‘Curb to Castle’ Journey to God: Complete Stranger Invites Homeless Family to Live in His Home for 7 Months

Christian Post Report – As the unmarried homeless couple stood on a street corner in northern California with their four children holding up a sign that read “Family Needs Help God Bless,” little did they know that within 10 years they would be living comfortably in their own house overlooking Lake Elsinore and living their lives by “God’s design.”

In a recently released book called From The Curb To A Castle, author Robert Wessely recounted how he and his homeless family were saved by a “perfect stranger,” who picked them up off the streets and let them live in his home for seven months, leading them to God and helping them eliminate all drug and alcohol addictions.

In interviews with The Christian Post, Robert and Melissa Wessely admitted that their lives were in a dark place in the winter of 2004-2005, when they were living night-by-night out of motel rooms, and spent the days begging for money on the streets of Eureka so that they could afford the next night’s room.

But as the last part of their sign read, “God Bless,” God truly blessed them just a few days before Christmas, when a strange woman drove up to them as they were panhandling from a curb and gave the family $10.

Robert said he immediately went into a nearby gas station and spent the money on food for his children, all of which were under the age of seven. The mysterious woman drove up again to the street corner and this time gave them her husband’s cell phone number and told them that he could offer Robert a job at his construction company.

That night, Robert called the number and was given a job as a day laborer working for a man by the name of Carl Hawkins. As Christmas eve approached, Hawkins told CP that he felt inclined by God’s will to let the family stay in his own home with his family over the holidays, rather than having them spend Christmas on the streets.

“The next day was Christmas morning. It was a whole new start on life. It was a beautiful thing, the perfect stranger to answer God’s call. That is a blessing,” Robert said.

But as the Christmas came and went, Hawkins said that God called him to continue providing for the family and to help them get their lives in order so that one day they can provide for themselves.

“He started working for me the day before Christmas eve. I felt the Lord saying ‘Christmas is all about me and my love. Show [them] my love,'” Hawkins explained. “It started out that they were just going to live with us over the holidays. It was after that that the Lord impressed upon me to really open the doors and offer him a place to live with his family, if they were willing to live by God’s design.”

But if the family was going to live in his house, Hawkins laid down some ground rules that the family needed to abide by, such as honoring God with thanksgiving for every meal, going to church for worship, having worship and family time during the week, no using drugs or alcohol, no cursing, managing the finances appropriately and extending forgiveness to each other.

“When you live your life by God’s design, you are going to see the results and produce and the fruit from that and it is going to be positive, I guarantee it,” Hawkins asserted. “At that point, it is just a question of whether you want to submit to God and his existence or not. I am not going to try to convince you. He will do it Himself, if you live by His word.”

The Wesselys said they were so desperate to stay off the streets, that they willingly accepted Hawkins terms. Hawkins explained that he first had some concern about Melissa, because of her upbringing in an atheist household. However, Melissa said she felt pulled toward God as she started going to Bible studies. Within three months she and Robert were both baptized and saved.

“It was pretty amazing. I had lived so long without [believing] in anything,” Melissa explained to CP. “When he first said we had to go to church, I was like ‘OK, it doesn’t really mean anything to me.’ But as I went to church, I met the ladies and it was really interesting and it just came into my heart to believe in Him. I started going to Bible study with the ladies there and it was just really great to have that family.”

Robert had his own struggles dealing with his alcohol addiction, but reluctantly gave up drinking one night after being confronted by Hawkins about his problem. After Robert decided he needed to stop, the entire family went out for pizza and he had his ceremonial last pitcher of beer.

“That’s what [Robert] wanted to do for his last drink and so we all agreed and we went and that was his last one and he has not drank since.” Melissa stated.

In the 2005, Robert and Melissa decided to finally get married after being together for about four years and having children. They asked Hawkins to officiate their wedding. Having grown close with the church community, members from their church pitched in to help provide them with some extra cash for their honeymoon.

After months of living under “God’s design” the family finally mustered enough cash together to get their own apartment and moved out of the Hawkins household later in the summer of 2005.

“Eventually we did get back on track. When we were broken, we were broken together and we healed together. It was an amazing thing,” Robert said. “The Lord always had a plan for us. He was always guiding us from location to location, from street corner to sober living. He was always there for my family and at the time we didn’t realize that until we got saved.”

After living on their own for a few months, Robert said they decided to take a “leap of faith” and move down to Southern California, where he originally grew up so that his kids could know their grandparents and other relatives. They moved down without jobs, but were eventually able to find employment and get an apartment of their own again.

Lake Elsinore (Photo: Submitted)

Above is the view of Lake Elsinore from the Wessely home.

As Robert got a job working as a supervisor for a logistics firm and Melissa became a restaurant manager, the Wesselys saved enough resources to buy their own house. About two years ago, the Wesselys purchased a home on a hill overlooking Lake Elsinore, which is about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

“Instead of looking at a trickling of water on a curb, now on our front porch, I get to look at a lake. The beauty behind God is a true blessing,” Robert said. “We literally went from curb to castle.”

Wanting to share his story with other homeless individuals and families, Robert periodically hits the street corners to help spread hope in the lives of the homeless.

“I am able to use this book as a tool now to go to that curb that they are sitting on and I am able to go and give them some inspiration,” Robert said. “I am able to tell them that ‘The Lord is just waiting for you.'”

Hawkins, who is referenced in Wessely’s book as “Chuck,” has started his own ministry called Chuck’s Love. Hawkins’ goal is to take the program that he ran in his house with the Wessely family and use it to enable homes and churches across the country to do change the lives of homeless families in their neighborhoods.

“I am excited to see what type of provision God is going to bring to bring this about, whether it is just one house in one town or one house in every county in California or the United States, I don’t know. I just want to be faithful if God is calling me to do something and do it to the best of my ability,” Hawkins said. “If we were to have that type of Christian-based ministry where Jesus came down and ate with the sinners and made himself one with the sinner so that he could win the sinner, that is really the heart behind Chuck’s Love. It’s not my love, it’s God’s love,”

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 Spoilers, Cast News: GoT Stars Dish About Upcoming Season

The cast members of the hit fantasy drama TV series “Game of Thrones” recently appeared in public to promote the launching of the show’s upcoming brand new fifth season at the Tower of London.

Christian Post Report – HBO’s “Game of Thrones”

Fans present during the gala were able to take a glimpse of GoT stars like Kit Harington (who plays Jon Snow), Gwendoline Christie (as Brienne of Tarth), Sophie Turner (as Sansa Stark) and Alfie Allen (as Theon Greyjoy) grazing the event.

The occasion also features a slew of interviews with the cast where they unload amounts of information about what followers of the TV series should expect when Season 5 kicks off this April.

The Greyjoy actor started off by saying that the forthcoming chapter will be filled with “shocking scenes without a doubt.”

“I’d like to see how much farther they can push the sort of dark side of it as a show as a whole,” the 28-year-old actor told The Daily Record.

Fans, meanwhile, should also never worry for his neutered and broken character when the show returns to the small screen as there will be a “little bit of light at the end of the tunnel” for him.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (as Jaime Lannister) also teased that this season will be the “most exciting” part of the show.

“This season we are getting into the end game of this story so some of the major storylines start to overlap,” he said.

Echoing what George RR Martin said about the HBO adaptation veering away from the book canon, Michael McElhatton (who plays Roose Bolton) reveals that there will be major twists that will surely shock the fans.

“There’s a lot of shocks particularly for the book readers. There are things that happen now that aren’t in the books,” McElhatton said. “The world has just got bigger and bigger and we are going to move into the world towards Dawn a lot more and introduce a lot of new characters there.”

“Game of Thrones” Season 5 is scheduled to premiere on April 12, 2015 on HBO.

Chicago Cubs MLB 2015 News, Rumors: Scott Boras Rips Cubs for Their Handling of Kris Bryant

Scott Boras is at odds with the Chicago Cubs. The main point of contention is Kris Bryant and if he will start the season with the Cubs’ Triple A affiliate in Iowa. It would be easy to write this off as a team bringing along a guy who is very likely to be a big star in this league slowly. However, the fact remains if Bryant starts the season in Iowa, the Cubs organization would gain a full season worth of control of the young star. Whether of not that plays into their decision no one but they can say.

Kris Bryant reuters.com

Christian Post Report – Despite tearing up Spring Training Kris Bryant may start the 2015 in the minor leagues

Boras, Bryant’s agent, is already taking to his microphone to call out the Cubs for this.

“Cubs ownership has a choice. Are they going to present to their market that they are trying to win? Tom Ricketts said they were all about winning. When someone says it’s the system, no, it’s a choice — the choice of winning,” he told Comcast Sportsnet Chicago.

“Everybody in baseball is saying he’s a major-league player ready for the big leagues,” Boras continued to USA Today. “I have players call me. Executives call me. The Cubs’ people want him there. Everyone says, ‘They cannot send this guy down.’ It’s too obvious.”

In 23 at bats in Cactus League play so far, this spring Bryant has six home runs and two doubles that seem to indicate that he is more than ready to play on the big club, but even if the Cubs are keeping him down for a few weeks to get an extra year of service out of him. It is the club responsibility to protect its assets as much as it is Boras’ job to get his star talent to the free agent market as quickly as possible.

PCUSA Church Ordains First Married Lesbian Couple as Ministers, Days After Denomination’s Marriage Amendment

PCUSA Screengrab from Delaware Online

Christian Post Report – Days after America’s largest Presbyterian denomination approved an amendment to its constitution changing its definition of marriage to include same-sex couples, a lesbian couple will be ordained as ministers Sunday at First & Central Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Delaware.

Kaci Clark-Porter and Holly, who married three years ago, will be the first-ever same-sex couple to be jointly ordained, according to USA Today, which says the denomination couldn’t point to other examples.

Last year, Presbyterian Church (USA) approved a vote on an amendment to change their official definition of marriage from “a man and a woman” to “two people, traditionally a man and a woman.” And on Tuesday, the proposed change to PCUSA’s Book of Order got the necessary number of presbytery votes.

The ordination service will be held Sunday afternoon.

Both were raised in conservative Texas homes, divorced their husbands and came out in their 20s during seminary.

“It wasn’t until I started serving here at First & Central that I felt like I really became a pastor,” WDDE quoted Clark-Porter as saying. “That I was really able to care for people. Because I finally cared for myself, and this community cared for me and accepted me, and accepted my relationship to Holly fully.”

Clark-Porter will now be the church’s associate pastor, and Holly runs the Big Gay Church, which operates at First & Central.

At the PCUSA General Assembly held in Detroit, Michigan, last June, a majority of delegates voted for a recommendation to amend the Book of Order regarding marriage definition.

“A proposed amendment to change the constitution to include same-gender marriages in the church’s constitution passed the General Assembly but must be ratified by a majority of the church’s 172 regional presbyteries,” explained PCUSA in a FAQ document. “Presbyteries have one year to vote on the proposed amendment. If a majority ratifies the amendment, it would take effect June 21.”

This is not the first time that PCUSA has hit the headlines on its move toward greater acceptance of homosexuality within the church.

In 2010, the PCUSA General Assembly approved a measure that allowed for presbyteries to approve the ordination of noncelibate homosexuals.

Obama Again Urges Iran to Release Pastor Saeed

Naghmeh Abedini, Pastor Saeed Abedini and their two young children in this undated family photo.

Christian Post Report – President Obama again called on Iran to release U.S. Pastor Saeed Abedini, who has been in a jail for his Christian faith for nearly two-and-a-half years, as the Middle Eastern nation celebrates the Nowruz holiday, a festival of spring and the beginning of the year in the Persian calendar.

“Today, as families across the world gather to mark this holiday, we remember those American families who are enduring painful separations from their loved ones who are imprisoned or went missing in Iran,” Obama said in a statement.

“Saeed Abedini of Boise, Idaho has spent two and a half years detained in Iran on charges related to his religious beliefs. He must be returned to his wife and two young children, who needlessly continue to grow up without their father,” he added.

Saeed’s family, back in the United States, celebrated their son Jacob’s seventh birthday this week – without the dad for the third straight year.

Obama earlier told Jacob he would “try” to bring Saeed home for his birthday, but Iran did not respond to calls for his release. Obama raised the issue of the pastor’s detention also during his first phone conversation with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in September 2013.

“The spirit of family is deeply woven into all of the rich cultural traditions of the Nowruz holiday,” Obama reminded Iran in his Saturday’s statement. “It is a time for reuniting and rejoicing with loved ones and sharing hopes for the new year.”

Nowruz is also a time of “renewal, compassion, and understanding,” and “I reiterate my commitment to bringing our citizens home and call on the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately release Saeed Abedini, Amir Hekmati and Jason Rezaian and to work cooperatively with us to find Robert Levinson so that they all can be safely reunited with their families as soon as possible,” Obama said.

American Center for Law and Justice, which has been working to secure Saeed’s release, expressed gratitude to President Obama. “It is this engagement at the highest levels that continues to put pressure on Iran to release Pastor Saeed – a U.S. citizen,” the group said.

“We urge the Obama Administration, as it literally sits across the negotiating table from Iran, to do all within its power to bring Pastor Saeed home. No American should be left behind to suffer unjustly in an Iranian prison simply because of his Christian faith,” it added.

But Christian Examiner’s Will Hall noted, “The online posting is not an official diplomatic communication, and it is not clear why the White House chose this medium to engage the issue when it has U.S. officials in direct contact with Iranian negotiators attempting to forge a deal about that country’s controversial nuclear program.”

Pastor Saeed has sustained prolonged internal injuries due to beatings in the prison. The pastor was recently “shaken” as six of his fellow prisoners were executed around him.

Saeed grew up in Iran before converting to Christianity at the age of 20. He later traveled with his family back and forth between Iran and the U.S. to meet other members of his family and for Christian work.

During one such trip in 2009, Saeed was detained by Iranian officials and interrogated for his conversion. While he was released with a warning against engaging in underground church activities, he was once again arrested in 2012 while working on a non-sectarian orphanage project.

Saeed was sentenced for endangering “national security,” but the punishment has clearly more to do with Saeed’s Christian faith.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 11 Spoilers: Episode 16 Recap ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’

This week on Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith is still on her streak and she wonders if Derek is cheating on her, and the doctors of Grey-Sloane Memorial deal with some major trauma which was the result of a very unfortunate accident.

Christian Post Report – Last week, Meredith called Derek in D.C. only to hear the voice of another woman answering his phone. This week, Meredith keeps on calling Derek, but now instead of someone picking up, her calls are all going to voice mail.

Meredith contemplates whether Derek is cheating on her or not, on Grey’s Anatomy

Meredith goes into the break room and wakes up Alex. She tells him what happened, and while they’re talking, her half-sister, Dr. Pierce, lets them know that she’s on the top bunk and listening. Meredith asks them if they think Derek is cheating on her, and they both say he’s not.

At the ER, several patients are being brought in. It turns out that a car crashed into a home and injured the young couple living there. One of the patients is a pregnant woman, who appears to be ok, but her husband seems to be in very bad shape.

The driver of the car is an older man named Martin. His wife, Sally, arrives, and she tells the doctors that he has Alzheimers and that he wasn’t supposed to drive. Martin starts getting flustered and knocks down Dr. Pierce. Once she’s awake, she assures everyone that she’s fine. Martin goes into surgery.

After his surgery, Martin wakes up and he’s completely lucid. He’s reciting poems to his wife and he’s catching up on the past five years. Dr. Webber is stunned as he couldn’t have cured this man of Alzheimers. It turns out that Martin had a fluid build-up inside his brain and that his condition is treatable.

Meanwhile, the pregnant woman, who appeared to be fine, stops in the middle of a sentence and falls into a seizure. Arizona tries to save her life, but the woman dies. Now it’s up to her to deliver the baby before it’s too late.

The baby’s father has survived the surgery and Meredith tells Dr. Webber that as long as he pulls through the night then he’ll be ok.

Later, Arizona and Bailey get the baby out. At first the baby is not breathing, but Alex gets him to breathe and he’s fine.

Upon learning that he killed the pregnant woman, Martin refuses the treatment and says that he’d rather forget that he killed someone. He tells Sally to let him go and put him in a home.

At Meredith’s home, she’s sitting on the couch when someone starts jiggling the handle of her front door. She opens the door, and finds Derek standing there.

“Grey’s Anatomy” airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.

Christian Post Report – Manchester United’s Robin van Persie reacts after their English Premier League soccer match against Everton at Goodison Park in Liverpool, northern England, August 20, 2012.

Today’s big game sees the fourth placed Manchester United taking on the 5th placed Liverpool. There are just two points separating the two teams with Liverpool on 54 points from their 29 games so far, and United on 56 points from their 29 games.

That means whoever claims the win today will finish the weekend in the all important fourth spot, which is the final place that would secure a place in next season’s Champions League from the EPL.

In team news, Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has been out for five weeks with a groin injury, and although reports have confirmed he has started training again, he may not be ready to be thrown in at the deep end with a game against United.

Striker Mario Balotelli will be available following his illness, which kept him out from his side’s win over Swansea earlier in the week.

For Manchester United, midfielder Angel Di Maria is back after a one-match ban, and defenders Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo could return after injury but neither will start.

Liverpool have been in good form against United in recent years and have lost only one of their last seven meetings against the Manchester team, winning five, drawing one, and losing one through that span.

Fans can expect a clear result today with only one draw between these two teams in their last 18 league games against one another.

Today’s big game between Liverpool and Manchester United will kick off at 1.30 p.m. GMT (9.30 a.m. ET) and can be watched online through free live stream by clicking here.

Christian Post Report – Barcelona’s Lionel Messi (C) controls the ball against Valencia’s Gago during their Spanish first division soccer match against Valencia at Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona September 2, 2012.

Coming into this game it is Barcelona who have the upper hand in La Liga, although by the end of today that could change. The Catalan club have a one point advantage over Real with 65 points from their 27 games so far, where as the Madrid team have 64 points from the same number of games.

That means a draw today wouldn’t change anything, although a win for Barcelona would put clear space between themselves and Real. A Real win would see them leapfrog Barcelona into top spot, and with just 10 games of the season to go in La Liga after today that could prove decisive.

However, Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has claimed that today’s big El Clasico game will not decide the title, although no doubt he will be desperate to claim the three points in front of a home crowd today.

Enrique has said, “It’s an important game but not a decisive one. These games are certainly different to any others. They are our eternal rivals. There’s also our head-to-head goal difference to bear in mind.”

Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale (R) celebrates with teammates Daniel Carvajal (L) and Xabi Alonso after scoring a goal against Borussia Dortmund during their Champions League quarter-final first leg soccer match at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid April 2, 2014.

The Barca boss added: “There are no clear favorites in games like these. But playing in front of our own fans always gives us that extra boost. This is a nice chance to put some space between us. It’s not quite as intense as a manager. You have to control what’s happening on the pitch. It’s more about keeping your cool and making decisions at the right time.”

Real will be confident having won the last two El Clasico games, and if they can make it three in a row today then it will be their best El Clasico run of results since way back to 1978.

However, Barcelona have history on their side; while they have been top of the Spanish La Liga they have never lost at home to Real Madrid since way back in the 1929-1930 season.

Today’s huge El Clasico game between Barcelona and Real Madrid will kick off at 8 p.m. GMT (4 p.m. ET) and can be watched online through free live stream by clicking here.

‘Dredd 2’ News, Update: Screenwriter Alex Garland Says Sequel Probably Won’t Happen

Kate Urban as Judge Dredd in 2012 movie “Dredd”

Christian Post Report – An interview with 2012 “Dredd” writer-producer Alex Garland reveals that there might be a very slim chance that a sequel for the science action film would push through.

Speaking with the Collider, Garland seems to confirm that a “Dredd 2” movie would never happen. He shared his thoughts about the Karl Urban and Leda Headey-starred box office feature, and pointed out the support it garnered from fans despite its apparent financial failure.

“The ‘Dredd’ thing is a surprise. It’s a really complicated set of emotions. I have a lot of regret about how things worked out with ‘Dredd,’ but it’s very gratifying. The regret it – you do a kind of transaction, particularly with the creators of it, which is that we want to do this thing and honor what you did, and try to do it properly, and then the film will reward that trust. That act of faith and trust and decency. And I think that the film rewarded them in one sense, but not in another,” Garland said.

“I do believe it rewarded them creatively, unless they’re lying to me about that. But I think it has created this thing of this movie that fails. The story of ‘Dredd’ is that of a failed movie,” he added.

“How can I say this without being soppy? It’s touching,” Garland went on to say referring to the cult status of the 3-year-old movie. “It means something that these people support the film in that way, but the thing people want, which is a sequel, I don’t think is going to happen.”

“I think it will happen (let me rephrase that) I don’t think it’s happening with me and the people who made the last one,” Garland clarified.
