Swiss church bells can once again chime through night, court rules

The 250-year-old Protestant Reformed Church in Waedenswil, near Zurich, agreed to stop ringing its bells every 15 minutes after a local couple complained about the chimes.

The unnamed couple who lived closed to the church in Switzerland had sought a halt to the hourly and quarter-hourly clangs between 10 pm and 7 am.

They also wanted the early morning ringing to be delayed from 6am to 7am, which the church voluntarily agreed to.

However, many locals were seemingly unphased by the chimes as more than 2,000 residents campaigned against the decision and took the dispute to the federal court.

The court, in Lausanne, overturned the earlier 2015 ruling on Wednesday, stating that reducing the amount of night-time chimes would have a limited effect on the quality of life.

It also said the nightly bell chimes were a part of Wädenswil’s culture and local tradition.

Responding to the court’s decision, Peter Meier, a member of the church’s council told the BBC: “We are delighted with this decision, not just for us, but for the town and the whole community.

“The bells are an important part of the town’s feeling of home, and have long given a rhythm to people’s lives here.”

Revitalization from the Second Chair – Revitalize & Replant #019

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

Trying to lead from the second chair is often frustrating, but can often be rewarding as well. Today we look at that through the lens of revitalization.

Today’s Listener Question:

FROM CALEB

What are ways an Associate Pastor can help initiate a revitalization when the Senior Pastor (past retirement and not interested in retiring) isn’t very interested in engaging the community and is more focused on Inreach and doing the same things they did in the 60s.

Episode Highlights:

  • Many pastors don’t feel the need to retire, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be better for some to move into another phase of ministry.
  • There are no silver bullets in church revitalization.
  • If you want to have a stronger relationship with your boss, you need to spend time with them.
  • If you’re a pastor approaching retirement age, please don’t coast.
  • The ministry area you supervise should be led in congruence with the vision of the church.

The six considerations for leading revitalization from the second chair are:

  1. It ain’t easy
  2. Will the pastor listen to you?
  3. Have you developed a strong relationship with the pastor?
  4. Have you demonstrated loyalty to the pastor?
  5. Are there areas you can lead in revitalization without threatening the pastor?
  6. If it doesn’t work, you may have to be the one to leave

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and

Is this the key to long life?

“I am always thinking for the best. There is always a solution in life. This is what my father has taught me: to always face difficulties and hope for the best.”

This is how one elderly person describes the key to long life, part of a fascinating new study by the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. It reports that such optimism, along with stubbornness, a love for family and country, and a willingness to work hard are traits common among a group of Italians aged ninety to 101.

However, before you decide that optimistic stubbornness is all you need to live longer, take note: other studies claim that owning a dog, drinking coffee, and doing more push-ups and sit-ups contribute to longevity. But another study warns that too much exercise can raise your risk of an early death.

Here’s a fact: no matter how long you live, you won’t live on this planet forever.

Evil people like the Son of Sam killer can develop heart disease. Heroes like John McCain can develop brain cancer. The death rate is still 100 percent.

If we will all die (unless the Lord returns first), why do we try so hard to fight the fact of our mortality?

Jesus is still the Great Physician

One reason is God-given: our Lord cares about our physical health.

Jesus was noted far and wide for his healing ministry (Matthew 4:23-25). The apostles were famous for the healing power of the Spirit at work through them (Acts 5:12-16). The apostle John prayed for Gaius “that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul” (3 John 2).

God calls physicians and scientists to partner with him in healing bodies today. When a baby born with her heart outside her body survived because of extraordinary medical care, I believe her Father in heaven rejoiced.

In my work as Resident Scholar for Ethics with Baylor Scott & White Health, I have marveled at the God-given talents of doctors and care providers. A baby was born recently at Baylor…

Prime Minister Theresa May receives Bible burnt by Islamic State

Christian charity Open Doors UK, along with an Iraqi pastor and Conservative MP Dame Caroline Spelman presented the Bible to Mrs May on Wednesday in Parliament.

Dame Caroline Spelman, Father Daniel and Lisa Pearce present Prime Minister Theresa May with an Arabic Bible.

Their goal was to highlight the plight of Christians and minorities in the Middle East and ask for help in securing a better future for them.

Father Daniel from Erbil in Iraq gave Mrs May the Arabic Bible, which was found at St Mary’s shrine in Karamles, Iraq, after been burnt by IS.

Open Doors said the survival of the Bible symbolises the hope which the Christian community in Iraq continue to hold on to.

Fr Daniel later spoke in Parliament to assembled MPs, Peers and church leaders along with Caroline Spelman, Labour MP Kate Green, Conservative MP Alistair Burt and Open Doors CEO Lisa Pearce.

Scientists Launch Probe on Oumuamua; Is UFO from Another Galaxy?

Scientists are keeping a tight watch over an asteroid named Oumuamua since it appeared in the solar system in October. Experts are baffling at its unusual shape that some suggest the unidentified flying object (UFO) might actually be a spaceship from another galaxy. Will it prove the existence of alien life once and for all?

REUTERS/NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory/HandoutThere’s an unusual space object currently coursing through the solar system that had scientists baffled.

Most asteroids are usually spherical in shape but Oumuamua is oblong and elongated like a cigar. It also measured a hundred meters long. Scientists from the international space program Breakthrough Listen, which has Stephen Hawking as one of its members, plan on searching audio signals from the asteroid for 10 hours.

“Oumuamua’s presence within our solar system affords Breakthrough Listen an opportunity to reach unprecedented sensitivities to possible artificial transmitters and demonstrate our ability to track nearby, fast-moving objects,” project leader Andrew Siemion said. “Whether this object turns out to be artificial or natural, it’s a great target for Listen.”

Scientists still do not know where Oumuamua came from. Imperial College of London Professor Matt Genge also said that planetary experts are “struggling” to properly explain the UFO’s shape.

If Oumuamua formed naturally in the solar system, then scientists should find similarly shaped objects in space. So far, they haven’t found anything like it, thus giving rise to another assumption that…
