Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is ‘among greatest owners in NFL’: The significance of a servant heart

“I want to thank the Lord for blessing us with this
opportunity. The glory belongs to him. And this trophy belongs to the best fans
in the National Football League.”

This is how Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt accepted the
Lamar Hunt Trophy when his team won the AFC Championship on Sunday.

His testimony glorifying Jesus was no surprise to me because
it was my privilege to be his pastor for many years. Clark and his family were
always faithful in worship and gracious with their personal support. I have watched
them serve Jesus and have long been impressed with their humility and servant
hearts.

The Hunt legacy

Clark’s father was one of the giants in American sports history. Lamar Hunt founded the American Football League, known as the American Football Conference (AFC) today. He was also instrumental in founding Major League Soccer and its predecessor, the North American Soccer League. He was a co-founder of World Championship Tennis as well. He is a member of the Hall of Fame in all three sports.

Lamar Hunt is also known for
naming the NFL’s championship game the “Super Bowl.”

Lamar founded the Dallas Texans,
which became the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963. After his death, his son, Clark,
inherited the team along with his siblings in 2005. Clark serves as the team’s
CEO and represents the Chiefs at all owner’s meetings.

Now his team is competing in
Super Bowl LIV.

Making a difference

Clark told reporters before Sunday’s game that his desire to win the AFC trophy isn’t just because his father’s name is on it: “If we win that trophy, it’s not for me, it’s not for our family. To some degree it’s for the team and the coaching staff, but it’s really for our great fans.” The article’s headline is not surprising: “Clark Hunt’s words prove he’s among greatest owners in NFL.”

Popular End Times Televangelist Jack Van Impe Dies at 88-Years-Old

Controversial yet wildly popular end times televangelist Jack Van Impe has died at the age of 88.

Jack Van Impe Ministries International confirmed the passing of the eschatological pastor in a statement on Saturday calling him a “good and faithful servant.” 

“The beloved Dr. Jack Van Impe was welcomed into Heaven by His blessed Savior and Lord who he had so faithfully served in ministry for over 70 years,” the statement read.

“Please pray for his beloved wife and lifelong ministry partner Rexella and their families as they grieve this immense loss and for wisdom as she and the Board lead the ministry in the days ahead.”

Van Impe – often referred to as the “walking Bible” for his expansive memorization of Bible verses – first gained popularity through his television show Jack Van Impe Presents in the late 80s and 90s. The show – which starred both him and his wife Rexella – featured a controversial segment of the couple analyzing current news headlines through the lens of the second coming and end times prophecies. 

According to Christianity Today, Van Impe was no stranger to controversy. Reportedly, after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the television pastor became increasingly worried about Islam. During Barack Obama’s presidency, Van Impe even claimed that Obama was part of a Muslim plot to infiltrate the United States.

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Tennessee Titans in yesterday’s AFC Conference Championship game. The San Francisco 49ers won at home against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Conference Championship. Oddsmakers are favoring the Chiefs slightly in Super Bowl LIV. 

Since this is not a sports column and our nation is celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, you may be wondering why I am leading with these results. Here’s what the teams who competed yesterday and Dr. King have in common: they illustrate the cultural leverage of excellence. 

Faith and football 

The Chiefs are led by CEO Clark Hunt. I was privileged to be his pastor for many years in Dallas and can attest personally to his family’s strong commitment to Jesus. 

When his team won the AFC Championship yesterday, Clark told the world, “I want to thank the Lord for blessing us with this opportunity. The glory belongs to him. And this trophy belongs to the best fans in the National Football League.” 

Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill has made clear his faith in Jesus over the years as well, recently telling reporters: “I pray before every game. I spend time with God before I get to the stadium and then when I lace up my cleats, I thank God for the opportunity to go out there and attempt to glorify him.” 

By contrast, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has made news in recent years for the fact that he no longer identifies as a Christian. Tens of thousands of pastors and other church staff members are becoming retirement age each year. We have not seen anything like this phenomenon. These church leaders are reaching retirement age, but they still have many years of active ministry and life left in them. How will they respond? How will churches respond? 

We are watching this trend with fascination at Church Answers. Let’s look at some of the key issues unfolding. 

  • Some churches are fine with older pastors remaining in their roles. Others are not. We see many churches where the members don’t think twice about having a 60-something or 70-something pastor. They see their pastors as fully capable and fully energetic to continue leading. Other churches are ready for the older pastors to move on. This latter disposition is exacerbated when the church is struggling and/or in decline.
  • Too many retirement-age pastors don’t have options because of financial realities. I’ve addressed this issue in an earlier post. Though my observations are anecdotal, well over half of the pastors with whom I have conversed are woefully prepared financially when they hit their mid-60s. It’s usually a case of churches failing to care for pastors and pastors failing to plan for themselves.
  • The most common option for pastors leaving their role is to become interim or part-time pastors in other churches. The opportunities for this ministry are increasing regularly. At any given point, we could have over 50,000 churches seeking an…

The church is looking forward to serving alongside Pastor Jay and his family as a beacon of light for their community. Christopher Tolkien, Son of J.R.R. Tolkien, Dies at 95-Years-Old

Christopher Tolkien, son of famed author J.R.R. Tolkien and his wife Edith, has passed away at the age of 95.

The Tolkien Society announced the passing of Christopher on Twitter Thursday afternoon writing, “Christopher Tolkien has died at the age of 95. The Tolkien Society sends its deepest condolences to Baillie, Simon, Adam, Rachel and the whole Tolkien family.”

The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Born in Leeds in 1924, Christopher was the youngest of three.

According to science fiction and fantasy book website TOR.com, Christopher was his father’s intended audience for his famous work, The Hobbit. The Guardian reports that Christopher was even responsible for drawing many of the original maps for his father’s Lord of the Rings novels.

When the elder Tolkien died in 1973, Tolkien left his literary estate to Christopher who would work to continue his father’s legacy.

TOR.com reports that Christopher spent time editing and organizing his father’s papers and in 1977, he published The Silmarillion. The prequel to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books and movies, The Silmarillion – which was picked up to be made into a TV show for…
