Girl Pulls 1,500-Year-Old Sword From Lake in Sweden – Urban Christian News

An 8-year-old girl made a fantastic discovery playing in a Swedish lake: a pre-Viking era sword.

Saga Vanecek, a Swedish-American girl, pulled the 33-inch sword from the bottom of the lake, held it up in the air and declared “Daddy, I found a sword!” she told Swedish news website The Local. A drought had lowered the lake’s water level near her family’s vacation home in southern Sweden, the BBC reports.

That sword, made out of wood, leather and metal, could have been made 1,500 years ago, experts at the Jonkopings Lans Museum said in a press release.

Vanecek found the ancient relic on July 15 but just recently went public with the news.

Open Heaven 6 October 2018 – He is Right Beside You

Open Heaven 6 October 2018 Saturday Daily Devotional by Pastor E A Adeboye – He is Right Beside You

Topic: He is Right Beside You (Open Heaven 6 October 2018)

Memorise: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”- Isaiah 41:10

Read: Isaiah 43:1-5 (KJV)

1 But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.

2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

3 For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

4 Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.

5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;

Bible in One Year: Isaiah 38-40, Luke 2:2-40

Open Heaven 6 October 2018 Saturday MESSAGE:

As mortals, it is natural to look around us for solutions whenever problems arise. Only a few people look to God first during such trying times. When trials and difficulties come our way, we mostly look to our family members or friends for solutions. Imagine how bad God feels whenever you have a problem and He doesn’t even come to your mind first. Because God gave us freewill, He cannot force us to request or accept help from Him. No matter how big, small or strange our problems may be, God has the solution to all of them. When a little child falls and bruises his or her knee, in most cases, the first person that child runs to is the mother. The fact that the child thinks of his or her mother first shows the bond that exit between them. As His children, God expects us to run to Him with whatever problem we have, no matter how small or trivial it may seem. The bond of love that exists between us and Him is what should drive us to think of Him first whenever a problem arises. When we don’t think of Him first at such times, we are saying to Him that this bond of love is not there.

Many times, we undo ourselves by trying to solve our own problems. We don’t even realize the immense abilities our Father has and His undying love for us. If we knew, we won’t be wasting our time and energy looking elsewhere for help. When I was a child, on one eventful day, my father was sitting outside and enjoying the cool breeze while I played football. After playing for a little while, I kicked the ball and it got stuck on the roof of the house. Because I was small, I had to move back some distance from the house in order to see the ball. Whenever I tried to get the ball down with a stick, I failed because I couldn’t see the ball when I got close to the house. I went back and forth like this until I got tired. All the while, my father just sat there as if he didn’t know what was going on. Tired and exhausted, I turned to him for help. His response was surprising. He said he was wondering if I didn’t see him there all the time while I was struggling. He stood up and hit the ball off the roof in one swipe of his hands. God is right beside you, watching as you struggle with your issues. If you don’t call Him to help, it means you don’t need Him. Be wise and hand over your problems to the Lord who made heaven and earth.

However, note that you cannot ask someone to help you if you don’t have a relationship with that fellow, and the probability that he or she will help you depends on how cordial your relationship is. When you have a good relationship with God, the moment you cry out to Him for anything, He will come running to you, and He will answer you according to His perfect will.

Open Heaven 6 October 2018 Saturday Hymn 11: O God Our Help In Ages Past

1. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

2. Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

4. A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the op’ning day.

6. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home.

Voters in 3 States to Consider Pro-Life, Anti-Roe Measures

Voters in 3 States to Consider Pro-Life, Anti-Roe Measures

Abortion may be legal nationwide, but voters in three states – Alabama, West Virginia and Oregon — will decide in November whether to curtail the right to end an unborn baby’s life.

Alabama citizens will vote on Amendment 2, which would change the state constitution to “recognize and support the sanctity of unborn life and the rights of unborn children, including the right to life.” The goal is to ensure abortion cannot be legalized in Alabama if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

“We want to make sure that at a state level, if Roe v. Wade is overturned, that the Alabama Constitution cannot be used as a mechanism by which to claim that there is a right to abortion,” Alabama Republican state Rep. Matt Fridy said earlier this year.

In West Virginia, voters will consider Amendment 1, which has a similar goal and would add language to the state constitution stating that “nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of abortion.” The amendment, if passed, also would overturn a state Supreme Court ruling that allowed state funding of abortion.

Finally, Oregon citizens will vote on Measure 106, which would amend the state constitution so that public money cannot be used for abortions.

Pro-lifers in Oregon are making sure voters in the left-leaning state understand the measure’s intent.

Brett Kavanaugh Writes Op-Ed in Wall Street Journal, says “I Am a Pro-Law Judge”

Brett Kavanaugh Writes Op-Ed in Wall Street Journal, says “I Am a Pro-Law Judge”

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed written by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

In the op-ed, Kavanaugh apologizes for some of his responses during last Thursday’s hearing which was set up to look into sexual assault accusations made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford against the judge. Kavanaugh wrote, “I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been. I might have been too emotional at times. I know that my tone was sharp, and I said a few things I should not have said.”

The judge then goes on to urge people to remember that he is human, and that he was there not only to defend himself, but also to defend his family. He wrote, “I hope everyone can understand that I was there as a son, husband and dad. I testified with five people foremost in my mind: my mom, my dad, my wife, and most of all my daughters.”

Kavanaugh also reiterated that he is an impartial, independent judge and plans to maintain that status. Judges he said, “make decisions because the law and the Constitution compel the result.”

“Over the past 12 years, I have ruled sometimes for the prosecution and sometimes for criminal defendants, sometimes for workers and sometimes for businesses, sometimes for environmentalists and sometimes for coal miners,” he continued.

“In each case, I have followed the law. I do not decide cases based…

World Evangelical Alliance leader says evangelicalism must be ‘reclaimed’ from political ties

Bishop Efraim Tendero said it was “unfortunate” the word has become politicised and now draws strong connotations to the Republican Party in the United States.

Visiting the UK from his native Philippines, Bishop Efraim said during an interview with Premier’s Alex Williams: “Definitely, we need to claim [the word] evangelical in that context.

“It is not a political agenda or a political organisation; it’s actually a ministry of people who are committed to the Lord Jesus.”

It has been widely acknowledged that Donald Trump became US President in 2016 thanks, in part, to the sizable support he received from white evangelical Christians in the US.

Polls have indicated Donald Trump has consistently been rated more favourably by people identifying that way than the wider US population.

Bishop Efraim, who leads a 600 million-strong global membership, said it was important Republican politics does not become perceived as synonymous with evangelical Christianity.

The heart of evangelical Christianity is “the Good News”, he said.

Bishop Efraim continued: “That’s unfortunate that, in the United States in particular, the word ‘evangelical’ and the evangelical movement is [sic] identified more as for political advocacy rather than the demonstration or proclamation of the Gospel.”

Urging people not to stop using the term “evangelical”,…

Sudan Releases Bible Shipments Detained in Port Years Ago

Sudan Releases Bible Shipments Detained in Port Years Ago

JUBASouth Sudan (Morning Star News) – In a surprise move, Sudan has released shipments of Bibles long held in port, including one detained nearly six years ago, according to the head of the Bible Society in Sudan.

The Rev. Ismail Abdurahman Kenani, Khartoum-based director of the Bible Society in Sudan, said port authorities had been delaying several shipments of Bibles in Port Sudan, on the Red Sea. Besides the shipment detained after Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir began a crack-down on Christian institutions in 2012, another one detained a little over three years ago was among those released in early August, Kenani said.

The estimated 2 million Christians in Sudan have endured a critical shortage of Arabic-language Bibles, he said.

“We are even planning to put an order for another shipment, because the need is still great here for the Bibles,” Kenani told Morning Star News.

Port authorities have long given no official explanation for detaining the shipments, though one official told the Bible Society they were held up because they exceeded the limit of one container at a time. Intentional bureaucratic barriers also seem to have been erected.

“We came to learn that proper documents for the shipments were intentionally misplaced by one of the officers of the port authority,” Kenani said.

The church leader told Morning Star News that…

Christian debt charity worth £32 million to UK economy

The university discovered that for every pound the Christian debt charity spent, it benefitted the wider society four times as much.

The LSE also said CAP provides ‘crucial’ face-to-face support and goes far beyond simple debt advice.

Christians Against Poverty was founded by John Kirkby in Bradford in 1996.

He believed God was calling him to sacrifice his career in finance and use his knowledge of the industry to help the poor.

His faith adventure led him to people crippled by debt such as parents who couldn’t feed their children or families facing eviction.

He used his expertise to negotiate with creditors, set up budgeting systems and offer a lifeline to those trapped in debt.

Now, CAP has grown to 645 projects with churches across the UK including job clubs and training in life skills as well as debt advice.

CAP features in an hour-long documentary entitled “The Debt Saviours” on BBC2 this (Friday) evening at 9pm.

As Senate Nears Kavanaugh Confirmation Vote, Faith Voices Speak Out

WASHINGTON (RNS) — As senators remain embroiled in a contentious battle over Brett Kavanaugh’s potential elevation to the U.S. Supreme Court, faith groups are increasingly voicing both passionate opposition to and support for the nominee.

On Wednesday (Oct. 3), the National Council of Churches — which boasts 38 member denominations with 40 million members — unveiled a sternly worded statement demanding Kavanaugh withdraw from consideration. The group argued the federal judge “exhibited extreme partisan bias and disrespect towards certain members” of the Senate Judiciary Committee during his testimony last week. As a result, the NCC said, Kavanaugh “demonstrated that he possesses neither the temperament nor the character essential for a member of the highest court in our nation.”

The statement also claimed Kavanaugh made “several misstatements and some outright falsehoods” during his remarks. An NCC representative later told Religion News Service that the group is concerned about the allegations against Kavanaugh: “We are deeply disturbed by the multiple allegations of sexual assault and call for a full and unhindered investigation of these accusations.”

The NCC letter sparked a surge of traffic that crashed the organization’s website and was quickly followed by news of another letter opposing Kavanaugh, this time from a group of Catholic nuns — the Benedictine Sisters of Baltimore.

“We urge you, plead with you to vote NO on the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh,” the letter read. Authors railed against the additional FBI…

Thieves take entire lead roof from Bedfordshire church

Around 20 tonnes of metal was taken from the 14th century All Saints Church in Houghton Conquest, Bedfordshire.

The theft was discovered on Tuesday when one of the cleaners noticed daylight coming through the roof.

Gary Mudd, chairman of the church council, posted photographs online showing the damage done to the Grade I listed building.

It is feared that the cost of replacing the lead could be as high as £100,000.

His wife Helen Mudd, also a church member, said: “It’s just sheer greed isn’t it?

“The cost of the repair is going to be absolutely astronomic.

“It’s a Grade I listed building so we have to use like-for-like materials and whatever we repair it with, it’s not going to be cheap.

“Fundraising just can’t keep up with the demands of a building like that.

“It’s an historical building and it’s wanted and loved by the community, whether they’re religious or not.

“A small community like this isn’t going to be able to raise the funds in five minutes.”

Police said the thieves may have posed as workmen and carried out the theft over a “prolonged period of time”.

Inspector Nick Masters described the theft as “audacious” and asked any residents with CCTV to check their footage.

“We suspect the people responsible may have been going backwards and forwards to the church for a prolonged period of time,” he added.

“Due to the sheer quantity of lead taken, it’s unlikely that it…
