COVID-19 Prayer Videos Removed from Military Facebook Page after Group Complains

Four inspirational videos seeking to encourage troops during the COVID-19 crisis and posted on an official Facebook page by two Fort Drum, New York chaplains have been removed following a complaint by a national organization known for targeting Christian expression in the military.

Mikey Weinstein, founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), issued a press release saying the group sent a demand letter to the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division Sustainment Brigade, saying it received eight complaints about the video messages by Chaplains Maj. Scott Ingram and Capt. Amy Smith. Each chaplain recorded and posted two messages on the brigade’s official command Facebook page in March and April.

In his statement, also posted on Twitter, Weinstein thanked the “Army’s senior leadership for so expeditiously pulling those illicit proselytizing videos.”

The press release also included links to all four videos that MRFF successfully had removed from the brigade command website. In one of her videos, Smith encouraged brigade members to visit an on-site labyrinth at the Visitor Center Park, saying it was a good spiritual tool.

“It’s going to feel like you are walking in circles,” she said. “But sometimes in life, that is what you feel like.”

As Smith walks the path, she draws a spiritual parallel to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Sometimes you…

‘5 steps to make you feel more in control’: Advice from experts and God’s first commission to the first man

Couple making a bed together.

This Washington Post headline caught my eye: “Quarantine reset: 5 steps to make you feel more in control.” This sounded like good news, since we are all feeling a loss of control in the face of this pandemic.

No one is sure when therapies for COVID-19 will be
developed, much less a vaccine. No one is sure how restarting the economy will
go, or if there will be a spike in infections when we do, or if the virus will
be seasonal, or what “normal” will look like on the other side of the
outbreak.

I opened the article expecting to find sophisticated advice
that would help with all of this. Here is what I learned:

  • Take a shower, standing under cold water for at
    least a few seconds.
  • Change your clothes, dressing as if for a normal
    day.
  • Make your bed.
  • Spend ten minutes cleaning the house.
  • Get some fresh air.

You’re probably thinking you could have written that. It
doesn’t take an expert to know that making your bed is a good idea.

Actually, the article is based on advice from
experts. For instance, the suggestion that you make your bed at the start of
the day comes from a therapist who says, “While we are under quarantine
and so much of our lives are out of our control, it’s important to feel in
control of your immediate environment. Keeping both yourself and your home
environment clean and tidy will significantly improve your sense of calm.”

The cold shower suggestion comes from a 2016 report that
people who took such showers experienced “an increase in perceived energy
levels (including many reported comparisons to the effect of caffeine).”
Five studies of undergraduates found that more formal clothing helps with
cognition and in particular with abstract processing.

A psychological study showed that people with cluttered homes are more likely to feel stressed and fatigued. And regarding fresh air, the American Heart Association reports that “nature presents scenes that gently capture your…

Former Oxford Professor Arrested for Allegedly Stealing, Selling Ancient Biblical Artifacts

Former Oxford Professor Arrested for Allegedly Stealing, Selling Ancient Biblical Artifacts

Police have arrested a professor at Christ Church Oxford for allegedly stealing and selling some 120 ancient pieces of papyrus, including a piece of the Gospel of Mark.

According to Christianity Today, Dirk Obbink, professor of papyrology and Greek literature at Christ Church Oxford, is suspected of stealing the papyrus fragments from the Egypt Exploration Society’s collection at Oxford’s Sackler Library.

The collection houses some 500,000 artifacts from the ancient city of Oxyrhynchus.

Obbink has denied that he stole the ancient documents, claiming that the evidence was “fabricated in a malicious attempt to harm my reputation and career.”

Obbink first came to Oxford in the late 1990s and served as director of a project to digitize ancient pieces of papyrus. Obbink was one of three editors overseeing the publishing of the collection. In 2001, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for his work in rescuing and interpreting the papers.

In 2011, Obbink claimed that he found a fragment of Mark’s Gospel among the collection. He said the manuscript dated to the late first century and referred to Jesus’ baptism where John the Baptist says, “I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Obbink says the book may have been copied within 30 years of the original bible manuscript, making it a rare discovery.

Scholars and experts have since…

Danish Bible Translation under Fire for Omitting Dozens of References to Israel

Danish Bible Translation under Fire for Omitting Dozens of References to Israel

Several groups have expressed dismay after a new Danish translation of the Bible omitted dozens references to Israel. The new translation, called Bible 2020, was published by the Danish Bible Society.

According to CBN News, Jan Frost, a “Bible enthusiast and supporter of Israel” from Denmark, pointed out that “Israel” was replaced by another word in 59 out of the 60 references in the New Testament. For example, it refers to “the land of Israel” as “the land of the Jews” and the “People of Israel” as “the Jews.” In addition, in Psalm 121 it translates “He who watches over Israel” to “He who watches over us,” the Jerusalem Post reports.

Frost insists that the translation is driven by Replacement Theology. This doctrine holds that the New Testament “supersedes the Old Testament” and that God’s covenant with Israel was replaced by God’s covenant with the church.

The Danish Bible Society defended the translation, arguing that they prepared the translation with an eye towards people who have no knowledge of Christianity and are likely to understand “Israel” as references to the modern geopolitical state. They said that, “Bible 2020 is a Bible that can be read and understood even by people who do not have a thorough knowledge of biblical language and Christianity. It is a Bible translation designed to convey meaning in plain good and…

Four Christians Killed in Kaduna State, Nigeria, Sources Say

Four Christians Killed in Kaduna State, Nigeria, Sources Say

JOS, Nigeria, April 22, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Muslim Fulani herdsmen killed four Christians in Kaduna state on Sunday (April 19), a day after an Anglican priest was kidnapped in southern Nigeria, sources said.

Herdsmen attacked Angwan Magaji Kamaru village, near Kamaru in Kauru County, shortly after 6:30 p.m. for two and a half hours without resistance from police or other security personnel, survivor John Asaragi said in a text message.

He identified those killed as Hannatu Joseph, 70, a member of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA); Sunday David, 45, a member of the ECWA; Sarah Sunday 40, a Catholic; and Jummai Sajeh, 75, a Catholic.

“Thirty-eight houses with 86 rooms were also razed down, while about 87 families are affected,” Asaragi told Morning Star News.

Luka Binniyat, spokesman for the Southern Kaduna People’s Union, confirmed the attack and fatalities in a press statement, transliterating the village alternatively as Unguwan Magaji, Kamaru Chawai ward, Kauru Local Government Area (LGA), in southern Kaduna state.

“The invaders who came by at 6:45 p.m. from behind the hills that serve as the boundary of Kaduna state and Ganawuri, Plateau state, numbered over a 100,” Binniyat said. “They attacked from four flanks, causing confusion and pandemonium among unsuspecting villagers as village youths tried to fend them off.”

Four people were killed, Binniyat said,…

A most unusual television reporter: Giving our ‘utmost’ to God’s ‘highest’

Stock photo

Felipe Verduzco reported the news recently on Zoom. There was no teleprompter available, so he used cue cards. Even though many reporters are working from home in more casual attire, he wore a full suit while on camera.

Here’s what makes his time on camera especially newsworthy: Felipe is in first grade and reported the news to his fellow classmates

His newscast began: “Good morning, this is Felipe reporting for NBC 5. The coronavirus is going around. Here’s some things you can do to not get sick.”

His mother, a former TV producer, says that “before he even started walking, he would stand in front of the TV watching Samantha Davies doing the weather. And every time he would hear her voice, he would literally stand in front of the TV watching Samantha.”

Now Felipe’s class is watching him.

A devotional I’ve ready daily for 27 years

You don’t need me to convince you that these are difficult days for everyone. In the midst of a pandemic unprecedented in our lifetime, one of our most common fears is that all we can do is not all that needs to be done. We feel powerless and wonder if our best is good enough.

Here’s the good news: as we work, God works. What can we do that positions us to partner with him most effectively?

Oswald Chambers lived one of the most extraordinary Christian lives of the twentieth century. A native of Scotland, his ministry of preaching and teaching took him to the United States and Japan. He founded a Bible Training College in London, then served as chaplain to British troops in Egypt during World War I.

His death at age forty-three was a tragedy to the troops he served and the family he loved. But his ministry has touched millions of souls he had no opportunity to know, myself included.

Oswald’s wife, Biddy, made his life motto the title of the devotional book she…

U.K. Council Axes X-Rated Sex Ed Program for Kids after Parents, Christian Activists Push Back

U.K. Council Axes X-Rated Sex Ed Program for Kids after Parents, Christian Activists Push Back

One controversial sex-ed program was dropped by a county council in England after parents and Christian activists protested against its sexually explicit content.

According Birmingham Live, parents said that Warwickshire County Council offered content to children “encouraging masturbation,” contained an unhealthy view of porn, and promoting “experimental transgender ideas in schools.”

One anonymous mother from Leamington Spa told Birmingham Live that she was “horrified” when she saw the online content after the council’s plans were made public on a website called Respect Yourself.

“At first I thought it looked fine. Then I started to read it and some of it is really quite disturbing,” she said. “I thought ‘is this what the council is telling my kids, that porn is fine and there’s no such thing as porn addiction?”

Additionally, The Christian Institute said the program materials “made no reference to marriage, contrary to national requirements.”

Children would also be taught on multiple genders and encouraged schools to allow students to enter bathrooms designated for the opposite sex.

“It also encouraged schools not to inform parents if their children would be sharing overnight accommodation with pupils of the opposite sex while on residential trips, and to conceal a child’s transgender status from their own parents — contrary to parental rights…

The Lyrid meteor shower is peaking: A reflection on the staggering omnipotence and intimate love of our Father

The Milky Way and Lyrid meteors falling through the sky at the Bathing House near Howick, Northumberland, as the Lyrid meteor shower reached its peak on Wednesday April 22, 2020.

The Lyrid meteor shower has been observed on our planet for
more than 2,600 years. It gets its name from the fact that it seems from our
perspective to originate from the constellation Lyra.

The Lyrids are pieces left behind by the comet C/1861 G. Each year, our planet passes through a cloud of debris left from an earlier visit by this comet. These particles collide with our upper atmosphere at a speed of about twenty-seven miles per second.

The Lyrids peak in mid-April and can cause nearly one hundred meteors to be visible per hour. While this year’s peak was in the predawn hours this morning, there will be a new moon tonight, which will give us another excellent chance to witness nature’s light show in the sky.

The grandeur of the universe is a constant reminder of the
grandeur of its Creator.

If you could travel at the speed of light (186,232 miles per
second), you could circle our planet 7.5 times in one second. You could travel
to the moon and back in 2.51 seconds.

But a new study estimates that it would take you 200,000
years to cross the Milky Way. And it would take you 93 billion years to cross
the observable universe.

How large is all of that to God? He “measured the sky
between his thumb and little finger” (Isaiah 40:12 MSG).

President Theodore Roosevelt and his good friend, the
naturalist William Beebe, would occasionally stay at Roosevelt’s family home.
They would walk out onto its lawn at night. They would search the skies until
they found the faint spot of light behind the lower left-hand corner of the
Great Square of Pegasus. Then they would remember together the words:

            That is
the Spiral Galaxy in Andromeda.

            It is as
large as our Milky Way.

            It is
one…

Church Giving Down More due to COVID-19 Than During Recession, Survey Shows

Church Giving Down More due to COVID-19 Than During Recession, Survey Shows

(RNS) — Sixty-five percent of churches have seen a decline in giving since mid-March as congregations have halted in-person services due to the coronavirus, according to a new survey.

The “State of the Plate” survey released Wednesday (April 22) by the National Association of Evangelicals found that a third of churches — 34 percent — reported that giving had dropped between 10 percent and 20 percent. About 1 in 5 churches (22 percent) said the decline was between 30 percent and 50 percent. Almost a tenth of churches (9 percent) reported a drop of 75 percent or more in giving to their congregations.

Just 8 percent of churches said giving had increased, and 27 percent reported steady offerings.

The survey conducted between April 8 and April 20 of 1,091 mostly Protestant churches in the U.S. asked church leaders how COVID-19 shutdowns affected their church’s giving. The research involved participants such as Christianity Today’s Church Law & Tax and the NAE Financial Health initiative.

Brian Kluth, who started the State of the Plate research after the 2008 financial crisis, predicted that the findings could lead to tighter budgets for congregations and their staff members.

“What’s surprising is they’re much deeper and far-reaching than what happened in the recession,” he said in an interview, referring to the Great Recession in the late 2000s. “This is a major…

Lysol factory worker is ‘on the front lines now’: Evolution’s ‘most persistent problem’ and the privilege of knowing a personal God

Gabe Scuderi has been working for twenty-four years at a Lysol factory in New Jersey but says, “It’s the first time I felt this isn’t only a job. We’re on the front lines now.”

A grandmother named Estelle Slon is emailing riddles to sick children forced into isolation as they undergo treatment for cancer and other dire illnesses. More than a thousand volunteer groups have been set up in the UK to help the most vulnerable during the coronavirus outbreak.

How are we to account for altruism?

Writing for the Federalist, Glenn T. Stanton notes the “extravagant beauty” in nature that defies evolutionary explanation. His article describes in detail the contradictory ways Charles Darwin and other evolutionists have tried to explain beauty that does not seem to serve any evolutionary purpose.

Yale University’s Richard Prum’s theory is “captured in his simple phrase ‘beauty happens.’” The bottom line is that naturalistic evolutionists have no compelling explanation for what Stanton calls their “most persistent problem.”

An example of what Stanton calls “extravagant beauty” that defies evolutionary explanation.

The same can be said of humans who perform deeds of sacrificial altruism. If evolutionary theory is right in claiming that survival optimization is our basic drive, then why is this person taking such risks? If survival of the species is the explanation, then why isn’t everyone doing the same?

Here’s the biblical response: when we care for others simply because we care for them, we express a vestige of the divine image in which we are created.

God loves us because “God is love” (1 John 4:8). He loves us because it is his very nature to love, not because we have done or can do anything to deserve his love. When we love through service that is not earned and comes at great personal cost, we act as creatures who reflect the nature of our Creator.

What does this fact say about our…
