Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt Highlights the Importance of Forgiveness

Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt Highlights the Importance of Forgiveness

There is a curious familiarity felt from Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt’s first hello, her comfortable presence made me feel as though I’d known her for quite some time. For someone with her storied family tree, this is even more of a special character trait. She comes from what some might consider, American royalty. You see, Katherine is the daughter of former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and journalist Maria Shriver, the great-niece of Former President John F. Kennedy, and the grandchild of grandparents who founded the Peace Corps and the Special Olympics. Oh, and she is also the wife of film and television actor, Chris Pratt. But she is quiet about all of that and makes it known that she is simply one of us.

However, when it comes to the subject of forgiveness, she’s not quite at all—both her need to receive it as well as offer it to others. She shares, “I struggle with forgiveness, which is why I’ve become a student of forgiveness.” As a result, Katherine has authored three books, the newest of which is entitled The Gift of Forgiveness, a book that she clearly enjoyed writing and leaning into its subject matter. “Writing a book on forgiveness is something that was therapeutic for me.” And you experience this when talking with Katherine. It feels as though you’re talking to a counselor and friend. Which is one of the things that Katherine hopes people…

More Than 1 Million Masks Being Rushed to Hard Hit US Areas – Here's Where They're Coming From

Nearly 200,000 life-saving N-95 masks are being rushed to healthcare workers in the hardest-hit areas of New York and New Jersey by the US Justice Department.

You might ask, why would the Justice Department be involved in providing medical masks? It’s because they took the masks back from hoarders who were preventing them from getting to the people who really need them.

The department’s new hoarding and price gouging task force says the FBI just uncovered the masks, along with other protective gear, like 600,000 medical gloves, hand sanitizer and other personal protective equipment.

They were allowed to seize the equipment under the Defense Production Act which President Trump authorized. The hoarder of the equipment will be reimbursed at “fair market value”.

New England Patriots Fly in 1 Million Masks

Meanwhile, more than 1 million N-95 masks are also coming to the US from China today, courtesy of the NFL’s New England Patriots. A team plane departed from Shenzhen, China, in the early hours this morning.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker struck a deal with China for the masks two weeks ago but needed a way to get them here. Jonathan Kraft, who’s president of the Patriots and chairman of the board of Massachusetts General Hospital, told the governor he had something that just might help.

LA Leaders Want Everyone to Wear a Mask

On the West Coast, protective masks are taking center stage as well. The mayor of Los Angeles is calling on people to wear masks or face coverings to help fight the spread of coronavirus.

The city is hoping to produce 5 million non-medical masks to help “essential employees” like grocery workers and pharmacy workers.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said, “To be clear, you should still stay home. This isn’t an excuse to suddenly all go out, you need to stay at home. But when you do leave the house we are recommending you wear non-medical grade masks, or facial coverings and not take the ones reserved by a medical community.”

The mayor says he’s calling on Los Angeles residents to take measures, though the CDC has not made the official recommendation.

Good News from the COVID-19 Frontlines: Social Distancing Working to Contain Virus's Spread

Despite growing coronavirus numbers, experts say the social distancing is working. They warn, however, the evidence that mitigation measures are working will lag behind the effects of the deadly disease.

According to the experts, an estimated 25% of people carrying COVID-19 don’t show any symptoms. That’s why mitigation efforts like social distancing are seen as so important, and why infectious disease experts say they’ll ultimately pay off.

The numbers are staggering: 1,700 new cases in the US for a nationwide total of some 216,000 cases of COVID-19. Add to that a reported 1,000 coronavirus deaths nationwide in just one day. Still, the nation’s top health officials insist things are getting better.

“In the next several days to a week or so, we’re going to continue to see things go up,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “We cannot be discouraged by that because the mitigation is actually working and will work.”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) says there’s an increase in the number of patients being discharged from the hospital in the country’s epicenter

“That’s good news,” Cuomo said. “The number of people going into the hospital is going up, the number of people coming out of the hospital is going up.”

There continues to be a crucial need for ventilators. Officials say some of the machines being delivered to hospitals are broken.  Another necessity in short supply is oxygen.

“The problem with oxygen at this point in the COVID-19 pandemic is that instead of having 20 cases in an ICU, hospitals now have 300 patients all on ventilators that are consuming oxygen 24/7,” said Dr. Peter Papadakos of the University of Rochester Medical Center. “This is a demand that we’ve never seen before throughout the United States or throughout the world”

In New York’s Central Park, the Samaritan’s Purse field hospital with 14 tents and 63 beds began treating patients Wednesday.

“We’ve responded internationally to Ebola. We’ve been in a war zone in Iraq. This is very surreal to be on our own soil in the United States. To see such a beautiful city impacted by this, but it doesn’t change at all the need and our ability to help,” said ICU Nurse Kirsten Dirks.

Military officials say the USS Theodore Roosevelt will remove 3,000 sailors because dozens on the aircraft carrier have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Elsewhere in the world, Spanish officials announced Thursday 950 deaths in the last 24 hours, surpassing Italy’s daily death rate.  Though Italy has so far had the world’s deadliest outbreak in total numbers, its death rate peaked in late March and has seen a decline since.

Through it all there’s encouraging news.  A veteran from Oregon is celebrating his remarkable recovery from the virus, and he’s 104-years-old.

Meanwhile, two Holland America cruise ships off the Florida coast are still awaiting an answer on if they can dock. Four people have died aboard one of the vessels, and several of the passengers have tested positive for the coronavirus.

And speaking of tests: Abbott Labs has developed a 5-minute COVID-19 test kit that officials say is very accurate. Right now, 50,000 of them are being made each day to be distributed across the country. Experts say that it will help find people carrying the virus which, along with social distancing, will be the main way to fight this war and win.

‘Criticism Resulting from My Mistakes Was Justified’: Museum of the Bible Receives Heavy Criticism over Stolen Artifacts

‘Criticism Resulting from My Mistakes Was Justified’: Museum of the Bible Receives Heavy Criticism over Stolen Artifacts

About 11,500 antiquities are being given back to the Iraqi and Egyptian governments by Steve Green, president of Hobby Lobby and chairman of the Museum of the Bible.

According to Christianity Today, “ancient clay seals and fragments of papyrus” housed in the Museum of the Bible were possibly “looted or stolen” and lack “complete documentation.”

Green had acquired the antiquities prior to the museum’s grand opening in Washington, DC, in November 2017 but admitted in a statement issued on Sunday that he fell short when it came to “appreciating the importance of the provenance of the items I purchased.”

In the official statement, Green acknowledged that the Museum’s early mistakes that resulted in “a great deal of criticism over the years,” which he asserted “was justified.”

“The criticism resulting from my mistakes was justified,” Green wrote on the Museum’s website.

“My goal was always to protect, preserve, study, and share cultural property with the world,” he continued. “That goal has not changed, but after some early missteps, I made the decision many years ago that, moving forward, I would only acquire items with reliable, documented provenance.

“Furthermore, if I learn of other items in the collection for which another person or entity has a better claim, I will continue to do the right thing…

More than 40 spring breakers test positive for coronavirus: Choosing between what we want to do and what we should do

About seventy college students from Texas boarded a
chartered a plane from Austin, Texas, to Mexico for spring break two weeks ago.
They went against the warnings of White House officials who asked people avoid
gatherings of more than ten people and all nonessential air travel.

Now forty-four of the students have tested positive for coronavirus, a University of Texas spokesman told CNN today. Even more alarming, some of the students took commercial flights home. Dozens of other passengers from the chartered flight are being monitored, public health officials said.

These students are unfortunately not the only people to defy
stay-at-home orders and put themselves and others at risk.

I live in Dallas, Texas, where some joggers have continued to crowd trails and parks despite repeated requests by public officials not to do so. South African security forces are firing rubber bullets at people defying stay-at-home orders as they attempt to clear streets, parks, and other public places.

California’s governor closed all state parks to cars on
Sunday. The mayor of Los Angeles has threatened to shut off water and power to
businesses that remain open. On Monday, he temporarily shut down all farmers’
markets across the city.

By contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has returned to self-isolation for another six days after his health minister was diagnosed with coronavirus. I tweeted the news earlier today along with this response: “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it” (Proverbs 27:12).

Why is it so difficult for us to stay at home?

Psychologists note that humans crave human touching, which
releases chemicals in the brain and body that make us happy. We have developed
as a species through collective community, whether in families, tribes, or
cities.

But there’s another factor at work as well: balancing
individualism with collectivism.

Choosing between what we want…

Agege Bread Pizza

Pizza is an import to Nigeria and because of its unique taste, it’s not surprising that it has become so popular, especially among the younger generation of Nigerians.

The establishment of pizza food companies such as Domino’s, in many African countries including Nigeria, has made pizza more accessible and it has become much more of a favourite fast food for an increasing number of people in Nigeria. The only thing is, it could be pricey!

Making pizza is actually quite straight forward. Just a little effort and of-course the basic ingredients including pizza dough/base, cheese, tomato sauce and a variety of vegetables and meat pieces, are all that’s required really.

I would say that making pizza dough is an easy process, but its not something that can be done quickly without effort. I have seen several recipes using different types of dough and bread as a base for making it. Different types of flatbreads, thin or thick crust bases, all sorts, have also been used.

It would seem that different countries have had their own spin on making pizza, so I thought I might also try to give Pizza a Nigerian identity..if possible. 😊😊😊😊

All I needed was to find a suitable base, some cheese, a good tomato sauce and a variety of my favourite vegetables and proteins. My first thoughts for a base.. Agege Bread.!

Agege Bread is Nigeria’s staple bread, which is a dense, sweet type of bread. Its also referred to as hard dough bread. The texture is quite soft and doughy and perfect for making pizza. Making pizza with Agege Bread was a hit first time..! It was quick to make, no stress and it was delicious.! Try it out.

What you need

  • Agege bread
  • Tomato sauce
  • Grated cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • Variety of chopped vegetables (eg onion, green pepper, etc)
  • Chicken shreds (preferably cooked or roasted chicken. Other types of meat can also be used.)
  • Fresh herbs (basil or thyme)
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil

What to do

  1. Slice the bread across its breadth and place it on an oven tray.
  2. Separately, make some tomato sauce by mixing some tomato paste, olive oil, warm water, and salt and pepper in a bowl.
  3. Spread sauce on the sliced bread evenly. Then top with grated cheese, followed by chopped onions, green peppers, and shredded chicken. (Also add other toppings of your choice.)
  4. Drizzle with some extra virgin olive oil.
  5. Then place in a pre-heated oven with the top grill on. This will allow the pizza to cook from the top. Remember the bread is already cooked so it would not need much further cooking.
  6. Allow to cook for about 10 minutes, checking regularly to avoid burning.
  7. Serve hot. I promise you your kids will ask for more.

How the pandemic changed a Garth Brooks concert: The empowering joy of hearing God’s voice

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood

My wife and I are longtime Garth Brooks fans. We’ve watched his mammoth television concerts in packed stadiums over the years. Last night, however, we saw him perform in a completely different way.

Brooks and his very talented wife, Trisha Yearwood, sang songs by request for an hour in a small studio accompanied only by his guitar. All proceeds benefited healthcare workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

Actor John Krasinski made news this week in a similar way, hosting a very funny new YouTube show called Some Good News. His daughters made the logo. He recorded the show while sitting behind a desk at home. Steve Carell was one of his guests; he did the segment from his home as well.

Here’s another sign of the times: Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will reportedly stage a rematch of their winner-take-all, $9 million duel held in November 2018. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will apparently play with them. Spectators will not be allowed, however, and all proceeds will benefit charities associated with coronavirus relief.

Learning from Anne Frank

People are doing what they can to respond to what the United Nations chief calls “the greatest test that we have faced together” since World War II. COVID-19 is now the No. 3 cause of death in the US. In two weeks, its daily death toll could double to become our nation’s No. 1 killer, eclipsing heart disease.

Trials are now underway for a vaccine that would be the “ultimate game changer,” as White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said yesterday. Scientists in Australia have begun testing potential vaccines as well.

In the meantime, the most important way you and I can respond to this crisis is to practice the social and physical distancing that is crucial to slowing the spread of the disease. As one study shows, with normal behavior a single infected person will infect 406 people over thirty days. With 50 percent…

Trump: ‘My Biggest Disappointment’ is that Churches ‘Can’t Meet’ during Pandemic

Trump: ‘My Biggest Disappointment’ is that Churches ‘Can’t Meet’ during Pandemic

President Trump on Wednesday said his “single biggest disappointment” is that churches can’t meet during the COVID-19 pandemic and indicated it’s one reason he considered opening the country before Easter.

Although there is no federal policy governing churches meeting during the pandemic, the White House’s Coronavirus Guidelines urge Americans to “avoid social gatherings in groups of more than 10 people.” Vice President Mike Pence previously said the coronavirus is three times more contagious than the flu.

“My biggest disappointment is that churches can’t meet in a time of need,” Trump said, adding that times of need traditionally are “a great time for churches to be together for people.”

“And yet if you do that … you’re really giving this invisible enemy a very big advantage,” Trump said.

Churches, he said, were “one of the reasons” he considered an Easter date for re-opening the country. Trump called it an “aspirational” date. Eventually, he extended the Coronavirus Guidelines until the end of April.

“It’s very, very disappointing,” he said of churches being unable to meet, “but again, [if] you get too close and if somebody’s sick, you’re gonna probably catch it. So you have to be very careful.”

Some states, such as Washington, specifically prohibit churches from meeting. Others, such as Texas and Florida, specifically…

New Device Will Deliver COVID-19 Test Results Much Faster for Physicians

A new test for the COVID-19 virus will be able to deliver results to medical professionals in as little as five minutes, according to the medical device company Abbott.

Abbott’s device has received emergency use authorization (EUA) from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The company began shipping the device to emergency rooms around the country on Wednesday.

“This is going to be the fastest molecular point-of-care test to date,” said John Frels, Ph.D., Abbott’s vice president of research and development, in an interview with ABC News. “It generates a positive result in 5 minutes and negative results in 13 minutes.”

About the size of a small toaster, Abbott’s NOW COVID-19 test only weighs 6.6 pounds, and can be placed in a variety of locations. Because of its portability, it can be used in doctors’ offices and urgent care clinics.

The device can test one sample at a time. According to the Bangor Daily News, the machine can only handle four tests per hour.

“Faster is better,” Peter Pitts, a former US Food and Drug Administration commissioner and president of the nonprofit Center for Medicine in the Public Interest in New York City told the newspaper. “But there is no panacea. We need to use all the tools we have at our disposal. Anything additive will help with the backlog.”

Frels said such a test will allow frontline health care workers to see a patient, quickly diagnose them and make immediate decisions regarding treatment and care, helping prevent further transmission of the virus to other people.

Abbott will begin by supplying 50,000 tests a day with the goal to gradually increase to more than a million a month. According to the company, the cost of the test is expected to be comparable to the ID NOW flu test and will be covered by most insurance plans.

“This will fill a great need that is not being well served at this point,” said Frels.

Abbott is not the only company to receive emergency use authorization from the FDA.  Almost 24 test devices were also given a special license to proceed in the war against the coronavirus.

Watch How Abbott’s new device can test for COVID-19 below:

‘God Is Forcing Us to Rest’: Christian Sports Stars Talk Spiritual Growth during Lockdown

‘God Is Forcing Us to Rest’: Christian Sports Stars Talk Spiritual Growth during Lockdown

A group of high-profile Christian athletes have gotten together virtually in order to discuss some of the key spiritual lessons that God could be teaching us during this time of lockdown.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ inaugural “Huddle Up” episode featured NFL tight end Benjamin Watson, NFL quarterback Luke McCown, Los Angeles Rams star receiver Brandin Cooks and St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, Adam Wainwright. And what do all these pros have in common? Each is a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

“As Christians, we are called to be the light,” said Wainwright, kicking off the 40-minute discussion. “In this time, there is a lot of negativity around. This is time that we can spend encouraging others to make us look different.”

With all professional sports called off for the foreseeable future, the panelists talked candidly about the profound positive impact such a break was having on both their spiritual and family lives.

“This is intentional. God doesn’t do anything by accident, even all the things that you read about in Job,” McCown explained. “God either ordains or allows every circumstance or situation. He ordains it, meaning that He makes it happen. Or He allows it; He gives permission for it to happen. This is just one of those things.”

“I can’t help but think that we have gotten so busy in our lives, whether it’s just going from…
