Anne Graham Lotz, a Year after Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Says Joy ‘Never Left Me’

(RNS) — Anne Graham Lotz’s journey has been a tough one lately: A year ago, three years after the death of her husband and six months after the funeral of her famous evangelist father, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

But the 71-year-old Bible teacher and daughter of Billy Graham says she has refused to give up hope and her faith remains a constant.

“The Christian life is so much more than just being saved from hell and is so much more than just going to heaven — praise God for both of those things,” she said. “It’s more than just a checklist of do’s and don’ts. It’s a relationship that’s vibrant and alive and it’s sufficient to carry you through the hardest things.”

As she completes her cancer treatment this week, Lotz is free again to travel for public appearances — including a visit to the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Oct. 3 — as she promotes her latest book, “Jesus in Me: Experiencing the Holy Spirit as a Constant Companion.”

Lotz, who belongs to a church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention but calls herself simply a “follower of Jesus,” talked to Religion News Service on Monday (Sept. 23) about facing cancer, being a widow and an orphan, and defining the Holy Spirit.

The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Police reviewing admissions by former priest over IRA past

There have been calls to extradite Patrick Ryan who has admitted to obtaining money and bomb components for the IRA.

He told BBC Spotlight he travelled around the world raising money for the organisation and admitted discovering timers which made it easier for the IRA to arm bombs without being killed themselves.

Police Service of Northern Ireland Chief Constable Simon Byrne was asked whether he is seeking extradition proceedings against Mr Ryan in the Republic.

Speaking at the Cross Border Organised Crime Conference in Co Cavan, Mr Bryne said: “I think it’s too early to say.

“As you would expect we have a specific line of inquiry we’ve now got to examine.

“I’ve got one of our assistant chiefs looking at that today to see if there are fresh lines of inquiry that we would then need to review about decisions made in the past.

“Clearly when new information comes in we need to see does it corroborate what we already know, and if we have to go to the point of seeking extradition that’s a conversation for (Garda chief Drew Harris) and his colleagues.”

Unionists have called for the Irish Government to apologise for refusing to extradite Mr Ryan in 1988.

Ulster Unionist councillor Danny Kinahan said that if Mr Ryan lives in the Republic, it will be an opportunity for Dublin to “right a wrong”.

Doctor Performs Abortion on Wrong Woman Who Wanted to Keep Her Baby

Doctor Performs Abortion on Wrong Woman Who Wanted to Keep Her Baby

A doctor and nurse in Seoul, South Korea, performed an abortion on the wrong woman in a tragic mix-up that resulted in both being criminally charged.

The woman, who is from Vietnam, was six weeks pregnant when she went to the Seoul hospital in August for a checkup. She was prescribed nutritional supplements, but neither the nurse nor the doctor checked her identity or medical charts and wrongfully performed an abortion on her, the Korea Herald reported.

When the woman entered the delivery room, the nurse injected her with anesthesia instead of with a nutritional supplement, and the doctor followed by conducting an abortion. The hospital apparently conducts abortions, deliveries and injections in the same hospital room, the newspaper said.

Tragically, the woman didn’t know her baby had been killed until the next day when she experienced a bloody discharge and returned to the hospital, where she was told the baby had been aborted.

Abortion in South Korea is legal only in cases of rape, incest and to save the mother’s life, although the country’s Supreme Court struck down the restrictions earlier this year. Abortion in other cases is scheduled to be legalized by Jan. 1, 2021.

Police considered charging the doctor and nurse with conducting an abortion without consent but instead settled on other charges.

“The police charged the doctor and nurse on…

UN investigator describes violence against Nigerian Christians as a ‘pressure cooker of injustice’

Agnes Callamard from the UN investigated misdemeanors particularly in the North East, Middle Belt and South of the country, noting “the ethno-religious dimensions of the conflict and the many toxic rhetoric that seek to explains and justify the killings.”

Archbishop Benjamin Kwashi (pictured), the head of the Diocese of Jos, has also written in his book: “Nigeria is being described as the largest killing ground for Christians in the world today. First Boko Haram and now Fulani militants. The plan we see being executed is to wipe Christianity from the face of northern Nigeria.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) says that in Kaduna state more than 500 Christians have been abducted in the past four years.

“Pastors and church members are being kidnapped, huge sums of money are being demanded, and nothing has been done by the Nigerian government to halt the situation,” Kaduna state CAN Chairman Joseph Hayap told the Christian Post.

In late August, Fulani herdsmen killed a Pentecostal pastor and abducted a Baptist pastor in Kaduna.

Fulani herdsmen also killed five Christians and destroyed homes in the district of Kiri.

Since 2011, an estimated 11,000 people have been killed in conflict featuring Fulani militia. The death toll is said to be six times higher than that caused by Boko Haram terrorists.

This growing conflict is often characterised in the West…

Weeks-Old Baby Rescued by National Guard after Puerto Rico Is Struck by Earthquake, Tropical Storm

Weeks-Old Baby Rescued by National Guard after Puerto Rico Is Struck by Earthquake, Tropical Storm

As it prepared for the potential devastation of an impending hurricane, the nation of Puerto Rico has been hit with an additional natural disaster in the form of a large earthquake.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake registered at a sizeable 6.0 magnitude on the Richter scale, with the epicenter being located just over 40 miles northwest of the island.

At least seven aftershocks were felt at over 4.0 magnitude in the hour following the earthquake – thankfully, however, no serious damage to infrastructure has been reported at this point, and no injuries have been logged.

“We hope everyone is well. … It is important to remain calm during these natural events to guarantee security,” Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vazquez tweeted Monday, according to ABC News.

The Puerto Rico government ordered a nationwide shutdown of schools on Tuesday in anticipation of Hurricane Karen, which has now been downgraded to a tropical storm. Though the threat to life has been lowered significantly, officials from both Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have continued to issue public safety warnings.

“Don’t take the storm lightly,” U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr. told CBS News. “It will start to throw massive rain.”

Indeed, a dramatic rescue occurred on the island of Vieques, with Puerto Rico’s National Guard completing a…

Huge Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Hits Kashmir Region Killing at Least 19

Huge Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Hits Kashmir Region Killing at Least 19

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale has rocked Pakistan, causing the deaths of at least 19 people. The epicenter of the shock was felt very close to the city of Mirpur, in the contested region of Kashmir.

Images have emerged of houses completely destroyed and main highways cracked down the middle. While final numbers on the dead and injured have not yet been determined, it is understood that children are among the victims, according to the BBC.

Kashmir is a contended territory with both Pakistani and Indian regions and has recently fallen victim to a military offensive at the hands of Indian troops. The village of Sahankikri was one of the worst affected, with almost all the 400 houses suffering damage. “We are shelterless now,” said local resident Shamraiz Akhtar, according to the Guardian.

“I was sitting in my shop when suddenly the walls started swaying,” another victim explained. “I knew that it is a strong earthquake. The moment I came out of my shop, its roof caved in.”

Despite the severity of the quake, the chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NSMA) hinted at a lower death toll and urged calm.

“I can confirm 10 deaths and the number of wounded is 100,” Lieutenant General Mohammad Afzal detailed. “Things are under control.”

“Our whole concentration right now is to accelerate the rescue operation,”…

Chinese churches ordered to remove Ten Commandments

According to Bitter Winter, a magazine covering religious freedom and human rights in China, churches belonging to the country’s state-run “Three-Self Patriotic Movement” protestant denomination have been ordered to replace displays of the Decalogue with sayings of the Chinese president.

The new order comes reportedly after Three-Self churches were initially told to remove the First Commandment, “You shall have no gods before me,” as Jinping disagreed with it.

Reports indicate that those who have refused to remove any or all of the Ten Commandments have been imprisoned, with leaders and worshippers harassed even in churches that complied with the instruction.

Instead of core Christian values, the displays now preach Communist party ideology, such as, “Guard against the infiltration of Western ideology, and consciously resist the influence of extremist thought.”

At the same time, the Communist party has launched a crackdown on so-called ‘home churches’ which are outside of state control.

An anonymous source told the magazine that the Communist party is attempting to become a God-like figure.

They said: “The government’s first step is to prohibit religious couplets.

“Then it dismantles crosses and…orders the national flag and ‘core socialist values’ to be placed in churches.”

In its report earlier this year, the United States Commission on International Religious…

Students around the World Set to Pray Together for ‘See You at the Pole’ Event

Students around the World Set to Pray Together for ‘See You at the Pole’ Event

An estimated one million students from around the world will gather around flag poles on Wednesday, Sept. 25 this year as part of the annual ‘See You at the Pole’ event.

See You at the Pole is a worldwide event that encourages students to pray together at their schools.

This year’s theme is based on 2 Chronicles 7:14, “… if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Organized and led by students, SYATP is “about one simple thing—STUDENTS in PRAYER.” Students can participate by praying on Sept. 25 at 7:00 AM their local time or pray in unique ways, places, and times during the Global Week of Student Prayer, which is Sept. 22-Sept. 28.

Each school’s SYATP vary. Leaders can choose to include student-led worship, Bible readings, prayer in large and small groups, or even have a student give a message in their time gathered around the flagpole.

To publicize the event, students can put up posters, text their friends, or purchase SYATP promotional resources. Anyone interested in hosting the event at their school can also download a planning guide to ensure SYATP goes without a hitch. Because the event is student-led, before school hours, and outside of a school building, students have…

Harry and Meghan and baby Archie meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu

The four-month-old royal made his first appearance of Harry and Meghan’s Africa tour by posing with one of the heroes of the anti-Apartheid movement as he was held by his proud parents.

Archie was the centre of attention as the group, which included the archbishop’s daughter Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe.

The archbishop’s daughter also joked about his comfort in front of the camera, saying: “You like the ladies. He’s going to be a ladies man.”

The veteran Nobel Peace Prize winner, who was effectively the leader of the liberation struggle during Nelson Mandela’s long imprisonment, said he was “thrilled by the “rare privilege and honour” to meet the royals.

The 87-year-old cleric spent half an hour with the couple and Archie at the historic premises of his Legacy Foundation in Cape Town, the Old Granary, a restored centuries old edifice built by slaves.

For the informal meeting Meghan sat with Archie on her lap and Harry beside her, while the retired archbishop and his daughter sat opposite them.

The group laughed as they watched the duchess take her son’s arms and dance with the young royal who appeared to be wearing dungarees, a top and socks.

Footage of Meghan and Harry making their way to see the elderly statesman has been posted on the couple’s official Instagram account.

Archie is carried by Meghan and the four-month-old is seen smiling and laughing as the Sussexes…

Three sisters who fought the Nazis: How compassion changes those who change the world

NOTE: The announced impeachment inquiry into President Trump is an evolving story I plan to make the focus of tomorrow’s Daily Article.

There is something in us that wants to help people who need help.

Time tells the remarkable and sometimes gruesome story of three sisters who fought the Nazis as part of the Dutch resistance in World War II. One explained why she became involved in the conflict: “While I was biking, I saw Germans picking up innocent people from the streets, putting them against a wall and shooting them. I was forced to watch, which aroused such an enormous anger in me, such a disgust. . . .

“You can have any political conviction or be totally against war, but at that moment you are just a human being confronted with something very cruel. Shooting innocent people is murder. If you experience something like this, you’ll find it justified to act against it.”

Two sisters help Iranian immigrant

Hassan Nezhadessivandi has spent the last five years distributing Express, a publication of the Washington Post. Mr. Nezhadessivandi immigrated from Iran in 1978 to go to college, but unrest in his homeland cut off his funds. He has been working odd jobs for many years to support himself.

He stood at the same spot in Washington, DC, for four hours every morning, passing out the newspaper to the commuters who passed by. He did his job in the snow, rain, or heat.

When the Post announced last Wednesday that the last copy of Express would be distributed the next day, many of the commuters realized they would no longer see Hassan. At the age of sixty-five, he was not sure how he would make ends meet.

Then, two sisters started a GoFundMe account for him. They spread the word by placing a poster board at the station, printing fliers, and sharing the link on social media. The fund has raised nearly fifteen thousand dollars so far.

“I have already been given a taste of God”

Part of being made…
