The true story behind ‘I Have A Dream’

The most famous speech ever delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was almost not the speech we remember.

Dr. King was speaking at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington,
DC, on August 28, 1963. The occasion was the March on Washington for Jobs and
Freedom. He was the keynote speaker.

Toward the end of his address, he read from his prepared
manuscript: “Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South
Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and
ghettoes of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and
will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.”

He then paused for ten seconds as the crowd cheered him on.
During that pause, the trajectory of the speech was transformed.

Clarence B. Jones, the man who wrote the speech from Dr.
King’s previous messages and thoughts, said later that he heard someone from
the stage shout to Dr. King, “Tell them about the dream, Martin. Tell them
about the dream.”

It was Mahalia Jackson, Dr. King’s favorite gospel singer.

‘Free at last, free at last’

Dr. King then slid his prepared manuscript to the left of
the lectern, paused, and spoke these immortal words: “I say to you today,
my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I
still have a dream.”

He proceeded for the last five minutes of his speech to
speak extemporaneously and spontaneously about his dream for America and the
freedom he sought for all her people.

He then concluded with words that echo still today:
“Free at last, free at last. Great God Almighty, we are free at
last.”

It has been said that coincidence is when God prefers to
remain anonymous. His sovereignty is so universal that he knows when a sparrow
falls to the ground (Matthew 10:29) or a friend offers support during a speech.
And our acts of service, like Mahalia Jackson’s word of encouragement, may not
be recognized by others, but they…

More than 20,000 Orthodox Christians Flock to Jordan River to Be Baptized

More than 20,000 Orthodox Christians Flock to Jordan River to Be Baptized

Over the weekend, over 20,000 Christians from around the world gathered at the Jordan River to be baptized.

According to CBN, the pilgrims commemorated the Feast of the Epiphany, which is a day that Orthodox Christians and Catholics remember when the three Magi visited baby Jesus.

The Jordan River is believed to be the site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus, as well as where the Israelites crossed over into the Promised Land and where Elijah ascended to heaven.

The annual pilgrimage started in January when five Christian denominations held baptismal ceremonies at the River. Coptic and Armenian Christians will continue with other events later this month.

Israel has embraced the Christian community trekking through their country to honor their faith.

“The Civil Administration put much effort in order to prepare for these important ceremonies as part of its program to preserve freedom of religion and worship for all Christian denominations,” said Jericho District Coordination and Liaison Administration head Lieutenant Colonel Eran Gross. “Thanks to the ceremonies, we see a marked rise in tourism alongside a boost to the economy, for which I am thankful. On this occasion, I would like to wish all members of the Christian community happy holidays.”

For those who cannot travel to the Jordan, Christians dunk themselves into freezing rivers all over the country, including in…

New Jersey Public Schools Begin Teaching Children LGBT History

New Jersey Public Schools Begin Teaching Children LGBT History

A New Jersey law requiring that public schools teach LGBT history isn’t set to go into effect until this fall, but several schools across the state are already participating in a pilot program.

Twelve schools, including those in Hackensack, Newark and Asbury Park, began teaching LGBT history this month as part of a pilot program for new LGBT-focused curriculum, NorthJersey.com reported.

The new law, signed last year by Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, requires public schools to teach students about the “political, economic, and social contributions” of “lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people” and persons with disabilities. It applies to middle school and high school students and must be taught in all public schools beginning in the 2020-21 school year.

LGBT groups championed the new law, which made New Jersey the second state – after California – to require the teaching of gay history. (Illinois recently became the third.)

“We want students to see themselves in the stories that are told,” Ashley Chiappano, safe schools and community education manager for Garden State Equality, told NorthJersey.com. “We want to make sure they are getting accurate, appropriate and historically relevant information about the community and the strides that have been made.”

The law’s intent, supporters told the website, is for LGBT curriculum to be woven into multiple subjects. Examples…

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is ‘among greatest owners in NFL’: The significance of a servant heart

“I want to thank the Lord for blessing us with this
opportunity. The glory belongs to him. And this trophy belongs to the best fans
in the National Football League.”

This is how Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt accepted the
Lamar Hunt Trophy when his team won the AFC Championship on Sunday.

His testimony glorifying Jesus was no surprise to me because
it was my privilege to be his pastor for many years. Clark and his family were
always faithful in worship and gracious with their personal support. I have watched
them serve Jesus and have long been impressed with their humility and servant
hearts.

The Hunt legacy

Clark’s father was one of the giants in American sports history. Lamar Hunt founded the American Football League, known as the American Football Conference (AFC) today. He was also instrumental in founding Major League Soccer and its predecessor, the North American Soccer League. He was a co-founder of World Championship Tennis as well. He is a member of the Hall of Fame in all three sports.

Lamar Hunt is also known for
naming the NFL’s championship game the “Super Bowl.”

Lamar founded the Dallas Texans,
which became the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963. After his death, his son, Clark,
inherited the team along with his siblings in 2005. Clark serves as the team’s
CEO and represents the Chiefs at all owner’s meetings.

Now his team is competing in
Super Bowl LIV.

Making a difference

Clark told reporters before Sunday’s game that his desire to win the AFC trophy isn’t just because his father’s name is on it: “If we win that trophy, it’s not for me, it’s not for our family. To some degree it’s for the team and the coaching staff, but it’s really for our great fans.” The article’s headline is not surprising: “Clark Hunt’s words prove he’s among greatest owners in NFL.”

Clark Hunt is a tremendous
example of a culture-changing Christian, a believer who is using his influence
to…

Popular End Times Televangelist Jack Van Impe Dies at 88-Years-Old

Popular End Times Televangelist Jack Van Impe Dies at 88-Years-Old

Controversial yet wildly popular end times televangelist Jack Van Impe has died at the age of 88.

Jack Van Impe Ministries International confirmed the passing of the eschatological pastor in a statement on Saturday calling him a “good and faithful servant.”

“The beloved Dr. Jack Van Impe was welcomed into Heaven by His blessed Savior and Lord who he had so faithfully served in ministry for over 70 years,” the statement read.

“Please pray for his beloved wife and lifelong ministry partner Rexella and their families as they grieve this immense loss and for wisdom as she and the Board lead the ministry in the days ahead.”

Van Impe – often referred to as the “walking Bible” for his expansive memorization of Bible verses – first gained popularity through his television show Jack Van Impe Presents in the late 80s and 90s. The show – which starred both him and his wife Rexella – featured a controversial segment of the couple analyzing current news headlines through the lens of the second coming and end times prophecies.

According to Christianity Today, Van Impe was no stranger to controversy. Reportedly, after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the television pastor became increasingly worried about Islam. During Barack Obama’s presidency, Van Impe even claimed that Obama was part of a Muslim plot to infiltrate the United States.

Then in 2011, Van Impe had a…

Chiefs and 49ers will play in Super Bowl LIV: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the cultural leverage of excellence

Note: As a companion to today’s Daily Article, our ministry has posted my sermon from yesterday on our website. “The formula for eternal significance” explores the story of Zacchaeus and invites us to partner with Jesus in impacting our culture. I hope it is helpful to you.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Tennessee Titans in yesterday’s AFC Conference Championship game. The San Francisco 49ers won at home against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Conference Championship. Oddsmakers are favoring the Chiefs slightly in Super Bowl LIV.

Since this is not a sports column and our nation is celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, you may be wondering why I am leading with these results. Here’s what the teams who competed yesterday and Dr. King have in common: they illustrate the cultural leverage of excellence.

Faith and football

The Chiefs are led by CEO Clark Hunt. I was privileged to be his pastor for many years in Dallas and can attest personally to his family’s strong commitment to Jesus.

When his team won the AFC Championship yesterday, Clark told the world, “I want to thank the Lord for blessing us with this opportunity. The glory belongs to him. And this trophy belongs to the best fans in the National Football League.”

Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill has made clear his faith in Jesus over the years as well, recently telling reporters: “I pray before every game. I spend time with God before I get to the stadium and then when I lace up my cleats, I thank God for the opportunity to go out there and attempt to glorify him.”

By contrast, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has made news in recent years for the fact that he no longer identifies as a Christian. After meeting and being influenced by Rob Bell, Rodgers told ESPN, “I think organized religion can have a mind-debilitating effect, because there is an exclusivity that can shut you out from being open to the…

The Retired Pastor – ThomRainer.com

By Thom S. Rainer

Tens of thousands of pastors and other church staff members are becoming retirement age each year. We have not seen anything like this phenomenon. These church leaders are reaching retirement age, but they still have many years of active ministry and life left in them. How will they respond? How will churches respond?

We are watching this trend with fascination at Church Answers. Let’s look at some of the key issues unfolding.

  • Some churches are fine with older pastors remaining in their roles. Others are not. We see many churches where the members don’t think twice about having a 60-something or 70-something pastor. They see their pastors as fully capable and fully energetic to continue leading. Other churches are ready for the older pastors to move on. This latter disposition is exacerbated when the church is struggling and/or in decline.
  • Too many retirement-age pastors don’t have options because of financial realities. I’ve addressed this issue in an earlier post. Though my observations are anecdotal, well over half of the pastors with whom I have conversed are woefully prepared financially when they hit their mid-60s. It’s usually a case of churches failing to care for pastors and pastors failing to plan for themselves.
  • The most common option for pastors leaving their role is to become interim or part-time pastors in other churches. The opportunities for this ministry are increasing regularly. At any given point, we could have over 50,000 churches seeking an…
