Collapse of Berlin Wall a ‘triumph’ says Church of Scotland minister who used to guard it

Former soldier Rev Peter Sutton spent four months patrolling the guarded concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided the German city and cut it off from the rest of East Germany from 1961 to 1989.

The minister of St Cuthbert’s Parish Church in Edinburgh was a platoon commander with the 1st Battalion Black Watch.

He was responsible for 30 men whose job it was to protect the British sector of Berlin up until just a few months before the wall was torn down.

Ironically, Rev Sutton, 54, was on UK soil in a heavily fortified army patrol base surrounded by “huge breeze block walls” when he, along with his platoon sergeant, watched one of the most historic and public demonstrations of unity unfold on television.

He said: “I really enjoyed my tour in West Berlin because it was an exciting, vibrant place to be.

“Our role was to ensure that the Russians did not take over the city and make it part of East Germany.

“It was a city full of ‘spies’ and an exciting posting everyone wanted because historically it linked you back to all those War Films and Commando Comics we had grown up with.

“I was stationed there until a few months before the wall fell and although Berlin did not feel dangerous per se, people were still being shot if they came over it.

“You would not climb over it for a joke.”

Francis Chan leaving US to be full-time missionary

He said he wants to “bring relief, share the gospel, and plant churches among” the “ultra poor”.

He revealed his plans to move to Hong Kong next year with this family during his final chapel service at Azusa Pacific University in California on Wednesday.

Chan said the idea to make the big move came during a visit to Myanmar with his family a few months ago.

“We were just with a translator going from hut to hut in these slums, trying to explain to people who Jesus is,” he said.

“These people had never even heard of Him and the eagerness, the way they listened, seeing people get baptised — it was just like, wow, what do we do on a normal day that even compares to this?

“As we got on the plane home, I was like, ‘Honey, I think it’s time to move’.”

Chan said during his sermon that he had some frustrations about Christian leadership in the US.

“I describe it like this: I feel like I’ve been fishing in the same pond my whole life and now there’s like thousands of other fishermen at the same pond, and our lines are getting tangled and everyone’s fighting over stupid things, and one guy tries some new lure and we go, ‘Oh, he caught a fish, let’s all try his method!’ And it just feels like, what are we all doing here?”

“What if I heard of a lake that’s like a five-mile hike away, and no one’s fishing it. And they’re saying, ‘Man, the fish are biting — just throw a hook…

Church of England responds to yoga class ban

Archdeacon Mark Butchers of Barnstaple, who oversees churches in North Devon, told news site Devon Live that Church of England parishes aim to be as welcoming as possible to a wide variety of community groups. However, each parish is allowed to create its own policies for renting a church hall.

“Many parishes are entirely open to hosting yoga exercise classes, emphasising the health benefits for both individuals and communities which yoga offers,” he said.

“Some parishes feel that because yoga has its spiritual roots in Hinduism and Buddhism, it does not fit with Christian spirituality which is rooted in the love of God revealed in Jesus; and so they do not allow traditional yoga classes, but would welcome other health and fitness groups such as Pilates.”

Archdeacon Butchers also said that there are a range of views on the topic with the Church, but they all desire to serve communities “with joy according to the values and beliefs of our Christian faith”.

The yoga ban row began when Rev Nigel Dilkes of Pilton Church told yoga teacher Atsuko Kato that yoga was “not compatible with Christian beliefs” which she asked book the church’s hall last week for a new class.

The President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, Rajan Zed, has urged Rev Dilkes, to “show some maturity” and re-think the issue.

He said the ban was depriving locals of the “valuable…

Rwandan Genocide Survivor: God Used a Christmas Shoebox to Save Me as a Child

Rwandan Genocide Survivor: God Used a Christmas Shoebox to Save Me as a Child

A man who fled the Rwandan genocide as a boy and who saw his life change when he received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox is now traveling the U.S. and encouraging others to fill shoeboxes this holiday season.

Alex Nsengimana’s family was killed during the 1994 genocide that saw as many as 800,000 people murdered. He was bitter and was blaming God, he said.

But during that tragedy, a small box – filled with gifts from Christians – gave him hope. He was 7 at the time.

“Both my grandmother and my uncle, the people who were taking care of me were killed during that war, and I would run from family to family,” he said at Calvary Baptist Church in Longview, Texas, according to KLTV. “By the end of the genocide I was put in an orphanage. And while I was in this orphanage, that’s when Samaritan’s Purse, the mother organization of Operation Christmas Child brought shoeboxes to us.”

Operation Christmas Child is an annual event in which volunteers pack shoeboxes with gifts – with everything from toiletries to toys – for children around the world. Samaritan’s Purse distributes the boxes.

Since the project’s first year in 1993, more than 150 million shoeboxes have been distributed around the world.

“Just having something that we could call our own – that we could play with and that could take our minds off of what…

National Abortion Federation Appoints Episcopal Priest as President and CEO

National Abortion Federation Appoints Episcopal Priest as President and CEO

The National Abortion Federation just named an Episcopal priest as its new head.

In a press release from the NAF last week, it was announced that the Very Reverend Katherine Hancock Ragsdale has been named the pro-abortion organization’s new President and CEO.

Ragsdale was first appointed as the Interim President and CEO of the NAF in September of 2018 and after just over a year in that role, the organization decided to make her a permanent fixture.

According to the press release, Ragsdale – who is openly gay and married to a fellow Episcopal priest named Mally Lloyd – “has been outspoken about abortion rights, LGBTQ equality, and public policy issues affecting women and families throughout her career. She has testified before the U.S. Congress as well as numerous state legislatures about the importance of abortion access and was a featured speaker at the 2004 March for Women’s Lives in Washington, DC.”

Before becoming the organization’s head, Ragsdale spent 17 years on the national board of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice where she preached that abortion was a “blessing.”

“It has been a great privilege to lead this organization for the last year and work alongside the incredible and dedicated NAF Board, staff, and membership,” Ragsdale said, according to the press release. “Abortion providers are some of my personal…

London church denies financial exploitation of members

SPAC Nation has been praised by government ministers for its programmes bringing young people out of a life of crime but an investigation by the Huffington Post claims some pastors at the church have been targeting vulnerable people and asking them to take out loans of up to £5,000 which are then invested in crypto-currency.

The report says often those taking out the loans are left in debt while the pastors are then seen wearing expensive clothing and jewellery.

Toye-Mary Sofidiya, who lives in east London was one of several former members of the church to speak with the online news site.

She said: “I feel like I was targeted. I feel like they took advantage of me. I feel like I was deceived, lied to because they knew I trusted them.”

Responding in the Huffington Post report, Daniel Ogoloma, a spokesman for SPAC Nation, said: “We see it as an intentional smear campaign also based on gossip.

“SPAC Nation has never and will never coerce anyone.

“We have given to many, we have helped countless people, which we will keep doing and will always focus on doing so.”

The report states that all the pastors mentioned by the former members deny the allegations.

Premier has contacted SPAC Nation for further comment.

Mohler, Prominent Southern Baptist, Will Be Nominated to Lead Denomination

Mohler, Prominent Southern Baptist, Will Be Nominated to Lead Denomination

(RNS) — There are seven more months before the next annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention.

But the race for SBC president may already be over, following news that R. Albert Mohler Jr. will likely be nominated to run as the denomination’s next president.

H.B. Charles, pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, a predominantly African American congregation, announced last week that he planned to nominate Mohler.

“We need the zeal to mobilize our resources to spread the gospel,” Charles said in making his announcement on Twitter. “We must do so together. I believe @albertmohler is the man to lead us forward in that unity.”

Mohler, the president of the denomination’s flagship seminary, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, is widely regarded as one of the denomination’s most prominent public intellectuals. He writes widely, has a podcast and appears regularly on TV.

In a statement about his willingness to serve as SBC president, Mohler said he hopes to “unite Southern Baptists,” a group that has long had political and theological divisions within its fold even as it has seen a declining membership as the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.

“We are facing a new era in the world and in the United States, and cultural challenges that will test our conviction,”…

Church items desecrated by IS put on display in London

The display, which includes chalices, crucifixes and a statue, has been formally blessed at Farm Street Catholic Church.

Many of the items have been damaged after the churches they were previously used at were destroyed.

It’s hoped the shrine will allow churchgoers in the UK to draw closer to Christians in Iraq.

Parish priest Father Dominic Robinson SJ said: “I hope very much that the visit of these desecrated sacred items contributes to our sense of communion with our brothers and sisters struggling to practise their faith and shows us the power of hope through the Cross.”

The temporary display has been made possible by Iraq’s Chaldean Archdiocese of Erbil, which gave permission for the loan of the items.

Museum of the Bible Displays Medieval Hebrew Pentateuch

Museum of the Bible Displays Medieval Hebrew Pentateuch

(RNS) — A rare medieval Pentateuch manuscript that had been in private collections for years will go on display Friday (Nov. 8) at the Museum of the Bible.

The volume, which dates to around the year 1000, was acquired two years ago by the Green Collection, headed by billionaire Steve Green of the Hobby Lobby arts and crafts chain.

The Pentateuch, consisting of the five biblical books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, forms the first part of the 24-volume Hebrew Bible. It was written by scholars of the Masoretic tradition who codified the Hebrew Bible and added diacritical marks above and below the Hebrew letters to enable correct pronunciation.

Before the appearance of books, Jews read the Pentateuch from the Torah, a scroll made of parchment or animal skins. Torah scrolls are still read in synagogues, but because they do not contain vowels, readers sometimes consult Pentateuch collections such as the one on display at the Museum of the Bible for the authoritative pronunciation.

There are several other extant volumes of the Pentateuch from the 11th century or earlier in Russia and Israel, said Herschel A. Hepler, associate curator at the museum. The Museum of the Bible named this one the Washington Pentateuch.

The 15-by-24-inch volume, bound in leather with metal bosses, contains two sections. The main section (nearly 500 pages) was written around the year…
