Topic: Unexpected Kindness [Our Daily Bread 27 October 2018 Devotional]

Read: Ephesians 2:1–10, Bible in a Year: Jeremiah 12–14; 2 Timothy 1

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. Ephesians 2:10

My friend was waiting to pay for her groceries when the man in front of her turned around and handed her a voucher for £10 ($14) off her bill. Short on sleep, she burst into tears because of his kind act; then she started laughing at herself for crying. This unexpected kindness touched her heart and gave her hope during a period of exhaustion. She gave thanks to the Lord for His goodness extended to her through another person.

The theme of giving was one the apostle Paul wrote about in his letter to gentile Christians in Ephesus. He called them to leave their old lives behind and embrace the new, saying that they were saved by grace. Out of this saving grace, he explained, flows our desire to “do good works,” for we have been created in God’s image and are His “handiwork” (2:10). We, like the man at the supermarket, can spread God’s love through our everyday actions.

Of course, we don’t have to give material things to share God’s grace; we can show His love through many other actions. We can take the time to listen to someone when they speak to us. We can ask someone who is serving us how they are. We can stop to help someone in need. As we give to others, we’ll receive joy in return (Acts 20:35).

Prayer: Dear Father, You created us in Your image, and we rejoice that we can share Your love and life. Help us to see the opportunities to give to others today.

We’ve been created to share God’s love through giving His gifts.

INSIGHT
For believers, the foundation for loving others is because we’ve been loved by God. But loving others like Christ loved us doesn’t come naturally to many of us. In fact, aren’t we sometimes much harder on others than we are on ourselves? Knowing all of us share a common fallen human nature, however, can help us be more patient.

On our own, we’d all naturally live out the empty “ways of this world”—the kind of selfish, ugly lives that deserve God’s condemnation (Ephesians 2:2–3). This means none of us can take credit for any good in our lives (vv. 8–9). And it means that whomever we encounter, we can offer not only God’s truth but His love and grace.

Topic: Don’t Depend on Guesswork [Kenneth Copeland Devotional 27 October 2018]

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. – Jeremiah 33:3

Who do you turn to when you need help, when you need an important answer to an important question? Do you ask God first?

So many believers fail to do that! They’ll stand around wringing their hands and talking to each other all day. They’ll inquire of their pastor. They’ll inquire of their friends. They’ll inquire of their husband or wife. But do they inquire of God? No.

Don’t make that mistake.

Instead, follow the example of King David. In 1 Chronicles 14, the Bible tells us he was about to face a battle with the very powerful Philistines who had all come out against him. The Philistine nation had been an enemy of Israel for years. David probably could have guessed that God would tell him to go to battle against them. But he didn’t guess! He went to God and inquired, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand” (verse 10).

Don’t depend on guesswork. When you encounter a problem, seek the Lord through the Word and in prayer and ask Him what the solution is. No matter how much scripture you learn, no matter how fully you perceive who you are in Christ Jesus, you’ll never outgrow your need to do that.

Go to the Lord and find out exactly what He wants you to do. Don’t decide your course of action and then ask God to bless your plans. Go to Him and say, “Lord, what are Your plans?” His plans are already blessed. If you follow them, your victory is guaranteed.

The Greek word translated “expedient” means “to be an advantage; profitable.”

How could any situation be more advantageous or profitable than having Jesus physically with you?

When Jesus walked on this earth in His physical body, He was subject to many physical limitations. For instance, He could not always be with every one of His disciples all the time. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, He could. Instead of Satan getting rid of Jesus, 120 “little Christs” (that is literally what the word “Christian” means) came out of the upper room on the day of Pentecost.

Jesus taught His disciples as no teacher ever had, yet they had very little understanding because they were not born again. However, when the Holy Spirit came, He lead them into all truth and even showed them things to come.

The list of advantages of having the Holy Spirit in us as compared to having Jesus with us in His physical body, goes on and on. The advantages can all be summed up in that Jesus’ power is now complete (Mt. 28:18) and no longer confined to one physical body.

There is no such thing as victorious Christian living without a moment by moment, hour by hour, day by day dependence upon the Spirit of God. Not only is the Christian life hard to live but it is impossible to live without the power of God Himself.

There is an old story that tells about a pig. . . . The farmer brought the pig into the house. He gave him a bath, polished his hooves, put some Chanel No. 5 on him, put a ribbon around his neck, and put him in the living room. The pig looked fine. He made a nice and companionable pet for a few minutes. But as soon as the door was opened, the pig left the living room and jumped into the first mud puddle that he could find. Why? Because he was still a pig at heart. His nature had not been changed. He had changed outwardly but not inwardly. . . .

You can take a man—dress him up, put him in the front row in church, and he almost looks like a saint. He may fool even his best friends for a while, but then put him in his office, or in the club on Saturday night, and you will see his true nature come out again. Why does he act that way? Because his nature has not been changed. He has not been born again.

Prayer for the day: Almighty God, there are times when I debase my Christian walk and slip again into the mire. Cleanse and strengthen me, for Jesus’ sake.

Topic: Your Spirituality And Your Mentality [Seeds of Destiny 27 October 2018 Devotional]

Scripture: The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. Psalms 14:1

Thought For The Day: Nearness to God is nearness to sense; nobody can be sensible who is distant from God.

There is a relationship between spirituality and mentality. That is why it is a delusion of grandeur, decadence of mentality and foolishness at its peak to think that God does not exist (Psalms 14:1). As a matter of fact, spirituality sharpens mentality. The closer you get to God, the more like Him you think. Nearness to God is nearness to sense. Nobody can be sensible who is distant from God; disconnection from God is impartation of stupidity.

The Scripture says in Ecclesiastes 8:1 that a man’s wisdom maketh his face to shine (paraphrased). And the fear of the Lord which is spirituality is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). So, the equation is, spirituality provokes wisdom and wisdom provokes stardom. Wisdom makes stars; wise people are star people. Authority belongs to those with high spirituality and solidity of mentality.

Today, the reason why some governments fail and the people suffer is the manifestation of low spirituality and the display of the shortage of mentality. Nothing works out when the mind is not at work.

Beloved, make up your mind to go deeper with God; the deeper you get to God, the more sense you acquire and the more outstanding your life becomes.

Remember This: Nearness to God is nearness to sense; nobody can be sensible who is distant from God.

Assignments:

1. Increase your wisdom capacity by increasing your spirituality.
2. Ask God for Wisdom (James 1:5).

Prayer: Lord, I connect the grace to maintain a solid spiritual stand with you. Deliver me from the plague of lack of mentality and the display of foolishness Lord, in Jesus’ Name.
