Pews to be turned into chopping boards

Around 20 pews from St Matthews in Exeter have been given to the Landworks charity in Devon.

The charity said the pews would be made into chopping boards, cookbook holders, bowls, plates, garden benches and more.

Some will be kept as seats for quiet reflection.

Rev Matt Clayton from St Matthews told Premier this is a great evangelistic opportunity.

“We really believe that there is hope for people that are on the margins of society. There is real transition that can happen if we give them a chance to prove themselves and give them a great start,” he said.

“If we don’t get out there and tell them that they are loved, that we believe there is a hope for them, that they do have a place in the Church, that this can be a church that they can call home, we’ve failed. We haven’t done the Great Commission, we haven’t gone out there and proclaimed Jesus.”

The renovation work at St Matthews is part of a £1.3m Diocese of Exeter project to reach out to Exeter’s 30,000 students and build links with local homeless charities and organisations working with prisoners and ex-offenders.

The money has come from the Church of England’s Strategic Development Fund.

The St Matthews congregation is currently meeting in the church hall and hopes to move back into the refurbished church building in time for a launch at the end of the university’s Freshers’ Week on 29 September.

Ezekiel Elliott and Hurricane Dorian: The localization of compassion

House Speaker Tip O’Neill famously observed that “all politics is local.” He was right about more than politics.

Wednesday, as the national media continued reporting on Hurricane Dorian, the lead story in the local Dallas news was the signing of Ezekiel Elliott by the Cowboys. That same day, the lead headline in the Los Angeles Times focused on the dive boat tragedy off the Southern California coast. Today’s Midland Reporter-Telegram continues to report on the aftermath of Saturday’s shooting in their community.

I suspect citizens in Great Britain are following the latest on Brexit more closely than most of us in America. The pope’s travels in Africa are being reported more thoroughly there than here. Wildfires in Bolivia are receiving little attention in the US.

Dorian has been in the news for more than a week now. Unfortunately, many of us are suffering from compassion fatigue after watching the hurricane march slowly across the ocean.

But if you live in North Carolina or have family there, the storm is an existential threat to you. Dorian is brushing their coast this morning, lashing the area with rain, strong winds, and storm surges. The hurricane is causing floods in parts of the Carolinas and has left more than 343,000 people without power in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

If my loved ones were among the thousands still missing in the Bahamas, Dorian’s destruction would be agonizing for me. More than 1,500 Americans are still “unaccounted for” in Southeast Asia after the Vietnam War. For their families, the war continues.

Limiting our horizon to our backyard

News organizations know the importance of reporting what we want to read and hear. They focus on local stories because local stories impact their readers most directly.

This localization of compassion is understandable. Finite human souls cannot carry the grief and suffering of the entire world for even a moment, much…

Pope Francis consoles HIV-infected mothers and children in Mozambique

Francis received a raucous welcome at both a medical centre specialising in Aids treatment and a rain-soaked sports stadium full of singing and dancing followers.

At the Mass, Francis urged an estimated 60,000 Mozambicans to continue on the path of post-civil war reconciliation.

But he warned of the dangers of corruption and the injustices committed when public officials claim to help the poor but have personal interests at heart.

“Mozambique is a land of abundant natural and cultural riches, yet paradoxically, great numbers of its people live below the poverty line,” Francis told the faithful at Mass in the Zimpeto stadium.

“And at times it seems that those who approach with the alleged desire to help have other interests. Sadly, this happens with brothers and sisters of the same land, who let themselves be corrupted.”

Mozambique is ranked among the most corrupt countries by Transparency International, which cites recent estimates that corruption cost Mozambique some 4.9 billion dollars from 2002-2014.

More recently, Mozambique plunged into financial crisis in 2016 after a scandal came to light involving some 2 billion dollars in undisclosed government-guaranteed loans that were ostensibly meant to acquire fishing vessels but instead went to three state security services to buy weapons.

BBC gets more than 1,200 complaints over Songs of Praise gay wedding

Viewers complained that featuring a same-sex wedding on the show was offensive to Christians.

The episode called Faith and Marriage aired on BBC 1 on 18th August.

The episode included the wedding of Jamie Wallace and Ian McDowall at the Rutherglen United Reformed Church in Glasgow.

The pair were the first same-sex couple to marry at the church after the local congregation gave its support.

Speaking on Songs of Praise Wallace explained: “Jesus preaches about love, inclusion, kindness, compassion.

“A good lady who comes to this church told us in one of our discussions, people will change, and don’t underestimate older people, either. They just need to think about it, and they’ll get there one day.”

The BBC has stood by its decision.

BBC

Songs of Praise executive producer Cat Lewis said: “We understand this is a sensitive subject, but the United Reformed Church is the sixth biggest in the country and as Britain’s only Christian TV series, it is very important we reflect all aspects of the faith.”

A BBC spokesman said: “Songs of Praise tells the stories of Christians across all denominations in the UK and in so doing, aims to reflect the balance of opinions on different issues.

“We featured the wedding of James and Ian to find out what it meant to them as Christians, to be able to take their vows in church.”

The BBC also received…

Facebook Labels Pro-Life Videos ‘False News,’ Limits Their Distribution

Facebook Labels Pro-Life Videos ‘False News,’ Limits Their Distribution

A prominent pro-life group is accusing Facebook of bias after it placed restrictions on the organization’s content and labeled as “false news” the claim that “abortion is never medically necessary.”

Live Action – one of the nation’s most well-known and popular pro-life groups – says it received a message from Facebook Aug. 30 stating, “Your page has violations.” Facebook flagged a video of a speech from Live Action founder and president Lila Rose.

“Your page has reduced distribution and other restrictions because of repeated sharing of false news,” the message from Facebook said. “People will also be able to see if a page has a history of sharing false news.”

In the speech, Rose said, “If you talk to a doctor who is not indoctrinated by leftist talking points… you will discover that abortion – which is defined as the direct and intentional killing of an embryo, a fetus, a baby in the womb – is not a medical treatment.” Abortion, she said in the speech, is “never medically necessary.”

Two “independent” fact-checkers cited by Facebook said Rose’s claim is wrong and that “certain life-threatening conditions during pregnancy can make abortion medically necessary to save the mother’s life.” The fact-checkers are two pro-choice doctors who have performed abortions: Daniel Grossman and Robyn…

Widowed Mother of Seven Homeless When Muslim In-Laws Learn She Is Christian

Widowed Mother of Seven Homeless When Muslim In-Laws Learn She Is Christian

NAIROBI, Kenya, September 4, 2019 (Morning Star News) – The 8-year-old boy didn’t realize that telling his Muslim relatives how much he enjoyed a church choir would cause them to attack his family.

The seventh and youngest child of 54-year-old Lezia Nakayiza, widowed since September 2018, he didn’t know that his family was keeping their faith secret in Kasenge village, Wakiso District, in central Uganda near the capital city of Kampala.

“I could not share my faith with the brothers of my husband as well as the relatives who are radical Muslims,” Nakayiza told Morning Star News by phone. “In June my younger son told one of the relatives of the wonderful choir at church, and that we have been attending the church since March. This was the beginning of our persecution.”

Word began to spread that relatives of her late husband, Sheik Kiita Suleiman, were planning to punish her for leaving Islam.

“A Christian neighbor informed me that the family was planning to attack us,” Nakayiza said.

They struck on June 20.

“At around 8 p.m. by the light from moonlight, I peeped through the window and saw many people approaching our house with sticks and other weapons with loud noise from the animals’ shed,” she said, adding that she heard them shouting, “Away with this infidel!”

As they tried to break through the main door,…

Benny Hinn Renounces Prosperity Theology: ‘The Gospel Is Not for Sale’

Benny Hinn Renounces Prosperity Theology: ‘The Gospel Is Not for Sale’

Benny Hinn, who rose to prominence as one of the world’s most well-known preachers of the so-called prosperity gospel, said this week he is “correcting” his views and no longer believes the health-and-wealth theology he formerly espoused.

Hinn said during the Sept. 2 broadcast of Your LoveWorld that the “gospel is not for sale.”

“I’m correcting my own theology, and you all need to know it,” he said. “… Because when I read the Bible now, I don’t see the Bible in the same eyes I saw the Bible 20 years ago.”

Prosperity theology promotes the idea that God wants all Christians to be wealthy and healthy. According to this belief, God’s blessings are released when Christians donate money.

Hinn and other prosperity gospel televangelists were the subject of a 2007 U.S. Senate committee probe examining their financial records. As Christian Headlines previously reported, one of those televangelists, Joyce Meyer, said earlier this year she now rejects much of the prosperity theology she formerly taught. Hinn is the second preacher from that group to renounce the movement’s core beliefs.

“I don’t want to hurt my friends whom I love – who believe things I don’t believe anymore,” Hinn said. “And I will tell you now something that is going to shock you. I think it’s an offense to the Lord. It’s an offense to say give $1,000 –…

Christian Wedding Venue Owner Denies Interracial Couple, Apologizes after Studying Scripture

Christian Wedding Venue Owner Denies Interracial Couple, Apologizes after Studying Scripture

A Mississippi wedding venue, Boone’s Camp Event Hall, has apologized for canceling an interracial couple’s wedding based on their biblical beliefs.

The couple had been working with the venue for about a week when they received a message indicating that Boone’s Camp would not allow them to marry “because of [their] beliefs,” according to the Christian Post.

When LaKambria Welch found out that her brother, who is black, and his white fiancee were denied services at the venue, she drove to the location to ask why and recorded the conversation with a woman many believe to be the owner of the venue, Donna Russell.

“First of all, we don’t do gay weddings or mixed race, because of our Christian race, I mean, our Christian belief,” the woman said in the video.

“Ok, we’re Christians as well,” Welch replied before asking, “So what in the Bible tells you that—?”

“Well, I don’t want to argue my faith,” the woman said. “We just don’t participate…we just choose not to.”

The video, which went viral with 2 million views, prompted a story with Deep South Voice and a follow up with the Washington Post.

A few days later, the Washington Post explained that the owner of the venue apologized on Facebook after spending time in the Bible and talking with her pastor.

“As a child growing up, our racial…

Boy Who Was Thrown Off Mall of America Balcony Finally Returns Home

Boy Who Was Thrown Off Mall of America Balcony Finally Returns Home

Nearly five months after being thrown off a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America in Minnesota, 5-year-old Landen Hoffman is finally home.

The wonderful news was shared by the youngster’s family on a GoFundMe page dedicated to raising funds to help aid his recovery. After Hoffman was thrown some 40 feet from a balcony back in April, medics were convinced that he would suffer from life-long brain damage as a result.

Incredibly, however, the child has made a full and complete recovery, after the parents pleaded for prayer in the days and weeks following the incident — truly a work of God! “We are pleased to share that our son completed his inpatient rehabilitation and is now home,” the Hoffman’s said in a statement posted to GoFundMe. “We are so thankful, and we rejoice in the Lord’s blessings to our family.”

“We continue to ask that His healing powers guide us and our son’s care team as we enter the next phase of recovery, which includes continued outpatient rehabilitation for multiple injuries and adjusting to life back at home and school,” they added.

The parents thanked all of those who had poured out prayers for Landen, who sustained severe head trauma and several broken bones when he was attacked by a 24-year-old man. The suspect subsequently pleaded guilty to attempted premeditated first-degree murder and was sentenced to 19 years in…
