NBA News: Los Angeles Lakers’ Steve Nash Announces Retirement, Speaks on ‘Weird Transition’

Steven Nash Reuters/Photo

Two-timed NBA Most Valuable Player and currently Los Angeles Lakers point guard Steve Nash announced on Saturday his retirement from the National Basketball Association.

Christian Post Report – A statement from the 41-year-old athlete was released and published on The Players’ Tribune and it reads:

“The greatest gift has been to be completely immersed in my passion and striving for something I loved so much — visualizing a ladder, climbing up to my heroes. The obsession became my best friend. I talked to her, cherished her, fought with her and got knocked on my a– by her.”

“And that is what I’m most thankful for in my career. In my entire life, in some ways. Obviously, I value my kids and my family more than the game, but in some ways having this friend — this ever-present pursuit — has made me who I am, taught me and tested me, and given me a mission that feels irreplaceable. I am so thankful. I’ve learned so many invaluable lessons about myself and about life. And of course I still have so much to learn. Another incredible gift.”

Speaking with ESPN’s correspondent Marc Stein, the Canadian professional baller talked about the “weird transition” following his decision of calling it quits.

“To now realize that it’s over, it’s really difficult to put it into words,” Nash said. “Every athlete goes through it. A lot of people say an athlete dies twice, and in some ways, without being salacious, that’s true. If you want to enjoy and be happy in life, you have in some ways to say goodbye to your former self. And that’s not easy, especially for guys. We’re not the most communicative of the species. So it’s hard to kind of put it all in perspective.”

Nash, who made about 10,335 assists during his NBA stay, wasn’t able to play with the Los Angeles Lakers this season following a slew of injuries.

ISIS Training Hundreds of British Jihadis to Carry Out ‘Highly Likely’ Chlorine Gas Attack on Trains, Warns Chemical Expert

Jihadi John (Photo: Reuters/Stefan Wermuth)

Two police officers walk outside a flat in London, February 26, 2015. Local media reported that the flat is the former home of Mohammed Emwazi. Investigators believe that the “Jihadi John” masked fighter who fronted Islamic State beheading videos is a British man named Mohammed Emwazi, two U.S. government sources said on Thursday. He was born in Kuwait and comes from a prosperous family in London, where he grew up and graduated with a computer programming degree, according to The Washington Post.

Christian Post Report – Terror group ISIS is training hundreds of British jihadists to carry out what a chemical expert called a “highly likely” chlorine gas attack on trains and sports games in the U.K., a report said.

“I am convinced that IS (another name for ISIS) fighters are all being given training in chemical weapons and the British ones, who are likely to be more educated, will all be targeted in the hope they may return home,” said Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, the retired head of chemical and biological weapons for the British Army, according to the Mail Online.

“They will have a reasonable idea on how to use chlorine and other toxic chemicals as a terror weapon,” he added.

“This could happen on a train or tube or even at a big football match. Acquiring weapons and ammunition is very difficult in the UK but you can get up to 90 tonnes of chlorine without any license.”

Scotland Yard has apparently warned that close to 500 Britons trained by ISIS in Iraq and Syria have returned to the U.K., raising fears of a terror attack at home.

Chlorine is a “choking agent,” which can burn the lungs when inhaled in large quantities.

Colonel de Bretton-Gordon, who is now managing director of Avon Protection, added that he has been teaching Syrian civilians on how to avoid chlorine, and is sharing the same advice with Britons.

“Chlorine is not very toxic and the green and yellow clouds are easy to see and avoid. It is very non-persistent only lasting for a few minutes. It was used in the First World War but dropped because it did not work very well,” he continued.

“It is key that ISIS don’t get the advantage of an unexpected chemical attack in the UK. If you can hold your breath for 30 seconds and run in the opposite direction you will be okay. If outside you should aim to climb or reach higher ground.”

Britain has noted that a large number of its citizens are going oversees to fight for ISIS. Back in August 2014, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond revealed that an estimated 800 British Muslim fighters have joined the terror group, which was more than the 600 or so British Muslims serving in Britain’s Ministry of Defense Armed Forces.

ISIS has attracted over 20,000 foreign fighters to fight for its mission of establishing an Islamic Caliphate in the region.

One infamous British terrorist has been identified as “Jihadi John,” a man seen in a number of ISIS’ beheading videos. British intelligence believe the man is Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born computer-programming graduate from London.

British Prime Minister David has vowed to do “everything we can” to bring to justice terrorists such as “Jihadi John.”

“When there are people anywhere in the world who commit appalling and heinous crimes against British citizens, we will do everything we can with the police, with the security services, with all that we have at our disposal to find these people and put them out of action,” Cameron said back in February.

Tom Cruise Suspended From Airborne Plane in ‘Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’ Trailer (VIDEO)

Tom Cruise is enjoying being back on top at the North American box office with Mission:Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

Christian Post Report – Paramount Pictures has recently released its trailer for “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation,” its fifth film in the action spy series starring Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise tackles a new stunt, dangling from the shut doors of an airborne aircraft in the trailer for “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation,” Paramount Picture’s fifth installment of the “Mission Impossible” franchise.

The upcoming action spy film that’s due in theaters in July 31 this year will feature Cruise as operative Ethan Hunt. He will be joined by Jeremy Renner, who was introduced in the previous film as William Brandt, Simon Pegg as bumbling tech guy Benji Dunn, and Ving Rhames as computer expert Luther Stickwell. Alec Baldwin makes an entrance as a CIA Director, and Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson stars as the as-yet-unnamed female lead.

The plot for the fifth film follows Hunt who is on the run from the Syndicate, a highly organized group of skilled rogue assassins. The trailer sees Cruise as Hunt dangling precariously from the side of an Airbus A400M Atlas 5,000 feet in the air — a stunt film insiders are saying is all Cruise, without the aid of a stunt double.

The move mimics the 52-year-old actor’s daring climb and swing from the one of the top floors of Dubai’s 163-floor Burj Khalifa skyscraper for the 2011 “Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol.”

Cruise reportedly did most of the stunt scenes in the new movie, including a BMW car chase scene in Morocco, and stunt jumping from the roof of the Vienna State Opera. Cruise was also said to have been narrowly missed by a moving double-decker bus while shooting in London.

Most of the actor’s box office successes have been driven by the four previous “Mission Impossible” films, the grand total of which have grossed $2 billion worldwide. Only one of Cruise’s films outside the franchise, “Edge of Tomorrow” in 2014, reached just over $100 million at the U.S. box office.

New ‘X-Files’ Series News, Update: Revival Series to Be Green-Lighted Soon

Cast member David Duchovny attends the movie premiere of ”The X-Files: I Want to Believe” at the Grauman’s Chinese theatre in Hollywood, California July 23, 2008. The movie opens in the U.S. on July 25.

Christian Post Report – Ever since the news broke out a few months ago that the hit ’90s sci-fi/supernatural thriller TV drama series “The X-Files” will be getting a revival treatment by Fox, fans have already been wondering about its development. Here’s the good news we heard.

The highly anticipated “The X-Files” reboot series is now close to be given the go-signal.

“Fox is close to giving an official green-light to a revival of their iconic science fiction series, which originally aired between 1993 and 2002. Per sources, the network has settled on a “short-stack” order for the revival and while the exact size of the order is yet-to-be-determined, I’m told it will be less than ten episodes,” TV Wise wrote.

Sources said that the TV network has already settled on a “short-stack” order of the revival series. Although the “exact size of the order” still remains unknown, people who are close to the matter said that there will be “less than ten episodes.”

This is different than what the Daily Mail previously confirmed. They reported that the reboot show will be having six episodes.

The main objective of the revival project would be to “close out the lingering storylines left by the series proper” and the second feature film based on it titled “I Want to Believe.”

The reasons pointing out to the network’s choice of getting the show up for a limited run includes the “story requirements” which was previously pointed out by the show’s creator Chris Carter.

The other reason, meanwhile, has something to do with “scheduling.” This particularly points out the busy schedules of series’ stars David Duchovny who is currently involved with NBC’s crime drama “Aquarius” and Gillian Anderson who is tied to the popular psychological series “Hannibal.”

It was then suggested that the production for the X-Files revival could happen this summer.

Is ISIS a Copycat? ‘Rivalry’ With Boko Haram Inspired Brutal Abductions of Christians, Yazidis in Iraq, Says Rights Lawyer

Emmanuel Ogebe (Photo: The Christian Post / Samuel Smith)

Nigerian human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe (right) explains the implications that the merger between ISIS and Boko Haram will have in West Africa during a discussion at the Hudson Institute in Washington D.C. on March 23, 2015.

Christian Post Report – WASHINGTON – Nigerian human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe insinuated that ISIS’ systemic abductions of religious minorities in Iraq last summer were inspired by Boko Haram’s kidnapping of over 276 Chibok schoolgirls last April.

Ogebe, who became the youngest law graduate in Nigeria and was exiled to the United States as a political detainee, explained at an event hosted by the Hudson Institute on Monday, that after Boko Haram abducted the schoolgirls in the town of Chibok in April 2014, the terrorist organization Al Qaeda issued a statement condemning the group’s kidnappings. He further explained that although Al Qaeda decried Boko Haram’s abduction of the girls, the Al Qaeda offshoot, ISIS, responded in the opposite manner.

“What was ISIS response?” Ogebe asked. “ISIS’ response to the Chibok schoolgirls was to begin abducting Yazidis and Christians in Iraq. That seemed to be the point of where ISIS said, ‘You know what, if these guys are getting this kind of condemnation from Al Qaeda, let’s [relate] with them. They are good guys to get into bed with.'”

“Their relationship has been one of grudging admiration and rivalry,” Ogebe added.

As ISIS began seizing large areas of northern Iraq throughout the summer months of 2014, the group made a systematic habit of sexually enslaving the religious minority women, while killing off the religious minority men in the villages that they raided and conquered.

Although the number of Iraqi citizens killed in 2014 was approximately 17,000, thanks in large part to the rise of ISIS, Ogebe reasoned that Boko Haram was a deadlier group than ISIS last year. According to the United Nations, Boko Haram accounted for nearly 10,000 deaths, while it displaced nearly 1.5 million in 2014.

Even though ISIS has released publicized mass execution videos, with one of the group’s latest videos showing the beheading of 21 Coptic Christians in Libya, Ogebe stated that Boko Haram’s mass executions tend to involve many more victims than ISIS’ mass executions.

Ogebe described an instance in September 2013 where Boko Haram militants beheaded over 150 Christians by setting up a roadblock and disguising themselves as Nigerian military personnel. As people drove through the roadblock, the militants checked individuals’ identification cards to see if they were Christian. As Christians went through the roadblock and were identified, they were all abruptly beheaded with a chainsaw.

“You have cars lined about 10 kilometers patiently waiting for their deaths not knowing that this was a roadblock set up by Boko Haram,” Ogebe said. “[T]hey used chainsaws because they wanted to quickly go through the traffic.”

Although Boko Haram is as deadly, if not deadlier than ISIS, the international community does not recognize that because ISIS knows how to publicize its atrocities and the international media is so focused on ISIS, Ogebe said.

“The reason why Boko Haram’s atrocities are way more egregious than ISIS and have not garnered attention is partly because ISIS is more tech savvy than Boko Haram,” Ogebe added. “A merger of Boko Haram and ISIS is equivalent to the merger of Delta and Northwest creating the super airline. This doesn’t mean higher ticket prices, it just means a higher body count.”

Chibok girls (Photo: The Christian Post / Samuel Smith)

Four Chibok girls, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in April 2014 and later escaped, acting as silent witnesses during a Hudson Institute discussion on Boko Haram in Washington D.C. on March 23, 2015.

Also in attendance at the Hudson Institute on Monday were four Chibok schoolgirls who escaped from the Boko Haram abduction last April. The four stood in front of the audience and acted as silent witnesses to the atrocity.

Speaking on behalf of the 200-plus other girls that are still being held by Boko Haram, Bukky Shonibare, a leading team member of the #BringBackOurGirls Campaign, stressed that it is shameful that nearly a year after the abduction, no progress has been made by the Nigerian government or international community in attempting to rescue the girls.

Shonibare explained that the girls who have been abducted are likely being used as militants’ wives and a few of them that have escaped have come back pregnant.

“This is a Nigerian problem and if we don’t deal with it then we are setting ourselves up for a bigger problem,” Shonibare said.”We feel something that if the government of Nigeria and the international community and the whole world does not respond to this issue of victims of insurgency, especially internationally displaced persons and refugees, then there is a ticking time bomb.”

Shonibare additionally demanded for people all over the world to urge their governments to take action to help return the Chibok girls to their family. Shonibare stressed that allowing groups like Boko Haram to kidnap over 200 girls and get away with it sends the wrong message to the “human race.”

“In 22 days it will be one year since the abduction,” Shonibare stated. “That sends a strong message to us, not just to Nigeria but to human race, that two-hundred-and-something girls can be abducted somewhere and 343 days after they are not yet back. That is a big problem that we have to look into.”

Televangelist Benny Hinn Suffers Heart Attack After Trip to Brazil; Family Asks for Prayers as He Recovers in Hospital

Evangelist and faith healer Benny Hinn is seen in this undated file photo provided by his ministry.

Christian Post Report – Popular miracle-working faith healer and televangelist, Benny Hinn, 62, is now recovering in a hospital after suffering a heart attack after an overseas trip and his family is asking for prayers.

Hinn’s daughter, Jessica Hinn Koulianos, made the revelation in a message on the Benny Hinn Ministries website late Monday evening.

“Recently he (Hinn) returned to California after ministering to crowds of over 100,000 people in Brazil, including over 2,000 pastors and leaders from all over South America. It was truly a remarkable nation-shaking event. And while it was a rewarding journey, after he arrived home he suddenly began battling fatigue and shortness of breath. For those of you who know my Dad, you know that he never stops; so when he spent over a week in bed, we knew something was wrong. I flew to California to be with him and insisted that he see a doctor. On Friday, he consulted with his local physician and was admitted to the hospital, where he was treated for lack of oxygen in his cardiovascular system,” wrote Koulianos.

Televangelist Benny Hinn, ministering recently in Brazil, places a hand over his heart.

According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute Hinn’s symptoms are indicative of a heart attack.
“A heart attack happens when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a section of heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked and the heart can’t get oxygen. If blood flow isn’t restored quickly, the section of heart muscle begins to die,” the institute website explains.

“Heart attacks are a leading killer of both men and women in the United States,” it adds.

Hinn’s daughter explained that: “Once he got in the hospital he experienced almost immediate relief and has continued to grow stronger each day. At this moment, his physicians are conducting thorough tests, the results of which have been very positive. He is alert and in good spirits, and we expect he will be released later this week.”

Already according to Koulianos, Hinn’s family has been receiving an outpouring of support. “My dad, Pastor Benny Hinn, asked me to send you a quick message from the family, so that you could hear it straight from me. He asked me to share, from the depths of his heart, how much he appreciates your outpouring of love and support, and for the best gift you can give: your prayers. He also asked me to convey to you how much he loves each of you and thanks you for all you’re doing for the ministry and for the kingdom,” she said.

“By God’s grace and with the help of your prayers, we are told to expect a complete recovery. More importantly, his doctors are assuring him that within a very short time he will be on his feet ministering around the world again, just as he has for over 40 years,” she said.

Hinn is considered a prosperity preacher who teaches “seed-faith giving” that people “reap” what they “sow.” Last year, he asked his supporters to donate $1000 to his ministry suggesting that they would enter a “new dimension of favor and increase.” His TV program This Is Your Day! is among the world’s most-watched Christian programs, seen daily in 200 countries.

The Pirate Bay Suddenly Goes Offline

The Pirate Bay The Pirate Bay/Facebook

Christian Post Report – The Pirate Bay recently went offline at the start of the weekend following news it had successfully thrown off ISP blocks after it returned earlier this year.

Peer-to-peer file sharing website The Pirate Bay alarmed users when it became unresponsive and went offline Friday, despite news that emerged it was effectively thwarting blocks from ISPs after its resurgence at the beginning of February following its December 2014 closure.

Showing an error message: “Error 521 Web server is down,” this is apparently not the first time the BitTorrent site has exhibited this message. Users also experienced the same issues earlier this month when the popular media file sharing site went offline.

The hosting error message indicated the site’s web server, managed by CloudFlare wasn’t returning a connection. However, CloudFlare offers an Always Online feature that allows users to access The Pirate Bay’s offline pages, enabling them to “continue to surf a snapshot of the site,” a message displayed read.

Users reported the site was down, but were able to access and download from the site via https://thepiratebay.se/search. Some users also reported erratic access, but continued trying to log in and were able to access the site after a few tries.

With the website down, other file sharing sites like Kicka– Torrents, Yi-Fy, TorrentDay and Demonoid absorbed some of the fallout with users gravitating to their sites after TPB access proved unsuccessful.

The Pirate Bay’s Nacka station data center was raided by Swedish Polish in December 2014 and was shut down for violating copyright law. After a teaser countdown clock appeared on its site in January, featuring a phoenix rising from the ashes, it came back online in February 1, 2015, equipped with new ISP block evading capabilities courtesy of its partnership with CloudFlare, a US-based domain name server and content delivery network system.

‘Teen Mom’ Star Amber Portwood Talks Life After Prison, Staying Sober

Christian Post Report – Amber Portwood was sent to jail for 17 months for drug abuse and domestic violence charges, and now the “Teen Mom OG” star is returning for a new season of MTV’s reality series and says that she is determined to show that she has changed and is getting her life back on track.

“I didn’t want people to have a bad taste in their mouth of things that happened in the past,” she told People magazine. “I thought, ‘This is my chance, don’t blow it.'”

Portwood made headlines when she made the decision to report to jail back in June 2012 rather than attend a court mandated rehab program. She tells People that in a way, being in prison saved her life.

“The only thing I could see happening to me if I [hadn’t] gone to prison is I would have died. I would have overdosed. When you’re an addict you know what your bottom,” she explained.

Portwood revealed that she earned her G.E.D. while in prison and is now trying to decide between colleges.

“Obviously I had some speed bumps. But it’s never too late to try to get your life back and so something positive,” she tells the magazine.

“The whole time I was in there I worked my [expletive] off. There were hundreds of hours of drug addiction classes. I did extra classes, parenting and anger management and even started teaching. I put myself in there for a reason so I didn’t want to make it a waste,” she adds.

Now, aside from being on the “Teen Mom OG,” Portwood is busy raising her daughter Leah. She has also found love with 43-year-old fiancé Matt Baier.

“He’s amazing, funny, carry and loving,” said Portwood. “We want to be engaged for at least a year before we really jump into anything. We want everything in place.”

Chris Brown Celebrates End of Probation in Rihanna Assault Case

Chris Brown’s probation ends after Judge Brandlin found that the singer has completed his 1,000 hours of community service.

Christian Post Report – Chris Brown’s felony probation in an assault case over his 2009 attack on ex-girlfriend Rihanna has ended.

Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin ended Brown’s probation on Friday, March 21, more than six years after the R&B singer brutally attacked his then-girlfriend hours before the Grammy Awards.

The Los Angeles District Attorney confirmed to E! News that the 25-year old’s probation ended when Judge Brandlin found that Brown had officially completed his 1,000 hours of community service and the Probation Department concluded that there were no violations. Brandlin’s decision marks the first time since mid-2009 that Brown will not be under the supervision of court or probation officials.

The singer and his attorney, Mark Geragos, hugged in the courtroom and again in a courthouse elevator. After the hearing, Brown tweeted, “I’m off probation!!!!! Thank the Lord!!!!!”

“I couldn’t be more delighted,” said Geragos after the hearing. “He is in a spot right now and a place right now that I couldn’t be prouder of him.”

Brown was 19 years old when he attacked Rihanna in a sports car after leaving a pre-Grammy Awards party. Brown fled the scene but turned himself in to police hours later and was charged with felony assault.

TMZ posted a photo of Rihanna’s face, which showed extensive injuries. In a search warrant affidavit, it was revealed that Brown repeatedly punched Rihanna, bit her ear, and choked her to the point that she almost lost consciousness.

Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault in June 2009 and was ordered to stay away from the “Umbrella” singer. As part of his sentence, Brown was required to undergo violence counseling. Judge Brandlin also ordered Brown into rehab, which resulted in the singer being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and complications from substance abuse.
