Police Arrest Pastor on Fabricated Charges in Pakistan, Sources Say

LAHORE, Pakistan, April 27, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Presbyterian assistant pastor Sarfaraz Raja was preparing to deliver a Good Friday sermon in Pakistan on April 10 when his brother informed him by phone that police had intruded into his house and were harassing his mother and other family members.

Upset that the pastor had complained of police misbehavior and knowing that Christians had little status in the 96-percent Muslim society, the officers were planning to frame him on trumped-up charges of making and selling liquor, sources said.

“I excused myself from the sermon and immediately rushed to my home accompanied by the village headman, Chaudhry Ranjeet Lal, and some other people,” said Pastor Raja of Youngsen Memorial Church in Youngsenabad village in Nankana District, Punjab Province.

They arrived to find Sub-Inspector Malik Shahbaz Ahmed and five other policemen in the courtyard threatening his mother and other family members, he said.

“I asked the police why had they entered my house without a warrant and were misbehaving with my family, at which point SI Shahbaz, instead of explaining the purpose of his raid, grabbed my collar and bundled me into their official vehicle amid protests by my family members and the village elders,” Pastor Raja said.

Police also arrested his uncle, Manzoor Raja, known as Kaali, who lives with the family, he said.

The pastor said that upon…

‘We Know Where Our Hope Comes From’ –

Tenn. Gov. Points to Christ at Drive-In Service: ‘We Know Where Our Hope Comes From’

While some government leaders have discouraged drive-in church services, on Sunday in Tennessee, the state’s governor attended a drive-in service – and even delivered a word of inspiration from Scripture.

Gov. Bill Lee attended a multi-church “Beyond Our Walls” worship service Sunday evening at the Williamson County Ag Expo Park, where members from more than 15 churches throughout the area drove their cars to a large parking lot to pray, sing and listen to various speakers. Way-FM (88.7), a local Christian station, broadcast the event.

The event benefited One Generation Away, an organization that distributes food to families in Middle Tennessee.

“Thank you for everything that every one of you are doing,” Lee told attendees from the stage. “Thank you for doing your part to stay apart. Thank you for loving your neighbors as yourself. Thank you for serving in food banks. Thank you for serving in non-profits, and thank you for serving in your neighborhood.

“… Thank you for praying. Thank you for praying for me and for [Tennessee First Lady] Maria [Lee]. Thank you for praying for leaders all across this state. Thank you for praying for those who are sick. Thank you for praying for the families of those that have lost loved ones. … And thank you for having hope. In this world we’ll have many troubles, but we know where our hope comes from, and He has…

One Year after Blaze, Debates Continue to Rage on about the Future of Notre Dame

One Year after Blaze, Debates Continue to Rage on about the Future of Notre Dame

(RNS) — One year after the Cathedral of Notre Dame was nearly destroyed by a fire, its future remains uncertain. Prominent voices in France continue to argue about what should happen to the medieval gothic structure once its complex reconstruction is completed.

The citizens of France and the entire world watched with terror as the roof and steeple of the landmark cathedral collapsed from the blaze on April 15, 2019, even as firemen and art experts worked tirelessly to salvage the historic treasures inside.

In the aftermath of the blaze, French President Emanuel Macron promised his people that “The Old Dame” of Paris would be rebuilt in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics hosted by the French capital. The COVID-19 pandemic necessarily put a halt on the efforts in mid-March, but reconstruction is scheduled to resume next Monday (April 27).

Yet Notre Dame remains under fire. Architects and restorers in France cannot agree on the style of the renovations, while historians and prelates debate its soul. Once the debris is removed, the roof rebuilt and the stained glass is cleaned, what will be the purpose of this symbol of France and the Catholic faith?

“What cathedral should be built for the XXI century?” asked Bishop Michel Aupetit of Paris in a reflection recently published in the French Catholic paper La Croix.

“What it is has always been due to the meaning behind its…

An often-overlooked verse that seems irrelevant but changes everything

Stock photo

Today’s Special Edition will be different. Rather than focusing on something in the news which calls us to fight fear with faith, we will focus on a single verse in Scripture that calls us to do the same.

Over the weekend, I came upon this statement: “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 26:1).

As I read the verse, I sensed the clear leading of the Holy Spirit to reflect on it.

These reflections became this article as I became convinced that this ancient command speaks to every dimension of our lives and world.

The irrelevance of idolatry

Leviticus 26:1 was obviously relevant in a day when Israel’s Promised Land would be filled with Canaanites worshipping Baal, Ashtoreth, Molech, and a host of other idolatrous deities.

But how is it relevant to us?

One of the foundational principles of Christian theology is that the Bible is the word of God, not just that it was. Its words are as relevant today as when they were first inspired. It is “living and active” with present-tense authority to speak divine truth into our lives and culture (Hebrews 4:12).

And yet, Jews and Christians are seldom confronted today with the temptation to “set up a figured stone in your land.”

In my many trips to the Holy Land, I have found the Jewish people to be tempted far more by secularism and materialism than by apparent religious idolatry. It is the same in America and Europe.

I’ve been preaching for forty-four years, but I have yet to preach my first sermon against physical idols. That’s because they are so irrelevant to our lives and souls.

The relevance of idolatry

But another foundational principle of Christian theology is that where the Bible does not speak as precept, it speaks as principle.

For example, Christians are not…

Many Churches Plan to Reopen Soon across the U.S.

Many Churches Plan to Reopen Soon across the U.S.

Some churches in the U.S. are making plans to reopen after weeks of online-only worship services.

According to The Christian Post, many states are working to slowly reopen after being shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A pastor panel survey from earlier this month found that nearly half of pastors hope to be back in their buildings by May. The other half thought that they wouldn’t return to churches until June or later.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced last week that the state will reopen slowly starting May 4.

In an Indiana city, Pastor Dave Sumrall of I-Town Church said they would reopen for church services this week despite a stay-at-home order. The church will only allow 10 people at a time for services and will hold multiple services.

“We are officially in a situation where your religious freedoms have been removed in the interest of public health,” Sumrall said in a message posted on the church’s Instagram page. “So on one hand, the church has been deemed essential. But on the other, we’re not allowed to gather. I personally believe this is an attack on what the definition of a church is.”

In New York, the Syracuse Diocese is looking at holding outdoor services for a while and then moving to small masses.

“I feel we must err on the side of caution in order to eradicate this deadly virus from our communities and will continue to follow the directives of local authorities,”…

North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Un Is Rumored to Be Dead, South Korean Officials Say Rumors Are False

North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Un Is Rumored to Be Dead, South Korean Officials Say Rumors Are False

South Korea says rumors that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is sick or dead are untrue.

According to Fox News, a top South Korean official said there is “enough intelligence to confidently say that there are no unusual developments” in North Korea.

Kim, 36, also reportedly released a note of thanks on Monday to workers building a tourism area in North Korea.

The news bulletin came without images or video or mention of the rumors.

Rumors about Kim’s health started when he did not appear at the April 15 commemoration of the 108 birthday of his grandfather and North Korean founder, Kim II Sun, the Associated Press reports.

Kim had not missed the commemoration since he assumed the top position in the country in 2011.

The South Korean government has said they believe Kim is staying outside the capital.

“Our government position is firm,” Chung-in Moon, foreign policy adviser to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, told Fox News. “Kim Jong Un is alive and well. He has been staying in the Wonsan area since April 13. No suspicious movements have so far been detected.”

Meanwhile, satellite imagery provided by 38 North showed that a train likely belonging to Kim has been parked at his compound since last week.

“The train’s presence does not prove the whereabouts of the North Korean leader or indicate anything about his health, but it does lend weight to reports…

Dallas Cowboys drafted player they had a 1 percent chance to get: Listening to God before we speak

In this still image from video provided by the NFL, Trevon Diggs, third from right, talks on the phone as he’s selected by the Dallas Cowboys during the second round of the NFL football draft, Friday, April 24, 2020.

There
has been so little sports news to follow due to the pandemic that last
weekend’s NFL Draft became must-watch TV for many of us. One of the story lines
that interested me happened to come from my hometown Dallas Cowboys.

They
prepared for the draft with the absolute expectation that CeeDee Lamb, the player
they considered the best receiver in the country, would be gone before they
drafted at No. 17. As a result, they made not a single mock draft that included
him. Everyone assumed they would draft a defensive player.

When
Lamb was surprisingly available, however, they threw away their plan and
drafted him.

In the
second round, they were shocked again when Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs was
still available at No. 51. When asked the chances that Diggs would be
available, the team said later, “All of our studies showed that he was in
the one percentile. Diggs was in the one-percent chance of falling to us there.
One.”

But he did. And now he’s a Dallas Cowboy.

I’m
sure other teams drafted players they did not expect to be available to them as
well. And that’s my point: the finest minds in professional football are seldom
right when they seek to predict the draft. Or anything else about the future of
their game.

When
last year’s season began, the New England Patriots were favored to win the
Super Bowl. Now their quarterback is playing in Tampa Bay. Seventeen teams were
favored ahead of the San Francisco 49ers, who went to the Super Bowl as well.

Lao Tzu
was right: “Those who have knowledge, don’t predict. Those who predict,
don’t have knowledge.”

Listening to God before we speak

Even
biblical heroes were not always right. Remember Peter’s prediction that he
would never fail his Lord…

Five Trends of Church Closures Since the Pandemic Began

By Thom S. Rainer

“You were too late.”

Those were the words I heard from a conference attendee where I was speaking. It took me a few minutes to understand his meaning, but I finally got it. He was referring to my book, Autopsy of a Deceased Church. But his church had already shut its doors. Any help from the book was too late for that congregation.

Church closures were not the topic of church leaders until recent years. Now, more leaders are facing the reality that no congregation is immune from decline and possible death.

I have been watching church closure trends as carefully as possible for the past several years. I use the phrase “as possible” because precise data is impossible to obtain. We simply don’t have detailed information on how many churches close in North America each year. The estimates range from 5,000 to 10,000.

But we are able to discern some trends taking place in light of COVID-19. With churches unable to have in-person services, and with possible financial challenges, many churches are more at-risk than before the pandemic. Here are five trends we are watching closely:

  1. Church leaders are more hopeful today than they were at the onset of the pandemic and suspension of in-person services. In our earliest survey of church leaders at the onset of the pandemic, 15 percent of church leaders said their churches were at serious risk of closure. In a similar poll just a few weeks later, only 3 percent had such dire pessimism.
  1. Some church closures will be delayed as…

Welcome to the office of the future: How to ‘cast all your anxiety’ on God

The Jetsons were an animated television family in the early 1960s. Their space-age home was cleaned by Rosie the robot. They talked to each other via video and smartwatches and read the news on flat-screen televisions. Drone-like flying pods delivered their children to school. Voice-activated devices talked to them.

That was then, this is now.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, interior designers are busy planning the office of the future. Here’s a vision of what office workers may come back to (whenever that is).

The doors into our office building will open automatically so we don’t have to touch them. We will tell the elevator our floor so we don’t have to touch its buttons. Elevator occupancy will be regulated to enable social distancing.

Our office will have dividers separating workspaces that are spaced further apart. Break rooms and kitchens will have fewer chairs and signs documenting the last time they were cleaned.

All of this reverses the trend following the last recession in which companies were trying to do more with less space. Many packed their employees into open office spaces, a practice known as “densification.” This will likely be reversed now with more private spaces or personal offices for employees. Sensors will detect and warn of overcrowding; employees will take turns using private offices and will work from home otherwise.

One company is developing a concept called “Six Feet Office” with visually displayed foot traffic routing to keep employees six feet apart. Higher quality air filtration systems, UV lighting to sanitize surfaces, and more ubiquitous hand-sanitizing stations are predicted. So are infrared body temperature scanners and virus and antibody testing kits for employees.

We will need more space for fewer employees

All of this, of course, assumes we will return to our offices.

According to a new MIT report, 34 percent of Americans who previously commuted to…

Fast Facts: Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Independence, Kentucky is the recipient of Revitalize Network’s 2020 Church of the Year Long Obedience Award.

Hickory Grove is 219 years old. The church’s members have endured bold changes over the last 4 years in order to be obedient to God’s calling to reach the lost in their community. Hickory Grove is surrounded by families with young kids, and most of them are unchurched. The church intentionally invested in good, safe, clean facilities for youth and children to better serve these families. They also created several brand new first impressions teams: parking greeters, door greeters, hospitality, and runners who help every person find their way on their campus.

The church reallocated missions giving to partner with local community leaders to serve their neighbors and shine the light of the gospel. They partner with their local mayor, city administrator, a local school principal, and the county school system’s team of family resource directors. As a result of their obedience, Hickory Grove is now up to 3 worship services and they baptized 72 people in 2019.

Please pray for Pastor Bill Clark as he continues to lead this church in obedience to God’s calling. Also pray for the members as they minister to and serve their community for the glory of God.
