Open Heaven 29 October 2018 – Look Up

Open Heaven 29 October 2018 Monday Daily Devotional by Pastor E A Adeboye – Look Up

Topic: Look Up (Open Heaven 29 October 2018)

Memorise: “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”- John 15:5

Read: Hebrews 12:1-3 (KJV)

1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

Bible in One Year: Jeremiah 29-30, Luke 12:35-56

Open Heaven 29 October 2018 Monday MESSAGE:

To look to Jesus means to rely on Him for help and to see Him as our example. He is our forerunner who has triumphantly gone through whatever we are passing through now, he knew the purpose of His coming into the world, and He stayed true to that purpose till it was fulfilled. Therefore, in the midst of trials and temptations, you only need to look up to Jesus and walk in the steps that He left for us to follow.

To look to Jesus is to look away from every other thing and focus on him alone. Naturally, when you look up, it becomes impossible to see your surroundings at the same time. For this reason, your focus shifts from your surrounding and settles on the things above alone. So, to look up to Jesus means that no matter how fierce the storm is raging in your present situation, you must look away from it and fix your gaze only on Jesus Christ. The good thing is that it is only then that solutions will come and peace will be given to calm the raging storm. If you don’t believe me, ask Peter. When he had his eyes set on Jesus, he was walking on the stormy sea, but the moment he looked at his surroundings, he began to sink (Matthew 14:28-31). Matthew 14:30 says:

“But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.”

You will not sink in Jesus’ Name.

To look to man is a fruitless effort. A person can only raise you as far as his or her hands can reach, and each person’s reach is limited. Also, someone can be in a position of authority today and be out of it tomorrow and so what happens to you if you have been looking up to that person? In the little time that I have spent on earth, I have come to discover that the only person you can trust totally is God. He is the one who never fails, has no limits and can never be dethroned.

Finally, to look up to Jesus is to focus on our destination and our reward. We are sojourners here on earth, only passing through on our way to our eternal home. If Heaven is your final destination, then it is only wise that you focus on The Way to that destination. The Bible says that He sits at the right hand of God’s throne. That is our finish line, and that is where your gaze should be permanently fixed.

Open Heaven 29 October 2018 Monday Action Point:

Keep your gaze fixed on Jesus, no matter what.

Open Heaven 29 October 2018 Monday Hymn 2: I Need Thee Every Hour

1. I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.

Chorus:
I need Thee, oh, I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Savior,
I come to Thee.

2. I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby;
Temptations lose their pow’r when Thou art nigh.

3. I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide, or life is vain.

4. I need Thee every hour; teach me Thy will;
And Thy rich promises in me fulfill.

5. I need Thee every hour, most Holy One;
Oh, make me Thine indeed, Thou blessed Son.

Seeds of Destiny 29 October 2018 Devotional: The Relationship between Sin and Prayer

Topic: The Relationship between Sin and Prayer [Seeds of Destiny 29 October 2018 Devotional]

Scripture: The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight. Proverbs 15:8

Thought For The Day: Those who pray more sin less and those who pray less sin more.

Prayer is a solemn request for help or an expression of desire and affection to God; Prayer is an act of communicating with God.

It is important to know that prayer cannot be effective until the matter of sin has been dwelt with.

The truth is, prayer and sin are mutually exclusive. They are diametrically opposed. They don’t co-exist. The decision to sin is a decision against prayer and the decision to pray is a decision against sin.

Prayer keeps people from sin and sin keeps people from praying. Those who pray more sin less and those who pray less sin more. One of the major agendas of sin is to launch an attack on the prayer life of a person.

For instance, when a person has smoked cigarette, drunk alcohol, committed immorality, taken money or something he/she was not given, told a lie, etc., the flow of prayer from such person’s mouth would be a struggle, except he/she is a chronic hypocrite. The Presence of God around that life would be lost.

Beloved, the greatest loss in life is not the loss of money, friendship or a job; the greatest loss in life is the loss of the Presence of God and relationship with the Creator. It is an eternal loss! But that shall not be your portion, in Jesus’ Name.

Remember This: Those who pray more sin less and those who pray less sin more.

Assignments:
1. Confess and repent of any sin in your life.
2. Always maintain a healthy relationship with God; do not be too big to ask God for mercy
3. Ensure that your prayer life is alive; never go a day or a week without fasting or praying, it is risky.

Prayer: Lord, I ask for Your mercy in any area I have fallen short of Your glory. Grant me the grace to maintain a buoyant relationship with You. I refuse to live with a fireless prayer life, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Megachurch Sex Assault Like Bill Hybels, Andy Savage Making Forgiveness Hard: Christian Students

(Screenshot: Willow Creek Community Church)Bill Hybels, pastor and founder of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill., announces his resignation at a church family meeting on Tuesday April 10, 2018.

Christian students have admitted that sexual assault stories concerning megachurch leaders are making God’s call for forgiveness challenging.

A small survey from the Christian Pepperdine University in California published on Wednesday found that as many as 71 percent of the 50 respondents said that there are exceptions to God’s call “to forgive those who trespass against us.”

Less than a quarter, or 22 percent, argued that there are no exceptions to the calling in the Lord’s prayer.

The Pepperdine University Graphic said that part of that narrative concerns the #MeToo movement, including the numerous stories of sexual assault allegations concerning megachurch pastors.

One prominent case identified was Highpoint Church Teaching Pastor Andy Savage, who resigned from his position earlier this year following decades-old allegations that he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl, though he claimed the incident was consensual.

The other high-profile case revolved around Bill Hybels, founding pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, who also resigned earlier this year…

The 2 Churches You Should Visit When in Detroit

(Photo by Dennis Lennox)St. John’s Episcopal Church, one of Detroit’s finest churches.

I recently wrote about Detroit’s turnaround and how the Motor City has rapidly transformed itself.

There is so much to experience — great restaurants, an incredible variety of architecture, a world-class art museum — notwithstanding the very real challenges that have created a city of two Detroits.

Among the things to see are numerous old churches, which are reminders of how rich Detroit was from the late 19th century through the 1950s.

In no particular order are the following two churches, which are my favorites in a city full of spires and crosses:

Ecumenical Theological Seminary

Originally built in 1889 for First Presbyterian Church — at the time Michigan’s oldest Protestant congregation — the cruciform-shaped edifice, built of beautiful Lake Superior red sandstone, is Detroit’s finest extant example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture.

The style, briefly fashionable in the late Victorian era but overshadowed by ecclesiastical Gothic Revival, gets its name from prominent architect Henry Hobson Richardson. Richardson and those who imitated his signature style, known for its bold Norman or Romanesque arches, designed both churches and secular buildings.

First Presbyterian Church-turned-Ecumenical Theological Seminary is the work of George D. Mason and Zachariah Rice, better known as the Mason & Rice architectural firm. The duo is credited with countless churches, private residences, train depots and even the iconic Grand Hotel, also known as America’s summer palace, on Mackinac Island.

For me,…

Fans applaud Christian singer Lauren Daigle’s prime-time TV slot

The 27 year old Christian musician sung her track ‘Still Rolling Stones’ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show – a popular talk show hosted by comedian Ellen DeGeneres, who is an outspoken supporter of LGBT rights.

TV talent show accused of silencing ex-gay contestant’s testimony

A pre-audition interview Matthew Grech gave to X Factor Malta last week disappeared from Facebook and YouTube, as critics complained it should never have been aired on television.

The singer also said same-sex marriage was a sin, during an interview which opponents said amounted to advertising gay conversion therapy on a state-funded TV channel – TVM.

The Maltese Equality Minister, Helena Dalli was quoted by the Lovin Malta news website as saying: “That interview should never have been aired in the first place.

“It did untold damage to our efforts to change social attitudes towards minorities, including LGBTQ youths.

“Gay youths don’t need forgiveness or healing, they need understanding.”

A statement released by television show bosses and seen by the Malta Independent website said footage of Grech’s interview was not intended to cause offence, nor did it reflect the opinions of show producers.

But, a writer in Britain associated with the campaign and advocacy group Christian Concern said there was danger the experiences of people like Grech will be “censored” by “LGBT voices”.

Carys Moseley said: “According to the Maltese press, LGBT activists and their allies managed to get the video clip of the interview taken off Facebook and YouTube within minutes.

“They also slammed the judges of X Factor Malta for not criticising Matthew Grech’s comments about homosexuality…

Americans Spend More Money on Pet Halloween Costumes Than Reaching Lost: Missions Expert

(PHOTO: SCREENGRAB/FACEBOOK)Andrew Scott, president of OM USA, speaks at the “Rethink Church/Rethink Mission” event at McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Va., on Oct. 12.

In recent years, Americans have spent more money buying Halloween costumes for their pets than the amount given to reach the unreached, Andrew Scott, president of Operation Mobilization U.S. has revealed.

As part of the Rethink Church | Rethink Mission Conference held at McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia, Scott, author of the book Scatter, pointed out that the average Christian household gives about 2 percent of their income to Christian causes. Of that 2 percent, only 5 percent leaves the country, and only 1 percent of that goes to changing the reality of those that have little or no access to the Gospel.

“We spend more money every year on Halloween costumes for our pets than we do on reaching the least of these,” he said. “We have to take a step back and say, ‘What is happening in our world today, and what should we do as a result?’ We need to rethink our models and we need to rethink our message.”

Scott, who has served in the mission field for over 20 years, said that while God is undeniably doing “amazing things all around the world,” there are still 2.8 billion unreached people today. In fact,…
