Text: 1 Chronicles 8:1-13 (KJV)

Key Verse: “Beriah also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aijalon, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath“ (1 Chronicles 8:13).

MESSAGE:

It is a terrible thing to pass through this life without leaving any worthy mark. It is true that everyone does some activities, but mere activities are not enough. The famous American inventor and businessman, Thomas A. Edison, captured this truth thus, “Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing.”

Genealogical listing, such as we have in today’s text, hardly has room for any significant comment on the lives of the names listed. All that we have is a hint of their position in the family tree, names and number of their offspring. But in verses 12 and 13, the Chronicler could not gloss over the worthy legacies of two sets of people. Their deeds got attached to their names.

The sons of Elpaal built Ono and Lod and their adjoining towns while Beriah and Shema, heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aijalon, drove away the inhabitants of Gath. Gath was one of the five principal cities of Israel’s long-standing enemies; the home of powerful figures like Goliath.

This is our time. Our history is still in the making. A new book of Chronicles is being compiled. Each of us has an ample chance to make a difference. The good news here is that the measuring scale is no longer about any superhuman exploits; rather, being faithful to God and, by His grace, living a holy life and impacting other people’s lives positively. It is about preaching the gospel and doing things that will promote God’s kingdom. The all-seeing and impartial God is keeping the record of our lives and will reward us accordingly.

Thought For The Day: To make a difference, you have to be positively different and act differently.

Thought For The Day: There is no mystery that cannot be unravelled;
there is no equation without solution.

It is a fact that there is no endless night on the earth. There is also no endless journey; every journey that started must end sometime. Also, there is no endless examination or temptation; every examination must come to an end. Likewise, there is no door without a key, whether it is locked within or without.

There is no mystery that cannot be unravelled; there is no equation without solution. Mathematicians battled with one of the most difficult equations, the Fermat’s last theorem formulated by Pierre de Fermat in 1637, for many centuries, until Andrew Wiles proved the formula after three hundred and fifty years. Now, if a formula could be solved by a man after many centuries, how much more can God, the Obadabada (the Almighty God), the Father of all mathematicians, solve every mystery around your life.

Beloved, it does not matter the equation the devil is confronting your life with, the difficult examination set before you, the doors that have been locked against you or the mystery surrounding your life and destiny, today, I decree that you are coming out, in Jesus’ Name.

Remember This: There is no mystery that cannot be unravelled; there is no equation without solution

Assignment:

1. Trust God to dissolve every mystery around your life.

Prayer: O Lord, I surrender my all to You. I ask that You break every chain and bondage surrounding my life and destiny, Lord in Jesus’ Name.

Topic: Steadfast Love [Our Daily Bread 9 December 2018 Devotional]

Read: Psalm 136:1–9, Bible in a Year: Daniel 11–12; Jude

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. Psalm 136:1

“I love you!” my dad called out as I slammed the car door and headed into school. I was in sixth grade, and for months we had played out basically the same scenario every morning. We arrived at school, Dad said, “Have a great day! I love you!” and all I said was “Bye.” I wasn’t angry with him or ignoring him. I was simply so wrapped up in my own thoughts that I didn’t notice his words. Nevertheless, my dad’s love remained steadfast.

God’s love is like that—and more. It endures forever. The Hebrew word that expresses this steadfast kind of love is hesed. It’s used over and over again in the Old Testament, and twenty-six times in Psalm 136 alone! No modern word can fully capture the meaning; we translate it “kindness,” “loving-kindness,” “mercy,” or “loyalty.” Hesed is a love that is based on covenant commitment; love that is loyal and faithful. Even when God’s people sinned, He was faithful in loving them. Steadfast love is an integral part of the character of God (Exodus 34:6).

When I was a child, I sometimes took my dad’s love for granted. Sometimes now I do the same thing with my heavenly Father’s love. I forget to listen to God and respond. I forget to be grateful. Yet I know that God’s love for me remains steadfast—a reality that provides a sure foundation for all of my life.

Prayer: God, we praise You for Your steadfast love to us! Even when we’re faithless, You’re faithful.

Take time to show the love of God to someone today.

INSIGHT:
Psalm 136 is known in Jewish tradition as the Great Hallel (from hallelujah; a psalm of praise). The writer of this psalm isn’t given, although some commentators suggest it was written by David. This joyful psalm was likely used as a responsive reading or song. The congregation would repeat (or sing) in unison the refrain “His love endures forever” after an individual or a choir of priests and Levites sang each opening sentence. It was likely sung during the dedication of Solomon’s temple (2 Chronicles 7:3, 6). Variations of the refrain are also found in 1 Chronicles 16:34 and 2 Chronicles 5:13; 20:21. This psalm not only served as a reminder to the Israelites but also reminds us today to praise God for His never-ending goodness and His wondrous deeds on our behalf.Alyson Kieda

Topic – Love: The Secret of Success [Kenneth Copeland Devotional 9 December 2018]

Love never fails. – 1 Corinthians 13:8, The Amplified Bible

Fear of failure. It’s haunted all of us at some time in our lives. Popular psychology tells us to adjust to it. But the Word of God tells us that there is a failure-proof way to live without it. It is the way of love.

If you want to know real success, you must learn to be moved and motivated by love. That’s how Jesus was when He was on the earth.

Even when John the Baptist was senselessly, brutally murdered and Jesus went away to be alone, He didn’t deviate from the way of love. For Matthew 14:6-14 says that even then in that emotionally taxing time when the people followed Him and would give Him no solitude, He was moved with compassion and healed their sick.

I used to wonder how Jesus could just turn away from that terrible crime and not retaliate. What I didn’t realize was that He did retaliate. He overcame the works of Satan with compassion. He defeated hatred with love. He attacked Satan in the spirit realm by destroying his works of sickness and disease.

Compassion doesn’t strike at the surface of things. It goes to the root of the problem. That’s why it always succeeds.

“But wait!” you may say. “I can’t operate like that. I’m not Jesus.”

Yes you can, because the Word of God says that His love has been shed abroad in your heart! (Rom. 5:5). And 1 John 2:5 says His love is perfected in you as you keep His Word.

Commit to living the life of love today. Watch God turn failure into success at home, at work…in any situation. Love never fails!

Topic: The Veil Is Torn [Andrew Wommack Devotional 9 December 2018]

Luke 23:45 “And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.”

The veil spoken of here reached from the ceiling to the floor, from wall to wall, and separated the Holy of Holies from the holy place in the temple. Solomon’s temple was 30 cubits high (1 Ki. 6:2), but Herod increased the height to 40 cubits according to the writings of Josephus, a first century historian. Therefore, depending on what standard you use to convert cubits to feet (there is uncertainty as to exactly what a cubit equaled in our feet and inches), this veil was somewhere between 60 feet and 90 feet high.

It is significant that this veil was rent from top to bottom (Mt. 27:51; Mk. 15:38). No man could have torn the veil in this fashion. It was definitely God that rent the veil. The time when this veil was rent corresponds exactly with the moment Jesus died.

Hebrews 9:1-9 tells us that the veil separated the Holy of Holies, where God dwelt, from the rest of the temple, where men dwelt. This signified that man was separated from God by sin (Isa. 59:1-2). Only the high priest was permitted to pass beyond this veil, and only once each year (Ex. 30:10; Heb. 9:7). This symbolized the Christ who would enter into God’s presence for us and make an atonement.

The moment that Christ died, the veil was torn in two, revealing that the sacrifice had been made and that there is no longer any separation between God and man. Jesus tore the veil, that is to say His flesh (Heb. 10:20), in two and opened up a new way unto God through Himself.

On the cover of your Bible and my Bible appear the words “Holy Bible.” Do you know why the Bible is called holy? Why should it be called holy when so much lust and hate and greed and war are found in it? It is because the Bible tells the truth. It tells the truth about God, about man, and about the devil. The Bible teaches that we exchange the truth of God for the devil’s lie about sex, for example; and drugs, and alcohol, and religious hypocrisy. Jesus Christ is the ultimate truth. Furthermore, He told the truth. Jesus said that He was the truth, and the truth would make us free.

Prayer for the day: Almighty God, I thank You for the truth which You have given me through Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
