LESSON INTRODUCTION:
Love is a fundamental characteristics of who God is. 1 John 4:7-8. Everything God does is prompted and influenced by His love. The Bible uses several different words for “love” in the Hebrew and Greek, interchanging them depending on context. Some of these word’s mean “affectionate love”; others indicate “friendship”; and still others, “erotic/sexual love” as we “sacrificial/charitable love”.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Corinthians 7:2-5
Apostle Paul gave three (3) instructions to believers on marriage between verses 2-5. These instructions are stated below:
i. Let every man or woman get his own wife and her own husband. 1 Cor. 7:2.
ii. Let the husband and wife render due benevolence to one another. 1 Cor. 7:3
iii. Let the husband and wife defraud not one another.

What are the reasons behind these instructions?
i. You marry to avoid formication. 1 Cor. 7:2
ii. You render benevolence in marriage to strengthen the marriage. The word “benevolence” means : Disposition to do good. It also means lovely, kindness, gift, etc. When you sow love, you will reap love.
iii. You should not defraud because, the moment of doing so, Satan will tempt you.

Other guides for lasting marriage from the Bible passages are:

i. Give yourself to fasting and prayers. Vs. 5b.
ii. Surrender your power to one another. Vs. 4. Power here means exclusive authority and control over his or her body. This authority should be surrender to one another in love.

ii. Explain the Greek word “eros” as the sexual love or feeling of arousal that are shared between people who are physically attracted to each other.
iii. Find out from students whether erotic love has places or root in the Bible.

The expected answers are as follows
a. Yes. It has biblical support if the couple are legally married. Matt. 29:5.
b. Yes. Because the Bible admonishes couple not to deny each other with erotic/sexual love. 1 Cor. 7:2-5.
c. Yes. Because sexual intimacy prevents temptation that could lead to sin.1 Cor. 7:5
d. Sexual intimacy between couple could begin with for play to produce sexual enjoyment. Songs of Solomon 1:13-15; Eccl.4:11; Prov. 5:19-20.

iv. Under what condition can erotic love become sin?
Answer: When it is perverted by the Satan and list and when it is expected outside marriage. Rom. 1:24-28; 1 Cor. 6:9; Rev. 21.:8; 1 Thess. 4:3.

v. What can Christians do to avoid perversion of erotic love?
Answer: Couple could be guided by Christian counselors and godly literatures. Hosea 4:6.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Why should a believer not behave in the same way an unbeliever should behave in the expression of erotic/sexual love?

i. Explain the term “Phileo/Philia” as a brotherly/friendship love which is exhibited in a close, friendly relationship. Prov. 18:24.
ii. Give examples of Phileo in the account of David and Jonathan. 1 Sam. 18:1-3.
iii. Give characteristics of Phileo love as follows:
a. Feeling of warmth and affection towards another person.
b. It cherishes each other and expect affection in return. Rom. 12:10.

iv. Question: What lessons do Phileo love transfer to married couple?
a. Couples are to cherish one another with warm affection.
b. Couple should exhibit sense of comradeship and friendship and must be willing to share and communicate their thoughts, plans, dreams and feelings. Eccl. 4:9-10.
c. Lesson of confidence in each other’s attitude and behaviours.
d. Phileo love scores the marriage performance satisfactory coupled with the bedroom passion.

v. Question: What is the biblical position/God’s desire for believers with regards to Phileo?

Apple Removes Christian App for Being Anti-Gay

Apple Removes Christian App for Being Anti-Gay

Apple has removed a Christian ministry’s app from its store after LGBT supporters said the app was “dangerous” and “bigoted.”

Living Hope Ministries created the app about three years ago.

The gay rights group, Truth Wins Out, however, filed a petition at Change.org saying the app was “hateful.”

“The app falsely portrays being gay as an ‘addiction’, ‘sickness’, and ‘sin,'” the petition said.

After the decision, Truth Wins Out executive director Wayne Besen said Apple did “the right thing.”

“We thank Apple for exemplifying corporate responsibility and taking swift action to remove a dangerous app that stigmatizes and demeans LGBT people,” he said.

Ricky Chalette, executive director of Living Hope Ministries, however, says the ministry is “saddened” about the decision to remove the app.

“Regardless of their decision we will continue to make the app and our services available to those who seek them,” he said.

“We are a ministry that for nearly 30 years has helped individuals resolve their feelings they deem incongruent with their faith,” he said. “We help people deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ through Bible study and accountability. We walk with them to align their lives with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

“From chaos and confusion they often find peace, hope, and a deeper sense of personal wholeness. Our ministry is free and…

Open Heaven 29 December 2018 – Riches Stored in Heaven

Open Heaven 29 December 2018 Saturday Daily Devotional By Pastor E. A. Adeboye – Riches Stored in Heaven

Topic: Riches Stored in Heaven (Open Heaven 29 December 2018)

Memorise: “Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.” Luke 12:33

Read: Luke 12:30-37(KJV)

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

Bible in One Year: Zechariah 7-10, John 20:1-23

Open Heaven 29 December 2018 Saturday MESSAGE:

Prosperity is a very good thing. In fact, God wants His children to prosper and live in abundance. So many good things come with being rich. For example, a rich man is more likely to be respected and listened to than a poor man. Ecclesiastes 9:15-16 says:

15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. 16 Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.”

However, as good as riches are, they never really satisfy. We even understand through Ecclesiastes 5:12 that the abundance of a man’s riches keeps him from good sleep. The humbling truth is that no matter how many treasures a man amasses here on earth, he will never take a penny with him when he dies.

In today’s Bible reading, our Lord Jesus Christ advised us to store our riches in heaven for a number of reasons. Firstly, riches stored in heaven are secure, because there are no moths, thieves or other devourers in heaven. Secondly, your heart will be wherever your riches are, and so if your riches are stored in heaven, your heart will also concentrate on the things of heaven (Matthew 6:21). Also, a person whose riches are stored in heaven will have just one master: God. Money has become the master of some people, and as the Bible says, no man can serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). The Holy Spirit makes it clear that the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10).

How then can we store up our riches in heaven? Jesus answered this question in our memory verse, instructing us to give to the poor. This He said would guarantee us treasures in heaven. Paul also made the same connection in 1 Timothy 6:17-19, saying:

17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

We can also store up our riches in heaven by investing in things that bring people to Jesus: financially supporting evangelism, bringing your tithes into God’s storehouse, and much more. Prospering here on earth is important, but nothing is as important as making it to heaven.

Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.

Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,

Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose,

It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne,

Baby Jesus Statue Returned, 90 Years after it Was Stolen

Baby Jesus Statue Returned, 90 Years after it Was Stolen

A small statue of baby Jesus that was stolen from a New Jersey church was returned this year – nearly 90 years after it went missing.

The statue was taken from the nativity at Our Lady of Grace Church in Hoboken, N.J., in the 1930s and was presumably gone forever.

But a few months ago, church officials received a box in the mail from Florida with no return address. Rev. Alexander Santora called the police, believing it might contain something nefarious. Police then used a heat-detecting device and told Santona it was OK to open.

Inside the box were the baby Jesus and a note from the sender, who said the statue somehow came into possession of the grandfather and was never returned, NBC New York reported.

“Instead, he gave it to my mother after she was married, and she too kept it until her passing when it came to me. Knowing the story, I felt it should be returned to the rightful owner, and you will find it enclosed,” the note read.

The plaster statue was still in good condition.

“It’s never too late to always own up,” Santora told ABC New York. “Never too late to say I want to do what’s right, and that’s a universal message.”

Said parishioner Ignatious Camporeale, “Absolutely, we forgive them.”

RCCG Sunday School STUDENT Manual 30 December 2018, Lesson 18

TOPIC: Practical Love In Marriage (Part 1) [RCCG Sunday School STUDENT Manual 30 December 2018]

MEMORY VERSE: “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”1 John 3:18 (scroll down for RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL 30 DECEMBER 2018 HYMN)

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 7:2-5 (RCCG Sunday School STUDENT Manual 30 December 2018)

2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.

INTRODUCTION:
Love is a fundamental characteristic of who God is (1 John 4:7-8). Everything God does is prompted and influenced by His love. The Bible uses several different words for ‘’love’’ in the Hebrew and Greek, interchanging them depending on context. Some of these words mean ‘’affectionate love’’, others indicate ‘’friendship’’, and still others, ‘’erotic/sexual love’’ as well as ‘’sacrificial/charitable love’’.
In this study we shall examine each one as they apply to marriage.

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. “Eros” Erotic/Sexual love
  2. Phileo” Friendship love

  1. “EROS” – EROTIC/SEXUAL LOVE
Erotic/Sexual love is derived from the Greek word ‘’Eros’’. It is the word often used to express sexual love or the feelings of arousal that are shared between people who are physically attracted to each other. It has its godly fulfilment in a legal marriage between a man and a woman (Matthew 19:5). The Bible admonishes married couples not to deny each other of erotic/sexual love (1 Corinthians 7:2-5). Sexual intimacy in marriage strengthens the bond of the relationship. Foreplay and varieties of approach should be employed by Christian couples (Songs 1:13,15-16; Proverbs 5:19-20; Ecclesiastes 4:11). Knowledge on how to properly explore this type of love should be sought by Christian couples through counselling and Christian literatures (Hosea 4:6). Erotic/sexual activity in marriage should not be viewed as sin. However, it becomes a sin when it is perverted or expressed outside marriage (Romans 1:24-28; 1 Corinthians 6:9; Revelations 21:8; 1 Thessalonians 4:3).
  2. PHILEO”– FRIENDSHIP LOVE: Phileo/Philia refers to brotherly/friendship love and is most often exhibited in a close friendship (Proverbs 18:24). Best friends will display this generous love for each other as each seeks to make the other happy. The scriptural account of David and Jonathan is an excellent illustration of phileo (friendship) love (1 Samuel 18:1-3). Since phileo love involves feelings of warmth and affection toward another person, married couples should see each other as best of friends. This love cherishes the beloved but it expects a response (Romans 12:10). It is a love of relationship, comradeship, sharing, communication and friendship (Proverbs 17:17). Married couples should share in each other’s thoughts, feelings, attitudes, plans and dreams (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). They should also confide in each other the most intimate secrets, fears and needs that they would not share with a third-party (Proverbs 27:17). A marriage without phileo will be unsatisfactory no matter the passion in the bedroom. God’s desire for the husband and wife is that they tenderly love each other while they overlook each other’s faults and failures (1 Peter 4:8).

CONCLUSION:
The love that lasts longer than dinner and a movie must be made up of Eros (Physical attraction) and Phileo (Friendship). Do your best to be intimate with your partner in marriage.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Briefly explain your understanding of erotic/sexual love.
  2. What is the important of friendship love in marriage?

‘We Will not Forfeit Our Faith,’ Say Chinese Christians Whose Church Was Closed

‘We Will not Forfeit Our Faith,’ Say Chinese Christians Whose Church Was Closed

Christians in China may be discouraged in the face of a government crackdown on their faith, but they’re not backing down.

“We will not forfeit our faith because of suppression by the authorities,” Gu Baoluo, a Christian whose church was shut down in early December, told The New York Times.

Gu’s congregation, Early Rain Covenant Church, was closed by Chinese officials as part of an effort to limit the impact of the country’s unregistered churches, which house an estimated 30 million Christians.

Chinese police took Bibles, closed the church’s school and seminary, and charged the pastor, Wang Yi, with “inciting subversion,” the newspaper reported. He could spend five years in prison.

Gu is a rice grower who had looked forward to the church’s Christmas festivities, which included a pageant and the singing of carols. This year, instead, he went to a Christian friend’s home on Christmas Eve and worshipped quietly. They sang songs and prayed for their fellow believers who are in jail, The Times reported. Gu also exchanged messages with friends on an app that allows encrypted communication.

One goal of the crackdown is to increase allegiance to the ruling Communist Party. President Xi Jinping and other Communists believe Christianity “promotes Western values and ideals like human rights” that “conflict with the aims of…

TV Guide Calls Chris Pratt ‘Problematic,’ Says, He Doesn’t “Think before He Speaks”

TV Guide Calls Chris Pratt ‘Problematic,’ Says, He Doesn’t “Think before He Speaks”

In the magazine’s “12 Days of Chris-Mas” series, the TV Guide ranked Christian actor Chris Pratt as the “fifth best Chris,” while also noting that his offscreen life is often “problematic.”

In an article titled, “How to Love Chris Pratt Without Hating Yourself,” the TV guide writer Kaitlin Thomas points out all of the reasons she deems the Guardians of the Galaxy actor “problematic” and “divisive”

The writer starts out by marking Pratt as someone who is negligent with animals. The article notes an incident that happened seven years ago when Pratt and his then-wife Anna Faris took to social media to find a new home for their cat.

According to CBN News, Pratt and Faris were looking to relocate their cat because they wanted to start a family. Reportedly, Pratt did not mention his reason for relocating his elderly cat in his initial post and according to Gawker, he received a lot of hate.

The article builds on this topic by calling Pratt out for how he talks about raising animals for food. According to the TV Guide, Pratt whom they called an “avid hunter” is currently raising lambs for food on his farm. In a video posted to Instagram Pratt talked about his experience with the animals saying, “They are the happiest lambs on the planet, they are so sweet and then one day they wake up dead and they’re in my…

Russian TV channel RT sends chocolate Salisbury Cathedral to rival broadcaster

The cathedral was cited by Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, the Russian suspects of the Salisbury spy poisoning, in an interview with RT (formerly Russia Today, you can view interview at bottom of this page) as the tourist attraction they claimed they had come over to see.

When asked by the editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan why they were in Salisbury, they replied: “Our friends had been suggesting for a long time we visit this wonderful town.

“There’s the famous Salisbury cathedral, famous not only in Europe but in the whole world, it’s famous for its 123 metre spire. It’s famous for its clock, one of the first [of its kind] ever created in the whole world which is still working.”

They also claimed they had come over to see Stone Henge.

RT have now sent chocolate models of the city’s cathedral to news outlet TV Rain, a Russian independent network, who tweeted a picture of the gift and then commented: “Come for tea, we are afraid of it alone”.

The chocolate was in a plastic box and wrapped in RT ribbon.

Local MP and Christian, John Glen responded:…

Flexi-church attendance ‘on the rise in the UK’

According to a YouGov survey commissioned by The Times newspaper, the proportion coming to church “several times a year” rose from six per cent last year to seven per cent in 2018.

But only five per cent this year said they go every week – a decrease compared to six per cent in 2017.

Graham Nicholls from Affinity, a national network of 1,200 evangelical churches across the UK and Ireland, said churches should help cultivate committed attendance.

He told Premier: “More people are attending church, so that’s got to be a good thing; there’s an opportunity for them to get saved, discipled and so on.

“So, there’s good news. Obviously, there’s bad news in the sense of the lack of commitment.”

The proportion of people who said they only attend church for weddings and funerals fell from 63 per cent in 2016 to 61 per cent in 2017 and to 56 per cent in 2018.

Asked about attitudes towards casual church attendance, Graham Nicholls added: “What is often modelled in churches is that Christianity is a lifestyle or pick-me-up.

“We need to think about whether we’re making sure we’re including the whole gospel, calling people under the lordship of Christ, teaching them how to be happy and holy even in trouble.

“I…
