Josh McDowell Warns that the Pandemic Could Increase Loneliness, Depression, Porn Use

Christian author and teacher Josh McDowell recently shared his concerns that the COVID-19 lockdowns are going to fan the flames on two major issues already facing American culture: pornography addiction and loneliness.

According to CBN News, McDowell expounds on these issues in a document on his website called “What Comes Next?”

McDowell, author of Evidence that Demands a Verdict and other books aimed at helping Christians to defend and share their faith, claims that before the pandemic, “three top themes in mental health that were reaching epidemic proportion were: 1) Pornography addiction, 2) Loneliness, and 3) Anxiety, depression, as well as other issues. These themes have been true globally in nearly every culture.” He then expressed his concern that “The COVID-19 lockdown will not pacify any of the three previous epidemics. Isolation will only exacerbate anxiety, depression, pornography addiction, loneliness and mental health problems.”

He fears the pandemic will only accelerate issues related to loneliness and isolation. He said that the period after the pandemic will be, “a time characterized by intense anxiety, depression, loneliness and other mental health issues.” He said that this will be especially true with college students, two-thirds of whom already reported feeling “very lonely.” He added, “that can be as hard on your health as…

Tom Hanks wants to create a ‘Hank-ccine’ for coronavirus: Trusting God’s sovereign love with our needs

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson arrive at the Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on February 9, 2020.

Tom Hanks says the blood he and his wife, Rita Wilson, donated after recovering from coronavirus should go toward a “Hank-ccine.” He and his wife also hope to donate plasma to COVID-19 patients.

They were the first celebrities
to test positive for a disease that has now infected more than three million
people and killed more than two hundred thousand. Their illness is a reminder
that this virus knows no status and is restricted to no social class.

Their story came to mind when I
read Isaiah 24 recently and found this description of God’s judgment: “And
it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the slave, so with
his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with
the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the creditor, so
with the debtor. The earth shall be utterly empty and utterly plundered; for
the LORD has spoken this word” (vv. 2–3).

I do not read these verses as
predicting the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, interpreters typically consider
them to be apocalyptic descriptions of the end of history and God’s judgment
against sinful humanity.

But I did notice the degree to
which such judgment will be administered equally, from people to priest, from
slave to master, from buyer to seller. This fact shows that God’s sovereignty
transcends every division and classification of human history. He is truly Lord
over all.

Trusting God’s sovereign love with our needs

There is another side to this principle:
just as God can judge all who sin, he can pardon all who seek his forgiving
grace (1 John 1:9). Just as he can punish all who transgress, he can forgive
all who repent.

Jesus encountered no illness he could not cure, no need he could not meet, no leper he could not cleanse, no corpse he could not raise.

In other words, our God is more
than able to…

Holocaust survivor honored 75 years after his liberation: How people you don’t know change your world

Holocaust survivor Max Glauben speaks to students at Odessa College on Friday, March 2, 2018.

Max Glauben was liberated from the Holocaust on April 23, 1945. His parents and brother were murdered by the Nazis.

He came to the US as an orphan, served in the US Army, met his wife Frieda, and started a family that now includes three children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He helped launch the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. Since 2005, he has returned to concentration camp sites fourteen times, leading March of the Living trips.

Each time, he goes to a mausoleum that holds seven tons of human ashes and recites a prayer for the dead. “I look at the ashes, the seven tons of ashes, and I wonder how many of the owners of these ashes, how many diseases they could’ve cured,” he says.

Mr. Glauben intended to spend the seventy-fifth anniversary of his liberation back overseas on his fifteenth March of the Living trip. But because of the coronavirus pandemic, the trip was canceled.

Last Thursday, he expected to spend the day at home with family but went outside to find an amazing surprise: a drive-by procession was held to celebrate him and his story of survival.

When asked how to move forward when you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, Mr. Glauben said, “Never, never, never, never give up. Enjoy life and try to treat everybody that you are surrounded with the way you’d like to be treated.”

A vaccine by October?

You may not have heard of Max Glauben before today. However, every person he teaches about the atrocities of the Holocaust who then works to confront anti-Semitism will benefit the world as a result of his efforts.

In other news, a vaccine developed by Oxford University will begin testing on more than six thousand people by the end of next month. If it is shown to be safe and effective, the first few million doses could be available by September.

Another…

Fox News Host Shares How Her Faith Is Sustaining Her during the Pandemic

Fox News Host Shares How Her Faith Is Sustaining Her during the Pandemic

Fox News Host Ainsley Earhardt recently shared how her faith is sustaining her during the coronavirus pandemic.

Earhardt opened up about her faith when she joined Faithwire on a Zoom call to talk about a special she will be participating in this Sunday as part of Fox News’ “America Together” initiative. The special will be “Focused on sharing stories of perseverance and faith in uncertain times.

She explained why she is pulled towards positive stories, especially during these difficult days. She said, “Just like I’m drawn to the good news of the Bible, I’m drawn – and everyone is, whether you’re a Christian or whatever your faith might be– we’re all drawn to bringing out the positive in a tough situation.”

Earhardt has seen her share of difficulties in the last few years, but she has also seen how her faith in God helped her to endure. She told Faithwire that in every trial she has dealt with, she “knew God saw the future and I knew he had a reason and I knew that problem was going to lead me to a much brighter place.” The dark place she found herself in in 2018 was the end of her marriage to her 4-year-old daughter’s father. In spite of walking through this valley, she said, “I just hold onto the hope and the fact that He sees my future.”

The Fox & Friends co-host linked her past difficulties to what we are walking through together through the…

Black Church, Civil Rights Leaders Urge Churchgoers to Continue to ‘Tele-Worship’

Black Church, Civil Rights Leaders Urge Churchgoers to Continue to ‘Tele-Worship’

(RNS) — Top officials of seven black Christian denominations have joined civil rights leaders in calling for people to stay home until it is safe in states whose governors are lifting shelter-in-place orders.

“We regard this pandemic as a grave threat to the health and life of our people, and as a threat to the integrity and vitality of the communities we are privileged to serve,” they wrote in a statement released Friday (April 24). “For these reasons, we encourage all Black churches and businesses to remain closed during this critical period.”

The signatories include leaders of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church; Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; Church of God in Christ; National Baptist Convention of America, International, Inc.; National Baptist Convention, U.S.A. Inc.; and Progressive National Baptist Convention Inc.

Some of those denominations have tallied or been the subject of reports of COVID-19 deaths among their clergy and members.

“The denominations and independent churches represented in this statement, which comprise a combined membership of more than 25 million people and more than 30,000 congregations, intend to remain closed and to continue to worship virtually, with the same dedication and love that we brought to the church,” they added.

The denominational officials and faith leaders, including…

44 Percent of American Believers Think Jesus Sinned, New Survey Finds

44 Percent of American Believers Think Jesus Sinned, New Survey Finds

The latest findings from The American Worldview Inventory 2020 (AWVI 2020) show that some 44 percent of American believers think that Jesus sinned.

The survey also revealed a dramatic decline in the number of Americans who hold to a biblical worldview.

According to the survey, about 51 percent of American adults have a traditional view of God as opposed to 73 percent in 1991, a 22 percent drop from 30 years ago.

Regarding belief in Jesus, 44 percent of respondents who believe in Jesus, also believe he sinned, whereas 41 percent say he did not.

Fifty-two percent believe that “the Holy Spirit is not a living entity, but merely a symbol of God’s power, presence or purity.”

Additionally, the survey revealed that more people believe in Satan (56 percent) than believe in God (51 percent) as an influential spiritual being. Additionally, 49 percent are unsure if God exists at all.

Director of Research at the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University and founder of the Barna Group, Dr. George Barna wrote in a statement regarding the survey’s finding, “Tens of millions of Americans consider themselves to be Christian but do not believe that God is really in control or cares what happens to them.”

He noted the shift in worldview from thirty years ago, saying that people went from “learning and

thinking about God” to becoming “more self-absorbed”, rejecting the existence…

‘Quarantine Revival’ – 132,000 Respond to Jesus during Virtual Evangelistic Event

‘Quarantine Revival’ – 132,000 Respond to Jesus during Virtual Evangelistic Event

More than 130,000 individuals around the world made the decision to come to Christ during a Good Friday virtual evangelistic event that was hosted by Pulse and featured well-known Christian leaders and singers, according to new data.

Since the virtual revival was hosted tens of thousands of people have reached out to Pulse to share their decision to follow Jesus through phone call centers, emails, websites and text messages. Pulse founder Nick Hall said in a Saturday tweet that a total of 132,000 people “responded to Jesus” due to the Good Friday broadcast and more than 100 million people tuned in.

“We were literally getting smartphone photos from all over the world – from Nigeria to India and China – of families gathering in their living rooms, around 18-inch cathode-ray TVs, laptops and HD screens watching our services,” Hall said in a statement. “The doors to our church buildings may have been closed, but the church has not closed. We are living through a Great Quarantine Revival, and I think God is just getting started.”

The Good Friday streaming broadcast – still…

Britain May Ban Transgender Treatments for Children to Guard Them from ‘Irreversible’ Harm

Britain May Ban Transgender Treatments for Children to Guard Them from ‘Irreversible’ Harm

A member of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s cabinet signaled last week the government may move to ban transgender treatments for minors out of a desire to prevent “irreversible” damage.

Liz Truss, who is the Minister for Women and Equalities as well as Minister of State for Trade Policy, made the comments to a parliamentary committee Wednesday.

“I believe strongly that adults should have the freedom to lead their lives as they see fit,” she said, according to Sky News. “But I think it’s very important that while people are still developing their decision-making capabilities that we protect them from making those irreversible decisions.”

The government’s new rules would apply to those under 18.

James Kirkup, a writer for the British magazine The Spectator, noted puberty-blocking medications taken by children might reduce fertility in adulthood. He also repeated a truism among supporters of Truss: “A transgender child is like a vegetarian cat. You know who’s really making the decisions.” In other words, parents often are the ones pushing children to transition.

“Some people involved in the trans debate have been screaming for years now about this,” he wrote. “They say that the result of successful lobbying by trans campaigners, groupthink among clinicians and lack of oversight by politicians intent on staying out of the trans minefield is…

A movie experience from my childhood is the new future: Hearing the surprising voice of God

Patrons watch a movie as the sun sets over Bengies Drive-In Theatre in Middle River, Md on July 26, 2013. The drive-in theater, long a dwindling nostalgia act in a multiplex world, is experiencing a momentary return to prominence.

One of my fondest memories as a child was going to drive-in
movies with my parents.

My father was a John Wayne fan, so we went to Westerns
regularly. There was a strange sense of community in watching a movie along
with people in hundreds of other cars all parked in front of a giant screen.

Now that memory is becoming one of the iconic images of the
coronavirus pandemic. Churches are holding drive-in worship services where
members stay in their cars, watch the minister and screen in front, and listen
through their radios. And more and more people are finding drive-in theaters to
watch movies during stay-at-home restrictions.

CNN reports on this phenomenon, but in a generational sign of the times, the article must first explain what a drive-in theater is: “The drive-in experience allows people to watch a movie projected on a screen from the safety of one’s vehicle.”

Four months ago, who would have imagined that I would
writing on this subject today?

Hearing the surprising voice of God

In Acts 27 we find Paul and his missionary team traveling
toward Rome. It was the fall, a “dangerous” time of year to be
sailing the Mediterranean (v. 9). Nonetheless, “when the south wind blew
gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and
sailed along Crete, close to the shore” (v. 13).

However, it only took one verse for fair weather to turn to
life-threatening storms: “But soon a tempestuous wind, called the
northeaster, struck down from the land” (v. 14). The English Standard
Version Study Bible notes: “Such northeasters are extremely dangerous in
this region, appearing suddenly with violent, whirling winds caused by a
meeting of opposite air currents.”

This…
