Today, Thom and Kevin pick up with part two in a great discussion for churches as they reimagine themselves after the Coronavirus. Upon re-entry, churches will be able to redefine what is new. Many churches have been challenged to reach demographic groups which do not hold to a belief in Christ. New research from PEW Research Center provides the Church with helpful religious typology in order to learn how to reach your community more effectively for the Kingdom.

Part 2:

Most U.S. adults identify with a particular religious denomination or group. They describe themselves as Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Jewish, Mormon or Muslim– to name just a few of the hundreds of identities or affiliations that people give in surveys. Others describe themselves as atheist, agnostic or say they have no particular religious affiliation. These are the conventional categories into which Americans sort themselves. But a new Pew Research Center analysis looks at beliefs and behaviors that cut across many denominations – important traits that unite people of different faiths, or that divide people who have the same religious affiliation – producing a new and revealing classification, or typology, of religion in America.

The new typology sorts Americans into seven groups based on the religious and spiritual beliefs they share, how actively they practice their faith, the value they place on their religion, and the other…

Zondervan Releases Quran Translation to Help Christians Reach Muslims

Zondervan Releases Quran Translation to Help Christians Reach Muslims

Zondervan recently unveiled a new study to help Christians reach Muslims with the good news of Jesus Christ.

The Quran with Christian Commentary: A Guide to Understanding Islam, authored by Gordon D. Nickel contains a new English translation of the Quran and contains Christian commentary to help believers understand what Muslims believe and how to reach them with the Christian message, CBN News reports.

In their announcement of the project, Zondervan said in a statement that, “Nickel provides in-text notes to explain the meaning of various surahs (chapters and ayat (verses), their interpretive history and significance in Muslim thought, and similarities and differences when compared to biblical passages.” They also said their goal for the study was to equip “Christians to interact more fruitfully with Muslim believers.”

The author and translator, Gordon Nickel, serves as the director for the Centre for Islamic Studies at South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies in Bangalore, India. He told The Christian Post that in the book, he wanted “to comment on all passages related to Jesus and the Gospel. The Apostle Paul wrote certain penetrating words about “a different gospel.’ Christians are the custodians of the good news of salvation through the death of Jesus on the cross, the ‘People of the Gospel’ as the Quran describes them. As such they have a stake in the…

Under Fire from Many, Samaritan’s Purse Finds an Unlikely Champion

Under Fire from Many, Samaritan’s Purse Finds an Unlikely Champion

(RNS) — Whitney Tilson and his wife, Susan, were out walking their dog early one Sunday morning when they noticed workers unloading trucks and stacks of blue tarps in the East Meadow of Central Park, right outside their Fifth Avenue apartment building.

Later that afternoon, Tilson saw some white tents rising up out of the ground bearing a name he had never heard of: Samaritan’s Purse.

After learning the group was setting up a series of tents for a 68-bed field hospital to treat overflow coronavirus patients from Mount Sinai Hospital, Tilson agreed to lend a hand.

He hasn’t stopped since.

In the course of the past four weeks, Tilson, who is not religious and had never heard of Franklin Graham, the conservative Christian leader of Samaritan’s Purse, has become one of the field hospital’s most dedicated volunteers and champions.

He’s befriended many of the staff, donated shovels and sleds to help spread 2 tons of mulch across the muddy lawn in between the tents, and gifted thousands of dollars worth of bananas, apples, Starbucks Frappuccinos, soda, potato chips and other snacks to those looking after the sick.

“It’s an incredibly impressive organization,” said Tilson, 53, a retired hedge fund manager who writes an investment newsletter. “I have no doubt they are delivering world-class critical care to my fellow New Yorkers stricken with COVID-19. Every single person I’ve…

Thousands Join Christian Streaming Service during COVID-19 Crisis

Thousands Join Christian Streaming Service during COVID-19 Crisis

Only one month after offering a trial to families sheltered-in-place, faith-based streaming service RightNow Media reports more than 10,000 people worldwide have signed up.

Public officials have been talking a lot lately about “a light at the end of the tunnel.” For many families sheltered-in-place at home, streaming media has helped make this season bearable.

One month ago, streaming service RightNow Media took the unprecedented step of offering a free trial with hundreds of hours of Christian teaching and faith-driven kids content.

“In times like these, when the church is forced to operate in new ways, we want to be there to help,” said Brian Mosley, president of RightNow Media based in McKinney, Texas.

Founded in 1977, the ministry uniquely markets its streaming service to churches — who then offer their members free access. Over 10,000 new trial subscribers joined this past month, along with 153,000 individuals who activated accounts through their churches that subscribe.

In a phone interview, Mosley reveals why they decided to open up their library for free. He also shares the challenges of reaching diverse evangelical believers and responds to critics who say streaming video leads people away from the church.

Global Mission, Local Churches

Why did you decide to offer this free trial?

Brian Mosley: Our mission has always been to serve the church. Since many people are now…

Panel of Experts Offer Hope to the Black Community amid High Coronavirus Mortality Rates

Panel of Experts Offer Hope to the Black Community amid High Coronavirus Mortality Rates

Although numbers are still being tallied, one thing is clear, in states like New York, Louisiana, and Illinois, among others, the black community has suffered significantly in the wake of COVID-19.

Christian Headlines recently assembled a group of Black Community experts to discuss the matter.

Sitting together in a room at least six feet apart from each other, BJ Thompson from BuildABetterUs.com, Pastor Emory Berry of Greenforest Community Baptist Church, Neonatal doctor at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Dr. George Buggs and Terrence Albritton, a financial advisor, came together to speak about the effects the coronavirus is having on the black community through the lens of their shared faith in Jesus.

Many people may know how the virus came to America, but for some, it may be surprising to see how African Americans are being affected disproportionately.

“We knew from watching the cases in China and Italy that pre-existing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, lung diseases, and smoking cigarettes makes the mortality rate much higher and unfortunately the black community struggles with some of these issues to a larger degree,” Dr. Buggs shared.

While all of the men in the room understood what Dr. Buggs was saying, they also agreed that it doesn’t have to be this way.

“In a lot of ways, [the higher mortality rates among the black community] is something that…

4 in 5 Parents Say Lockdown Has Brought Their Family Closer Together, British Poll Finds

4 in 5 Parents Say Lockdown Has Brought Their Family Closer Together, British Poll Finds

The lockdown sparked by the coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on the economy, but it has helped bring British families closer together, according to a new survey.

The poll of 2,000 British parents conducted by MumPoll found four in five parents saying their families have formed an even stronger bond since the lockdown began. Likewise, 60 percent of parents say they are happier with their partner compared to the time before the quarantine. The research website Study Finds reported on the poll.

“Being forced to halt our busy lives and spend time together in quarantine has made many of us consider what’s really important, like children, parents and the community they are part of,” said Siobhan Freegard, founder of ChannelMum.com, which commissioned the research.

“Despite the dreadful toll the pandemic is taking, people are becoming more thankful for the small pleasures in life. Coronavirus may well see us emerge a kinder community and more thankful for the things we enjoy in life.”

The survey also found, according to Study Finds:

– Half of families “are getting together to play board games and make puzzles.”

– 30 percent of parents say their families have formed book clubs and read together.

– 28 percent say their families have, for the first time, started gardening.

– 62 percent say their children are more “community-minded” than…

The House of Commons will meet via Zoom: Making changes to preserve what must not change

Leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg speaks in the House of Commons, London, as MPs gathered on Tuesday April 21, 2020.

One of my favorite places to visit in London is the House of
Commons, part of the 700-year-old British Parliament. Here members in green
leather benches debate in a raucous fashion that is both remarkable for its
tradition and inspiring for its passion.

Parliament was last shut down due to plague in 1349. But
what was old is new.

When the House of Common reopened its doors Tuesday, the
gold ceremonial mace was in place. The speaker was in his canopied chair. But
screens dotting the room were prepared to link up to 120 lawmakers via Zoom.

According to tradition, the original debating chamber was
designed with a social distancing of sorts—the opposing benches were two
swords’ lengths apart to avoid lawmakers dueling. That design was preserved
when the building was rebuilt after World War II.

Now the members will have to duel virtually.

“I am not sure how we are going to make those
impassioned speeches into a television screen,” said one lawmaker. They
won’t be able to chant “hear, hear” in agreement with others. Alcohol
will not be served in Parliament’s numerous bars and restaurants, which seems
to be the first time that has happened since 1653.

Lawmakers are nonetheless expected to dress in suits or formal wear when appearing on Zoom. “It is really important that old democracies like ours continue to set an example,” as one explained.

Making changes to preserve what must not change

The coronavirus pandemic has forced changes everywhere we
look.

I’ve been working from home for weeks now. I’ll be teaching
a Bible study later today via Zoom, talking over PowerPoint slides that I hope
those in the study are able to follow on their devices. I was on a conference
call yesterday with leaders of the healthcare system I serve as an ethicist,
listening as they discussed innovations…

40 Days for Life President: ‘I Believe We’re Beginning to See the End of Abortion’

40 Days for Life President: ‘I Believe We’re Beginning to See the End of Abortion’

The president of 40 Days for Life says he believes the world is “beginning to see the end of abortion.”

Shawn Carney, president of the pro-life group 40 Days for Life, told The Christian Post in an interview that he is seeing many young adults choosing to support the pro-choice effort.

A 2019 Students for Life of America’s Institute for Pro-Life Advancement poll showed that 93 percent of millennial-aged Americans do not support the Democratic platform of pro-choice on abortion.

“There’s a mass exodus out of the abortion industry,” Shawn Carney, president of 40 Days for Life, told The Christian Post. “Thanks to new technology and science teaching us that life begins at conception, I believe there is growing discomfort with abortion, regardless of how common it is.”

Another 2017 study from Quinnipiac found that among age groups, 18 to 34-year-olds were more likely to support banning abortions after 20-weeks gestation.

“The pro-life movement has gotten younger and larger, and I believe we’re beginning to see the end of abortion,” Carney said. “The response to the pro-life movement has been overwhelmingly positive, whereas it was overwhelmingly negative 20 years ago.”

He said, however, there is still work to be done.

“We have to acknowledge that we are in a crisis,” he said. “We’ve lost over 60 million children to abortion. Three thousand children…

Louisville Drops Ban, Allows Church to Hold Drive-In Services

Louisville Drops Ban, Allows Church to Hold Drive-In Services

A Louisville church on Tuesday reached an agreement with the mayor allowing it to hold drive-in-services, less than two weeks after the mayor banned such services and a federal judge overturned the mayor’s order.

The agreement allows On Fire Christian Church to hold drive-in services in their parking lot consistent with CDC guidelines. Cars must be parked at least six feet apart and attendees must remain in their cars. Additionally, windows can be no more than half-way open.

“We are grateful to Mayor Fischer and Louisville city officials who worked with us to ensure their policies are both consistent with the Constitution and the CDC’s guidelines,” said Roger Byron, senior counsel for First Liberty Institute, which was one of three legal organizations to represent the church. The others were WilmerHale and Swansburg & Smith.

“During this challenging time, we need to see more of this kind of cooperation between government officials and the religious community,” Byron added.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer thanked the church “for their recognition of the need for social distancing as we battle this deadly pandemic,” the Louisville Courier-Journal reported.

“My goal all along has been to protect the citizens of Louisville Metro from this dreadful COVID-19 virus, and I believe this Agreed Order accomplishes that goal,” Fischer said.

On April 11 – the Saturday prior to Easter –…

The ‘three blessings exercise’: The path to gratitude that changes our lives and culture

Have you heard of the “three blessings” exercise?

Yale psychology professor Laurie Santos teaches an online course on happiness that has reached more than a million people. She recommends something called the “three blessings exercise.”

Here’s her explanation: “Research shows that we really can benefit from counting our blessings even when it feels like there aren’t that many blessings to be counted. The simple act of scribbling down three things you’re grateful for can significantly bump your mood, in some studies as quickly as within a couple of weeks. It’s completely free. It takes five to ten minutes a day. At the end of your day, just scribble down a few things that you’re grateful for right now.”

Dr. Santos was asked for “final words of wisdom” and shared this: “If I had a last word to share, it would be self-compassion. It really is an awful time. There’s a reason we’re calling this crisis unprecedented. We’re dealing with a deadly virus that’s incredibly scary and uncertain. . . . Give yourself and your family members more self-compassion and more of a benefit of the doubt than you usually would.”

“Give thanks in all circumstances”

Counting our blessings even in hard times is a biblical exercise: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). No matter how the world changes, God’s love does not: “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” (Psalm 106:1).

However, there’s a way to experience our Father’s presence that transcends an occasional attitude of gratitude. The psalmist continues: “Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord, or declare all his praise?” (v. 2). Then he answers his question: “Blessed are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times!” (v. 3, my emphasis).

Psalm 111:1 makes the same point differently:…
