Eight Earthquakes Strike Iran-Iraq Border, Injuring 4

Eight Earthquakes Strike Iran-Iraq Border, Injuring 4

Eight earthquakes struck the Iran-Iraq border area Thursday in apparent aftershocks from a major earthquake that hit the same area in November.

More than 530 people died in that earthquake in Iran. In Thursday’s quakes, four people suffered minor injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said seven of the earthquakes hit near the Iraqi city of Mandali, which is just 75 miles northeast of the Iraqi capital. The eighth earthquake struck near Mehran in western Iraq.

The earthquakes all hit within an hour of each other. Six had a preliminary magnitude of at least 5 and two registered at magnitude 4, according to reports. Earthquakes that register as 5 are considered moderate.

Also, according to the USGS, the earthquakes hit at a depth of about six miles.

“It’s ongoing activity there,” Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist with the USGS told The Associated Press. “If there was a stressed fault that’s ready to move, they happen like that until the stresses are relieved, so it’s not too unusual.”

In November, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the same area and killed more than 530 people and injured thousands in Iran. In Iraq, nine people were killed and 550 were injured, according to the United Nations.

Many buildings collapsed or sustained major damage in November’s quake. Many people are still living in temporary homes and tents.

Iran is located over major fault lines and is prone to…

Christians react to Theresa May’s environment speech

Launching her 25-year environment plan, Theresa May explained that supermarkets will be encouraged to have plastic-free aisles, millions of trees will be planted and more money will be put into outdoor spaces for schools.

The current 5p plastic bag charge only applies to companies of over 250 employees but May said, given its “inspiring” success in reducing the number of plastic bags by nine million, she will extend it to smaller shops.

Speaking on Premier, Paul Bodenham from the Green Christian group said he did agree with some of what May is proposing: “There needs to be signals in the market to ensure that the polluter pays, it’s that principle being produced here.”

However, he added: “My worry is that it’s a bit of a fig leaf really – you’re going have these little, popular polices – I think they will be popular, they’ll be well understood – but they will be pretty superficial.”

Explaining that small moves won’t solve the issue, he said: “What we need is a whole look at the industrial strategy of this country that is going to re-engineer the economy so that it’s low-resource and low-carbon, and it [the Prime Minister’s strategy] needs to go a lot deeper.”

Reacting to the speech Deborah Tomkins, also from Green Christian, said: “It’s a good start in the right direction, I think we can all agree with that…

“I think it doesn’t go far enough and that’s partly because all the structures are already in place and it takes time to change things.”

The lack of…

Open Heavens 12 January 2018: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – He Saves To The Uttermost

Open Heavens 12 January 2018: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – He Saves To The Uttermost

Topic: He Saves To The Uttermost [Open Heavens Friday 12th January 2018]

Memorise: Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. – Hebrews 7:25

Read: Mark 2:1-12 (KJV)

1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.

2 And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

3 And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.

4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

6 But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,

7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

Bible in One Year: Genesis 27-28, Revelation 11, Hymn: Sing Hymn 3: What Can Wash Away My Sins

MESSAGE:

Today’s Bible reading contains an interesting story that confirms Jesus Christ as the authentic Saviour of the body, soul and spirit of mankind. A four-man squad brought a paralytic man face to face with Jesus Christ while He was preaching in a house. Amazingly, in Mark 2:5b, the first thing Jesus Christ said to the young man was,

“Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.”

To the religious leaders of Jesus’ day, this was a strange and conceited statement, which should not be uttered by any man. As they reasoned in their heart on how a man could proclaim another man’s sins to be forgiven, Jesus confronted with the truth of sin as the origin of man’s trouble on earth. Hear what He said in Mark 2:9-11:

9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? 10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) 11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.”

On hearing this, the sick got healed; people were so happy for him, and they glorified God.

There are lots of lessons to be learnt from this story; one of which is that sin brings about physical and spiritual calamity. Another lesson is that to overcome physical calamity, the issue of sin must be dealt with first. It becomes easier for healing to take place when the issue of sin has been settled because the spiritual controls the physical. Sometimes we fail to look beyond the physical in our bid to solve spiritually-inflicted problems, and so we remain in this problem perpetually. Beloved, have you found out the root cause of the problem you are confronted with? Are they spiritual or physical in nature? The good news is that whether they are spiritual or physical, Jesus Christ is more than able to solve them today. In Luke 4:18-19, says this concerning Him:

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Beloved, do you want salvation in every facet of life? Jesus Christ is the one that you need. To receive His salvation, all He requires of you is a total surrender of your heart to His Lordship. If you can do this today, He will save you completely.

Action Point: Ask the Great Physician to heal you of any spiritual or physical infirmity challenging your life.

Hymn 3: What Can Wash Away My Sins

1. What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Chorus:
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

2. For my cleansing this I see
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
For my pardon this my plea
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

3. Nothing can my sin erase
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
Naught of works, ’tis all of grace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

4. This is all my hope and peace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
This is all my righteousness
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

Rich Stearns to Retire from Charity Behemoth World Vision

Rich Stearns to Retire from Charity Behemoth World Vision

Rich Stearns will retire as president of World Vision, the Christian humanitarian agency known for its focus on children, after two decades building it into one of America’s largest charities.

On Tuesday (Jan. 9), the day he made the announcement, he tweeted:

“Today, after 20 years as President of @WorldVisionUSA, I announced my intention to retire at the end of 2018. I feel privileged to have had this opportunity to serve with some of the most amazing faith heroes on the planet – my colleagues all across the world. Thank you Lord!”

During his tenure, World Vision grew to collect $1 billion in annual revenue in 2017,  making the 67-year-old ministry No. 15 on Forbes’ list of the nation’s largest charities. The agency’s statement on Stearns cites its “two million supporters, child sponsors, and partners and says it is on track to serve 30 million children by 2022.”

That track was nearly derailed in March 2014, however, with a blowup in Christian evangelical circles over how World Vision would deal with LGBT…

Pastor Andy Savage Won’t Face Charges for Sexual Assault; Janet Mefferd Says He Shouldn’t Be Pastor

(Photo: Facebook)Andy Savage (R), teaching pastor of the popular Highpoint Church Memphis in Tennessee and his wife Amanda.

Teaching Pastor Andy Savage of Highpoint Church in Memphis, Tennessee, won’t be charged with a crime after recently confessing to sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl while he was her youth pastor 20 years ago, Texas law enforcement officials say.

The victim, Jules Woodson, recently reported the assault to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department in Texas.

In a statement highlighted by Local Memphis, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office said they “researched the law that would have applied in 1998 for the statute of limitations” and unfortunately under the law that would have applied for that period the statute of limitations has passed so they are unable to file any charges.

“Using the current statute we would have some possible options but we are limited to the law as it was at the time of the offense in 1998. As a result we are unable to investigate and seek justice to the full extent of what would we normally would in such a case,” the statement noted.

Savage, 42, admitted Friday that he “regretfully had a sexual incident” with Woodson while she was a high school senior but had repented and tried to make amends since the assault…

Church of England’s Christmas Campaign reached 6.8 million people

A total of 6.8 million people engaged with the campaign through print and digital media, which was aimed at encouraging people across the country to start or strengthen their faith journey.

In 2016, 1.5 million people were reached.

The Church released three videos throughout December to showcase some of the many services that took place during Advent and Christmas.

A series of reflections called “Your Christmas Journey” were printed and published online to help people think about Advent and Christmas and 2018.

Adrian Harris, head of digital communications at the Church of England, told Premier the Church is “really pleased” with the numbers.

The “Your Christmas Journey” reflections were seen a total of 844,000 times across social media, email and by text message, with over 2 million video views across reflections and services.

Church House Publishing sold 80,000 copies of the booklet to churches to share with congregations and 18,000 were distributed free to clergy.

The Church also welcomed figures which suggest its new digital strategy could have helped contribute to the increased number of people engaging with #GodWithUs.

In a statement, the Church said: “We’re delighted that the campaign brought more people into relationship with God and the Church at this key moment in the Christian year and our prayer is that we build on the successes and learnings to do more for Lent and Christmas 2018.”

Young Texas Church Shooting Victim Finally Returns Home after Months in Hospital

Young Texas Church Shooting Victim Finally Returns Home after Months in Hospital

A young boy who was shot several times in the horrific Sutherland Springs church shooting in November 2017 has finally been released from the hospital.

ABC News reports that now six-year-old Ryland Ward has miraculously fought to survive after receiving multiple gunshot wounds.

Volunteer firefighter Rusty Duncan was one of the first responders to the church shooting and recalls finding Ryland. Duncan said he walked through the Sutherland Springs Baptist Church and “started checking for people’s pulses. That’s where Ryland’s hand reached out from under his stepmom and grabbed my pant leg. I rolled her over and grabbed him and started running outside with him.”

“As soon as we got him outside, his dad [Chris Ward] ran up to me and said, ‘They killed my baby,’ Duncan continued. “And I told his dad, ‘No, he’s not dead, he’s still alive.’”

Sadly, Ryland’s stepmother, Joann Lookingbill Ward, and his two sisters, Brooke Bryanne Ward, 5, and Emily Garcia, 7, lost their lives in the shooting.

Ryland has been undergoing multiple surgeries over the past few months, but is finally in a condition to return home.

“He’s doing great,” Duncan said. “He walked for me for the first time. Of course with my help, but he walked.”

Ryland’s grandmother Sandy Ward added, “It’s just a miracle he survived and is doing as well as he is. We’re just excited to get…
