations decided to launched a new 10-day virtual Bible “book clubs,” called Immerse From Home. The program offers an online communal Bible study of books Luke through Acts.

“This initial engagement with Scripture would be centered around the big stories of the first century: the life of Jesus, and the birth of the early church,” Caminiti…

Pakistani Governor Asks Universities to Require All Students, Including Christians, to Study the Quran

Pakistani Governor Asks Universities to Require All Students, Including Christians, to Study the Quran

The governor of a province in Pakistan is encouraging all universities to require that a study of the Quran become part of the college syllabus.

According to The Christian Post, Punjab Gov. Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar said the Quran will help students “win favor of Allah Almighty” and become “good human beings through the right understanding of the Holy Quran.”

The governor, who is chancellor of universities, has asked a seven-member committee to bring him recommendations on how to implement a study of the Quran into the syllabus.

The group’s recommendations are due May 22.

Meanwhile, a statement from CLAAS-UK, a Christian legal advocacy organization, says forcing non-Muslim students to study the Quran will have a “negative impact.”

“It is sad that for minorities, especially Christians who are living in large numbers in Punjab, their religious and fundamental rights are totally ignored,” Nasir Saeed, director of CLAAS-UK, said. “No alternative program has been announced for non-Muslim students of Punjab universities.

“It will promote bigotry and hatred against non-Muslims in Pakistani society, something which is already on the rise,” he added.

In 2017, the National Assembly and Senate in Pakistan voted to pass a bill that would make the teaching of the Quran mandatory in all schools and colleges in the country.

The Compulsory Teaching of…

90 Percent of Churches Did Not Meet in April and Few Ready to Resume ‘Normal Activities’

90 Percent of Churches Did Not Meet in April and Few Ready to Resume ‘Normal Activities’

Nine out of 10 Protestant churches in the U.S. did not meet in-person during the month of April amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and few pastors say they will resume all normal activities right away when government restrictions are lifted, according to a new LifeWay Research poll.

The survey of pastors showed that 90 percent of Protestant churches did not meet in-person during April – a similar finding to a previous poll in which 93 percent of churches did not meet in-person the final week of March. Most state and local governments did not begin restricting in-person meetings until the middle of March.

Even on Easter Sunday, 93 percent of Protestant churches did not meet.

Churches out West are the most likely to say they never halted in-person meetings.

“By the end of March, the gravity of the pandemic had changed churches’ behavior across the nation,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research. “The need for precautions did not change throughout April and churches maintained their temporary avoidance of gathering physically.”

Few churches have plans to resume all normal activities when government restrictions and guidance are lifted. For example:

  • 16 percent of pastors say they’ll resume “all normal activities” right away.
  • 23 percent will wait a few additional weeks and then resume activities gradually.
  • 7 percent will resume meetings for…

As States Ease Lockdown Restrictions, Churches Must Decide When — and How — to Reopen

As States Ease Lockdown Restrictions, Churches Must Decide When — and How — to Reopen

(RNS) —  The Rev. Jim West was feeling terrified as the state of Tennessee — and the church he pastors there — prepared to reopen after a month under stay-at-home orders.

But he was also looking forward to it.

“I just hope everything goes okay and nobody gets sick because that would be a nightmare,” he said on Tuesday afternoon (April 28).

West’s church — Petros Baptist Church in Petros, Tennessee — planned to reopen in phases in May, starting with Wednesday night adult Bible study, which West called its “least occupied service” and resuming Sunday services, usually attended by about 120 people, on Mother’s Day, with social distancing guidelines in place.

One church member had made hundreds of masks with “religious themes” for people to use, according to the pastor.

West submitted the reopening plan to his church leaders and to health officials in Morgan County, which has had fewer than 10 reported cases of COVID-19, according to the Tennessee Department of Health.

Then everything changed.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed an executive order later on Tuesday that allows many businesses across the state to reopen but “strongly encouraged” houses of worship to continue virtual services.

West wrote Wednesday on the church website he was “gutted” to share the news the church now likely wouldn’t be reopening until June.

“I was really…

How to see tonight’s meteor shower: God ‘is there and he is not silent’

Shooting stars fall across the sky during the peak of the Eta Aquarids meteor shower as the Milky Way glows brightly. Taken in Fort Stevens State Park, Ore., during the new moon on May 7, 2016.

Halley’s Comet may be the most famous space apparition of
its kind, but it only orbits the sun once every seventy-five years. However,
twice a year, our planet passes through debris it left behind, causing bright
meteor showers to be visible in our nighttime skies.

Tonight is one of those nights. The Eta Aquarids will reach
their climax Monday night and in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday morning. But
there are three caveats.

First, they will be much more visible in the Southern
Hemisphere than in the Northern. Second, storms gathering over the central US
will spread disruptive clouds over much of the Midwest, obscuring the night
sky. Third, the last supermoon of 2020 will peak in two nights, making it
difficult to seem some of the meteors.

But these facts will not change the existence of the Eta
Aquarids, merely our perception of them. We may not be able to see them clearly,
but our finitude does not affect their reality.

The solution, we’re told, is to give ourselves an hour to spot the meteors. Look after midnight, when the shower’s radiant point will climb above the horizon. And try to focus on the darkest part of the sky, for the meteors will be most visible there.

God ‘is there and he is not silent’

These solutions have a spiritual corollary.

Francis Schaeffer once wrote a book titled, He is There
and He is Not Silent
. God is speaking and working constantly in our world.
But like meteors at night, we must position ourselves to receive what his grace
intends to communicate.

Like meteor watchers who will spend hours after midnight focused
on the darkest skies, hearing God’s voice requires time spent alone in his
presence at hours and places when distractions are minimized. Our spiritual
enemy will do all he can to distract…

High school principal visits 612 graduating seniors: Reframing the depth of the pandemic to experience God in depth

Wylie, Texas, is a town of fifty thousand people twenty-eight miles northeast of Dallas. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, none of the students graduating from Wylie High School will have a traditional graduation ceremony or other end-of-year events.

Since they could not come to the school, the school’s principal came to them. All 612 of them.

Virdie Montgomery spent 80 hours driving 800 miles over 12 days to visit each high school senior at their home. He explained, “The most valuable gift any of us can give anyone that isn’t replaceable is time. Where one spends one’s time says a lot about what they value.”

One of the seniors told CNN, “It kind of shows people that somebody does care for you out there. Most principals wouldn’t do that.”

Hiker posing for photo falls to her death

COVID-19 is affecting everyone, even those it does not infect. Some responses are positive, as Principal Montgomery shows. Others are tragic.

A hiker celebrating the end of her area’s coronavirus pandemic posed for a cliffside photo in Antalya, Turkey. She climbed over a safety fence to take the picture on the edge of a cliff in front of its scenic waterfalls. She then slipped on grass and fell roughly 115 feet to her death.

The US aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman began its deployment last November before the coronavirus outbreak began. Its 4,500 crew members are thus free of infection. As a paradoxical result, they cannot go home to their families because their ship is too valuable to end its deployment.

The hope is that once the Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group is up and running, the crew of the Truman can finally come home. But no one knows when that day will come.

I often say that God redeems all he allows. How could he redeem not only the suffering produced by COVID-19 but also the longevity of this pandemic?

“Suffering produces endurance”

Paul testified: “We rejoice in our sufferings,…

Five Likely Consequences of the Pandemic Most Church Leaders Do Not Expect

By Thom S. Rainer

There have been volumes written about the church world in a post-pandemic era. There have been webinars and blogs and podcasts and more. Indeed, I am one of those who has joined the chorus of voices sharing my perspectives with local congregations.

I have also been looking below the surface to see what might transpire that might not be readily obvious. These five likely consequences range from the trivial to the important.

  1. Many churches will always have one digital worship service available for emergencies. It is not unusual for a church to have one or more services a year that are canceled (or should be canceled) due to dangerous weather conditions. Since so many people have embraced streaming services, it will be easy to point them to a pre-recorded service if they can’t meet in person.
  1. Worship wars will decrease significantly. Church members have been exposed to a wide variety of worship styles during the pandemic. They now have the realization that the world does not come to an end when the style is not exactly their preference. There will be a greater openness to these worship styles in their own congregations.
  1. More churches will add automated door openers. Thanks to Tim Cool of Smart Church Solutions for making this observation in a podcast on Rainer on Leadership. People now prefer not to touch doors. These automatic openers are now affordable for most churches.
  1. Fewer churches will have a person handing out bulletins/worship folders. That’s one more point of…

Pray for Westside Christian Church

Location: Bradenton, Florida

Pastor: Tim Boyd

Weekly Worship: Sundays at 8:30, 9:45, & 11:00, Eastern

Fast Facts: Westside Christian Church in Bradenton, Florida is the recipient of Revitalize Network’s 2020 Church of the Year Growth Award.

Westside Church started several decades ago. For many years, they ministered to retirees who moved to Bradenton. The problem was the neighborhood began to change. It got younger and more diverse. The retirees got older. In order for the church to survive another generation, something had to be done. Since the church was not in crisis, Pastor Tim Boyd took a measured and careful approach. He taught what it meant to be a church focused on God’s mission. They reworked church polity. They developed leaders. They equipped and empowered the congregation for ministry.

During the first five years, change was slow, but then the neighborhood started to show up. Recently, Tim asked the congregation to raise their hands if they had attended Westside for less than a year. About 40% to 50% of the people put their hands in the air. The church now has three worship options on Sunday morning, and close to 300 people now call Westside Christian Church home.

Please pray for Pastor Tim and the members at Westside as they continue to grow and reach their neighborhood for Christ.

Joe Biden Releases Official Statement Denying Sexual Assault Allegations

Joe Biden Releases Official Statement Denying Sexual Assault Allegations

Joe Biden said Friday that the allegations of sexual assault of a former staffer are not true.

Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, released a full statement about the claim, Fox News reports. Former Senate staffer Tara Reade recently came forward, claiming that Biden sexually assaulted her while she worked in his Senate office in 1993.

“They aren’t true. This never happened,” Biden said in a written statement.

“While the details of these allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault are complicated, two things are not complicated. One is that women deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and when they step forward, they should be heard, not silenced. The second is that their stories should be subject to appropriate inquiry and scrutiny.”

Reade came forward in March with the allegation, saying Biden sexually assaulted her in 1993 when she worked as an aide in his Senate office. Earlier this week, a former neighbor of Reade said she remembers Reade confiding to her about the assault. Then a former colleague of Reade’s says she also recalls the incident.

Biden says there is no record that Reade complained to supervisors about the sexual assault, although Reade says she did tell senior staffers at the office. He added that the only place a complaint could be is in the National Archives. He has asked the Secretary of the Senate to search the Archives…
