Australian PM Says Faith-Based Schools Have the Right to Choose Students Based on Sexual Orientation – Urban Christian News

Faith-based schools in Australia can already legally select students based on sexual orientation, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said as a debate raged over a controversial religious freedom proposal to enshrine that right in federal law leaked this week.

A Fairfax Media report revealed late Tuesday that a religious freedom review panel chaired by former Liberal minister Phillip Ruddock recommends guaranteeing the right of faith-based schools to choose students who uphold their religious convictions in federal law to ensure a consistent national approach.

“There is a wide variety of religious schools in Australia and … to some school communities, cultivating an environment and ethos which conforms to their religious beliefs is of paramount importance,” the report says, according to Fairfax media.

“To the extent that this can be done in the context of appropriate safeguards for the rights and mental health of the child, the panel accepts their right to select, or preference, students who uphold the religious convictions of that school community,” it continues.

According to news.com.au, some states in Australia already allow schools to choose members of their school community on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or relationship status. There are also some commonwealth laws that allow faith-based schools to do this as well.

“We’re not proposing to change that law to take away that existing arrangement,” Morrison told reporters this week.

Gay rights advocates and members of the opposition Labor Party are not happy with the proposal, arguing that the…

The Anglican leader will mark the end of his ministry during a Holy Communion service at Canterbury Cathedral on 12th May 2019.

“May he and Margaret [his wife] be assured of our prayers as they move into this next stage of their lives.”

Bishop Trevor was appointed Bishop of Dover and Bishop in Canterbury in 2010. He previously served as Bishop of Basingstoke for eight years.

“One of the great joys for me is confirmation.

“I love it: the privilege to listen, the privilege to serve and the sheer joy of sharing in the experience of a God searching out and loving people.

“If I’ve been able in any small way to help in that journey for people, then I thank God.”

Kim Jong Un Invites the Pope to North Korea despite Christian Persecution

The office of South Korean President Moon Jae-in announced on Tuesday that Pope Francis will be invited to Pyongyang, North Korea to meet with Dictator Kim Jong Un.

A Blue House spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom, reports that Francis will receive this invitation next week when Moon, also a Catholic, visits the Vatican.

Moon will visit the Vatican on October 17 and 18 and is set to be received by the pope at the Vatican Apostolic Palace on the second day.

According to Channel News Asia, Kim said, “President Moon will visit the Vatican on Oct. 17 and 18 to reaffirm its blessing and support for peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.”

According to Moon’s office, Kim told him last month during their meeting that Pope Francis would be “enthusiastically” welcomed into North Korea, despite the countries negative record with religious persecution.

The Communist nation is known for its aggressive repression of religious freedom and restrictions on what ‘illegal religious activities.’ According to the Christian Post, all worship must be state sanctioned, and if it is not it must be conducted in secrecy due to the fear of arrest.

Bible Answer Man Responds to Claim That King James Bible Controls People, Takes Away Their Rights

(Screenshot: Facebook/Bible Answer Man)“Bible Answer Man” Hank Hanegraaff answering questions in a Facebook clip uploaded on October 8, 2018.

“Bible Answer Man” Hank Hanegraaff shot down a nonbeliever’s argument that the King James Version of the Bible has been used to control people and take away their rights.

Hanegraaff, an Eastern Orthodox radio talk-show host who leads the Christian Research Institute, heard in a clip posted on Facebook on Monday from a woman who explained that her nonbeliever roommate believes that the KJV was used as “propaganda” to suppress people and their rights.

Hanegraaff said that although the argument is often made in culture, “it bares [sic] no semblance to reality whatsoever.”

“There are lots of translations, and the translations have errors. But we today have what is called the science of textual criticism, by which we can compare one translation with another translation, and by doing that we can get back to the autograph,” he said.

“The embarrassment of riches as respect to translations helps us get back to the originals.”

The “Bible Answer Man” said that whichever version of the Bible one takes into account, the message from God is not that He is a “killjoy to gays and lesbians,” rather that He “sets parameters around human beings in…

The Seven Traits of a Healthy Church Leader

I am encouraged.

I am really hopeful.

I see more signs of healthy church leaders today than I have seen at any point in my 30 years of ministry. This trend portends well for the future health of our congregations. Healthy church leaders will lead churches to greater health.

The seven traits presume foundational issues such as an affirmation of the truthfulness of the Bible, the exclusivity of the gospel, and the work of the Holy Spirt. Emanating from these foundational issues are key leadership traits. If a leader has all of the following seven traits, it is likely that leader will lead the congregation to greater health.

  1. They embrace change. Healthy leaders do not fear change. To the contrary, they embrace it. They understand the constant power and hope of the gospel only presents opportunities. They don’t complain about change; they get excited about it.
  2. They have a healthy grasp of history. Healthy church leaders are grateful for the past; but they do not dwell there. They take the lessons and the leaders of the past as steps to move forward in the future. Their attitude toward the past is not nostalgia. Rather, they respect the past without revering the past.
  3. They constantly evaluate methodologies. These leaders are not program-driven, building-driven, or procedure-driven. They are constantly asking how they and their churches can do better. They don’t do things the way they’ve always done them. They constantly and persistently evaluate everything.
  4. They intentionally interact with…

Edinburgh minister named as new church moderator

Reverend Colin Sinclair will succeed the Rt Rev Susan Brown in the role next year.

Rev Sinclair, originally from Glasgow, is the minister for Palmerston Place Church in Edinburgh.

The Stirling University economics graduate, who has worked for decades with Scripture Union, said he was honoured to take up the role.

He said: “I am honoured to be selected for this opportunity to represent the Church of Scotland nationally and internationally.

“It will be a pleasure to encourage church members in their faith and to see the impact of their faith in communities across our country.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed being a parish minister and despite the challenges we face I believe the Christian Faith is still relevant to Scotland.

“Our message is still Good News and it still changes lives.”

Andrew Milligan/PA Wire

Rev Sinclair first became interested in the Christian faith as a pupil at Glasgow Academy when, to escape getting into trouble after a prefect saw him taking the wrong staircase, he dodged into a room where a Scripture Union camp video was showing.

A keen rugby player at university, it was also while a student that he took a holiday job as a film extra playing a soldier in the 1975 comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Through his work with Scripture Union he spent three years travelling…

Why did Nikki Haley resign as UN Ambassador?

The big news this morning is Nikki Haley’s decision to resign as US Ambassador to the United Nations. She reportedly suggested the idea to President Trump six months ago and plans to make her resignation effective at the end of the year.

Why is she leaving a position of such influence?

“It’s been eight years of intense time”

The president was effusive in his praise: “She’s done a fantastic job and we’ve done a fantastic job together. We’ve solved a lot of problems and we’re in the process of solving a lot of problems.”

However, skeptics immediately began speculating about the “real reasons” for Ambassador Haley’s decision. While some have pointed to the possibility that she might run for president in 2020, she stated clearly: “I can promise you what I’ll be doing is campaigning for this one [pointing to President Trump].”

Others are suggesting that her role has become limited since John Bolton took over as national security adviser. Critics have questioned her use of private airplanes last year. And some wonder if financial considerations were a factor since she has one child in college and another headed there soon.

Ambassador Haley’s explanation is simple: “It’s been eight years of intense time,” referring to her tenure as governor of South Carolina prior to joining the administration. She wants the president to have “the strongest person to fight” and believes “it’s good to rotate in other people who can put that same energy and power into it.”

It’s worth noting that her two-year tenure is exactly the average for a UN ambassador: Since the position was created in 1946, there have been thirty-six people to hold the office.

Hurricane Michael and political storms

In other news, Hurricane Michael is expected to make landfall over the Florida Panhandle later today. Forecasters predict “a dangerous storm surge, flooding rainfall and damaging winds.” Total damage and economic impact in the US…

Christian bakery wins appeal in Supreme Court ‘gay cake’ case

Daniel McCArthur, general manager of Ashers bakery in Belfast, and his wife Amy have been in legal battle with gay rights activist Gareth Lee since 2014, when he asked them to ice a cake with the slogan ‘Support Gay Marriage’. They refused because they said it contradicted with their religious views.

Justice Lady Hale said: “The bakers did not refuse to fulfil his order because of sexual orientation.

“They would have refused to make such a cake for any customer, irrespective of their sexual orientation.

“Their objection was to the message on the cake, not to the personal characteristics of Mr Lee or of anyone else with whom he was associated”.

She also addressed the freedoms the couple based their claims on from European Convention of Human Rights, saying: “The freedom to not express an opinion which one does not hold is also protected by Article 10 of the convention…

“This court has held that ‘nobody should be forced to have or express a political opinion in which he does not believe”.

The judgment has set a precedent that one can refuse to promote a belief they do not hold as long as they are not doing it because of the person who asked them.

Brian Lawless/PA Wire

Lady Hale continued: “The bakers could not refuse to supply their goods to Mr Lee because he was a gay man or supported at…

Supreme Court to announce its decision on Christian bakery in ‘gay cake’ case

Five Supreme Court justices will announce their decision in London on Wednesday.

Their ruling follows the latest round of a legal action brought against family-run Ashers bakery in Belfast by gay rights activist Gareth Lee, who won his case initially in the county court and then at the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal.

The bakery went on to fight the finding of discrimination at a Supreme Court hearing in Belfast in May.

During the Supreme Court proceedings, the panel of justices including president Lady Hale, were told that the owners were being forced to act against their religious beliefs.

Owners Daniel and Amy McArthur, who have said the law risked “extinguishing” their consciences, will be in London for the court’s judgment.

David Scoffield QC, for Ashers, argued that the state is penalising the baking firm, with the courts effectively compelling or forcing them to make a cake bearing a message with which they disagree as a matter of religious conscience.

Brian Lawless/PA Wire

The legal action against Ashers was taken by Mr Lee with support from Northern Ireland’s Equality Commission.

Mr Lee and Dr Michael Wardlow, the chief commissioner of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, are expected to be at the Supreme Court for the ruling.

Controversy first flared when Mr Lee, a member of the LGBT advocacy group QueerSpace, ordered a…
