Charleston AME Church Names Woman as New Pastor for First Time After Fatal Church Shooting

Christian Post Report – The Rev. Betty Deas Clark.

The Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina, where nine parishioners attending a Bible study were gunned down by an avowed white racist last June, has named as their new pastor, for the first time in the church’s storied history, a woman — the Rev. Betty Deas Clark.

In her first message to the church on Sunday, Clark, who according to The Post and Courier was trembling and scared, preached a message about hope.

“In my heart I felt that it was the right word,” she said after the church service. “I did not want to dwell too heavily on the past, but I wanted to embrace the reality of the present and the future.”

Clark, who previously led the historic Mount Pisgah AME Church in Sumter according to WIAT, said she was a friend of the late state senator and Rev. Clementa Pinckney who was among those executed last June.

“I’m sure that to some of my parishioners it’s like yesterday,” Clark told WIAT.

“It’s going to take me some time to sit with the people, cry with the people, talk to the people, then talk to God and ask Him where do we go from here? To be determined by God’s will,” she said.

In her message, she told the congregation that it would take time for them to get to know each other.

“God feels our pain, hears our cries and He knows our every move,” she said. “While the dreams, expectations and bodies of many have been laid to rest, we must not allow nor put our hope to rest. We must believe as a family in God (and) that our best days are in front of us. We must believe that better days are coming,” she said, according to The Post and Courier.

She also alluded to her appointment as “charting new waters.”

“I know that we’re doing things that we’ve never done before,” she said. “But every morning you wake up, you see a day you’ve never seen before. And every step that you take is a step that you’ve never taken before. … Today is just the beginning.”

A number of longtime members of the church praised Clark’s sermon and expressed relief about having a permanent pastor.

“Thank the Lord, God has sent us a woman after God’s own heart,” said Brenda Bennett.

Since the brutal attack at the church, the congregation of more than 1,000 had been led by interim pastor the Rev. Norvel Goff. He will be running for bishop and now serves as the region’s presiding elder, says The Post and Courier.

“Sister Goff and I will be on a journey through the other churches, so you won’t see me every Sunday,” he said in a warm goodbye. “But I want Mother Emanuel to know that our hearts and our prayers are with each and every one of you. You are forever part of a special place in our hearts and we love you (and) care about you.”

Ken Ham’s Ark Encounter to Host Millions of Visitors in 40 Days, 40 Nights Opening

Ark Encounter (Photo: Facebook/Ark Encounter)

Christian Post Report – Real-life replica of Noah’s Ark while still under construction, Williamstown Kentucky, January 16

Answers in Genesis opened an online ticketing system at the top of the year to help manage the millions of requests they have been receiving to tour the life-size re-creation of Noah’s Ark known as Ark Encounter.

With more than 1.4 million visitors expected, tickets will be sold for separate daytime or evening visits during the first 40 days of opening, starting July 7. The 40 days and 40 nights theme reflects the number of days and nights it rained while Noah and his family were on the Ark, as documented in Genesis 7.

The Ark Encounter will be located in northern Kentucky (south of Cincinnati). Workers at the Williamstown site are busy constructing the internal exhibit areas of the Ark now that the external shell is largely complete.

The main attraction is the largest timber frame structure in the world, standing at 510 feet long in accordance with the dimensions specified in the Bible. The Ark Encounter’s vast size is getting a lot of attention not only across the United States, but around the world.

Ken Ham, president and founder of Answers in Genesis, said in a statement to The Christian Post that he’s “eagerly looking forward to the educational and evangelistic opportunity the Ark will be for so many thousands of guests expected to visit daily during the first 40 days and nights.”

“Today, we don’t need another Ark to save animals and people from a global Flood,” Ham said in the statement. “But we do need another kind of Ark, to take people on what we are calling a ‘voyage of discovery.'”

The Ark Encounter will be able to accommodate about 16,000 guests per day, but tickets have gone to pre-sale because research has shown that more people than that could be expected during the first few weeks of opening, because of the summer.

For the first 40 days, guests can purchase daytime tickets for 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. or night time tickets for 5 p.m. – midnight, a method hoping to alleviate the crowds. The day and evening times will also offer some differing experiences. Tickets are $40 for adults, $28 for children and $31 for seniors.

So far, over $88 million of the $92 million needed for the construction has been raised through bonds, donations, and memberships.

A decision is still pending on whether the Ark Encounter will be able to participate in the state’s sales tax rebate program for tourist attractions, which is currently being litigated.

It is anticipated that thousands of new jobs will be created outside of the Ark theme park, and new hotels and other businesses are under development near the Ark site as well.

The Creation Museum in Petersburg, 40 miles from the Ark site, has been visited by over 2.5 million guests since opening in 2007. In the past two years, the museum unveiled a world-class $1.5 million exhibit of an allosaurus dinosaur skeleton, and it hosted the famous Bill Nye/Ken Ham evolution-creation debate (estimated to have now been watched by upwards of 15 million people).

Christian Pakistani Girl Killed After Rejecting Sexual Advances by Muslim Men

Pakistani Christians (Photo: Reuters/Mani Rana)

Christian Post Report – Women from the Christian community attend a protest after twin blast attacks on two churches in Lahore March 15, 2015. Bombs outside two churches in the Pakistani city of Lahore killed 10 people and wounded more than 55 during Sunday services, rescue workers said, and witnesses said quick action by a security guard prevented many more deaths. A Pakistani Taliban splinter group claimed responsibility.

Persecution watchdog groups are raising awareness for a Christian Pakistani girl who was killed earlier this month after she and her friends rejected the sexual advances of drunken Muslim men in Lahore, Defence Colony.

The British Pakistani Christian Association reported last week that the incident occurred on Jan. 13, when three young Christian girls, Kiran (17 years), Shamroza (18 years) and Sumble (20 years), were approached on the streets at night by four allegedly drunk Muslim men in a car. The girls rejected the lewd advances of the men, which caused them to turn violent.

“How dare you run away from us, Christian girls are only meant for one thing, the pleasure of Muslim men,” one of the men reportedly said.

The men then crashed their car right into the girls, causing Shamroza to break several ribs and Sumble to brake her hip. Kiran, however, was lifted up from the ground on the hood of the car, and driven until the car suddenly stopped, throwing her rapidly to the ground, where she cracked open her head and suffered internal bleeding, leading to her death.

“All three families are really shook-up, Shamroza and Sumble are grateful to God for saving them but have been inconsolable at the loss of a close friend. Other girls in the local area are now too scared to travel at night and are being accompanied by the men in their families. The community wants justice for poor Kiran and seeks an end to the targeting of young Christian girls,” said Naveed Aziz of the BPCA.

The families of the Christian girls even had to pay a bribe to police in order to have a First Incident Report registered, given how unwilling police in Pakistan are to help Christian victims of violence.

“The family are calling for a murder enquiry but because of the wealthy status of the young men, little hope exists that justice will prevail. Police are said to be doing little to apprehend the young men and are allegedly delaying the investigative process. Often in such cases evidence goes missing and witnesses are either threatened or bought out by the families of wealthy criminals in a country where corruption is rife and lauded,” the organization said.

International Christian Concern also reported on the crime, noting that Christians are “considered second class citizens” by the Muslim majority in the country.

Christian girls and women are often the subject of such violence, and there were numerous internationally reported cases from last year.

Late in November, American Center for Law and Justice affiliated group Organization for Legal Aid in Pakistan, prepared charges in the case of an 8-year-old Christian girl who was beaten and left naked on the streets by a Muslim family that wanted to punish her uncle for an interreligious relationship.

BPCA has meanwhile started a petition for victims like Kiran, and has also set up a donations fund where people can financially contribute to the work that goes into helping Christian families.

“This act of violence should be met with the strong arm of the law. In any other nation the perpetrators would be arrested, convicted for murder and sentenced for a long term. In Pakistan, however, the poor go to prison and the wealthy commit whatever crime they wish with impunity. Violence against Christians is rarely investigated and highly unlikely to be met with justice,” said Wilson Chowdhry, chairman of the BPCA.

Faith-Based Film ‘Only God Can’ Wins Indie Fest Film Award for Excellence

Only God Can(Photo: OnlyGodCanMovie.com)Poster art for “Only God Can,” a film about the role faith plays in overcoming life’s challenges, 2016.

Christian Post Report – The new faith-based film “Only God Can” has received the Indie Fest Film Award of Excellence under the Christian category at its annual awards show.

The inspirational faith-based film focuses on the lives of five long-time friends who are struggling to make it through life’s escalating challenges after a tragic, life-changing event threatens to break them apart. They soon discover that, through faith, only God can empower them to overcome the obstacles they face and become the people they truly hope to be.

The film was made specifically for and about Christian women and is meant to be a beacon of light that encourages viewers to exemplify Christ’s love and commitment in their lives.

“Only God Can” stars Lisa Sheridan (“Sandal” and “CSI”) as Sara, Donna D’Errico (“Austin Powers” and “Reno 911”) as Coley, Robbi Chong (“ER” and “The Cosby Show”) as Patrice, Vanessa Evigan (“How I Met Your Mother”) as Gracie, and Greg Evigan (“B. J. and the Bear” and “My Two Dads”) as Pastor Rodney.

“Those who see ‘Only God Can’ will get clarity of spirit as it relates to being helpers one to another,” said Linda Flannery, founder of Inspire Entertainment, which produced the film, in a statement to The Christian Post. “Many times we think because some seem to have it all, they don’t need any help. But that is farther from the truth. As portrayed in ‘Only God Can,’ it boils down to strength, support, unconditional love … and deliverance like only God can.”

In its seventh year, the Indie Fest Film Awards is a cutting edge worldwide competition for independent films. Along with being named for excellence at Indie Fest, “Only God Can” was also an official selection at the 20th anniversary of the International Family Film Festival at Raleigh Studios and is an official selection at the 2016 Inspired Faith Film Festival, which will announce its winners in February.

5 Christian Kids Seized by Norwegian Gov’t Over ‘Spankings,’ Not Family’s Faith, Activist Says

The Bodnariu family (Photo: Facebook/Norway, Return the children to Bodnariu Family)

Christian Post Report – The Bodnariu family.

The reason why five Romanian Pentecostal children were seized from their parents in November by Norwegian child services is because authorities used the fact that parents disciplined their children with spankings to charge them with child abuse, an activist close to the situation says.

Lawyer Peter Costea, the president of the Alliance for Romania’s Families who has been in frequent communication with the family and its lawyers and has access to court records, told The Christian Post on Monday that court documents indicate that the five children of Ruth and Marius Bodnariu were taken from their parents’ custody on Nov. 16, 2015, because the children told investigators that their parents spanked them as a disciplinary measure.

Costea explained that on Nov. 16, the Bodnariu’s two daughters got into a fight on the bus while on the way to school and the oldest daughter was then questioned by the school’s principal how they were being treated by the parents at home.

After the daughter explained that her parents used spankings to discipline her and her siblings, Costea, who is based in Texas, explained that the principal contacted authorities like she is legally obliged to do and told them about the spanking allegations.

Costea was informed by sources close to the matter that investigators from the Barnevernet (Norway’s child service agency) asked the children leading questions in order to procure incriminating evidence against the parents, allowing the agency to remove the children from the home.

In a letter sent to Tove Bruvik Westberg, the Norwegian Ambassador to Romania, Costea wrote that Norway has violated the Bodnariu’s parenting rights and added that the “punishment doesn’t fit the crime.”

“In our opinion, the reaction of the Norwegian authorities has been extremely subjective, an incredible display of totalitarian extremism. The Bodnariu family has been accused of spanking its children. Yet, the authorities translated this accusation into child abuse, which is farthest from the truth,” Costea wrote. “Biological parents have the inherent right to reasonably discipline their children. The fact that Norway has banned corporal punishment of children does not mean that Norway is right in this matter and the rest of the world wrong.”

Costea added that the disciplinary measures taken by the Bodnariu parents does not violate the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“Though Norway might wish to be a step ahead of the convention in this regard, the convention does not give it the right to confiscate children from their biological parents,” he wrote. “The reaction of the Norwegian authorities has been disproportionate to the improprieties that the Bodnariu parents are alleged to have committed. It has been irrational and extreme.”

Costea told CP that neighbors and even the girls’ principal have supplied testimonies stating that the Bodnariu parents are good parents. However, those testimonies have been ignored by Barnevernet investigators.

“The documents contain a lot of extenuating evidence or exculpatory evidence for the parents from neighbors, coming from the school principal, coming from the local municipality and all of that seems to have been absolutely ignored by the child welfare agency, which, in my mind, is absolutely major and a denial of due process,” Costea said.

“The school principal lives almost next door, they live in the same neighborhood and she kept on saying,

‘Look, the girls are normal, they are intelligent, they are developing well, and have never seen any abuse,'” Costea added. “‘They have all they need to eat. They bring lunch to school everyday. I haven’t seen any problems. The parents and the girls and the children play together and engage in various activities and I have never had any suspicions and I haven’t seen anything.'”

Despite the testimonies in support of the Bodnariu parents, the children remain in three separate foster homes and the parents have limited visitation rights.

The Bodnariu family’s next court hearing is scheduled for sometime in March. Although the family has claimed that the Barnevernet has initiated the adoption process for the children, Costea states that the authorities can’t put the children up for adoption until the parental relationship has been completely severed.

“In March, they will have a hearing on whether or not to sever the parental relationship and they want the parents to be subjected to a psychological evaluation,” Costea explained.

In an attempt to get the Norwegian authorities to release the children back to their parents, at least 10 members of the Romanian Parliament traveled to Oslo last week to meet with Norwegian authorities. However, Costea has not received word on whether an agreement has been reached.

Although it was initially reported that the principal called the authorities out of concern over the family’s Christian faith, Costea states that such a claim is not accurate.

“The school principal actually did not, at least based upon what I know and have read, the school principal did not convey any concern about the religious beliefs of the family,” Costea stated. “In Norway, teachers have the obligation to inform the authorities whenever school kids tell them ‘Hey, my parents are spanking me or hitting me.'”

The Bodnariu family is not alone in their grievances with the Barnevernet. Costea contends that the Barnevernet has displayed a pattern of targeting migrant families.

“I have come across a whole bunch of documents, including a petition that was signed by parents from all over the world — Eastern Europe, Turkey, India, Polish, Czech, Lithuanian and so on — whose children have been seized by Norwegian authorities,” Costea said. “The consensus of these migrants living in Norway is ‘they are targeting us among others because they want our kids to grow up Norwegian.'”

Pastor E. Dewey Smith Grieves After Death of Sister and Mother Weeks Apart

Pastor E. Dewey Smith (Photo: Facebook/E. Dewey Smith)

Christian Post Report – Pastor E. Dewey Smith and his sister Edwanna Smith Stephens.

Just 21 days after the death of his mother, Verlene Smith, Senior Pastor E. Dewey Smith Jr. at The House of Hope Atlanta (Greater Travelers Rest) in Decatur, Georgia, is in mourning again, this time for his sister, Edwanna Smith Stephens, who died last Friday.

“My brother passed 1/29/07. My mother left me 1/2/16. And my sister 1/22/16. I’m hurting bad, yet thankful,” Smith noted in a Facebook post the day after his sister died.

On Sunday, in brief remarks to his congregation, he thanked them for supporting him through his dark time and revealed that his siblings had requested that he deliver their eulogies should he outlive them.

Thank you for your prayers and support from Dr. Smith

Posted by The official page of Pastor E. Dewey Smith, Jr. on Sunday, January 24, 2016

“I want to thank you for your prayers and support. You know many of us have had deaths in our family. It’s one thing when you have to use your hands to close your momma’s casket and two weeks later use the same hands and close your sister’s eyes, to see her take her last breath. It’s just been not the best time. I thank you for understanding that, I hope you can,” began Smith in a video clip of his remarks.

“Your support means everything, it really does, I thank God for the timing. And so sadly, some of you were there Jan. 9, when we said ‘see you later’ to my mother and three weeks later, for some reason, my siblings have all decided that if I should outlive them, that I would have to say the final words over them. And so having to preach my sister’s eulogy two weeks after doing my mom’s is not something I look forward to. And so your prayers mean everything to me. It really does,” he added.

I STILL can't believe I'm actually posting this…….SMH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!On January 9, 2016 I had to give the Eulogy…

Posted by The official page of Pastor E. Dewey Smith, Jr. on Sunday, January 24, 2016

Stephens’ memorial service is planned for Jan. 30 at the Macon Centreplex in Macon, Georgia.
Perhaps a prelude of what can be expected in the eulogy of his sister on Saturday, Smith shared a few words about his sister on his Facebook page.

“You were mad at me because I ‘replaced you as the baby’! However, it didn’t take long before I became ‘your baby’! You made me practice the piano for YEARS, helped me with algebra and taught me how to drive a ‘stick-shift’! I thought you were the ‘sweetest’ until I got ‘older’ and learned you could be just as MEAN as sweet! You got on my ‘nerves’ because you did it ‘your way’ but KNOW, I loved you more than ANY brother ever loved their sister!” he wrote.

“I wish you could get on my ‘nerves’ just ONE MORE time……I SWEAR, I wouldn’t complain, fuss or give a REBUTTAL!!!! I know Momma is SO GLAD to see you……I’m glad you’re not hurting anymore……” he continued. “Just know that both of y’all leaving us in 21 DAYS is an EXCRUCIATING pain to carry!!!! I LOVE YOU SUG!!!!!! I’LL NEVER FORGET YOU!!!!!!!!!”

Smith has been receiving an outpouring of support from congregants and pastors alike, such as Jentezen Franklin, senior pastor of Free Chapel in Gainesville, Georgia, who tweeted “praying for you sir. They are in your future not your past.”

My Brother passed 1/29/07,My Mother left me 1/2/16And my Sister 1/22/16. I'm hurting bad, yet thankful.

Stephen Colbert Lampoons Trump on ‘2 Corinthians’ Remark

Stephen Colbert (Photo: Screengrab/YouTube/The Late Show with Stephen Colbert)

Christian Post Report – Stephen Colbert, host of the Late Show on CBS.

Comedian and primetime television host Stephen Colbert poked some fun at Republican primary frontrunner Donald Trump over the billionaire real estate mogul’s recent “Two Corinthians” comment.

Last week when addressing students at Liberty University, Trump referred to the New Testament book of 2 Corinthians as Two Corinthians.

On an episode of CBS’ “The Late Show.” Colbert made fun of Trump’s speech before Liberty, referring to it as “the pander express.”

“Trump loves the Bible so much he doesn’t even need to read it, apparently, because he had a little trouble with the name of one of the books of the Bible,” said the “Late Show” host.

Donald TrumpREUTERS / Scott MorganRepublican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally at Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa, January 15, 2016.

After showing the part of the speech where Trump called the book Two Corinthians, Colbert asked one of the show’s musicians if he had ever heard the book called Two Corinthians, to which he responded “never in my life.”

Colbert then compared saying Two Corinthians to pronouncing the Old Testament book of Job like the word job.

“The Mexicans are coming here into our country to steal our book of Jobs,” Colbert said, mockingly, alluding to past controversial remarks made by Trump.

In remarks given to Liberty University students last week, Trump garnered backlash over his referring to 2 Corinthians as Two Corinthians.

“We’re going to protect Christianity. I can say that. I don’t have to be politically correct. … Two Corinthians, 3:17, that’s the whole ballgame … is that the one you like?” stated Trump, as reported by Politico.

Trump’s overall speech as well as his name for the New Testament Epistle received critique from both Liberty students and others on social media.

“He mispronounced a book of the Bible. He cursed — twice. And on Martin Luther King Day, the GOP presidential candidate said he was honoring the slain civil rights leader by dedicating to him the record crowds he says he drew for the school’s opening convocation,” reported NPR.

“Students in the room snickered and laughed, and advisers to two of Trump’s top rivals, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, were quick to point out the gaffe on Twitter.”

Bobby Ross Jr. of GetReligion.org noted, however, in a piece published Tuesday that Trump might not have actually done anything wrong when calling the Epistle Two Corinthians.

Ross said in British English the term Two Corinthians is used and Trump does have a Scottish mother, thereby possibly influencing how he spoke the name.

“So no, Trump didn’t really mess up. Except that he probably did. The takeaway from a media reporting standpoint: More context is always helpful. So are fewer assumptions,” wrote Ross.

Colbert’s comedic critique of Trump’s speech come as the businessman continues to top the ranks of the Republican field.

The Challenge of Unplugging ISIS From the Internet

The Challenge Of Unplugging ISIS From The Internet

Christian Post Report – A top executive at Google has suggested that IS’ access to the Internet be blocked to stop the terror group from using the Web as a propaganda platform.

While speaking at the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House in London Monday, Jared Cohen, Google’s head of ideas, suggested that IS has taken advantage of social media platforms as a recruitment tool, especially for young, impressionable westerners.

Cohen said a “short-term win” for this problem would be to force IS to be contained to the “dark web,” thus making it more difficult for Internet users to come into contact with the terrorist organization and risk being recruited to join its ranks.

Marco Rubio Turns the Tables on an Atheist Critic

Marco Rubio Turns The Tables On An Atheist Critic

Christian Post Report – Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio told an atheist in the audience that he won’t be “forced” to stop talking about his faith on the campaign trail and argued that atheists should want his faith to influence his decisions.

During Rubio’s Monday town hall meeting in Waverly, Iowa, an atheist attendee named Justin Scott, a member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation who also runs his own YouTube channel, commented during a question and answer session on Rubio’s recent campaign ad that simply features Rubio talking about how he follows his faith and that his goal is to live alongside God for eternity.

Scott argued that it seems like Rubio, who is Catholic, is more interested in running for “Pastor-in-Chief” rather than Commander-in-Chief and then asked Rubio how he would defend the rights of nontheists if he is elected president in 2016.

“As I said during my speech, you have the right to believe whatever you want, you have a right to believe in nothing at all. You certainly have that right. I can’t force you to be Christian,” Rubio responded. “Christianity is a free gift and we Christians believe that salvation is a free gift that has to be willfully accepted. You can’t force it on people. You have a right to believe in whatever you want. Now, I am going to share my faith, especially when I am asked. Because, my faith influences who I am and every aspect of my life.”
