Christian charity aims to change lives of millions through insurance programme

The African and Asian Resilience in Disaster Insurance Scheme (ARDIS) is thought to be the world’s largest non-governmental climate insurance programme and is projected to support four million people in six countries.

VisionFund International, which is part of Christian charity World Vision, and Parametrics started the scheme.

Stewart McCulloch, with VisionFund, told Premier News Hour the $10 million program will help the most vulnerable.

“This is aimed at agricultural communities going through major climate shocks, particularly droughts to start with,” he said.

“At that point the farmers’ crops are failing. In a rural community if farmers are having a bad time everybody a having a bad time.”

VisionFund

As soon as disaster strikes in Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Zambia, Cambodia and Myanmar, ARDIS funding will kick in to minimise harm to a community’s economy.

“We’re providing the resources for that community to redirect its efforts, chose different crops, and replant or diversify into things that allow them to work their way through the drought and keep their livelihoods going,” McCulloch added.

“The critical thing is that it’s very cheap and it provides meaningful climate protection for families without them having to do a huge amount to gain the protection.”

The programme contributes to a major goal of G7, a group of seven countries…

Open Heavens 19 January 2018: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – God’s Foot Soldiers?

Open Heavens 19 January 2018: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – God’s Foot Soldiers?

Topic: God’s Foot Soldiers? [Open Heavens Friday 19th January 2018]

Memorise: Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.2 Timothy 2:3

Read: 1 Samuel 17:32-37 (KJV)

32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

Bible in One Year: Genesis 40-41, Revelation 18:1-18

MESSAGE:

Since Satan was cast out of heaven, he has been waging war against everything that represents God and godliness on the earth (Matthew 16:23, 2 Timothy 3:12). Satan was cast out because he decided to rebel against the Almighty (Isaiah 14:12-15). His current game plan is to deceive as many people as possible into rebelling against God, so that they will also join him in the Lake of Fire, which is the eternal place of punishment prepared for him and his cohorts (Matthew 25:41, Revelation 20:10). To destroy the work of the devil on earth and to manifest the plan of God for mankind, God has chosen to raise an army to Himself among men. If you have surrendered your life to Christ, you are part of this army. As a soldier of God’s army, in Jeremiah 51:20, God declares these words to you:

“Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;”

The nations and kingdoms in this declaration are not just physical, they are spiritual. The Holy Spirit made this clear to us in Ephesians 6:12, and He also teaches us that the weapon with which we wage war in God’s army are not physical weapons (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

As a soldier in God’s army, you need to take a clue from David in today’s Bible text. He presented himself as God’s battle-axe and he was mightily used of God to bring into captivity every thought and arrogance presented by Goliath. It is interesting to note that even Goliath, as huge as he was and as sophisticated as his weapons were, did not rely on his physical ability or weapons alone. 1 Samuel 17:43b says,

“And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.”

As God’s foot-soldier, you need to know your God through and through, because only those who know their God can perform valiantly at the battlefront (Daniel 11:32). Because David knew his God, even without a sword in his hand, he boldly replied Goliath with these words of faith in 1 Samuel 17:45-46:

“…I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee…”

Are you presently fighting a battle in your life? This should serve as a template for you. Turn to God for victory and you shall be victorious through the Name and Blood of Jesus Christ (Luke 10:17, Philippians 2:10, Revelation 12:11).

Action Point: Using the Name of Jesus, speak against every spiritual force contending with God’s plan for your life and family.

Hymn 14: Onward Christian Soldier

1. Onward Christian soldiers!
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before.
Christ, the royal Master,
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,
See, His banners go!

Chorus:
Onward, Christian soldiers!
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus,
Going on before.

2. At the name of Jesus
Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver
At the shout of praise:
Brothers, lift your voices,
Loud your anthems raise!

3. Like a mighty army
Moves the Church of God:
Brothers, we are treading
Where the saints have trod;
We are not divided,
All one Body we—
One in faith and Spirit,
One charity.

4. Onward, then, ye people!
Join our happy throng;
Blend with ours your voices
In the triumph song.
Glory, laud and honour
Unto Christ, the King;
This through countless ages
Men and angels sing.

New Poll Shows Encouraging Pro-life Trends

New Poll Shows Encouraging Pro-life Trends

A new poll showed that 52 percent of respondents described their position on abortion as “pro-choice.”

However, the poll, from the Knights of Columbus, also found that 44 percent of respondents described themselves as “pro-life.” Four percent said they were unsure.

In 2017’s poll, 56 percent said they were “pro-choice” and 39 percent said they were “pro-life.”

“Polling often finds conflicting views on the question, with voters leaning slightly more ‘pro-choice’ than ‘pro-life,’ and relatively widespread anxiety about the prospect of overturning the Court-invented ‘right’ to abortion,” says Guy Benson, political editor for Townhall.com.

Among the other findings in the poll:

  • 76 percent believe that legal abortion should be limited to the first trimester, allowed in only rare circumstances or prohibited entirely.

  • 50 percent believe abortion should only be allowed in rare circumstances or prohibited entirely.

  • 52 percent said abortion “does more harm than good” in the long run

  • 29 percent said it “improves a woman’s life”

Also, more than 60 percent of respondents said they were in favor of a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

During the week of the annual March for Life, the House of Representatives is expected to voteon the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, a bill that says if a baby is born after an…

Pope Marries Couple On Papal Plane In Chile

Bride Paola Podest and groom Carlos Ciuffardi said “I do” after telling Francis that they had been married in a civil service in 2010.

However, they said they were unable to follow up with a church ceremony because of the 2010 earthquake that hit Chile.

Francis then offered to marry the LATAM flight attendants aboard the aircraft en route to the northern city of Iquique, and they both readily agreed.

The head of the airline served as the witness.

Mr Ciuffardi told journalists in the aisle of the Airbus 321 that Francis told him it was “historic”, and no pope had ever before married a couple aboard a plane.

MPs shocked by tales of Christian persecution

Several politicians including Labour’s Ben Bradshaw and the Conservative’s Fiona Bruce attended a briefing at Parliament on Wednesday night which highlighted nations where persecution is most severe.

An Egyptian man called “Michael” told delegates about an Islamic extremist mob that attacked a church belonging to his country’s Evangelical community.

The event was organised by the Christian charity Open Doors UK, which was unveiling its World Watch List Report 2018 – a list of 50 countries where persecution is of serious concern.

Members of Parliament were repeatedly summoned from the event at the Commons’ Member’s Dining Room to the House of Commons, where various votes were being held on the EU withdrawal bill.

Reflecting on the event, Robert Courts – the MP for Whitney in Oxfordshire – said: “It’s utterly extraordinary that in the modern world where we would all hope to have freedom of religion and of belief, and freedom to practise that belief, it is devastating that so many people all over the world are persecuted for that fundamental basic human right.”

“Hannah”, a woman visiting the UK from Pakistan, spoke to Premier about her fear of punishment if she spoke out openly about her faith.

Former Cabinet minister and MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers said: “There was a point in which is felt quite tearful;…

Call for prayer as survey reveals GP work overload

The industry magazine Pulse spoke to 900 GPs in the UK, and found each typical doctor deals with more than 41 patients a day.

Some even reported to attend to over 70 people each day.

Steve Fouch from the Christian Medical Fellowship told Premier Christian doctors he knows who want to invest in the people they see, are struggling to do so.

He added: “That is very demotivating when you’re really putting all the hours that God sends your way into your work.”

Meanwhile, a new GP contract that aims to reduce the pressure on family doctors is to be implemented after winning the backing of the profession.

A poll of doctors found more than seven out of ten were in favour of adopting the new deal, which was drawn up by the Scottish Government and the British Medical Association.

The new contract – which is backed with £100 million of Scottish Government funding in its first year – aims to reduce the workload family doctors face at the same time as bringing in a minimum earning expectation of just over £80,000 a year.

Fouch told Premier the importance of Christians remembering GPs in their prayers.

“I think praying for them – their physical and mental health is very important because they are human as well and the human body and mind can only cope with so much… and for them to have refreshment, encouragement and support from the community around them as well,” he added.

Listen to Steve Fouch from the Christian Medical…
