Male and Female Pastors to Co-Lead Willow Creek Megachurch

Willow Creek Community Church has named two people to take on the role of lead pastors at the church after founder Bill Hybels steps down.

Hybels announced last week he will step down from the top post at his church in October 2018. Executive pastor Heather Larson and teaching pastor Steve Carter will become the lead pastors of the church.

With the change, Willow Creek will become one of the largest churches in America with a woman in the lead pastor position. The church will also be the only major evangelical megachurch with male-female lead pastors who aren’t married.

“When we saw this shaping up, we had to ask ourselves, ‘Can our congregation have a lead pastor that’s a woman?’” Hybels said. “And because this is a deeply held value in our church, we said, ‘No problem.’”

Willow Creek was founded in 1975 and has grown to become one of the 10 biggest megachurches in the country.

“We know that no one person can replace Bill,” Larson said in an interview on the Unseminary podcast last year. “That has led Willow to talk about moving to more of a team approach in leading the church in the future and what that might look like.”

According to Barna’s 2017 State of Pastors report, the number of female pastors overall has tripled in the past 25 years to about 9 percent of all Protestant pastors in America.

The study also showed that only about a third of nondenominational churches have women in senior or preaching pastor roles.

“This is a significant move for not only Willow Creek Church, but also for the greater evangelical movement,” said Tara Beth Leach, who became the first female senior pastor at First Church of the Nazarene of Pasadena last year. “Bill Hybels and Willow Creek have made a move that no church of its size has done before, and I hope that moves like this will have a ripple effect across all of evangelicalism.”

Beatles Gone Now, Christ Is No. 1

[ad_1]

(Photo: Courtesy of Harvest America)Evangelist Greg Laurie shares the gospel at the Harvest America event at the University of Phoenix stadium in Phoenix, Arizona on June 11, 2017.

Megachurch pastor Greg Laurie looked back at a controversial statement made by British rock band The Beatles in 1966 when they suggested they are bigger than Jesus Christ, by pointing out that the band has long since disbanded now, while Christ is still the most popular figure in the world.

Laurie reminded readers on Facebook Saturday of 1966 comments by John Lennon in an interview with the Evening Standard, where the music legend said:

“Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue with that; I’m right and I will be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now: I don’t know which will go first — rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity.”

Lennon’s comments stirred outrage when they were picked up in the U.S., with promoters on the verge of canceling concert dates due to the controversy that ensued.

In a later interview, Lennon tried to add context to his initial statement, by suggesting that it was not a good thing that people were becoming more interested in other things than Jesus.

“I’m not saying that we’re better or greater or comparing us with Jesus, as a person, or God as a thing, or whatever it is. I just said what I said and it was wrong, and now there’s all this,” he said, adding that he’s not “anti-God, anti-Christ, or anti-religion.”

As Catholic Herald pointed out in a 2010 article, members of The Beatles held various religious beliefs, and several of their songs used Christian imagery and motifs.

Laurie, whose comments were also published in his weekly column at World Net Daily, pointed out that the Beatles have long since broken up, however, while Jesus is now “more popular than ever.”

“Jesus was popular in the first century as well, especially after he raised Lazarus from the dead. The name of Jesus was on everyone’s lips. Wherever he went, crowds of people thronged him,” the Harvest Christian Fellowship pastor wrote.

“Matthew 12 says that large crowds gathered to him, so he got into a boat and sat down because the crowd was standing on the beach. In effect, he needed a floating pulpit to get a little distance from the crowd. We read in Luke 12 that so many thousands of people gathered to hear Jesus that they were stepping on each other.”

The evangelist noted that Americans are living in a time in which “a lot of monuments are being torn down.”

“But this is one monument that never will be torn down. It’s memorialized in time by Jesus himself. Jesus said that wherever the gospel is preached, the story of what this woman did would be told. This was a big deal to Jesus, and therefore it should be a big deal to us,” he added.

Laurie most recently teamed up with Christian filmmakers the Erwin Brothers to release the story of American icon Steve McQueen and his journey to Christian faith on the big screen.

“In a significant turn toward the end of his life, ironically, just before he found out that he had cancer and while still the top movie star on earth, Steve did something that showed me that he really was ‘the coolest of them all.’ He put his faith in God and became a believer in Jesus Christ,” Laurie told The Christian Post about McQueen.

Pope Francis calls for ‘change in lifestyle’ in speech to mark World Food Day

[ad_1]

Francis drew a standing ovation on Monday at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, where he marked the UN’s World Food Day by calling for governments to work together to tackle the interconnected problems of hunger, global warming and migration.

He cited the Paris climate accord, in which governments committed to capping heat-trapping emissions, as an example of taking action to fight global warming based on scientific evidence.

But in what appeared to be a dig at the United States, which has announced it is withdrawing from the accord, Francis lamented that “unfortunately some are distancing themselves from it”.

Francis said negligence and greed over the world’s limited resources are harming the planet and its most vulnerable people, forcing many to abandon their homes in search of work and food.

“We are called to propose a change in lifestyle and the use of resources,” Francis told the audience, which included agriculture ministers from the Group of Seven nations.

“We cannot make do by saying ‘someone else will do it’.”

Last month, the UN reported that the number of chronically hungry people in the world was rising again after a decade of declines thanks to prolonged conflicts and climate change-related floods and droughts.

While the 815 million chronically undernourished people last year is still below the 900 million registered in 2000, the UN warned the increase “is cause for great concern”.

Francis said the answer was not to reduce the world’s population but rather to better manage the planet’s abundant resources and prevent waste.

Francis called the population control argument, which the Catholic Church has long opposed, a “false solution”.

Rather, he called for a new model of international cooperation that incorporates love, fraternity and solidarity into responding to the needs of the poorest.

Francis said it was not enough to respond with pity, “because pity is limited to emergency aid”.

Love, he said, “inspires justice and is essential to bring about a just social order”.

In a tangible sign of his message, Francis’ gift to the UN food agency to commemorate his visit was a marble sculpture of Alan, the toddler who washed up on a Turkish beach in October 2015.

The sculpture, which features a wailing angel over the little boy’s corpse, symbolises the tragedy of migration, the Vatican said.

Why Chuck Pierce Prophesied in 2008 That Donald Trump Would Be President .

[ad_1]

Chuck Pierce (YouTube )

In my new book, God and Donald Trump, I document the way four modern-day prophets prophesied ahead of the election that Donald Trump would win. Right up to Election Day, however, popular opinion had it that he would lose big to Hillary Clinton. Yet, he won! The prophets were right.

As I wrote the book, I interviewed numerous people and recorded six of these interviews so I could transcribe them. I also realized I could use them as podcasts to give behind-the-scenes information about how I put the book together.

My first interview was with Chuck Pierce, who prophesied in 2008 that God would play a “trump card,” and how he began to understand that God was referring to Donald Trump. The prophetic aspect in what God is doing is not usually part of our public discourse. I believe my book makes an appeal to the reader that God is involved in the affairs of man, including the election of our president.

Chuck Pierce is not active politically, but he is active in intercession. When people attacked him for prophesying that Trump would win, he said he was merely speaking as an oracle of the Lord—which is what a true prophet is supposed to do.

Somalia Suffers Worst Terrorist Attack in its History: 276 Have been Killed

Somalia Suffers Worst Terrorist Attack in its History: 276 Have been Killed

At least 276 people have died in a deadly bomb attack on Saturday in what is being called Somalia’s worst terrorist attack in the country’s history.

BBC News reports that the massive bombing occurred in a busy part of Mogadishu, the country’s capital. No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack, although the al-Shabaab terrorist group is known for targeting the region.

Only 111 of the dead have been identified by family members. One hundred sixty-five others will be given a national mass funeral and buried by the government.

Heartbreaking stories have been emerging from Somalia in the wake of the bombing. One victim, Maryam Abdullahi, had been in medical school and was due to graduate the day after the bombing took place.

Maryam’s father had flown to Mogadishu to celebrate her graduation, but instead ended up mourning her death.

“The family is so shocked, especially our father who travelled all the way from London to attend her graduation, but instead he attended her burial,” said Maryam’s sister, Anfa’a.

Witnesses and survivors of the attack say it was unlike anything they’ve ever seen. Local resident Muhidin Ali said it was “the biggest blast I have ever witnessed, it destroyed the whole area.”

“What happened yesterday was incredible, I have never seen such a thing before, and countless people lost their lives. Corpses were burned beyond recognition,” added Mohamed Yusuf Hassan, the director of the Madina Hospital in Mogadishu.

Church dean opens home as Ophelia looms

[ad_1]

Alistair Grimason in the County Mayo village of Cong has lent neighbours and family members access to his outdoor equipment, including torches, and the use of his gas cookers.

The 60 year old – who has been without power himself since Monday morning – told Premier: “It’s what we do in the rural west; we keep an eye on each other. We know each other because it’s a very small community.

“We know where the vulnerable are and we just think it’s an important thing to do together in times that are hard [or] difficult.”

A female motorist in her 70s died on Monday when a tree fell on her vehicle as she was driving close to Aglish near Waterford.

Storm Ophelia, which is expected to buffet areas of Ireland with winds of up to 100 miles per hour, has already caused in excess of 200,000 power cuts.

Schools and colleges were forced to shut in the Republic, while flights and ferry services have also been disrupted. Around 130 flights in Dublin have been cancelled.

Referring to the emergency services, Mr Grimason added: “It’s important that we keep them in our prayers as well for their safety and for their energy levels. They’re going to be under an awful lot of pressure in order to get us back on track whenever this is all past.”

Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued amber level weather warnings for Scotland and Wales, while yellow warnings are in place for much of Wales, northern England, the West Midlands and south-west England.

Is It Worth The Upgrade?

[ad_1]

Apple official websitePromotional picture for iOS 11.

The latest installment of Apple’s mobile operating system, the iOS 11.0.3, is now live. After the first two updates introduced a myriad of problems along with updates, is it worth it for iPhone and iPad users upgrade?

Sad to say, the update follows the footsteps of iOS 11.0.1 and iOS 11.0.2 in that it only manages to fix niche problems while failing to address the bigger hiccups involving performance and battery issues.

However, for iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus users who have been suffering from poor audio and haptic feedback or iPhone 6S users who’ve had to deal with an unresponsive display because it was fixed with non-genuine parts, the update is a godsend. Other than those specific issues, however, users are better off skipping the update entirely.

Needless to say, that also goes for owners of jailbroken iPhones, iPads and iPod touch as the iOS 11.0.3 will break jailbroken phones. Non-jailbroken devices aren’t having a great time either as it’s expected that the familiar complaints about crashes, poor battery life, sluggish performance and connectivity issues will make their way to social media and of course Reddit.

In other news, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple will make a massive cancellation to its new iPhones in 2018. According to Kuo, Apple has decided to “abandon” the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and will no longer feature it in future models of the iPhone.

Instead, Apple is fully banking on its recently unveiled Face ID feature to replace the functionality. While definitely exciting, the Face ID was not well received by all Apple fans. With this new revelation, it’s very likely that some fans of the Touch ID will jump ship to Android that is if they haven’t already following the release of the iPhone X.

Between the rumored phase-out of the Touch ID and underwhelming iOS 11.0.3, it seems that Apple is still trying to find its way in the current smartphone ecosystem. Hopefully, the company gets back on track and regain its former glory in the post-Steve Jobs era.

Mormon Man Ministering to Las Vegas Victims Says God is ‘with His Children Who are Suffering’

[ad_1]

Mormon Man Ministering to Las Vegas Victims Says God is ‘with His Children Who are Suffering’

Little about Brian Scroggins’ role overseeing crisis preparedness for dozens of southern Nevada’s churches prepared him for the most deadly mass shooting in U.S. history.

Yet the morning after Stephen Paddock fired at concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, killing 58 and wounding almost 500, Scroggins’ phone rang with a question:

Would he help establish a family crisis response center, and would he be responsible for the spiritual and religious needs of the victims and their families?

For almost two weeks now, Scroggins has spent upward of 12 hours a day walking the Las Vegas Convention Center’s gray halls and cavernous rooms — a stark contrast to the flashing neon rainbow just a few blocks away. He has hugged the anxious, prayed with the distressed, cried with the mourning. He has coordinated donations of food and clothing, kept track of what victims are in which hospitals and organized the services of chaplains and grief counselors.

But if Scroggins couldn’t rely on his disaster training, he could turn to his religious experience. Scroggins, 54, is a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — or Mormons — which emphasizes preparedness for its 15 million adherents.

“I believe Heavenly Father wanted me to be here,” he said during a rare break in his duties about a week after the shooting. His voice broke and his eyes watered.

“I believe he inspired me so that when I was called, I was prepared. I believe he knew I was going to need this training.”

Scroggins was raised far from Las Vegas, in Birmingham, Ala., one of only three Mormon students at his high school. His grandparents were baptized into the LDS church in the 1920s, but it wasn’t until he went to Brigham Young University-Idaho that he attended an LDS worship service.

Like most LDS young men, he served a two-year mission, assigned to San Bernardino, Calif. — the site of another mass shooting in 2015. He got married and moved to Las Vegas in 1988, and went to work for a hotel, a newspaper, a public utility and a homebuilder. Eventually, he and his wife opened a signage business, and now he works as deputy director of Nevada’s charter school authority.

It was while he was employed by the water utility that he began working on disaster preparedness. He took Federal Emergency Management Agency classes and went on to a master’s degree in emergency management.

Along the way, he became a “welfare specialist” for his local Mormon ward, or church, and then for a number of wards. A welfare specialist is a kind of point man in charge of ensuring other Mormons are ready for hardship — the loss of a job, the onset of a natural disaster — by putting aside money and at least a three-month supply of food and water.

A welfare specialist also helps church members advance their education, their job skills and their spiritual strength, with the goal of self-reliance — helping themselves and helping others, in the language of the church.

“During His mortal ministry, the Savior walked among the poor, the sick, and the distressed, ministering to their needs and blessing them with healing and hope,” the church says in “Providing in the Lord’s Way,” a leader’s guide to welfare. “He taught His disciples to do the same. Reaching out to those in distress is a central characteristic of the disciples of Jesus Christ.”

But the guide says nothing about how to minister to those devastated by violence or terrorism, which both rent the usual festive air of the Las Vegas Strip on Oct. 1.

Still, when the call came the next morning from the city’s office of emergency management, Scroggins said he did not hesitate. He headed to the convention center and found himself swept up.

“People were here already,” he said. “I sat with them and I cried with them and I made sure they had whatever we could do to comfort them.”

Bill Tsagrinos is the bishop of Scroggins’ ward and has known him at least a decade.

“We believe we are put here to serve God by serving other people,” Tsagrinos said. “That is what Brian does, he just gives selflessly to others.”

The work has been rewarding and overwhelming. The sister of one victim was also a member of the LDS church in another state, and Scroggins prayed with her. Then he found himself with another man, whose fiancee was shot and died in his arms.

“I shed many tears on Monday and I am OK with that,” he said. “We are here for compassion and love to share the light of Christ with those who need it.”

He has coordinated chaplains, ministers and grief counselors, including those from a Buddhist relief society, a local evangelical ministry and a rabbi who arrived from Los Angeles in an RV. Volunteers who just show up are put to work, too.

“I didn’t want to deny people the ability to give what they could because that would hinder their own healing,” he said.

No one has asked him for answers he doesn’t have — why did this happen? Why their loved one? Where was God at 10:06 p.m. Oct. 1?

Scroggins has his own answer.

“Where else would he be than with his children who are suffering?” he said. “It says in Scripture that the Lord is the still, small voice. When you hold someone’s hand and you cry with them, that’s where he is.”

World Food Day prompts appeal from charities

[ad_1]

In August 2017, World Vision and WFP, were the first humanitarian agencies to begin food distributions in Kasai Centrale region. To date, they have reached over 55,000 people. They plan to scale up the response to meet the needs of over 100,000 by the end of the year.

Premier spoke to Sarah Pickwick, World Vision UK’s Senior Conflict Advisor.

Regarding hunger worldwide she said: “the numbers are incredibly high – 850 million people don’t have enough food to eat. And I think World Food Day really helps to shine a light on all the people who are going to sleep at night, especially children, who don’t have enough nutritious food.”

When asked what causes hunger she replied: “There are many different causes of why people are hungry across the globe” but regarding the Kasai province, it is “because of conflict – the violence erupted about a year ago and over 1.4 million people had to flee from their homes”.

Due to the conflict, people are finding it extremely difficult to find anythign to eat: “they’re foraging for fruit and nuts and seeds…even now that the violence has reduced and people are returning home they’re returning home to burnt homes, destroyed crops, livestock gone. They’ve eaten all they have and they don’t have money to buy more.
“The situation is often very acute in areas where there is conflict because they have to flee and they leave everything, they can’t farm their land and take care of their livestock”.

“The situation is particularly dire for those people and needs are incredibly high and there’s a really short window of time often to get that food in.”

Sarah Pickwick spoke to Premier’s Cara Bentley:

Gwyn Williams from Feed the Hungry UK spoke about World Food Day to Premier’s Alex Williams on the News Hour. He started by asking whether the situation had got worse:
