victim’s message in court to Catholic priest jailed for sexually abusing six children

Francis McDermott, 75, abused six victims, some as young as 10, in London, Norwich, and High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, between 1971 and 1978, Aylesbury Crown Court heard.

Two of his victims read statements during Thursday’s sentencing hearing which recounted the “devastating impact” he had on their lives.

One said: “I hate you. There is no one to blame but you,” while another described how her family had all been “married and baptised by a disgusting monster”.

Judge Catherine Tulk told McDermott he had “turned down so many opportunities to admit your wrongdoing”.

She noted the irony that one of the central tenets of the Catholic Church was confession.

The offences were reported to the church on two separate occasions but were not passed on to police after McDermott denied the allegations, the court heard.

McDermott was found guilty of 18 counts of historic child sex offences following a trial.

Trevor Burke QC, defending McDermott, said the defendant had been a Catholic priest “all his adult life” but said “for a period of seven years where he had completely lost his way”.

Jerry Falwell, Jr. Says He Will Raise His Granddaughter as a Girl, Some Liberty University Students Protest

Jerry Falwell, Jr. Says He Will Raise His Granddaughter as a Girl, Some Liberty University Students Protest

Some Liberty University students are protesting against Jerry Falwell Jr. and his wife, Becki Falwell, after the couple said they would raise their granddaughter “as a girl.”

“She’s our granddaughter, and we’re raising her as a girl,” Mrs. Falwell said. “We’re not letting her have a choice. God makes the choice of what the babies are going to be and God decided she would be a girl.”

According to the Washington Examiner, the Falwells were speaking at a satellite Conservative Political Action Conference event that also featured Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former Fox News commentator.

The Falwells also said their granddaughter always has a baby doll with her, while their own sons grew up around guns.

In response, some 30 students at Liberty University carried waving gay pride flags and signs on campus supporting transgender rights.

The signs said, “LGBTQ Lives Matter” and “Hate is a choice, being transgender is not.”

“We’re out here mainly to start conversations, but to also be supportive,” said Elizabeth Axley, a sophomore demonstrator who is bisexual. “Yes, this is a Christian campus and, yes, Jerry Falwell Jr. has insinuated that he does not care about you but that does not mean that every Liberty student does not care about you — we love you.”

Caleb Fitzpatrick, a senior…

Justin Welby on what Disney’s The Incredibles can teach us about evangelism

In the Great Hall at Lambeth Palace, a large, tiled room that’s not heated to protect the old books lining the walls, Justin Welby gave the annual Deo Gloria lecture, hosted by the London School of Theology.

Referencing the baddie Syndrome, who nearly loses out to the superhero Mr Incredible from the children’s film because he is lured into overtalking, Welby said: “Let’s be honest. How much of our evangelism is monologuing?” he asked. “Any credible witness requires us to be in dialogue with the other.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury was speaking about how to balance evangelism with respecting people of other faiths and told the audience that Christians need to listen when they speak to people about their faith and remember that the Christian message has been intertwined with Imperialism in the past.

He started by saying becoming a Christian was for him the best decision he ever made and was through no work of his own, praising God’s grace, he said: “This good news is free, undeserved, a sure gift from God, available to all.

He then explained the danger that sometimes follows: “When we make our evangelism a product in the market place or an expression of cultural superiority, then we are falling short of the message given to us, in fact we are blaspheming and denying it.

“It is possible to embark upon evangelism in a way that denies, and even contradicts, the very…

Catholics, Protestants, Evangelicals Divided on Alcohol, Report Finds

Catholics, Protestants, Evangelicals Divided on Alcohol, Report Finds

Catholics and Protestants in the United States have major a difference in drinking habits, as do mainline Protestants and evangelicals, according to a new Pew Research Center report.

Sixty percent of Catholics say they have consumed alcohol in the past 30 days, compared to 51 percent of Protestants who say the same.

Yet there is a divide within Protestantism: 66 percent of white mainline Protestants have consumed alcohol within the past 30 days, while 48 percent of black Protestants and 45 percent of white evangelical Protestants have done so.

By comparison, 65 percent of Americans who are unaffiliated with any religion say they’ve consumed alcohol the past month.

“The relationship between religion and alcohol consumption remains a nuanced one, and not all U.S. religious groups eschew alcohol to the same degree,” Pew’s Philip Schwadel wrote in an analysis.

White evangelical Protestants are most likely to view alcohol consumption as morally wrong, too. Twenty-three percent of them say drinking alcohol is morally wrong, compared to 13 percent of black Protestants and 7 percent of white mainline Protestants who say the same. Fifteen percent of Catholics say consuming alcohol is wrong.

“In the United States and many other countries, religiously active people are less likely to drink alcohol than those who are not as religious,” Schwadel wrote….

Christian campaigners deliver petition on modern slavery

A number of organisations including CARE (Christian Action Research and Education) are asking the UK Government to back the Modern Slavery Victim Support Bill.

The bill, which is sponsored by Lord McColl of Dulwich and Iain Duncan Smith MP, would guarantee that all confirmed victims of slavery in England and Wales would receive comprehensive support including accommodation, counselling, healthcare, a support worker and legal advice for at least 12 months after the authorities grant them victim status, instead of the current 45 days.

The campaigners say it would also guarantee their immigration status for the first 12 months to ensure the victims can focus on recovering and rebuilding their lives free from worrying about the threat of deportation, often back to countries which wouldn’t guarantee their protection from their traffickers.

Speaking to Premier, CARE’s Senior Policy Officer on Human Trafficking, Louise Gleich said: “There have been over 60,000 different actions that the public have taken to show their support for Lord McColl’s Bill and to show that victims of modern slavery really need much longer support than the government is currently providing.

“If victims don’t have protection, support and stability, then they can’t give evidence to police in the courts, which means that traffickers go free and the cycle of exploitation just continues.”

Over 5,000…

Democrats Push Pro-Kitten Bill, Days After Backing Human Infanticide

Democrats Push Pro-Kitten Bill, Days After Backing Human Infanticide

A leading pro-life leader is criticizing House and Senate Democrats for promoting a bill that would protect kittens in research experiments from harm, days after the same Democrats opposed a bill that would protect human babies who survive abortion.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, a Democrat from Oregon, introduced the Kittens In Traumatic Testing Ends Now Act, on March 7, which would halt experiments within the U.S. Department of Agriculture that cause pain to kittens. A USDA laboratory breeds kittens and euthanizes them when the experiment is complete. Nearly 3,000 kittens have been used in research since 1982, according to one USDA administrator.

“The KITTEN Act will protect these innocent animals from being needlessly euthanized in government testing, and make sure that they can be adopted by loving families instead,” Merkley said in a press release.

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, noted that Merkley had voted days earlier against a bill that would require medical care for babies who survive abortion. It was known as the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

“‘Ridiculous’ doesn’t begin to describe a party that tells America to back away from the tables of crying newborns while it rushes to the rescue of kittens instead,” Perkins said in his Wednesday Washington Update. “I suppose we should also tell firefighters when…

Anne Graham Lotz delivers health update

The daughter of legendary evangelist Billy Graham has been battling cancer over the past year.

In a blog post, the 70 year old said: “Your prayers have helped carry me through surgery and seven chemo infusions that have stretched out over six months. Praise God! Most of my battle with cancer has been won! Even as I have struggled with severe side-effects, I have experienced deep peace, unceasing joy, and great expectancy of blessing to come! Thank you!

“Now I face a month of daily radiation beginning around the end of this month. I also will continue an infusion every three weeks until October 2019 to help insure the cancer will not return. As so many of you know, cancer is a wicked disease. As God brings me to your mind, I would treasure your continued prayers.”

Graham Lotz has three children. Her husband Daniel died in 2015.

Mammoth Statue of Jesus Planned for Russian Site Once Set Aside for Lenin

Mammoth Statue of Jesus Planned for Russian Site Once Set Aside for Lenin

MOSCOW (RNS) — Authorities in Vladivostok, the largest city in far eastern Russia, are planning to erect a gigantic statue of Jesus Christ on a site once designated for a monument of Vladimir Lenin.

The statue, which has not yet been approved by the Russian Orthodox Church, is to be 125 feet high – the same height as the Christ the Redeemer monument in Rio de Janeiro, according to blueprints made public by Vyatsky Posad, a Russian Orthodox Christian center. The statue will stand on top of a hill looking east over the Pacific Ocean.

Soviet authorities issued orders for the construction of a 98-foot-high bronze statue of Lenin at the site in 1972. Another statue, of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, was planned to be built on a neighboring hill. But construction hitches meant the plans were repeatedly postponed, before eventually being scrapped altogether in 1990.

Supporters of the Jesus statue are enthusiastic, despite the lack of details about the project. Descriptions of the statue as a “symbol of the unity of the Russian people” that would “bless” ships leaving and arriving in the port city were later deleted from the Vyatsky Posad’s website, for reasons that remain unclear. Attempts by Religion News Service to contact the Vyatsky Center for comment were unsuccessful.

Other Russian media outlets, however, have published blueprints for the project, and…

The college scam, Felicity Huffman, and Lori Loughlin: Two biblical responses

Felicity Huffman is an Emmy winner and Oscar-nominated actress who is best known for her role in Desperate Housewives. She is also married to acclaimed actor William H. Macy.

Lori Loughlin has been known to most Americans as “Aunt Becky,” the wholesome maternal influence on ABC’s Full House. She has also starred in numerous Hallmark movies.

On Tuesday, as the Washington Post reports, “both actresses had their reputations shattered as they were charged with fraud and conspiracy.”

Their stories will forever be linked to a scandal that has made global headlines this week.

“Operation Varsity Blues”

Huffman was reportedly met by FBI agents with their guns drawn Tuesday morning at her Los Angeles home. She was later released on a $250,000 bond. She allegedly paid $15,000 disguised as a charitable donation so her daughter could participate in a college entrance-exam cheating scam.

According to the FBI, Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer J. Mossimo Giannulli, paid bribes totaling $500,000 “in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team—despite the fact that they did not participate in crew—thereby facilitating their admission to USC.” Giannulli was released on a $1 million bond; Loughlin surrendered to authorities yesterday and was released on a $1 million bond as well.

They are the best-known of the fifty people in six states now ensnared in a massive cheating scandal. Dubbed “Operation Varsity Blues” by the FBI, this is the largest college admissions scheme the Department of Justice has ever prosecuted.

Sports coaches and professionals from USC, Georgetown University, Yale, Stanford, UCLA, the University of Texas, and Wake Forest have been implicated. (None of the universities has been charged with crimes.) SAT and ACT examination administrators and employees of a college counseling and…
