Fauci Unveils ‘Clear-Cut Evidence’ New Drug Works against Coronavirus

COVID-19 patients given the drug Remdesivir in a government-funded placebo-controlled trial recovered faster and likely had a lower mortality rate, Dr. Anthony Fauci said at the White House Wednesday.

The trial of more than 1,000 individuals was sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases – which Fauci heads – and involved patients in multiple countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Spain and Greece.

The average time of recovery for coronavirus patients who were given Remdesivir was 11 days, compared to 15 days in the placebo group. The mortality rate in the Remdesivir group was 8 percent compared to 11 percent in the placebo group – a difference that has “not yet reached statistical significance” but still “trended towards being better,” Fauci said. More data needs to be analyzed to determine if Remdesivir has a statistically significant lower mortality rate, Fauci said.

Overall, the trial produced positive results, Fauci said. Gilead is the manufacturer.

“The data shows that Remdesivir has a clear-cut, significant positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery,” Fauci said. “This is really quite important for a number of reasons. … What it has proven is that a drug can block this virus.”

Remdesivir works by “blocking an enzyme that the virus uses,” Fauci said.

The results of the trial,…

What toy was the first to be advertised on TV? Two facts all parents should remember

Boy sitting on floor watching cartoons on television.

Toys are advertised all day every day. Children experience
advertising on TV, YouTube, apps, radio, billboards, magazines, newspapers,
movies, the internet, text messages, social media, and more. This is because
advertising works on children: the more TV a child watches, the more toys that
child is likely to want and ask for.

One common advertising strategy for children is the
“bribe”: you get a free toy when you buy a product. The
“game” invites them to play a game and win a prize if they buy a
product. The “big claim” promises that a product is the best in the
world or will make your life better.

The “super-person” makes you think you can be just like this famous or popular person if you have the product they are selling. Cartoon characters also sell toys to kids. Special effects and catchy music are employed. Ads use jokes or interesting stories to engage children.

As you can see, advertising toys to children is a big business. Think of all the toys made famous by ads over the years, from Barbie and Ken to video games and Beanie Babies.

But which toy was the first to be advertised on television? Mr.
Potato Head, who made his television premiere on this day in 1952.

Here’s my question: who thought up the idea of putting body
parts on a potato and calling it a toy?

A Brooklyn-born inventor named George Lerner, as it turns
out. But it wasn’t easy. Lerner came up with his idea in the early 1940s, when
food rationing from World War II was in the public mind and using fruits and
vegetables to make toys was considered irresponsible and wasteful. Toy
companies consistently rejected Lerner’s creation.

He persisted, finally bringing his invention to the market on this day. His was the first advertising campaign to be aimed directly at children. It revolutionized marketing and caused an industrial boom. Over one million toys were sold the first year. Mr. Potato…

Eric Metaxas, David French Highlight Evangelical Disagreement over Supporting President Trump

Eric Metaxas, David French Highlight Evangelical Disagreement over Supporting President Trump

A recent virtual conference highlighted the divide that still exists among some evangelicals about supporting President Trump in his bid for reelection.

Relevant Magazine reports that at Q2020, which featured talks from popular evangelicals such as Tim Keller, Priscilla Shirer, Ann Voskamp, Andy Crouch, Francis Chan, and Lecrae, Eric Metaxas and David French took part in a dialogue about evangelical backing of the President. Gabe Lyons, the founder of Q, hosted the conversation.

Lyons first asked Metaxas, host of a Christian radio program and author of books on Martin Luther and Deitrich Bonhoeffer, to explain his support for the President and why he feels “like that’s been important during this last election cycle and even moving into a re-election cycle.” Metaxas said that he “despised” Trump when he was running during the primaries, going so far as to write a piece for the New Yorker mocking Trump’s biblical illiteracy.

Metaxas explained that he was turned towards Trump by “the viciousness of the left toward him,” commenting that he has “never seen anything like it in my life.” He referenced the infamous “hot mic moment” behind the scenes on Access Hollywood, which took place in 2005, but became public in October 2016, just weeks before the election. After watching the 11-year-old tape surface, Metaxas said, “that level of…

Family finds the dog that saved them from a tornado: Surprising someone with God’s compassion today

Eric Johnson was asleep on March 3 when Bella, the family’s six-year-old miniature Australian shepherd, woke him up. She was behaving erratically, giving him the sense that “something just didn’t feel right.”

He turned on the television to learn that a tornado was headed toward his town of Cookeville, Tennessee. He put his wife and their three children in a bathtub and was looking for Bella when the tornado struck their house. Their home was destroyed; Johnson was thrown into his backyard. He suffered a head injury and his wife had broken ribs.

Bella was thrown into the yard and survived, but then went missing. Their family searched for her for weeks. A church friend and dog tracker finally found her in an alley four miles from their home. Johnson, his brother-in-law, and their pastor helped retrieve her.

After fifty-four days of living on her own, Bella was reunited with her family.

Using drones to deliver flowers

Help in hard times often comes from unexpected places.

Delivery robots are bringing goods and medical supplies to hospitals and others in need while helping support workers remain safe. Socially distanced people are using drones to deliver flowers, give virtual tours of quarantined cities, and even walk their dogs.

Turkey, which has become far more dictatorial and undemocratic in recent years, nonetheless has vowed solidarity with the United States during the pandemic. They recently sent 500,000 surgical masks, 4,000 overalls, 2,000 liters of disinfectant, 1,500 goggles, 400 N95 masks, and 500 face shields to the US.

I’ve been doing radio interviews nearly daily across recent weeks. One of the most common questions I’m asked is, “How can Christians make a difference in these days?” We all want to do what we can to help people and to honor our Lord.

In a secularized culture that condemns Christians for our supposed intolerance, how can we surprise others with his love and our…

10 States Ban In-Person Church Services, while 15 Have No Limits, Pew Finds

10 States Ban In-Person Church Services, while 15 Have No Limits, Pew Finds

Although 10 states currently prohibit churches from gathering in worship, most states have some sort of religious exemption and 15 states allow religious gatherings to continue without any limits, according to a new Pew Research Center study of the regulations in all 50 states.

Pew examined how social distancing requirements amid the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted religious gatherings in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Ten states prohibit in-person gatherings of any form: California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Minnesota, Montana and Vermont.

Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia specify in their orders that “religious gatherings can take place, but only if they are limited to 10 people or fewer,” Pew found. Two other states, Connecticut and Oregon, limit church gatherings to 50 and 25 people, respectively.

Fifteen states allow churches to continue gathering without any limits. Those states are Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Utah and Arizona.

Restrictions in some states, including in California, have sparked lawsuits.

“Perhaps with such litigation in mind, most other states have carved out exemptions for religious gatherings in their stay-at-home orders or other directives in an attempt to balance religious…

Record Number Have Called about Abortion Pill Reversal Process amid Pandemic, Pro-Life Group Says

Record Number Have Called about Abortion Pill Reversal Process amid Pandemic, Pro-Life Group Says

The Abortion Pill Rescue Network, a group that helps women try to reverse the effects of the abortion pill, says it has had a record number of calls.

“We are now seeing over 80% of our callers start the reversal process,” Andrea Trudden, communications director for Heartbeat International, told Live Action.

Heartbeat International oversees the Abortion Pill Rescue Network, The Christian Post reports.

In March, 105 mothers started the process to try to stop the chemically induced abortion from the abortion pill, RU-486.

The increase in calls likely stems from stay-at-home orders because of the coronavirus pandemic. In many states, abortion clinics have been ordered to close.

“We understand this is a stressful time for many, and some women are starting chemical abortion because that is the only option they can see,” Trudden said.

Trudden said many of the calls come from “the abortion facility parking lot or from the car on the drive home because the regret is immediate.”

The abortion pill, mifepristone, blocks the progesterone hormone. A second pill, Misoprostol, causes contractions, cramps and the passing of pregnancy tissue.

“If a mother who changes her mind after beginning a chemical abortion receives supplemental progesterone before taking the second pill, there is a chance to save the baby’s life and continue with a normal pregnancy,” Live Action…

Tara Reade’s Former Neighbor Says Reade Confided in Her about Sexual Assault by Joe Biden

Tara Reade’s Former Neighbor Says Reade Confided in Her about Sexual Assault by Joe Biden

A former neighbor of a woman who is accusing Joe Biden of sexual assault says the woman, Tara Reade, confided in her about the alleged assault.

According to CNN, Lynda LaCasse says in 1995 or 1996, she was smoking a cigarette on her front stoop and talking with Reade about a custody battle for her children. LaCasse was crying when Reade started crying too.

“She started talking about Joe Biden,” LaCasse said. “And I didn’t really know much about Joe Biden.”

LaCasse said that Reade told her that when she was working in Washington years before, Biden “had pushed her up against a wall and he put his hand up her skirt and he put his fingers inside of her, and she was dealing with the aftermath of that.”

The Biden campaign is denying Reade’s allegation.

“Vice President Biden has dedicated his public life to changing the culture and the laws around violence against women,” a statement from Biden’s team said. “He authored and fought for the passage and reauthorization of the landmark Violence Against Women Act. He firmly believes that women have a right to be heard – and heard respectfully.

“Such claims should also be diligently reviewed by an independent press. What is clear about this claim: it is untrue. This absolutely did not happen.”

Reade came forward in March with the allegation, saying Biden sexually assaulted her in 1993 when she worked as an aid in…

William and Kate’s ninth wedding anniversary: The promise of eternal life and hope in Christ

Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge make their way to Buckingham Palace after the Royal Wedding in London Friday, April, 29, 2011.

In an article posted earlier today, I wrote about King Edward VIII’s decision to abdicate his throne in order to marry an American divorcee named Wallis Simpson. Simpson was buried on this day in 1986 next to her husband, who had died fourteen years earlier.

In a twist of historical irony, on this same day in 2011,
Prince William and Kate Middleton were married at Westminster Abbey. Nearly two
thousand guests were in attendance. A half million supporters greeted the newly
appointed Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they shared a kiss on the balcony of
Buckingham Palace.

The couple released a photo of their wedding today to mark their ninth wedding anniversary. The official Kensington Palace Twitter account wrote: “Nine years ago today—thank you for all your lovely messages on The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding anniversary!” The couple are celebrating the day “privately” due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The promise of eternal life and hope in Christ

Paul described marriage as “an illustration of the way
Christ and the church are one” (Ephesians 5:32 NLT). As he noted, “a
man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two
shall become one flesh” (v. 31 ESV).

When a man and a woman marry, they commit themselves to each
other in a permanent covenant. They pledge mutual faithfulness that excludes
all others.

If you have trusted in Christ as your Savior and Lord, this
is the commitment he has made to you. He said of his followers, “I give
them eternal life, and they will never perish and no one will be able to snatch
them out of my hand” (John 10:28). God’s word is clear: “If anyone is
in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has
come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

When you were “born…
