Friends of Heroic Southwest Pilot Tammie Jo Say She Gives ‘God the Credit’ for Safely Landing Plane

Expand | Collapse
(Screen Shot: NBC News)Tammie Jo Shults, the Southwest pilot forced into an emergency landing on Tuesday, is a “strong Christian lady” whose faith likely contributed to her calm state during the landing, according to friends and family.

Tammie Jo Shults, the pilot who safely landed Southwest flight 1380 after the plane’s left engine exploded, is giving “God all the credit” after the frightening incident, according to her Christian friends.

“We have a Lord that transcends our daily trials. I give God the credit,” Shults told her friend, Cindy Foster, her college roommate at MidAmerica Nazarene University, CBN reports.

“Like many of our alumni, Tammie Jo Shults exemplifies all that MNU is about,” Kevin Garber, MNU director of alumni, said in a statement. “I think her strong Christian faith combined with her tenacity and persistence kept her calm in the face of a terrifying situation.”

The 56-year-old retired Navy pilot, who was the first woman to fly the “Top Gun” F-18 Hornet, was hailed a hero after she was forced to make an emergency landing at the Philadelphia International Airport on a flight from New York to Dallas when one of the two engines blew and the plane began to rapidly descend with 144 passengers and five crew members onboard.

“Everybody is talking about Tammie Jo and how cool and calm she was in a crisis, and that’s just Tammie Jo,” Rachel Russo, who attends church with Shults, said. “That’s how she’s wired.”

There was one fatality, however, because as the plane’s left engine exploded shrapnel from the explosion blew out a window and Jennifer Riordan, 43, was…

Open Heavens 22nd April 2018 Sunday — The Need For Miracles

Topic: The Need For Miracles [Open Heavens 22 April 2018, Sunday]

Memorise: “God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?”Hebrews 2:4

Read: John 11:39-45 (KJV)

39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

Bible in One Year: Judges 15-16, Titus 2-3.

MESSAGE:

A careful study of the miracles recorded in the Bible will reveal some truths to the discerning. Such a study will reveal that miracles are supernatural and that they are an intervention of God in the affairs of men. This study will also reveal that miracles happen only when God deems it necessary. In other words God divinely intervenes when the ability of man fails and He wants to show His Almightiness. God does not waste His divine intervention wherever He has given man the enablement to act. For example, He stopped sending manna to the children of Israel the moment they got settled in the Promise Land. They had to cultivate and eat from the land, which was flowing with milk and honey, Joshua 5:12 says,

“And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.”

The truth of the matter is that although God was still capable of sending manna, He stopped sending it because there was no need for it anymore. He expected His children as His image carriers and co-creators with Him to cultivate the land. Also, in Exodus 14:15-16, even though the Lord was willing to intervene for the salvation of Israel at the Red Sea, He told Moses to play his part. If a child of God fails to understand this principle, it can cause him or her untold pain and disappointment due to failure to act where he or she ought to.

Having established these truths, we must also realize that the ability to work miracles is like a stamp of approval given by God to His chosen human vessels. In today’s Bible reading, Jesus called for His Father’s intervention in the case of Lazarus who was dead. Why did He call on the Father to intervene? John 11:42 says,

“And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.”

Also, in today’s memory verse, “divers miracles” is listed as one of those supernatural things God uses to bear witness to the message of His chosen vessels. Without this witness, our message will be like that of mere orators and philosophers. Jesus needed miracles to establish His mission, and so do we. Let us therefore thirst for this gift to glorify the Almighty God.

Prayer Point: Father, from today, please confirm my witness of You by working Your miracles through me.

Hymn 7: Wonderful Story Of Love.

1. Wonderful story of love;
Tell it to me again;
Wonderful story of love;
Wake the immortal strain!
Angels with rapture announce it,
Shepherds with wonder receive it;
Sinner, oh, won’t you believe it?
Wonderful story of love.

o Refrain:
Wonderful! Wonderful!
Wonderful, wonderful story of love.

2. Wonderful story of love;
Though you are far away;
Wonderful story of love;
Still He doth call today;
Calling from Calvary’s mountain,
Down from the crystal-bright fountain,
E’en from the dawn of creation,
Wonderful story of love.

3. Wonderful story of love;
Jesus provides a rest;
Wonderful story of love;
For all the pure and blest,
Rest in those mansions above us,
With those who’ve gone on before us,
Singing the rapturous chorus,
Wonderful story of love.

American Anglicans would face ‘consequences’ over gender neutral wedding services

The Episcopal Church (TEC) has been warned its place within the international Anglican family could be placed in jeopardy if it departs from standard Anglican practise by replacing references to a “husband and wife” with “the union of two people”.

In a letter seen by The Times, the Church of England’s general secretary William Nye said “the pressure to dissociate the Church of England from TEC in all manner of ways would increase”.

The TEC clashed with conservative elements within the Anglican Communion in 2015 when it became the first Anglican church to allow same-sex weddings.

The Times reports a proposed new wording for marriage ceremonies conducted by TEC priests would also see the intention of marriage no longer “for the procreation of children” but with offering “the gift of children”.

Anthony Devlin/PA Wire

In his article, Times reporter Kaya Burgess described the proposed new marriage rites as “gay friendly” and “more inclusive of same-sex couples who may want to adopt”.

In an eight-page document, Mr Nye, the Church of England’s most senior lay person, said many people would feel the proposed changes would leave the TEC “no room to remain authentically part of global Anglicanism.”

Premier has contacted the Episcopal Church for a response.

What Does the Data Show?

(Photo: REUTERS/Jonathan Drake)Crosses for the victims of yesterday’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School hang on a fence a short distance from the school in Parkland, Florida, U.S., February 15, 2018.

This is part 3 of The Christian Post’s series on youth and school violence. You can read part 1 here and part 2 here

“I should be writing my college essay, not my will.” This message was seen on a protest sign held by a student showcasing their frustration with the problem of school violence.

School shootings in Kentucky, Florida and Maryland this year have brought a growing awareness to the problem of violence in schools. The issue is a complex problem that brings passionate debate over topics like gun control, graphic entertainment, and morality among youth.

This article is part three of The Christian Post’s series examining the many aspects of the issue, recognizing that school-based violence is a multipronged problem that goes beyond partisanship.

Data on the issue of school violence is not always clear. For example, a common statistic cited by news outlets and public figures is that, with the tragic event at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, there have thus far been 18 school shootings since 2018 began.

The statistic comes from the nonprofit group Everytown for Gun Safety, which advocates for gun control reforms and curbing of firearms violence.

According to an analysis published Feb. 15 by The Washington Post, however, this statistic is deceptive because it includes any time a firearm has been discharged on a school campus.

Celebrity tour bus in Christian homeless shelter transformation plan

Embassy says the double-decker is currently among a fleet used by stars including Jools Holland and indie rock band Kaiser Chiefs.

Founder, Sid Williams told Premier the vehicle requires minimal adjustments and will help relieve pressure on existing shelters in the city.

He explained: “It’s not a regular Routemaster… it’s purpose built; it already has 14 beds, two lounges, a kitchen, a toilet and loads of storage.”

Funds totalling £30,000 have been secure the purchase – but Embassy says continued fundraising will be required to meet the service’s £100,000-per-year running costs.

Mr Williams continued: “Although there are a few shelters, there’s a huge disparity between the number of beds available and people sleeping rough.

Yui Mok/PA Wire

“Everybody [homeless services] was saying to me, ‘If you could provide more emergency accommodation, that would help us in our job of getting people off the street.”

The homeless shelter, which is intended to be fully-operational by this winter, will accept clients all year round via referrals from councils and other local agencies.

Describing how the Christian ethos of the charity will be reflected in the ministry of the bus, Mr Williams added: “It starts with rest but, also, it’s building relationships [and] connecting people to jobs.

“We’re going to be staffed by Christians and Christian…

Tax Day has come and gone. For many, yesterday was a painful experience as they realized they owed the government more than expected. The good news is that, a year from now, filling out your 2018 taxes does not have to result in a repeat performance.
Today is a great day to take a few steps in helping ensure that you will not get caught off guard next year.

Too Many Pastors Are ‘Digging Their Graves With Their Teeth’ — Facts & Trends

There’s a good reason for the spring in Jeremy Atwood’s step. The Glasgow, Kentucky, pastor has lost 240 pounds over the past two years on a quest to restore his physical and spiritual health. For Atwood, food had become a vice that was sapping his energy and hindering his ministry. Years of unchecked eating had brought him to the brink of 500 pounds.

4 Reasons Why Pastoral Honeymoons Are ShrinkingEric Geiger

In the last several years, I have had many conversations with pastors who have expressed surprise over how short “the honeymoon” period was at their new church. At first I thought that maybe it was a few isolated cases, but I have been hearing it continually for several years. All of these pastors had served faithfully in other contexts, and in those other contexts experienced longer honeymoons, but not so this time around.

Two-thirds of US senators sign letter demanding pastor Andrew Brunson’s release

The note, signed on Friday by 43 Republicans and 23 Democrats in the upper chamber of the US Congress, describes Andrew Brunson as a “law-abiding American citizen”.

It brands accusations brought against the 50-year-old from North Carolina as an “absurd collection of anonymous accusations, flights of fantasy, and random character assassination”.

The signatories state they endorse cooperation between American and Turkish officials concerning investigations into individuals thought to be involved in a violent bid to overthrow the Turkish government in July 2016.

They continued: “However, we are deeply disturbed that the Turkish government has gone beyond legitimate action against the coup plotters to undermine Turkey’s own rule of law and democratic traditions.

“Under the State of Emergency, tens of thousands of Turkey’s own citizens as well as some citizens of the United States and other countries have been arrested, dismissed from employment or otherwise seen their lives destroyed on vague charges and dubious evidence.”

Brunson, who has lived in Turkey for more than 20 years and had been leading a Protestant church in the Mediterranean city of Izmir, faces up to 35 years in prison if found guilty of terrorism and espionage charges.

He was first detained in October 2016 and…

Christian lawyers seek European court appeal for parents of Alfie Evans

Staff at the Christian Legal Centre announced that have asked the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to consider the case of Alfie Evans for a second time, on behalf of his parents.

Andrea Williams, chief executive of the Centre, which is now representing Alfie’s family, said: “We are going to appeal to the ECHR hoping we can stay the end of life order our courts have made.”

The development comes after the UK’s Supreme Court refused on Friday to consider the case of Tom Evans and Kate James for a second time. The couple previously lost a second challenge over their child at the Court of Appeal.

Three justices from the most senior court in the country concluded there is “no hope” in the 23-month-old getting better and there is “no reason for further delay” in medical staff implementing an end-of-life care plan.

Alfies Army Official/PA Wire

The judges decided Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool “must be free to do what has been determined to be in Alfie’s best interests”.

Tom Evans and Kate James have received an invitation from the Pope – who tweeted his support for Alfie earlier this month – to take the toddler to a Vatican-run children’s hospital in Rome for further treatment.

In a statement, Mr Evans said: “We will not give up.

“We will continue to fight, by all means available to us within the law, to save our son’s life.”

Police joked about arresting Sir Cliff Richard at Wimbledon, judge hears

BBC reporter Dan Johnson, who broke a story about the Christian entertainer being investigated and his home being searched, told colleague Declan Wilson about the joke, Mr Justice Mann heard.

Mr Wilson told the judge how the idea left him “incredulous”.

Sir Cliff has sued the BBC over coverage of the South Yorkshire Police search in August 2014 and wants damages at the “top end” of the scale.

He says the coverage, which involved the use of a helicopter, was a “very serious invasion” of his privacy.

The 77-year-old singer said he decided not to attend Wimbledon in 2015 because the investigation was on-going and he was under “suspicion”.

The BBC disputes his claims.

Bosses say coverage of the search of the apartment in Sunningdale, Berkshire, was accurate and in good faith.

Yui Mok/PA Wire

Mr Justice Mann has heard how Mr Johnson asked a South Yorkshire Police press officer if Sir Cliff was on the “radar” after getting a tip that the singer was being investigated.

Lawyers representing Sir Cliff have suggested that reporter Dan Johnson had “strong-armed” South Yorkshire Police into telling him a search of Sir Cliff’s apartment would take place.

They have suggested that he threatened to reveal information about their sex-assault investigation against detectives’ wishes if he did not get co-operation.

Mr Johnson has denied the suggestion.

He…

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 21 April 2018 Devotional — Quit Complaining

Topic: Quit Complaining [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Saturday April 21, 2018]

He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently. — 1 Corinthians 10:13 AMPC

Today, thank God and decide not to complain about anything. Ask Him to show you anytime you are getting ready to complain, and to help you hold your tongue. Today, give thanks for what you have without looking at what you don’t have. Some people have the same problems you have, but they don’t know God. At least you can give thanks that God is in your life.

The Word says, “Let there be no filthiness (obscenity, indecency) nor foolish and sinful (silly and corrupt) talk, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting or becoming; but instead voice your thankfulness [to God]” (Ephesians 5:4 AMPC). Guard your tongue today.

Prayer Starter: Father, thank You for all of Your wonderful blessings. Please help me not to complain but instead voice my gratitude. I ask for Your help to continually focus on the good and view life from Your perspective. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
