53 Percent of Pastors Say Global Warming Is ‘Real and Man-Made,’ Poll Finds

A majority of Protestant pastors say they believe global warming is real and man-made, although such sentiments aren’t held by evangelical pastors, according to a new LifeWay Research survey.

A total of 53 percent of Protestant pastors said they agreed with the statement “I believe global warming is real and man-made,” including 34 percent who strongly agreed and 19 percent who somewhat agreed. Thirty-eight percent disagreed (24 percent “strongly” and 14 percent “somewhat”), while 10 percent weren’t sure.

The poll’s findings are a major change from a similar LifeWay Research survey in 2010, when only 36 percent of Protestant pastors agreed with the statement and 60 percent disagreed.

“Fewer pastors are rejecting global warming and climate change out of hand,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research. “Yet pastors are still split on the subject, likely following along with political divides.”

Mainline pastors (71 percent) were more likely than evangelical pastors (39 percent) to believe global warming is real and man-made.

Among other findings:

  • Methodist pastors (80 percent) were the most likely to agree with the statement, followed by Presbyterian/Reformed pastors (67 percent), Lutherans (63 percent), Christian/Church of Christ (43 percent), Baptists (37 percent) and Pentecostals (32 percent).
  • Seventy-eight percent of African American…

Christian Organizations Speak Out against Trump’s Temporary Immigration Ban

Christian Organizations Speak Out against Trump’s Temporary Immigration Ban

President Trump’s temporary 60-day immigration ban has raised concerns from Christian activist and faith-based organizations.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, on Monday, President Trump announced a plan to sign a temporary ban on immigration to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” the president tweeted.

One top DHS official noted that the order is in response to “22 million unemployed Americans and counting due to COVID-19.”

The new ban, however, has been polarizing to many, including several Christian organizations.

Jenny Yang, vice president of advocacy & policy for the refugee resettlement organization World Relief, said in a statement emailed to The Christian Post that they were “very concerned by the idea of shutting down all legal immigration, particularly now, as the nation is slowly coming out of the COVID-19 shutdown.”

“Immigrants already undergo careful health screenings before being allowed into the U.S. and given that the virus is already spreading widely within the U.S., further restrictions on immigration do nothing to improve the public health situation,” Yang said.

“Instead, they lead to family separation and slamming the door…

Why Rob Gronkowski is reuniting with Tom Brady: Two ways to redeem the pandemic

Rob Gronkowski films a segement for Fox Sports before Super Bowl LIV between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs held at Hard Rock Stadium on Feb. 2, 2020.

Rob Gronkowski made headlines this week with the announcement that he is reuniting with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay.

The tight end, often considered the best in history at his position, retired a year ago from the New England Patriots. He explains that his body was in great need of a year off to rest and recover. And he seems to be excited about playing away from the dictatorial accountability for which Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is famous.

Gronkowski did not need a pandemic to force him to take time
off. But his story reminds us that finding ways to rest and recover in a fallen
world is valuable for more people than professional football players.

Many forced to stay home are using the time to watch
television, a fact demonstrated by Netflix’s announcement that it added 15.8
million subscribers in the first quarter of the year. Others are finding
innovative ways to do what they do best, as shown by John Krasinski’s hit
YouTube series, Some Good News.

Two ways to redeem the pandemic

Christians can learn from both strategies.

We were made to need rhythms of work and rest, as our Lord
showed us when he instituted the Sabbath. (It is interesting that this
commandment receives more words of explanation than any of the other Ten
Commandments; cf. Exodus 20:8–11). Jesus told his disciples during a busy season
of ministry, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a
while” (Mark 6:31).

To use social distancing for spiritual growth, we need a
strategy: a regular appointment with God and a plan to read his word, pray,
worship, and practice other spiritual disciplines. Our Father will lead you
into greater communion with him if you will follow.

And we should be finding ways to minister during the
pandemic that we could not before it began. This…

Gunmen Shoot, Wound Daughter of Pastor Slain in 2015 in Eastern India

Gunmen Shoot, Wound Daughter of Pastor Slain in 2015 in Eastern India

HYDERABAD, India, April 21, 2020 (Morning Star News) – A gunman at the door of a Christian family’s home in eastern India on Thursday (April 16) shot the daughter of a pastor who was killed in the same house five years ago, family members said.

Neelam Purty, 25, sustained bullet wounds in her thumb and thigh in the shooting she survived in Sandih village, near Binda village in Murhu Block, Jharkhand state, they said.

“Is this the house of the pastor who was killed?” one of two men asked family members at the door at about 8 p.m., according to Purty’s sister, Sharon Purty.

She said the men were trying to speak in the local Mundari dialect, but that it was clearly not their native language. They resorted to speaking Hindi, she said.

“That pastor was killed, but you did not learn a lesson,” the men said as they shouted at family members at the door, according to Sharon Purty, who said they added, “You have continued assembling in large numbers for Christian prayers. Where is the woman working as spy?”

The sisters’ mother told them that they were not spies and asked them to leave, Sharon Purty said.

“‘Call the woman out, or we will kill you,’ they threatened us,” she said.

One of the men, masked in black cloth, handed a pistol to the one standing behind him and told him to load it, Sharon Purty said. At that point she, her mother and younger brother were near the…

Robots may clean your next cruise ship: A 2,700-year-old warning we need to hear today

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Reservations for cruises next year are up 40 percent from 2019. If you book one, expect to experience more stringent boarding procedures, regular temperature checks, expanded onboard medical centers, improved air filtration systems, and crew-manned serving stations.

And don’t be surprised if a robot cleans your room. Sterilization robots already in use in hotels could be on your next ship.

We’re looking for help with COVID-19 in every direction, from the Senate deal yesterday on a $484 billion aid package to the New York City mayor’s plan to throw a parade for healthcare workers and first responders when the city reopens.

But the most significant direction we can look today is up.

A powerful image of divine judgment

I am reading through the Book of Isaiah these days and came upon a chapter that speaks directly to our crisis.

The prophet foresaw a day when the people of Israel would be judged by God: “It shall be as when the reaper gathers standing grain and his arm harvests the ears, and as when one gleans the ears of grain in the Valley of Rephaim. Gleanings will be left in it, as when an olive tree is beaten” (Isaiah 17:5–6).

I have been in Israel during olive harvesting season and seen workers beating the trees to knock the olives from their branches. A few olives are always left, while most fall to the ground.

An olive branch in the Garden of Gethsemane © Denison Ministries 2019

This is a powerful picture of God’s judgment against his sinful people. But here’s the resulting good news: “In that day man will look to his Maker, and his eyes will look on the Holy One of Israel. He will not look to the altars, the work of his hands, and he will not look on what his own fingers have made” (vv. 7–8).

The people had trusted what they could make rather than the One who made them. When they got so far down they could look nowhere but up, they would turn back to the God they should have…

Your Church is Worth the Effort

By Sam Rainer

Your discouragement is understandable. A lot is happening in the world right now. Everyone is on edge. When will the pandemic pass? Perhaps your church is not doing well. Maybe you’re tired, or disheartened. Maybe you’re hurt.

Don’t give up. Your church is worth the effort.

Some churches reek of selfishness, but even the unpleasant bodies need someone to help clean out the noxiousness. If you don’t mind body odor, then you’re probably the one God is calling to scrub a few saints. Be strong.

Don’t give up. Your church is worth the effort.

Some churches fight. A lot. Hostile churches need someone to be the example. Show them how to fight for a church, not with a church. Be brave.

Don’t give up. Your church is worth the effort.

Some churches are the butt of everyone else’s jokes. They don’t have a clue, and people scoff. I don’t think Jesus has ever—or will ever—ridicule a church. Jesus has a great sense of humor. But the church is his bride. Every congregation deserves someone who will lovingly shepherd towards a greater purpose. Be resilient.

Don’t give up. Your church is worth the effort.

Some churches are immature. The body acts like a gangly middle schooler trying to impress the girls at skate night. The people go around in circles. Energies are poured into all the wrong things. If this is your church, then be the bigger spiritual person. Middle schoolers don’t mature without guidance. Churches don’t disciple properly without a mature…

Roe v. Wade Was an ‘Incorrect’ Decision, Clarence Thomas Says in New Opinion

Roe v. Wade Was an ‘Incorrect’ Decision, Clarence Thomas Says in New Opinion

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh sided with the majority Monday in a decision requiring unanimous verdicts in state criminal cases, but it was his citation of Roe v. Wade that left a few court observers wondering what he meant.

Meanwhile, Justice Clarence Thomas didn’t mince words in criticizing Roe.

The justices, in a 6-3 decision, overturned a 1972 Supreme Court case in ruling that the Sixth Amendment requires unanimous verdicts. The case involved a Louisiana man who was convicted of murder on a 10-2 verdict.

Much of the discussion among the justices focused on the legal doctrine of stare decisis, a Latin term meaning “to stand by things decided.” In essence, it’s the doctrine of precedent and is often discussed when the Supreme Court overturns a past case.

“The doctrine of stare decisis does not mean, of course, that the Court should never overrule erroneous precedents,” Kavanaugh wrote in a concurring opinion. “All Justices now on this Court agree that it is sometimes appropriate for the Court to overrule erroneous decisions. Indeed, in just the last few Terms, every current Member of this Court has voted to overrule multiple constitutional precedents.”

Kavanaugh then listed seven recent cases.

His mention of Roe v. Wade came in the next paragraph after he wrote, “Some of the Court’s most notable and consequential decisions have entailed overruling…

Harvard Professor Says Homeschooling Should Be Banned, Calls it ‘Dangerous’

Harvard Professor Says Homeschooling Should Be Banned, Calls it ‘Dangerous’

A Harvard University professor has come under fire for arguing that homeschooling should be banned, claiming that it is “dangerous” for parents to have “authoritarian control” over their children.

According to Faithwire, Elizabeth Bartholet, Wasserstein Professor of Law and faculty director of the Law School’s Child Advocacy Program was featured in a Harvard Magazine article, “The Risks of Homeschooling.”

The image atop of the article shows a child behind prison bars at home while the rest of the children are playing outside. Moreover, the sidewall of the house is in the form of books labeled “Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, and Bible.”

Regarding homeschooling, Bartholet says that children are deprived of a “meaningful education” as it prevents them from “contributing positively to a democratic society.”

She implies that parents are abusive to their children, though she failed to provide statistics.

“We have an essentially unregulated regime in the area of homeschooling,” Bartholet says, piling on the imagery of abusive homes with a “regime” that’s taking over large swaths of the country. “If you look at the legal regime governing homeschooling, there are very few requirements that parents do anything,” she added.

Therefore, Batholet believes that parents should not have complete autonomy over their children.

“The issue is, do we think that…

Chick-fil-A Donates $10.8 Million, 320,000 Free Meals for Coronavirus Relief

Chick-fil-A this week announced a $10.8 million COVID-19 relief effort with the goal of having “an immediate impact on the needs of local communities.”

The $10.8 million will be distributed to local communities through Chick-fil-A’s network of 1,800-plus independent restaurants. The goal, Chick-fil-A said, is to help local restaurants serve their communities.

“Striving to be a supportive, caring and generous neighbor is in our DNA. Our restaurant Operators give back locally in so many ways, and this time is no exception,” said Chick-fil-A Chairman and CEO Dan Cathy.

The funds will be available through June and used for efforts such as food donations to first responders, health care workers and the families of Chick-fil-A workers.

Chick-fil-A also said that:

  • More than 320,000 free meals have been served through the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program since the beginning of March. The program involves surplus food donations by restaurants.
  • More than 5,000 meals have been donated to “school systems, health care workers and others on the front lines” in Atlanta, Ga., the company’s hometown.
  • Chick-fil-A’s supply chain has donated 7,715 cases “of fresh produce to Feeding America.”

“I’m humbled by the incredible care our restaurant teams have shown – from offering free meals to health care workers to feeding school children in need to writing notes of encouragement…

Federal Judge Says Kansas Churches Can Hold Worship Services despite 10 Person Gathering Limit

Federal Judge Says Kansas Churches Can Hold Worship Services despite 10 Person Gathering Limit

A federal judge decided this week that Kansas churches may hold worship services despite an executive order prohibiting gatherings of more than 10 people.

U.S. District Court Judge John W. Broomes of the District of Kansas issued an order on Saturday approving a temporary exception to the order, The Christian Post reports.

The decision came after Pastor Stephen Ormord of First Baptist Church of Dodge City and Pastor Aaron Harris of Calvary Baptist Church of Junction City filed a complaint against the executive order.

Broomes said in his ruling that churches were “likely to prevail on” the claim that prohibiting in-person services violated their religious freedom.

“Plaintiffs have made a substantial showing that development of the current restriction on religious activities shows religious activities were specifically targeted for more onerous restrictions than comparable secular activities,” he said.

The churches are now hoping to request an injunction to the order. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

The week before Easter Sunday, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly approved an executive order issued an executive order banning gatherings of over 10 people, including religious services.

“As Holy Week gets underway — and with Kansas rapidly approaching its projected ‘peak’ infection rate in the coming weeks — the risk for a spike in COVID-19 cases…
