Shroud of Turin on Public Display for First Time in Five Years, Over a Million Flock to See Alleged Face of Christ

Christian Post Report – Over a million people are reportedly flocking to Turin in Italy to be a part of the first public display in five years of the famous 14-foot shroud, believed by many to hold the imprint of the face of Jesus Christ.

The Shroud of Turin is displayed relatively rarely to the public, The Guardian reported, and has been available for viewing only five times since 1933.

The relic is usually kept sealed inside a container in a chapel next to the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, and was last displayed in 2010. This year its presentation commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Saint John Bosco, a Catholic who worked with poor youth in Turin.

BBC News noted that Pope Francis will be one of the visitors to see the famous cloth. The shroud is still widely debated among Christian and scientific circles over its authenticity, and over the question of whether it really was used to wrap the body of the crucified Christ.

While the Vatican has acknowledged the importance of the relic, it has never officially proclaimed where it stands on the shroud’s authenticity.

Various tests have been conducted on the relic, reaching different conclusions. In 1988, scientists claimed that the shroud is a 13th century forgery following carbon-14 tests, but further analysis has found that the fibers tested in 1988 were from a patch in the shroud, and not part of the original cloth.

Gary Habermas, distinguished research professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy and Theology at Liberty University, said at a conference in Charlotte in 2013 that radiation and blood stains on the shroud offer clues that the relic might indeed be authentic.

Habermas noted that one of the discoveries based on enhanced images of the Shroud presented is that the person’s teeth were showing through the skin.

“His skin is intact, his beard is intact, but you are able to see what’s inside coming out, just like if you are able to see what’s on the back of a hand,” he said.

“This is one of the best indications that the man in the Shroud, who was dead and was crucified, (has) radiation coming out,” he said of the teeth discovery. “And if that’s what this is, you’ve got something from the inside (coming out).

“(The teeth) are on the inside, but on the photo they are showing outside. Whichever way (the radiation) is coming, it dragged the image from the inside to the outside.”

Archbishop of Turin Cesare Nosiglia has said that regardless of what people believe about the shroud, the relic “reflects in a clear and precise manner how the Gospels describe the passion and death of Jesus.”

“It is not a profession of faith because it is not an object of faith, nor of devotion, but it can help faith,” Nosiglia said.

The Archbishop added that many who come to see the shroud often return for a second visit, when given the chance.

“That means there is a fundamental need in people’s hearts to renew this incredible experience that they had the first time they saw it,” he offered.

“Even non-believers will come. It’s an occasion that brings everybody together.”

ISIS Shoots and Beheads 30 Ethiopian Christians on Video; Promises Further ‘Revenge’ for ‘Shed Muslim Blood’

ISIS militants preparing to execute a group of Ethiopian Christians in Libya in a video released on April 19, 2015.

Christian Post Report – Terror group ISIS has released a new video showing the slaughter of two groups of Ethiopian Christians in Libya, numbering 30 people in total. ISIS warned “the nation of the cross” that more killings are to come, vowing further “revenge” for what it called “shed Muslim blood” in the region.

CNN noted that the 30-minute video, titled “Until There Came to Them Clear Evidence,” shows two groups of captives being executed in two different locations in Libya. The men in one of the groups were apparently shot to death, the others were beheaded.

A narrator says: “All praise be to Allah, the lord and cherisher of the world, and may peace and blessings be upon the prophet Muhammed. To the nation of the cross, we are back again on the sands, where the companions of the prophet, peace be upon him, have stepped on before, telling you: Muslim blood that was shed under the hands of your religion is not cheap.”

The voice continues: “In fact, their blood is the purest blood because there is a nation behind them (which) inherits revenge. And we swear to Allah: the one who disgraced you by our hands, you will not have safety, even in your dreams, until you embrace Islam.”

The latest ISIS production makes reference to the slaughter of 21 Coptic Christians in February, which was titled “A Message Signed with Blood to the Nation of the Cross.”

ISIS has captured a number of cities across Iraq and Syria in its mission to establish and Islamic Caliphate, but has also moved into other countries, such as Libya.

The Islamic militants have targeted Christians and other minorities in their attacks, and have blamed western powers for destabilizing the region and causing civilian deaths by way of airstrikes.

The U.S. and a broad coalition of allies have hit back against terror targets across Iraq and Syria, but have not sent any ground troops to fight the jihadists.

The White House condemned the latest mass slaughter, which comes a day after Afghanistan’s government blamed ISIS for a separate suicide attack in the country that killed at least 35 people.

“We express our condolences to the families of the victims and our support to the Ethiopian government and people as they grieve for their fellow citizens,” National Security Council spokesperson Bernadette Meehan said in a statement.

“That these terrorists killed these men solely because of their faith lays bare the terrorists’ vicious, senseless brutality.”

As for the murdered Ethiopians, an official with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church’s Patriarchate Office told The Associated Press that the men were likely migrants traveling northward to Libya.

“I believe this is just another case of the IS group killing Christians in the name of Islam. Our fellow citizens have just been killed on a faith-based violence that is totally unacceptable. This is outrageous,” Abba Kaletsidk Mulugeta said. “No religion orders the killing of other people, even people from another religion.”

Earlier in April, ISIS asked for $30 million to free up to 300 Assyrian Christians it has been holding captive since February. The Assyrians were captured after several village raids, and though a handful of them were later released, ISIS has warned the remaining captives will be killed unless they receive $100,000 per individual.

An officer within the Assyrian leadership said that it is up to the international community to help, as the Assyrians do not have such money.

“They know we cannot come up with this kind of money, so they are hoping other groups and countries will come up with the money,” the official said.

LA Clippers vs San Antonio Spurs Live Stream Free, TNT TV Start Time: Watch NBA 2015 Playoffs Basketball Online (Preview)

Christian Post Report – The Los Angeles Clippers will play host to the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday in Game 1 of their NBA 2015 Playoffs series. The game has a start time of 10.30 p.m. ET and takes place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The game can be watched on TV on the TNT network, or online through free live stream (details below).

Jordan Matthew Emmons / USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan.

Tim Duncan has said ahead of the game: “We’re starting on the road against one of the hottest teams playing right now. We’re comfortable playing on the road. We’ve been through just about every situation possible, so we have the capacity and we have the experience to be able to start a series on the road.”

The Spurs are the team with the experience; they have won five championships and reached nine conference finals in the last 18 years. The Clippers meanwhile have won just four Playoff series in their entire 45 year franchise history.

Coach Doc Rivers has said: “We’re not going to have their experience. There’s no way. So what? It’s a clear advantage. They should have an advantage. They have an advantage over every team playing, not just us. They have an advantage over everybody. They’ve won titles together, and that you cannot knock off.”

There are four games taking place on Sunday in the NBA as the 2015 Playoffs get underway. The Boston Celtics go on the road to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That game will mark the first time LeBron James will have worn a Cleveland shirt in the Playoffs since 2010. He will be hoping to lead the Cavaliers to a dream NBA Championship, however, to do so he and his team will have to navigate their way past the Boston Celtics first.

It is interesting to note that James’ first stint with the Cavaliers ended with defeat against the Celtics. In 2010 the Celtics came out on top in six games, and that memory has remained with James, and no doubt he will use it as motivation for today’s game.

The Brooklyn Nets will also be on the road against the Atlanta Hawks at the Philips Arena in Georgia.

The Memphis Grizzlies will also face off against the Portland Trail Blazers as the Grizzlies look to get their early season form back. They had looked certain to enter the Playoffs as the No. 2 seeds in the Western Conference, however, they suffered a bad slide in the final weeks of the regular season that has seen them slip to the fifth spot. There is now much uncertainty over how well Memphis will do in the Playoffs.

Center Marc Gasol though is looking to remain positive. He has said, “I’m happy how the team is and even though we’ve had a lot of ups and downs and adversity and things that didn’t go our way, it’s time to put all the negative stuff aside. Try to be positive and get ready for a really tough playoff series.”

Today’s game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the San Antonio Spurs will start at 10.30 p.m. ET and can be watched on TV on the TNT network or online through free live stream by clicking here.

Christian Football Star Tim Tebow Expected to Sign One-Year Contract With Philadelphia Eagles Monday

Officials from the recently launched outdoor A-11 Football League have said they would be interested in recruiting former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow.

Christian Post Report – Former Heisman Trophy winner and Christian football star Tim Tebow is expected to get another shot at advancing his NFL career Monday when the Philadelphia Eagles will reportedly sign him to a one-year contract.

The pending deal was first reported Sunday by Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer and others.

“Scoopage: The Eagles are planning to bring in Tim Tebow and sign him tomorrow as they begin their offseason program FOX SPORTS has learned,” tweeted Glazer Sunday evening.

Tebow has been out of the NFL since he was cut by the New England Patriots before the 2013 season. He had been working as an ESPN college football commentator since then. Tebow worked out with the Eagles in March and his workout appears to have been good enough to get him the deal according to SB Nation’s Adam Stites.

“He still has a long way to go. NFL teams are allowed to carry 90 players at this point in the league year. That number has to be cut to 53 by Week 1. The Eagles also have a crowded depth chart at quarterback. Philly traded for Sam Bradford and re-sign Mark Sanchez this offseason. The No. 3 quarterback at the moment is Matt Barkley, who was a fourth-round draft pick in 2013,” wrote Stites.

Tebow is yet to acknowledge the reports. The last post on his social media pages as of Sunday evening was Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.”

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott however wasted no time congratulating the player.

“Congrats to @TimTebow for joining the @Eagles. May he soar with his new team–except when he plays the @dallascowboys #NFL,” he tweeted.

Who’s Your Daddy?

“Having His Father’s name written on their foreheads.”
— Revelation 14:1

Christian Post Report – My mom was married and divorced seven times.

  • Greg Laurie
(Photo: rever Hoehne for Harvest Ministries)
Greg Laurie, senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California and Harvest Orange County in Irvine, California, shares the Gospel with a sold-out crowd of 19,000 for Harvest America at the American Airlines Center and Victory Park in Dallas, Texas, Oct. 5, 2014.

Thus, there were quite a few last names I could have chosen to take. But there was only one of those men who treated me as a father should treat a son: Oscar Felix Laurie. So I chose that name. When looking at the other options, it was the “name above all other names.” Though he was not my biological father, he was in every other way my dad.

You’ve heard the expression “Who’s your daddy?” Well, the Bible says you have a choice of who your father will be. You can either be “of your father the devil” (John 8:44) or you can choose the Heavenly Father.

If we are wise, we will choose the “name above all names,” Jesus Christ.

2 Timothy 2:19 tells us, “The Lord knows those who are His.” God sees what others may not. He knows those who bear His mark. It’s like those TSA Agents who use that little light on your driver’s license at the airport. It’s a black light that picks up a hologram on your license to help them authenticate it.

When we trust in Christ, He gives us His seal—His ID tag. Why? Because we belong to Him! We read in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, “You are not your own. For you were bought at a price.”

In old days, if something belonged to a king, it carried his seal. In the same way, we carry God’s seal: the Holy Spirit. “He has identified us as His own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything He has promised us” (2 Corinthians 1:22 NLT).

I read a story about an old gentleman who was known for his godly life. Someone asked him one day, “What do you do when you are tempted, Old Man?” He replied, “I just look up to heaven and say, ‘Lord, Your property is in danger.'”

If you are a Christian, then you are His. You bear His seal, His mark, and His name.

Up to 950 Migrants Fleeing Libya, Middle East Feared Dead After Boat Capsizes; Pope Says They Were ‘Looking for Happiness’

Migrants, boat, capsize, mediterranean (Photo: Reuters)

A boat carrying migrants in the Mediterranean, February 12, 2015.

Christian Post Report – Some 700 migrants, a number which could climb to 950, fleeing poverty and persecution to find “a better life” and “happiness” in Europe are now feared dead after the boat they were travelling in capsized in the Mediterranean some 112 miles south of Italy’s Lampedusa shortly before midnight Saturday.

One survivor quoted by Italy’s Ansa news agency says there were 950 migrants aboard the boat when it sank.

“They are literally trying to find people alive among the dead floating in the water,” Joseph Muscat, the prime minister of Malta – the first port of call for many of the 35,000 migrants who arrived in southern Europe so far this year. “Children, men, and women have died.”

A release from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres, on Sunday said so far their sources were reporting 700 migrants aboard the doomed vessel and just 50 of them had been rescued. If that number is confirmed, said the agency, it would be the “largest loss of life from any incident on the Mediterranean involving refugees and migrants.”

“This disaster confirms how urgent it is to restore a robust rescue-at-sea operation and establish credible legal avenues to reach Europe. Otherwise people seeking safety will continue to perish at sea,” said Commissioner Guterres in the release Sunday before making an appeal for help from the European Union to address the ongoing crisis pointing out that only last week 400 lives were lost at sea in another incident. The Lampedusa disaster of October 2013 also saw almost 600 lives lost in two separate incidents.

“It also points to the need for a comprehensive European approach to address the root causes that drive so many people to this tragic end. I hope the EU will rise to the occasion, fully assuming a decisive role to prevent future such tragedies,” he said.

According to USA Today, the European Union’s foreign minister, Federica Mogherini, added migration as a last-minute emergency issue to an EU foreign ministers’ meeting on Monday in Luxembourg.

“Europe can do more and Europe must do more,” said Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament. “It is a shame and a confession of failure how many countries run away from responsibility and how little money we provide for rescue missions.”

Pope Francis who has spoken on the issue of migrants in the past also gave his strongest appeal yet for international help with the migrant crisis in his weekly Angelus address to a crowd of pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square on Sunday.

“A big boat laden with migrants overturned last night and it is feared there are hundreds of victims,” said Pope Francis.

“They are men and women like us, our brothers seeking a better life, starving, persecuted, wounded, exploited, victims of war. They were looking for a better life, they were looking for happiness,” he said. “I invite you to pray in silence first and then all together for these brothers and sisters.”
