Government Sides with Archdiocese in Bus Ad Case

The U.S. Justice Department has sided with the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., in a case against local censorship of religious advertising. Last fall, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) rejected the archdiocese’s Christmas ad, which depicted shepherds following the star of Bethlehem and included the message: “Find the perfect gift.” The ad also listed the web address for a site with information about the archdiocese’s Christmas events and the phrase, “Jesus is the perfect gift.”

The transit authority said it does not allow any ads promoting religion, but the Justice Department argued it can’t use that policy to justify viewpoint discrimination. In a friend-of-the-court brief filed last week, the department said because the transit authority accepts other ads related to Christmas, including those encouraging charitable giving, it cannot reject the archdiocese’s ads.

“Just as a university cannot subsidize secular speech on a given topic while refusing to subsidize religious speech on the same topic, WMATA cannot accept a secular Christmas – encouraging charitable giving while rejecting religious Christmas ads that do the same,” the brief stated. In essence, the department argued, the transit authority is turning the Constitution on its head by favoring commercial speech, including ads for Christmas gifts, over First…

Christians told to be ‘gracious’ over civil partnerships

Harry Benson, research director at the Marriage Foundation, made the comment before MPs vote on a bill this week that would legalise heterosexual civil partnerships.

Benson, who is a Christian, told Premier News Hour: “For the tiny minority of people who don’t get married for some obscure sort of ideological reason, this is a way for them to express the same commitment that you get in marriage but just call it a different name.

“I think we can afford to be a little gracious on these sorts of issues.”

Benson said some couples want a civil marriage because “there’s a historical hangover” of people thinking marriages are bad, instead of “attributing it to bad people”.

Because this of this ideology, Benson said Christians should be gracious. He also said this law wouldn’t be anti-marriage.

“As a Christian I think this is us being gracious about this issue and also being sensible and pragmatic,” he said.

“In no way will this undermine marriage for one second. It’s all about lifelong commitment. It’s all about encouraging couples to make a formal commitment to one another in exactly the same way you would make the Biblical idea of covenant.”

The bill, which has cross-party support, would affect more than 3 million couples if approved.

Christian Students Knifed, Beaten in High School Clash in Kenya

Christian Students Knifed, Beaten in High School Clash in Kenya

Muslim students at a high school in Nairobi on Tuesdaynight (Jan. 23) beat and stabbed Christians who refused to convert to Islam, a local source said.

Tensions had been growing for weeks at Jamhuri High School in northern Nairobi, with Muslims primarily of Somali, Boran and Oromo descent complaining of discrimination. Due to increasing hostilities, the boarding school had designated separate bathrooms and separate sections in the library for Christians and Muslims, a source told Morning Star News.

The conflict came to a head Tuesday night (Jan. 23), when Muslim students began speaking in inflammatory terms and tried to force Christian students to recite the Islamic creed for conversion and force students to participate in Muslim cleansing rituals, a source on campus who requested anonymity said.

“Some Muslim students forcefully tried to induct Christian students into their Islam faith, and those who refused were knifed, while others were physically beaten,” the source told Morning Star News by phone. “The knives and machetes used are alleged to have come from outside the school.”

At least 35 of the school’s 1,500 students were injured, including some Muslims when the Christian students tried to defend themselves, the source said. Some Christian students received hospital treatment for stab wounds and dislocated bones in their hands and joints,…

Christian parents learn doctors can stop providing treatment to brain-damaged son

Specialists at King’s College Hospital said giving further intensive care treatment to 11-month-old Isaiah Haastrup was “futile, burdensome and not in his best interests”.

They had asked a judge to give them the go-ahead to provide only palliative care.

Isaiah’s mother, Takesha Thomas, and father Lanre Haastrup, who are both 36 and from Peckham, south-east London, wanted treatment to continue.

Thomas told the private trial last week: “I am a Pentecostal Christian.

“For me, I don’t think it is right to say who should live or who should die.”

“If God wants to take the person, He will.”

Mr Justice MacDonald on Monday ruled that doctors could stop providing life-support treatment.

The judge, who had analysed evidence at a trial in the Family Division of the High Court in London earlier this month, said he had reached his decision with “profound sadness”.

Mr Haastrup said he and Miss Thomas were disappointed and would discuss the judge’s ruling with lawyers.

Barrister Fiona Paterson, who represented King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at hearings, had told Mr Justice MacDonald how Isaiah was born at King’s College Hospital on February 18 2017 and was severely disabled.

She said nobody could understand the pain and suffering Isaiah’s parents had endured.

But she said overwhelming medical evidence showed that stopping…

Justin Bieber Attends Hillsong Church with Formerly Estranged Mother

Justin Bieber Attends Hillsong Church with Formerly Estranged Mother

Pop star Justin Bieber was recently seen attending a Hillsong church service with his mother.

In the past couple years, Bieber has seemed to turn his life around. He often speaks of his Christian faith and shares Christian messages on social media.

According to CBN News, Bieber attended a Wednesday evening church service at Hillsong’s Beverly Hills campus with his mother, Pattie Mallette.

Although Mallette raised Bieber in the faith and even introduced him to his friend and mentor Pastor Judah Smith, the two were estranged for some time.

“I was distant because I was ashamed,” Bieber shared. “I never wanted my mom to be disappointed in me and I knew she was. We spent some time not talking, so it takes time to rebuild that trust. She’s living in Hawaii now, so it’s hard, but getting better.”

Mallette has also shared that, although it is tough as a parent to step back, it is important to allow one’s children to make their own choices at some point:

“Me, personally, I would love to be with him all the time and to be able to ground him and deal with his problems and do all of that stuff, but at some point the parenting style changes. I hope to still be a respected voice in his ear,” she shared.

It seems, however, that the relationship between mother and son is mending. Mallette and Bieber even vacationed together recently in the Maldives.

Just last…

Billy Graham’s Granddaughter Urges Evangelicals to Call Out Trump for ‘Disgusting Behavior’

(Screenshot: CNN)Jerushah Armfield (R) speaking on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront” on January 26, 2017.

Jerushah Armfield, one of the granddaughters of renowned evangelist Billy Graham, has argued that President Donald Trump has failed to repent and apologize for his “dehumanizing” remarks on Haiti and other poverty-stricken countries.

“In order to forgive somebody, that individual needs to repent and apologize. And I don’t think America has seen that from our president in any scenario,” Armfield said on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront” on Friday evening.

The author and pastor’s wife in South Carolina took issue with the context around Trump recently describing certain nations as “s***hole” countries, though the president has denied using that specific word.

“I think a lot of times people seem to be focusing on the language that he used, which really wasn’t the issue,” Armfield continued.

“I think it was the context of what he said, around the language that he used. I think it was the disheartening, dehumanizing comments that were said around the word.”

Trump allegedly made the remark during an Oval Office discussion on immigration earlier this month, when sources claim he said: “Why are we having all these people from s***hole countries come here?” in reference to Haiti, El…

I’m not coming to preach hate

He’s been labelled a hate preacher ahead of his visit to Blackpool in September where he’ll speak at the Lancashire Festival of Hope.

Previous comments he’s made on homosexuality and Islam have led to some saying he shouldn’t be given a platform in this country.

Speaking exclusively to Premier in an in-depth interview ahead of the event, he said: “I don’t think I’ve been to any country where everybody was supportive – there’s always churches or groups who don’t like my theology or that we associate with this group or that group.

“I’m not coming to preach hate, I’m here to preach about a saviour – Jesus Christ who can make a difference in our lives if we put our faith and trust in him.”

Mr Graham also said his father Billy, who held rallies in stadiums across the UK throughout his preaching career, also faced similar criticism.

“They tried to stop him coming,” he said. “He was due off a boat into Southampton and there were petitions to stop him coming and members of parliament speaking against him.”

Thousands are expected to hear Franklin Graham when he preaches at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens between 21st and 23rd September 2018.

Offering an invite to his critics, he said: “I’m coming to preach what the Bible says, what God says – I’m not coming with my own message.

“I’m not coming to speak against anyone; I’m not there…
