Almost as soon as the ferryboat started to move, my little daughter said she felt ill. Seasickness had already begun to affect her. Soon I was feeling queasy myself. “Just stare at the horizon,” I reminded myself. Sailors say this helps to regain a sense of perspective.

The Maker of the horizon (Job 26:10) knows that sometimes in life we may become fearful and restless. We can regain perspective by focusing on the distant but steady point of our destiny.

The writer of Hebrews understood this. He sensed discouragement in his readers. Persecution had driven many of them from their homes. So he reminded them that other people of faith had endured extreme trials and had been left homeless. They endured it all because they anticipated something better.

As exiles, these readers could look forward to the city whose architect is God, the heavenly country, the city God prepared for them (Hebrews 11:10, 14, 16). So in his final exhortations, the writer asked his readers to focus on God’s promises. “For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come” (13:14).

Our present troubles are temporary. We are “foreigners and strangers on earth” (11:13), but gazing at the horizon of God’s promises provides the point of reference we need.

Prayer: Father, in the midst of troubles, help me to focus on Your promises.

Focus on God and regain perspective.

Topic: Faithfulness A Key To National Transformation [Seeds of Destiny Tuesday May 29, 2018]

Scripture: A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent. Proverbs 28:20

Thought For The Day: Faithfulness means being consistent in character.

Today is democracy day in our nation, Nigeria! It is a very important day in the history of our great nation. We thank God for His mercy on Nigeria. It is important to know that Nigeria is in the Heart of God; this is why He had blessed this nation in many ways.

Now, according to our anchor Scripture, one key to accessing the blessing of God as a person and a nation is faithfulness; the blessing of God is key to the transformation of life. Jacob was transformed by the vehicle of the blessing (Genesis 32:24-31).

Therefore, it is important to understand what it means to be faithful:

1. Faithfulness means undivided loyalty and submission
When a person is faithful to God, spouse or nation, he has undivided loyalty and submission to them. Being truly faithful, loyal and honest to Nigeria and Nigerians as we always proclaim in the national pledge is key to greater heights in national development.

2. Faithfulness means absolute commitment
Faithfulness to developing our country means being committed to ensuring that the core values of life that would wipe away corruption are strictly practiced.

3. Faithfulness means consistency of character
Faithfulness is the refusal to allow evil, corruption or dubious practice to be perpetuated in your place of work, either as a leader or as a subordinate. Faithfulness means being consistent in positive character.

Beloved, if we embrace and practice the points outlined above as a person or as a nation, we shall see God’s abundant blessings on our lives that would lead to national transformation.

Remember this: Faithfulness means being consistent in character.

Assignments:
1. Decide to be loyal; be committed and diligent at your place of work.
2. Never practice or participate in corruption or any evil that will tarnish your image and that of your nation.
3. Be consistent in character and live up to the expectation of the people around you.

Prayer: O Lord, I ask that You help me to be faithful to You, people and my nation. I receive the grace to be consistent in character and to be committed to nation building, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Topic: Stand In The Gap [DCLM Daily Manna Tuesday May 29, 2018]

Text: Jeremiah 10:17-25 (KJV)

Key Verse: “O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jeremiah 10:23).

MESSAGE:

Jeremiah seems to go into a dialogue with a personification of Jerusalem. In the dialogue, the inhabitants of the city were commanded to take up their baggage for they were going on a journey into exile. The expression – “sling out the inhabitants”– indicates that God threw the inhabitants of Jerusalem like stones from a sling into distant lands. The city responded with dismay; mourning her loss and calamity. She complained about her leaders who did not think it wise to gather the flock.

In the given Bible passage, Jeremiah talks about the sudden destruction that was coming upon Jerusalem for the consistent iniquities of the people. The calamity was to make “the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons”. A serious commotion was heard from the north, indicating that the armies that would mete out God’s judgment were on their way to the city. In view of the calamity that was coming upon the people and Jerusalem. Jeremiah was humbled to pray.

Although he saw the evil which had been determined against the city, he did not resign himself to fate. He went into prayer, asking God for mercy. He pleaded on behalf of the people. He respectfully asked God to correct him, but not in His (God’s) anger or with judgment.

As believers, we are under obligation to stand in the gap for sinners around us and for our dear country. By every standard, the society has gone away from the way of God and His principles. Yet, we must go beyond lamenting the pitiable condition of the country; we must ask God to intervene and have mercy. The antidote to the prevailing spiritual decay and death around us is not in reclining into passivity and self-righteousness but in strident cries to the Most High for His mercy and forgiveness. Knowledge comes with responsibility. Act now!

Thought For The Day: It is unwise to sulk in the face of challenges when we ought to earnestly pray.

1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.

MESSAGE:

It is important for a child of God to recognize and understand the multifaceted life we are called to by God. For this reason, the Holy Spirit reveals to us in 2 Timothy 2:3 that we have been called to be soldiers of Jesus Christ. A soldier does certain things to fulfill his or her vocation. Enduring hardness, shunning worldly pleasures and distractions, and keeping to the rules of military service are some of the basic characteristics expected of a soldier. Soldiers are also required to fight to defend the territorial integrity of their country from external attacks. In addition, they are to engage in warfare to expand the territory of their commander-in-chief, monarch or emperor. As it is in the physical, so it is in the spiritual. The comportment of a soldier is that of discipline, and a Christian soldier should be even more disciplined. This will help him or her to endure hardness, which means learning to be full and also empty as the situation demands (Philippians 4:12). If a soldier of the cross is not disciplined enough to endure hardness, he or she will end up like Esau, who sold his birthright for a plate of pottage (Hebrews 12:16). Our Lord Jesus had laid down a good example for us to follow in this regard when He refused to turn stone to bread even though He was hungry (Luke 4:3-4). A soldier of Jesus Christ avoids any distraction that would take his or her focus away from the way of the cross he or she is fighting to defend. Materialism is not a problem for a true soldier of Jesus Christ who has learnt to be modest. Concerning this, our Commander-in-Chief in Luke 12:15 said this to us:

“…Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

Just as soldiers fight to defend the territorial integrity of the kingdom of their king, a soldier of Jesus Christ fights against sin, which destroys mankind and God’s created world, by preaching the gospel. He or she preaches the love of God so that men may embrace it and live a good life that will impact the lives of others positively. Soldiers of Jesus Christ do not only fight to defend, they also attack the opposing kingdom of the devil. They do this by proclaiming the word of God, which is alive and powerful, against the workers of iniquity. While putting on the whole armor of God, soldiers of Christ also exercise their divinely given authority in the place of prayer. They have no time for frivolities because they are always watchful. Beloved, are you numbered among the soldiers of Jesus Christ? Are you thriving in spite of the challenges of the call to fight against unrighteousness? May the Lord see you through to the very end in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point: Father, please uphold me to the very end, deliver me from all forms of worldly entanglement and grant me grace to please you all the way.
