Christian Beaten into Coma by Tribal Animists in Odisha State, India

HYDERABAD, India, April 7, 2020 (Morning Star News) – A young mother and her two children were staring at her husband as he lay unconscious after a mob of 60 villagers in eastern India had stormed their home and beaten him with wooden sticks.

“The children and I tried to wake him up – we thought he had fainted – but there was no response,” Bhimeshwari Sodi told Morning Star News. “We cried out for help, but there was nobody to help us. The neighbors said that he was dead.”

The animist mob, worshippers of the gods of their tribal religion, beat 30-year-old Kama Sodi unconscious in Odisha state’s Kodalmetla village, Malkangiri District on the morning of March 12, she said. They had first attacked him the night before, surrounding his house as he, his wife and children were praying as they would before bed, Bhimeshwari Sodi said.

Before the attack that night, the hard-line animists had shouted at the family that they would kill them, she said.

“I was able to protect my two small children from their beatings, but my husband was in their clutches,” the 26-year-old Sodi said. “They were beating him very brutally.”

Her children are ages 3 and 6. Sodi pleaded with the assailants to stop and cried for help, but they continued beating him, vowing that they would kill him, she said.

“Even while suffering in their hands, my husband refused to give up his faith,” Sodi told…

Teaching math from a front porch: Making house calls for Christ

A middle school student in South Dakota was doing her
lessons at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. She was struggling with a
math problem, so she emailed her teacher to ask if he could help.

“You bet,” he said. Besides teaching sixth-grade
math at her school, he also happened to live directly across the street.

Next thing she knew, he was standing on her front porch with a marker and a large whiteboard. The two stayed a safe distance apart and worked on her equations together. “I thought it was pretty awesome to see my teacher making a house call to give me a private lesson,” she said later.

This math teacher in South Dakota is not the only teacher
who makes house calls.

Making house calls for Christ

Matthew 9 tells us that Jesus “saw a man called Matthew
sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he rose and
followed him” (v. 9). Note what came next: “As Jesus reclined at
table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were
reclining with Jesus and his disciples” (v. 10).

How did Matthew’s fellow “tax collectors and
sinners” know to join them at his home? He didn’t post the event on
Facebook or send a tweet. It seems to me that he simply invited them to his
home so they could experience what he had experienced. He wanted to give what
he had received.

The woman who encountered Jesus at the Samaritan well did
the same: “The woman left her jar and went away into town and said to the
people, ‘Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the
Christ?’” (John 4:29). As a result, they invited him to “stay with
them” and he did (v. 40), and “many more believed because of his
word” (v. 41).

Taking Christ home with us is his intention for us. For
example, after Jesus healed a demoniac in the country of the Gerasenes, he said
to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done
for you, and how he has had…

8 in 10 Pastors Say Current Events Are a Sign of Jesus’ Return

8 in 10 Pastors Say Current Events Are a Sign of Jesus’ Return

The overwhelming majority of pastors say specific current events are a sign of the End Times and Jesus’ return, according to a new LifeWay Research survey.

The poll of 1,000 evangelical and historically black church pastors found that 97 percent believe that Jesus will “literally and personally return to Earth again,” and 56 percent believe Jesus will return in their lifetime.

Pastors also were asked if they “consider any of the following types of current events to be the ‘birth pains’ that Jesus was referring to when he was asked by his disciples when he would return” The question referenced Jesus’ words in Matthew 24.

On each option, most pastors said they viewed it as sign of Jesus’ return:

– 83 percent, the “rise of false prophets and false teachings.”

– 81 percent, the “love of many believers growing cold.”

– 79 percent, “traditional morals becoming less accepted.”

– 78 percent, “wars and national conflicts.”

– 76 percent, “earthquakes and other natural disasters.”

– 75 percent, the “number of people abandoning their Christian faith.”

– 70 percent, famines.

– 63 percent, “anti-Semitism toward Jewish people worldwide.”

“While Christians prepare to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, many pastors believe they see signs his return may be close,” Scott McConnell, executive director LifeWay Research, said in an online analysis of the survey. “These…

267 different COVID-19 remedies being developed: The most urgent cure in the world

Last September, Gallup surveyed Americans’ views of US
businesses, ranking twenty-five different sectors from very positive to very negative.
The pharmaceutical industry came in dead last, lower than at any time since
Gallup began the poll nearly twenty years ago.

As Forbes notes, “What a difference a global
pandemic makes.”

Today, the world is depending on the pharmaceutical industry to save lives and economies around the world. The article notes that there are no fewer than 267 different COVID-19 remedies in development, then handicaps the most promising.

The world cannot imagine better news than the discovery of a
vaccine that would end the coronavirus pandemic. But as historic as this would
be, there is even better news available to us today.

The most urgent cure in the world

The fact is, COVID-19 has changed our perception of
mortality but not its reality. We are all destined to die unless the Lord
returns first. Whether we die of a disease or a disaster, we will each die. And
then we will stand before God in judgment (Hebrews 9:27).

Those who do not know Christ as their Lord face “the second death” (Revelation 20:14), an eternity separated from God. That’s why, as urgent as a vaccine for COVID-19 is, the “vaccine” for sin through salvation in Christ is even more urgent.

My wife, Janet Denison, wrote on this subject in her blog
today, noting that Passover begins tonight. Jewish people around the world will
remember the miracle of the death angel’s “passing over” their homes
in Egypt (Exodus 12).

But as Janet reminds us, the “passover” we need even more urgently today is salvation not from “the virus that is costing people their earthly lives, but the virus that is costing people their eternity.”

The enemy will use distractions of any kind to lure us away
from what matters most. They may be tragedies such as the current pandemic or
promises of a return to “normal” when it is over. They…

Is the government violating religious freedom by restricting church services? A Holy Wednesday invitation to solitude

This is the first Holy Week in Christian history to be observed primarily online.

From livestreamed services at the Vatican to video sermons recorded and shared on cell phones, Christians and Christian churches all over the world are meeting virtually these days.

This is a controversial subject. Some claim that governmental restrictions on worship services are an infringement of religious liberty and a violation of the separation of church and state. Others disagree, noting that such prohibitions do not single out religious gatherings but include all events at which people could become infected with coronavirus. Still others claim that church services should be classified as “essential” functions and allowed to continue under social distancing guidelines.

I agree with Dr. Albert Mohler and Kelly Shackelford’s statement in the Washington Post: “Asking houses of worship to briefly suspend large gatherings is neither hostile toward religion nor unreasonable in light of the threat. Rather, this is a time for all of us to exercise prudence over defiance. Love for God and neighbor demands nothing less.”

However, my purpose today is not to litigate this issue. Rather, it is to encourage us to reframe social distancing in a way that aligns with this day in Holy Week.

You might respond by noting that the Gospels do not record any activities of our Lord on the Wednesday before he died. I agree.

“God goes where he’s wanted”

Jesus spent the first four nights of Holy Week in Bethany, a suburb east of Jerusalem, at the home of his friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus (cf. Matthew 21:17).

Bethany in Jerusalem

Making the homes of others his own was customary for our Lord. He stayed with Peter and his family when in Capernaum (cf. Matthew 8:14; Mark 1:29). He once said, “the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20).

But as Philip Yancey noted, “God goes where he’s wanted.”

When…

PODCAST: Beyond the Borders of the Empire, Part 1 (History of Christianity #170 with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the History of Christianity Podcast #170, titled, “Beyond the Borders of the Empire (Part 1).”

When I became a believer in Jesus Christ, I somehow had the false idea that Christianity began when I got saved. I had no concept of the hundreds of years of history that Christianity had gone through since the time of Jesus Christ over 2,000 years ago. I have found that many believers, young and old, have the same false idea. The purpose of this broadcast is to dispel this notion by sharing with listeners the history of Christianity from the ministry of Jesus Christ all the way up until the present day in an easy-to-understand format. You don’t have to worry: this is not a lecture. This is a look at the basic facts and figures of Christian history that every believer and every person needs to be aware of.

Our Scripture for today is Acts 11:25-26 which reads: “Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.”

Our History of Christianity quote today is from Abgarus [AB-GAH-RUS], king of Edessa [ED-ES-SA] (purportedly in a letter to Jesus). He said: “Abgarus, King of Edessa, greetings to Jesus, the good Savior who has appeared in Jerusalem: I have heard of you and the many cures that you effect with no help of medicines or herbs. . . . I have also heard that the Jews conspire against you and seek to do you harm. Please know that, although small, my city is noble, and suffices for the two of us.”

Today, in the History of Christianity, we are looking at “Beyond the Borders of the Empire (Part 1)” from Dr. Justo L. Gonzalez’s fine book, The Story of Christianity (Volume 1).

Up until this point our attention has centered on the history of Christianity within the borders of the Roman Empire. There is ample reason for this, for Christianity was born within that empire, and most of today’s Christians—Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox—trace their heritage to the early development of the church within those borders. However, it is important to remember that this is not the whole story, for while Christianity was developing within the Roman Empire it was also taking root in lands beyond the reach of Roman rule. Among the Germanic “barbarians” of the north, Christianity gained a foothold long before the barbarians themselves broke into the Roman Empire. But the most impressive expansion was toward the east, and there are Christians in the twenty-first century who trace their origins to those early churches beyond the Eastern borders of the empire. In the eastern reaches of the Roman Empire, and beyond toward the east, Syriac was the language most commonly used for trade and international communication, and it provided the channel for the expansion of Christianity. This language was closely akin to the Aramaic spoken in Palestine and by Jews in the Eastern Diaspora. Long before the advent of Christianity, most Jews had ceased speaking Hebrew, and many could not even understand the reading of scripture in the synagogue. Thus, the practice arose of translating the sacred text into Aramaic, at first orally, and then in written form—in documents known as Targums [TAR-GUMS]. This practice, which paralleled the rise of Christianity, provided early Aramaic-speaking Christians with ready-made versions of at least part of the Hebrew scripture, much as the Septuagint provided Greek-speaking Christians with a similar instrument. At some point around the second century, a Syriac translation of both the Old and New Testaments appeared, and came to be known as the Peshitta [PUH-SHEE-TUH]—(peshitta [PUH-SHEE-TUH] means “simple”), which thus reminds us of Vulgate, which has a similar meaning. At least part of the Old Testament was quite possibly the work of Jewish translators, but it is clear Christians—most likely Jewish Christians—played an important role in the process of translation. Tatian [TAY-SHUN]—the disciple of Justin Martyr who has already been mentioned as one of the early apologists—had attempted to harmonize the four Gospels into a single one, taking some elements from each, and leaving out others. This edited compilation of the four Gospels was known as the Diatessaron [DY-AH-TESS-UH-ROHN]—meaning “according to the four”—and was the subject of much controversy among Syriac-speaking Christians, for some preferred it to the four canonical Gospels and others rejected it altogether—a controversy that was not quickly resolved, for the Diatessaron [DY-AH-TESS-UH-ROHN] was still read in some Syriac churches as late as the seventh century.

From a very early date, Christianity spread eastward following the lines of Syriac trade and culture. Its most notable early success was in the city of Edessa [ED-ES-SA]—in the eastern reaches of what is now Turkey. This city became Christian, apparently during the rule of King Abgarus IX [AB-GAH-RUS 9] (179–216), long before the Roman Empire embraced Christianity, and thus seems to have been the earliest Christian state. Soon the legend arose that the conversion of Edessa [ED-ES-SA] had taken place much earlier, during Jesus’s lifetime, and that King Abgarus V [AB-GAH-RUS 10], who suffered from leprosy, had sent a letter to Jesus asking that he come and cure his leprosy. Instead of coming personally, Jesus sent Thaddeus, his disciple, with a letter to Abgarus [AB-GAH-RUS]. The latter was cured, embraced Christianity, and urged his subjects to do likewise. The legend probably dates from the time of Abgarus IX [AB-GAH-RUS 9], for the words of Jesus quoted in the correspondence are taken from Tatian’s [TAY-SHUN’s] Diatessaron [DY-AH-TESS-UH-ROHN]. At any rate, by the fourth century the legend was well-established, for Eusebius [YOU-SEE-BEE-US] of Caesarea mentions it and quotes from the letters in question. The letter supposedly written by Jesus soon became a popular talisman. Translated into Greek, Latin, Arabic, Copt, and Slavonic, people would carry it into battle, or during epidemics, as a talisman to save them from injury or disease. At any rate, long before the conversion of Constantine the kings of Edessa [ED-ES-SA], and most of their subjects, were Christian.

In the nearby region of Adiabene [AH-DI-AH-BENE] there appears to have been a Christian community quite early in the second century. The royal family that ruled there had been converted to Judaism during the reign of Emperor Claudius (41–54), and most of the area had embraced that faith. Apparently a number of these Jews became Christians, for there is evidence of a Christian community there early in the second century.

Next time, we will continue looking at “Beyond the Borders of the Empire.”

Let’s pray.

—PRAYER—

Dear friend, simply knowing the facts about Christian history without knowing the One on Whom this faith is based will do you no good. If you do not believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, may I encourage you to get to know Him today. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can be a part of the church in this life and in the life to come. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:13 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Until next time, remember that history is truly His story.

PODCAST: How to Stay the Coronavirus Plague Briefing Podcast #17 with Daniel Whyte III

Welcome to the How to Stay the Coronavirus Plague Briefing Podcast #17. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.

Deuteronomy 28:61 said, “Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.”

Matthew Henry said, “Sickness is another common effect of a strait and long siege, and that is here threatened: Sore sickness, and of long continuance. These should attend the Jews wherever they went afterwards, the diseases of Egypt, leprosies, botches, and foul ulcers. Nay, as if the particular miseries here threatened were not enough, he concludes with an et cetera. The Lord will bring upon thee every sickness, and every plague, though it be not written in the book of this law. Those that fall under the curse of God will find that the one half was not told them of the weight and terror of that curse. Multitudes of them should perish, so that they should become few in number. It was a nation that God had wonderfully increased, so that they were as the stars of heaven for multitude; but, for their sin, they were diminished and brought low.”

REPENT!

Leonard Ravenhill said, “Entertainment is the devil’s substitute for joy. The more joy you have in the Lord the less entertainment you need.”

Job 14:15 says, “Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.”

Dave Ramsey said, “So how does my surrender play into our success? I was so broke and broken, at the bottom of that valley, that my personal faith was deepened dramatically. As a Christian I made the decision to run every area of my life as consistently with the Bible as I could. It is important to relate that once I started over and opened our new business, I decided that I would follow the spirit and the direction of Scripture to operate our business. I am convinced that those principles, woven into the coming pages, are the reason we win. Even if you aren’t a person of faith, you have to believe in hard work or you won’t win. You have to believe in treating people like you want to be treated or you won’t win. You will discover that the principles we follow are very akin to common sense. There is very little that is mystical or weird about how we work, except that we win.”

——

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, please understand that you are a sinner and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Please understand that because of your sins, you deserve punishment in hell. Romans 6:23 says “the wages of sin is death…” This is both physical death and spiritual death in hell.

But here is the good news. John 3:16 reads, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The phrase “For God so loved the world” means that if you are in this world, God loves you no matter what you have done.

The next phrase, “that He gave His only begotten Son” refers to Jesus Christ. He is God’s son who suffered, bled, and died on the cross for your sins and for mine, and He was buried and rose again.

Our next phrase is “that whosoever believeth in Him”. The word “whosoever” means anybody at anytime. The phrase “believeth in Him” means to trust in Him, to depend upon Him, to rely on Him, or to have faith in Him for your salvation.

Our next phrase, “should not perish”, refers to eternal punishment in a place called hell.

And, lastly, the phrase “but have everlasting life” means to live eternally in Heaven with God.

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

Virginia Pastor Who Criticized ‘Mass Hysteria’ Surrounding Coronavirus Pandemic Dies from Illness

A Virginia pastor who criticized the “mass hysteria” surrounding the coronavirus pandemic has died of the illness, according to new reports.

Landon Spradlin, of Gretna — a small town halfway between Lynchburg and Danville — started to feel sick while in New Orleans, where he went to preach to the crowds gathered for Mardi Gras celebrations, according to the BBC.

A month later, Spradlin — who was also a seasoned musician inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2016 — died.

“His mission was to go into pubs, clubs and bars, play the blues and connect with musicians and just tell them that Jesus loved them,” Spradlin’s daughter Jesse Spradlin, 28, told the BBC.

“Mardi Gras is like Times Square in New York during New Year’s Eve. It’s a sea of people just drinking and partying. He was loud and laughing and in his element.”

Spradlin began to feel unwell while in New Orleans but initially tested negative for COVID-19.

As he battled symptoms, he shared a controversial meme on March 13, comparing coronavirus deaths to swine flu deaths, Patch reported. The meme is no longer visible on his Facebook page.

The meme decried the public reaction to the pandemic as “mass hysteria” and suggested the media was using the outbreak to hurt President Trump.

In the comments, the pastor said he believes the coronavirus “is a real issue, but I believe the media is pumping out fear and doing more harm than good.”

“It will come and it will go,” he wrote, according to Patch.
