Humanitarian Ship’s Under Investigation After Bringing 234 Migrants to Malta – Urban Christian News

The captain of a German humanitarian ship that spent nearly a week searching for safe harbor before being allowed to bring 234 migrants rescued at sea to Malta on Wednesday declared during the odyssey: “Saving people is not a crime.” Still, once he was on land he was placed under investigation for allegedly breaching maritime regulations.

It is part of a growing trend in Europe and the United States: Private groups responding to images of human suffering and deaths targeted by authorities who are often under political and popular pressure to stem the migration tides.

In announcing that Captain Claus-Peter Reisch would face investigation, Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat placed the blame for the impasse that kept the migrants at sea while European nations haggled over their fate squarely on the captain, who he said went “against international rules and ignored directions.” French President Emmanuel Macron also criticized the captain, saying he “acted against all the rules,” by not turning the migrants over to Libyan authorities after they were found floating in rubber dinghies in Libyan waters.

Humanitarian groups have pushed back. Doctors without Borders, Amnesty International and two other NGOs asked to meet with Macron over his assertion. “Engineered panic and fear-mongering by European politicians over migrations is steering the EU toward very dangerous waters,” Human Rights Watch said in a statement.

Italy’s new, hard-line interior minister, Matteo Salvini, has been instrumental in raising the level of confrontation, closing Italian ports to humanitarian…

Leaders from over 600 Churches Sign Petition against New Tax Law

Leaders from over 600 Churches Sign Petition against New Tax Law

A new tax on churches, synagogues, and other non-profit groups could force those places to pay up to a 21 percent tax.

According to Politico.com, the new tax code would mean churches, hospitals and other groups would have to file returns and pay taxes on some of the benefits they provide for their employees.

Many groups had not even heard of the new tax change, including some lawmakers.

“A lot of people are just finding out about it and the more people find out about it, the more pressure there will be on Treasury and Congress to either delay implementation or consider changing this,” said Steven Woolf, senior tax policy counsel for a group that would be impacted by the tax.

More than 600 churches and other groups have started a petition demanding that the new tax be repealed.

“There’s going to be huge headaches,” said Galen Carey, vice president of government relations at the National Association of Evangelicals, a group of evangelical Christian organizations. “The cost of compliance, especially for churches that have small staffs or maybe volunteer accountants and bookkeepers — we don’t need this kind of hassle.”

House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady, however, is defending the change, saying it would simplify the tax code.

Under the new tax code, Republicans cut tax breaks for fringe benefits for employees. Those include practices such as…

Slaughter of More than 200 People in Plateau State, Nigeria Shocks Christians

Slaughter of More than 200 People in Plateau State, Nigeria Shocks Christians

Muslim Fulani herdsmen with machetes and firearms slaughtered more than 200 people in 10 predominantly Christian communities near Jos, Nigeria on Saturday and Sunday (June 23-24) in what a cattlemen’s spokesman admitted was likely retaliation for stealing cows.

Police in Jos said only 86 people had been killed in the predominantly Christian areas, but area residents and morgue sources informed Morning Star News of many more corpses. Dogo Nvou of Nghar, Gashish District in the Barkin Ladi area, said Fulanis killed more than 70 people in his village alone.

“My uncle, his wife and many relations [were] killed,” he said in a text message. “Over 70 people in my village have been killed. It is only the Lord that can comfort us all.”

The weekend (June 23-24) attacks took place in the predominantly Christian villages of Xland, Gindin Akwati, Ruku, Nghar, Kura Falls, Kakuruk, Rakok, Kok, and Razat, sources said. The villages are in the two districts of Gashish and Ropp in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area (LGA).

“In Nghar village alone, about 70 corpses of Christians were recovered and the entire village has been burnt down by the Fulani herdsmen,” area resident Thomas Chuwang, 45, told Morning Star News by phone on Monday (June 25), adding that the victims there were members of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN).

Our Daily Bread Devotional 28 June 2018 – Ring in a Dumpster

Topic: Ring in a Dumpster [Our Daily Bread 28 Thursday June, 2018]

Read: Matthew 13:44–46, Bible in a Year: Job 11–13; Acts 9:1–21

Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7

In college, I woke up one morning to find Carol, my roommate, in a panic. Her signet ring was missing. We searched everywhere. The next morning we found ourselves picking through a dumpster.

I ripped open a trash bag. “You’re so dedicated to finding this!”

“I’m not losing a two-hundred-dollar ring!” she exclaimed.

Carol’s determination reminds me of the parable Jesus told about the kingdom of heaven, which “is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (Matthew 13:44). Certain things are worth going great lengths to find.

Throughout the Bible, God promises that those who seek Him will find Him. In Deuteronomy, He explained to the Israelites that they would find Him when they turned from their sin and sought Him with all their hearts (4:28–29). In the book of 2 Chronicles, King Asa gained encouragement from a similar promise (15:2). And in Jeremiah, God gave the same promise to the exiles, saying He would bring them back from captivity (29:13–14).

If we seek God, through His Word, worship, and in our daily lives, we will find Him. Over time, we’ll know Him on a deeper level. That will be even better than the sweet moment when Carol pulled her ring out of that trash bag!

Prayer: Lord, help me to seek You with all my heart.

To find God, we must be willing to seek Him.

Kenneth & Gloria Copeland Devotional 28 June 2018 – Vive la Différence

Topic: Vive la Différence [Kenneth & Gloria Copeland, Thursday June 28, 2018]

If one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. – Ecclesiastes 4:12

There’s power in unity. The devil knows that. That’s why he’s continually fighting it. He takes the differences between us, differences God put there to make us stronger, and tries to use them as a wedge to drive us apart.

Take men and women, for example. He’s deceived us into fighting about which one is superior to the other. But I can settle that argument right now. Women are superior to men. If you don’t believe that, you boys try having a baby. But then, men are superior to women. If you don’t believe that, you women try having one without us.

It’s the differences combined that make us strong!

People have even argued about whether God is male or female. But the Bible itself tells us that. He’s both! That’s right. In the Hebrew language, all words have gender. They’re either male or female. But the Hebrew word Jehovah is both masculine and feminine. He’s as much female as He is male and as much male as He is female.

Originally, mankind was that way too. When God first made “man,” he was as much female as he was male. Then God separated the female part out and made “wo-man” or, “the man with the womb.” After that, man and woman had to come together to be perfectly whole.

That’s still true today. For example, when He puts together husband and wife teams, He often puts people together who have major personality differences. Where one is weak, the other is strong, and vice versa. So, when they become one, they’re more powerful than they ever were apart.

There was a time when I didn’t understand that. I got aggravated with God for calling me a wife who didn’t care for so many things that I liked. But I finally realized God knew what He was doing. If He’d given me a woman who was as nuts about flying as I am, we would have spent the rest of our lives in the clouds. We wouldn’t be preaching the Word. We’d be in some silly air show flying upside down. “The Copeland Team!” or something.

Do you have people in your life who are irritatingly different from you? Don’t let the devil use those differences to drive you apart. Thank God for them! Let Him teach you how to appreciate them. Let Him show you just how powerful you can be…together!

Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy Retires–Could Roe Be Overturned?

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy Retires–Could Roe Be Overturned?

Supreme Court Justice and swing vote Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement Wednesday, giving President Trump the chance to fill a second seat on the court in what could be the most closely watched confirmation battle in decades.

Nominated by President Reagan and confirmed in 1988, Kennedy was the pivotal vote in many landmark 5-4 cases, including ones involving abortion and same-sex marriage.

In 1992, he sided with a 5-4 majority to uphold Roe v. Wade and keep abortion legal nationwide. Then, 15 years later, he cast the deciding vote in a 5-4 decision that uphold a ban on partial-birth abortion.

He had a major impact advancing LGBT issues, too. He sided with major gay rights cases in 1996 (Romer v. Evans) and 2003 (Lawrence v. Texas), writing the majority opinions in both 6-3 rulings. Then, in the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges case, he penned the majority opinion in a 5-4 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.

He sided with conservatives on major cases, too. He voted with the 5-4 majority in Bush v. Gore and then with the majority in District of Columbia v. Heller – a major gun rights case. In recent days he sided with religious liberty groups – first with a Christian baker against the state of Colorado and then with crisis pregnancy centers in cases against the state of California.

But the subject of abortion likely will dominate the debate…

Pastor Miles McPherson Shares Sports Metaphor Christians Can Learn From to Defeat Enemy

(Screenshot: YouTube)Miles McPherson to host a “Race For Unity” simulcast in conjunction with the release of his new book, “The Third Option: Hope for a Racially Divided Nation, Sept 2018.

Former NFL player and founder of a California megachurch, Miles McPherson is gearing up to host a “Race for Unity” simulcast in conjunction with the release of his new book, The Third Option: Hope for a Racially Divided Nation. The minister shared a sports metaphor which he says could really help the church of all races come together to defeat the enemy.

“Racial division has been a part of my life my whole life whether it be with my family or the neighborhoods I lived in,” McPherson told The Christian Post in a recent interview.

The pastor is taking his experiences and directly responding to recent racially-charged conflicts in the country.

The Rock Church senior pastor comes from a very diverse family and has always dealt with merging cultures. He has a white grandmother and a half black and Chinese grandmother.

“All of my life I was loved and raised by people from different ethnicities,” he shared. “Playing football, I was coached by people from different ethnicities and out on the field we gave our all. So all my life, I had extreme interactions with people from different…

Poll: Americans Trust NPR and PBS, but Don’t Trust Fox and MSNBC

Poll: Americans Trust NPR and PBS, but Don’t Trust Fox and MSNBC

Americans say NPR, the Associated Press, PBS and The Wall Street Journal are the most accurate and unbiased news sources while MSNBC and Fox News are among the least accurate and most biased, according to a new survey and report by Gallup and the Knight Foundation.

Not surprisingly, there is a major divide between Democrats and Republicans on the issue.

“Americans perceive much bias and inaccuracy in news reporting and are generally bothered by its presence, even when the bias or inaccuracy is against groups they oppose,” said the report’s conclusion. “They generally believe there is more bias than inaccuracy in news reporting today, both in traditional news media and on social media.”

American adults rated five news organizations as mostly accurate and unbiased: AP, PBS, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and CBS. Meanwhile, six news organizations were rated as mostly inaccurate and biased: MSNBC, Fox, Vox, The Huffington Post, Breitbart News and Mother Jones. According to the report, CNN is “perceived as biased, but the public is divided on whether it is accurate or inaccurate.”

But Republicans and Democrats view new media very differently. Republicans consider only two news organizations – Fox and The Wall Street Journal – accurate and unbiased. For Democrats, the list includes 12 media outlets, including all the major networks – minus Fox, which…

Open Heavens 28 June 2018 Thursday Daily Devotional by Pastor Adeboye — Even The Meek Can Be Offended!

Topic: Even The Meek Can Be Offended! [Open Heavens 28th June 2018, Thursday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. – Ephesians 4:30

Read: Numbers 20:1-12 (KJV)

Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

2 And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

3 And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!

4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?

5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.

7 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.

10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

Bible in One Year: 1 Chronicle 13-15, Acts 18:24-19:20

MESSAGE:

One reality of life that many people, particularly children of God, find difficult to believe is that a meek person can be offended. People who are meek are assumed to always be calm and saint-like, and hence people around them tend to take them for granted and abuse them in many ways. We all know that meekness is a constituent of the fruit of the Spirit, but our memory verse clearly show that the Holy Spirit can also be offended.

Although Numbers 12:3 describes Moses as the meekest among all men on the face of the earth, in today’s Bible reading, this same man got upset that instead of speaking to the rock as God commanded, he struck it with the rod twice, to the Lord’s displeasure. The consequence of this outburst of anger and frustration by Moses was grievous: the Lord rebuked him and denied him entrance into the Promise Land, after forty years of laboring hard to lead all the Israelites from Egypt.

The key lesson we need to learn from Moses’ experience is that our brethren or leaders are all still living in human bodies, and so we need to be sensitive to their humanity and not overstretch them because we believe that as meek people, they will not break. Another lesson is that the meek should not allow themselves to be solely people-driven; they should instead focus on following the instructions given by God.

While we live in this human body, we will always experience offence of provocations from different sources. However, we need to exercise self-control, which is another constituent of the fruit of the Spirit, in all situations. The Bible is clear that only the foolish burst out in anger; you must refuse to be foolish. Proverbs 14:17a says,

“He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly”

Beloved, what are you known for? Are you the kind of person that engages in confrontation with everyone, or are you known to be an example of someone who manifests the fruit of the Spirit?

Prayer Point: Spirit of the Living God, please manifest more of your self-control in my life everyday in Jesus’ Name.

Hymn 15: Nearer My God To Thee

1. Nearer, my God to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be.
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer to Thee!

2. Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down.
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer to Thee!

3. There let the way appear
Steps unto heaven;
All that Thou send’st to me
In mercy given:
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee!
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer to Thee!

4. Then, with my waking thoughts
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I’ll raise
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee!
Nearer, my God to Thee!
Nearer to Thee!
