Couple Abducted from Wedding in Attacks in Northwest Nigeria that Kill 12 Christians

JOS, Nigeria, April 29, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Muslim Fulani herdsmen in northwest Nigeria killed 12 Christians and kidnapped a couple from their church wedding ceremony in attacks this month, sources said.

In Tegina Kabata village in Niger state’s Shiroro County, herdsmen attacked a church site where a wedding was taking place on April 12, abducting the couple and some church members, area resident Danjuma Iliya told Morning Star News.

“As the pastor was officiating during the wedding solemnization, the herdsmen stormed the church and took away everyone who was unable to escape from the church building, including the bride and groom,” Iliya said. “In that village, five Christians were killed in the series of attacks carried out by the herdsmen.”

Two other Christians were killed by herdsmen in Niger state’s Gidigori village, Kusherki District, in Rafi County, on April 20, area resident James Ayuba said. They were two of seven Christians killed in three herdsmen attacks over five days in Rafi County, he said.

Others were injured in herdsmen attacks in the county’s Madaka and Sabon Gari villages on April 20-21, he said.

‘We Are Working Together’: Pastor Shares How People in Detroit Are Uniting to Combat the Coronavirus

‘We Are Working Together’: Pastor Shares How People in Detroit Are Uniting to Combat the Coronavirus

Mention Detroit, and Tommy Conley’s face lights up. Conley – who is a Pastor at New Way Christian Center – loves his native city of Detroit and wants others to love it too.

For Conley, Detroit isn’t just his hometown, it’s a place he feels called to be. Like many urban cities, Detroit has been battered by the effects of the Coronavirus.

While Conley, who has lost countless friends and two uncles in the same week, shares that his faith is still on steady ground, he would admit that there have been days of intense grief and sadness as he has watched those whom he serves struggle or even become ill.

“I’ve seen better days, but I also hold out hope knowing that God has a plan for all of the things that were going through,” Conley shared.

The pastor told Christian Headlines in an interview that he sees himself as a servant of God and knows that he has been called to serve on the frontlines through ministry in the midst of a city’s difficult fight against the pandemic.

The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Please tell our audience about your love and heart for Detroit?

I have always had a strong love for the city of Detroit. It was the place I was birthed, the place where my children were born, where I got married and where I found Christ. Detroit has such great traditions, we have great people, great entertainment and great food…

Rapper DMX Leads Instagram Bible Study, Urges Fans to Give ‘Your Life to Jesus’

Rapper DMX Leads Instagram Bible Study, Urges Fans to Give ‘Your Life to Jesus’

Saying “God put it on my heart to speak,” award-winning rapper DMX held a Bible study on Instagram over the weekend and even urged his fans to accept Jesus.

“Get into the Word,” he encouraged the 14,000-plus who were watching.

DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, rose to musical fame in the late 1990s and 2000s on the strength of albums that carried parental advisories for explicit lyrics, winning two American Music Awards and getting three Grammy nominations. Over the weekend, though, his focus was on Scripture.

DMX, now 49, read from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, Ecclesiastes 3:16-17 and parts of Ecclesiastes 4.

“The best thing that we can hope for – the most important thing we can hope or pray for or ask for – is that our desires coincide with God’s will,” he said.

At one point DMX read Ecclesiastes 3:5 – there will be a “time for embracing and a time for avoiding embraces” – and paused to reflect on the modern-day parallel during the pandemic.

He urged his fans to learn to pray and not rely on the prayers of others: “Your own prayer will do a lot better than someone else praying for you.”

He spoke of the current lockdown: “God is giving you the time … to get closer to him.”

He encouraged them to receive Christ: “Whoever hasn’t given your life to Jesus yet, whoever hasn’t surrendered all the way … I’m going to walk you through that right now.”…

WWII veteran receives 125,000 birthday cards: God uses us as we are, not as we wish to be

On April 27, 2020, Captain Tom Moore’s grandson Benjie stands in the Great Hall of Bedford School, Bedfordshire, where over 120,000 birthday cards sent from around the world are being opened and displayed by staff.

Captain Tom Moore is a British World War II veteran. He recently raised more than $36 million for the National Health Service by completing laps of his garden with the help of a walker. People tuned in online from across the globe to watch his progress and support his cause.

Veteran Captain Tom Moore at his home in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, on April 16, 2020, after achieving his goal of 100 laps of his garden.

Capt. Moore turns one hundred Thursday. In response, well-wishers have sent him more than 125,000 birthday cards

James Hodgson, headmaster of the nearby Bedford School in central England, has taken on the gargantuan task of opening and displaying the cards. “It’s the most amazing outpouring of love for a great man,” he says.

The floor of his school has become a sea of goodwill wishes. Volunteers have spent hours reading them over the last week. Hodgson said, “We’ve had cards from all around the world, not just the UK . . . we’ve had cards from two-year-olds and we’ve had cards from 92-year-olds.” The plan is to display as many as possible and send Capt. Moore a photo of the results.

One hand-drawn card from eleven-year-old Rebekah in South Wales read: “To My Hero! Thank you for all you have done. You will help a lot of people with the money you have raised xx.”

“Give me this hill country”

I’m sure Capt. Moore remembers the days when he was spry and youthful. He probably thought as a young soldier that his deployment during World War II was his greatest service to his country. But his commitment decades later to help those in need has made him a global hero.

We can learn a lesson here: God’s people never retire.

Moses served the Lord until his death at the…

More Than $400,000 So Far Raised for Small Churches at Risk during COVID-19

More Than $400,000 So Far Raised for Small Churches at Risk during COVID-19

(RNS) — An initiative that seeks to financially help small and struggling churches in the wake of COVID-19 has raised more than $400,000 and received over 1,000 applications for funding.

Through the Churches Helping Churches Initiative, a relief fund was set up to provide $3,000 grants to churches at risk of closing due to a decrease in financial giving during the pandemic. The initiative is led by the AND Campaign, with support from other organizations such as the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, Pinkston and the Pinetops Foundation.

As part of this effort, national Christian groups are urging larger and more stable churches to contribute and help keep these small churches open.

Organizers hope to raise at least $500,000 in April through help from Christian donors, foundations and large churches. They will continue to fundraise money through May, Pinkston Vice President D.J. Jordan said.

An application process opened April 6 for small churches to apply for the grants. Through the relief fund, 68 churches have each been granted $3,000, Jordan said. About 980 applications have been submitted.

Deliverance Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, Hold the Light COGIC in Detroit, Plantando Iglesias in Minneapolis and Union Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago are among the churches that have received funding.

Jordan said they’ll still be accepting applications in May, but…

North Korea Urged to Release Christian Serving 15 Years for Spreading Gospel

North Korea Urged to Release Christian Serving 15 Years for Spreading Gospel

Voice of the Martyrs has launched a campaign seeking the release of Jang Moon Seok, an ethnic Korean Chinese Christian who was kidnapped along the border by North Korea and sentenced to 15 years in prison for telling North Koreans about Christ.

Jang recently spent his 2,000th day in prison.

[Jang] is a simple man who never did anything political,” said Voice of the Martyrs Korea representative Hyun Sook Foley. “He just helped North Korean people for many years. That should never be a crime, and Christians should join together to help Deacon Jang and his family.”

Jang was friends with pastor Han Chung-Ryeol, a Chinese man who lived along the border and discipled 1,000 North Koreans before being killed by North Korean assassins in 2016. Christian Headlines profiled Han last year.

Jang ministered to defecting North Koreans in Changbai, China, alongside Pastor Han.

“We believe the reason for [Jang’s] kidnapping was to gather information about the North Korean ministry work we were doing with Pastor Han,” Foley said.

He is serving a 15-year prison sentence for defaming the regime, attempting to incite subversion of state power, and providing aid and the gospel to North Koreans. Several North Koreans have encountered Jang in prison since 2014, Voice of the Martyrs said.

Voice of the Martyrs is urging Christians to email or write Kim Song, North Korean’s ambassador to…

Wallis Simpson buried on this day in 1986: The king who abdicated his throne for the one he loved

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor pose after their wedding at the Chateau de Cande near Tours, in France on June 3, 1937.

The Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, was buried alongside
her husband on this day in 1986.

Simpson was an American socialite in her second marriage when
she met her future husband at a party. She became his mistress. It became clear
that he intended to marry her as soon as her second divorce was complete,
sparking a massive scandal in Britain now known as the “abdication
crisis.”

Church of England leaders and the British establishment
maintained that the king could not marry a divorced woman who still had two
living ex-husbands. The king’s government ministers concurred and found
Wallis’s personal behavior unacceptable. In addition, many Britons were
reluctant to accept an American as their queen.

Wallis fled to France during this time to avoid heavy press
coverage. On December 11, 1936, Edward delivered a BBC broadcast saying he
could not do his job without the support of “the woman I love.”

King Edward VIII abdicated his throne to be with her; the couple was married on June 3, 1937.

The king’s decision to leave his throne for Wallis Simpson changed British history. His brother, George VI, succeeded him to the throne and led Great Britain through World War II. Upon his death in 1952, he was succeeded by his oldest daughter, Elizabeth.

Queen Elizabeth II, now ninety-four years old, is the
longest-reigning monarch in British history.

The king who abdicated his throne for the one he loved

Scripture tells of another monarch who left his throne out
of love. Paul described this event: “Have this mind among yourselves,
which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not
count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking
the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in
human form, he humbled himself by becoming…

New Orleans Bishop Highlights the Importance of Ministry amid the Pandemic

New Orleans Bishop Highlights the Importance of Ministry amid the Pandemic

Known as the Big Easy, many ministers would argue New Orleans is anything but easy when it comes to ministry. Known more for its partying scene than its church life, sharing the Gospel in an effective way can be tricky.

But now, as New Orleans has been one of the hardest-hit American cities by COVID-19, ministry has become particularly important. Bishop Onassis Jones, pastor of Christ Temple Church of New Orleans, believes that God has called him and given him the mandate to minister in New Orleans. Jones believes that he, along with other pastors in the city, is on the frontline of the pandemic and standing on the promises that all things work together for good.

The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

How has your life changed as a pastor in the city of New Orleans?

As a pastor in the City of New Orleans, my life has changed in so many facets throughout my nineteen years of pastoring. As a native of New Orleans, raised and reared in the church, it has always been my desire to witness the manifestation of salvation and wholeness throughout Metropolitan New Orleans and surrounding communities. Therefore, my ministry approach derives from a holistic perspective – spirit, soul, and body. My mission is to teach and train disciples so that they can apply and execute biblical principles in all areas of their lives.  My life as a pastor has drastically changed…

‘Secret group of scientists and billionaires’ working to ‘stop COVID-19’: The transformative power of unity

The Wall Street Journal broke the story that is now making headlines everywhere: “The Secret Group of Scientists and Billionaires Pushing a Manhattan Project for Covid-19.”

They call themselves “Scientists to Stop Covid-19.” Their group includes chemical biologists, an immunobiologist, a neurobiologist, a chronobiologist, an oncologist, a gastroenterologist, an epidemiologist, and a nuclear scientist. Biologist Michael Rosbash, a 2017 Nobel Prize winner, says that of all the scientists at the center of the project, “There’s no question that I’m the least qualified.”

Their work had not been reported before the Journal article. They are led by a thirty-three-year-old physician-turned-venture capitalist named Tom Cahill. He lives in a one-bedroom rental near Boston’s Fenway Park and owns just one suit. But his connections through his investment firm have made the group’s work possible.

The article describes scientific proposals from the group that are already being discussed or implemented by government leaders. They are now looking at ideas for the post-COVID-19 world.

No one involved with the effort stands to gain financially. Their desire is to add their expertise and connections to the coronavirus battle effort. Stuart Schreiber, a Harvard University chemist and member of the group, says, “We may fail. But if it succeeds, it could change the world.”

A teleconference that impressed me greatly

One of the most hopeful aspects of the pandemic is the fact that the entire world is united in fighting it. Our best minds from around the globe are focused on our common foe. Unlike a war in which nations fight each other, this is a conflict in which our enemy has made us all allies.

We are seeing such collaboration not just in science but across our nation and culture. This is one way God is redeeming this crisis.

Jesus prayed in John 17 that his followers would be united “so that the world may…

10 Ways to “Jump Start” Your Personal Evangelism

By Chuck Lawless

Even as a professor of evangelism, I have to continually push myself to do evangelism. For what it’s worth (and frankly, as a matter of accountability), here are some steps I’m taking to move in the right direction:

  1. Ask God daily to let me see people as He sees them. I tend to see people as the driver in the car who cut me off, the cashier at the gas station, and the neighbor whose name I don’t know. God sees them as sheep without a shepherd and souls for whom Jesus died.
  2. Ask other believers to pray at least once a week that I will speak the gospel boldly and clearly. This approach is nothing more than what Paul asked the Ephesians and the Colossians to do for him (Eph. 6:18-20; Col. 4:2-4). If Paul needed that kind of prayer support, I surely do.
  3. Ask God to renew my fire for Him. The bottom line for me is this: I do evangelism when I’m most amazed by Jesus. That’s why I wrote Nobodies for Jesus, and now I’m being challenged like never before to apply personally my own teachings.
  4. Pray by name for non-believers at least once a week. I often pray every day for some non-believer, but I have also set up one weekly focused time for praying that God would open the blinded minds of non-believers (2 Cor. 4:3-4).
  5. Strive to speak a good word about God to somebody each day. God is so majestic and His blessings are so numerous that I have no reason not to speak of His goodness. Even if I daily speak those words to only a believer, I develop the practice of moving conversations…
