Vatican refuses to hand over evidence of sexual abuse

According to The Times, the British independent inquiry into child sexual abuse was told that the Vatican deemed the requests to be inappropriate.

It’s been reported that Jacqueline Carey, counsel to the inquiry, told a preliminary hearing that the Vatican had been asked to give written evidence about sexual abuse cases in Britain and provide a senior official to present the evidence.

Carey said: “The Holy See confirmed that it would not be providing a witness statement or a witness to attend the hearing. The Holy See considers that the ‘domestic laws and internal proceedings of a foreign sovereign entity are not the proper object for a British inquiry’.”

She added that the Vatican said Archbishop Edward Adams, the papal nuncio to Britain, had diplomatic immunity and could not be forced to testify.

The inquiry has investigated behaviour by some priests in Ealing Abbey in west London, and in the diocese of Birmingham.

Gabrielle Shaw from the National Association for People Abused in Childhood, told The Times: “This is a really disappointing missed opportunity for the Vatican to show its commitment to Catholic survivors in the UK.

“The Vatican has a real chance here to set an example for all faiths by working with and supporting survivors across borders.”

Pope Francis has recently spoken out against sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. In February the Vatican held a…

Department of Education Considers Pulling Funds from Duke-UNC Middle Eastern Studies Program over Pro-Islam Bias

Department of Education Considers Pulling Funds from Duke-UNC Middle Eastern Studies Program over Pro-Islam Bias

It was reported earlier this week by the Christian Post that the Trump administration has threatened to withdraw funding for a Duke University-University of North Carolina Middle East studies program, due to concerns that the program, which receives funding from the Department of Education as a National Resource Center under Title VI, has promoted a pro-Islam bias, failed to highlight the history of persecution faced by adherents of minority religions in the region and lacks a proper emphasis on language study.

Department of Education Assistant Secretary Robert King, in a letter to Duke-UNC CMES gave the consortium until September 22nd to explain how it would alter its program to comply with the requirements of Title VI grants. In King’s letter to the university, he cited a lack of balance and failure to “provide a full understanding of the areas, regions, or countries” focused on by the consortium.

Wrote King, “The Duke-UNC CMES appears to lack balance as it offers very few, if any, programs focused on the historic discrimination faced by, and current circumstances of, religious minorities in the Middle East, including Christians, Jews, Baha’is, Yadizis, Kurds, Druze, and others.”

King’s letter, sent August 29th, went on to state, “Also, in your activities for elementary and secondary students and teachers,…

Faith leaders asked for help by Home Office to reach Windrush generation

The Windrush generation refers to people who were encouraged to come to the UK from mostly Caribbean countries after 1948 to fill the work shortage after World War Two. Years later many were then denied work opportunities and not recognised as citizens because they were never given the correct paperwork or were told they wouldn’t need it.

The Windrush Compensation Scheme by the government aims to contribute to rebuilding trust with communities affected.

Bishop Dr Desmond Jaddoo, deputy presiding bishop at Vision Temple of Praise Church in Birmingham and Chair of the Windrush Movement UK, attended a meeting with Home Office officials on Thursday.

He told Premier: “Many people have lost their jobs, they’ve lost homes, they’ve lost businesses, they’ve suffered health issues, it’s impacted immensely upon families and some have been deported as well.

“People have died as well over the period of time and it’s really to redress some of the impact that the Windrush scandal has had upon people.”

He added that there was a deeper problem other than the more obvious losses: “I want to just make it crystal clear right now, no amount of compensation will ever replace the hurt that people have suffered. So, it is not going to be a quick fix but the compensation does seek to redress, particularly financial, losses that many people have suffered.”

Dr Jaddoo explained that many…

Police Help Hindu Extremist Efforts to Shut Down Christian Worship in India, Sources Say

Police Help Hindu Extremist Efforts to Shut Down Christian Worship in India, Sources Say

HYDERABAD, India, September 25, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Hindu extremists and police in eastern India this month ordered jailed Christians to stop gathering for worship, with the extremists threatening to bring a venomous snake to bite a pastor’s wife, sources said.

The house-church pastor, his family and other Christians had been arrested in Jharkhand state after the hardline Hindus disrupted their worship, beat the pastor and live-streamed hostile commentary on Facebook, with one passerby telling the Hindu extremist leader the Christians “should be sacrificed alive.”

Following the Sept. 8 attack on the house church in Domchanch village, Koderma District, police temporarily locked up and threatened pastor Manohar Prasad Varnwal – whose ability to walk is impaired by polio – along with his wife, children and some church members. Tensions have been high in Jharkhand state since the murder of a 23-year-old Christian mother in the suburbs of capital Ranchi last month.

“The Bajrang Dal, youth militant wing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad [Hindu extremist World Hindu Council] have become active in the state,” area pastor Rajesh Kumar Pandit told Morning Star News. “They are in talks with prominent Hindu leaders and police administration to stop Christian prayers.”

Church leaders have received warnings that scores of Bajrang…

Former Atheist Who ‘Mocked’ Jesus Now Teaches at Christian Seminary: ‘My Eyes Were Opened’

Former Atheist Who ‘Mocked’ Jesus Now Teaches at Christian Seminary: ‘My Eyes Were Opened’

A former international student who moved from China to the United States nearly 20 years ago is testifying how she grew up as an atheist who mocked Jesus – until she heard a message about God’s love.

Today, Hongyi Yang serves as an assistant professor of systematic theology in the women’s studies program at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. But in 2000, she was an international student who had grown up in southwest China believing God was a myth.

When she moved to Texas that year, she had “never seen a copy of the Bible” and had known only “one Christian in all my life,” she wrote in a new column for Baptist Press, the news service of the Southern Baptist Convention.

“I was an atheist at that time. I believed that there was no God who could save us and that we must strive for success by our own ability, diligence and luck,” she wrote.

In Texas, she was surrounded by Christians who invited her to church. Yet she refused their invitation “without hesitation.”

“I had an attitude of contempt toward Christianity,” she wrote. “… I also mocked Christianity. I thought it is so humiliating to worship a God who was crucified on a cross. This is exactly what 1 Corinthians says, that ‘a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to…

Christian charity ‘shocked but unsurprised’ as children as young as seven watching pornography

It’s been responding to a new report which should children as young as seven are accessing adult material.

In the largest ever study of its kind, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) also found over half of 11 to 13 year olds have seen it at some point.

David Austin, chief executive of the BBFC, said: “Pornography is currently one click away for children of all ages in the UK, and this research supports the growing body of evidence that it is affecting the way young people understand healthy relationships, sex, body image and consent.

“The research also shows that when young children – in some cases as young as seven or eight years old – first see pornography online, it is most commonly not on purpose.”

The government has agreed to implement plans for age verification tools for online pornography but is yet to carry it out.

CARE’s Communications Manager, James Mildred said: “In this context, age-verification on pornographic sites is an absolute must.

“We need to make sure our young people are given the same level of protection online as they are offline.

“Of course, we know age-verification is not a silver bullet and needs to be complemented by other measures and parents have a particularly important role to play in making sure they are aware of the dangers and the steps to take to protect children online.

“The Digital Economy Act made provisions for an…

The latest on impeachment: Two biblical imperatives

Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced this week that the House of Representatives would initiate a formal impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.

Mr. Trump could become only the fourth president in American history to face impeachment. Presidents Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were both impeached by the House but acquitted by the Senate. President Nixon resigned as the House was preparing an impeachment vote.

This announcement is both historic and momentous. In his introduction to Impeachment: An American History, Jeffrey A. Engle writes that impeachment “disrupts the American political landscape as few other events do, leaving scars forever dimming the political careers for all involved.”

How does impeachment work?

The Wall Street Journal explains that the impeachment process “generally includes a House investigation, hearings, and a markup of articles of impeachment, or written accusations.” Traditionally, such articles have been drafted by the Judiciary Committee.

Once cleared by that committee, they are immediately considered on the House floor. A simple majority is required for impeachment.

Three types of conduct are typically seen as constituting grounds for impeachment: abusing or exceeding the powers of the office, behavior incompatible with the function or purpose of the office, or misusing the office for an improper purpose or for personal gain.

If the House impeaches Mr. Trump, House managers will then be selected to make their case before the Senate. A two-thirds majority is required to convict the president and remove him from office.

However, as CNN notes, Senate Republicans likely have the votes to easily dismiss the charges. With the current party split, twenty Republicans would have to join every Democrat in the Senate in voting to remove the president.

The process could take months. Rep. Jerry Nadler, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, says he hopes to conclude their work…

Bishop laments Boris Johnson’s ‘destructive and distressing’ language

Rt Rev Nick Baines, who represents the Church of England on Brexit, issued a statement after Boris Johnson batted away questions about his use of language in the House of Commons.

Labour’s Paula Sherriff initially criticised Mr Johnson for his repeated use of “surrender act” when describing legislation designed to prevent ministers forcing through a no-deal Brexit on 31 October.

She warned against using such language and mentioned murdered MP Jo Cox before highlighting that many of her colleagues are subjected to death threats and abuse.

But Mr Johnson labelled her remarks “humbug”, which prompted an angry response in the chamber – with shouts of “shame” emerging.

The Prime Minister later suggested the best way to honour Jo Cox was to get Brexit done and unite the country.

Speaker John Bercow said the culture in the Commons on Wednesday was “toxic”, adding it was “worse than any I have known in my 22 years in the House”.

REX

Addressing the scenes in parliament, Bishop Nick said: “The language used in the House of Commons last night is probably unprecedented. Drawing the name of a murdered MP into the fight was, at the very least, questionable. To describe the contribution of female MPs, pleading with the PM to moderate his language in the light of violence and death threats, as ‘humbug’ is appalling.

“The Prime Minister has…

Admitting and starting to replant or revitalize can be hard for churches. Today we cover seven reasons many churches fail to take the needed action.

Episode Highlights:

  • Money in the bank can be a huge hindrance to revitalization.
  • As long as churches can pay their bills, they are often hesitant to ask for help.
  • When you rely too much on the personality of the pastor, you won’t rely enough on the Holy Spirit.
  • “If only we had…” is an excuse and a deflection churches use when they refuse to address problems.

The seven reasons we discuss are:

  1. “There is money in the bank.”
  2. “The magic bullet pastor is out there somewhere.”
  3. “Our methods are sound.”
  4. “We are not the problem.”
  5. “We can get it done tomorrow.”
  6. “We still have visitors.”
  7. “We know another church like us that turned around.”

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is committed to reversing this trend by decreasing the death rate of existing churches while simultaneously increasing the birth rate of new churches. Texas High School Football Player Saves Mom, Child Trapped in Floodwaters: ‘I Had to Make Sure Two of God’s Children Didn’t Die’

Texas High School Football Player Saves Mom, Child Trapped in Floodwaters: ‘I Had to Make Sure Two of God’s Children Didn’t Die’

High school football player Jayden Payne saved lives earlier this week when he rescued a mom and her toddler from the raging waters of Tropical Depression Imelda, as reported by Faithwire.

Through a growing storm that caused dangerous and impassable roadways, Vinitta Williams was attempting to get her 2-year-old daughter Ava safely home from daycare. But as the rain pounded harder, her car was sent off the road and into a flooded drainage ditch near Aldine High School – Jayden’s school.

Jayden and his mother, Cynthia Payne, saw the mother struggle to get out of her sinking car.

“The whole street was just submerged with water,” Jayden recalled in an interview.

“I hear my mom screaming, ‘No, no! Someone stop her! Get out of the car! Get out of the car!’ I just started seeing it sink,” he explained.

Williams told KHOU that as the car began to sink, she struggled to open its door.

“That’s when I really lost it,” Williams told the news outlet. “I was like, ‘Oh my God! Are we going to die in here?’ I grabbed my baby, and I started kicking and pulling and kicking and pulling and somehow, it opened.”

But Williams and Ava were not out of danger yet. The rushing water was pulling both under. Williams held her daughter above her head, but she still couldn’t make progress…
