Technology reveals face of 17th century Scottish soldier found near church

The soldier was among 3,000 marched south in 1650 following the short but bloody Battle of Dunbar to the then abandoned Durham Cathedral.

In 2013, between 17 and 28 skeletons were found in a mass grave close to the cathedral and Durham University experts carried out extensive research on the remains to identify who they were.

Archaeologists have collaborated with Liverpool John Moores University’s Face Lab specialists – who used sophisticated software to create an digital image of what one of the soldiers looked like.

They took parts of the skull of one of the soldiers, a man aged 18-25 known as Skeleton 22, carefully rebuilt them and made a scan to work from to rebuild his face.

What emerged on screen was a wide-mouthed man with a strong nose and he has been depicted wearing a blue bonnet and the brown jacket typical of a Scottish solider of the time.

Professor Chris Gerrard, of Durham University’s Department of Archaeology, said: “The resulting image is a poignant opportunity to come face to face with a young man who lived and died over 300 years ago.”

Professor Caroline Wilkinson, of Face Lab, said: “Our collaboration with Durham University enabled us to draw on scans and data to create the most accurate and lifelike image possible to enable a true glimpse into the past of this Scottish soldier and how his life had been lived.”

Archbishop of Canterbury urges Christmas ‘ceasefire’ in Brexit dispute

Justin Welby called for a “ceasefire” on the use of insults, “personalised attacks” and “pejorative terms” as the process of leaving the European Union continues.

His intervention came after Tory MP Nadine Dorries accused rebel colleague Dominic Grieve of “treachery” after the Government was defeated in a vote on Brexit legislation.

Conservative rebels have also been subjected to intense criticism from pro-Brexit newspapers as the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill goes through the Commons.

The Archbishop said: “If we go back 103 years, we find Christmas 1914 there was a ceasefire. It would be very good to have a ceasefire from insult and the use of pejorative terms about people at this time.

“As a country, we have a future ahead of us, we have made a decision about Brexit, that is clear, both sides are saying that.

“How we do that is a question for robust political argument, but there is a difference between disagreeing and personalised attacks – and those have to be avoided.

“If we are going to make a success of Brexit, and it’s perfectly possible to do and in fact we should make a success of it – it gives opportunities as well as challenges – then we need a political leadership that is united in their attitude to the future, even if divided on policy.

“Therefore we do need reconciliation and unity.”

On BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the Archbishop also hit out at tax-dodging firms.

He said: “It is clear that a company that has a turnover of several billion…

St Paul’s Cathedral Grenfell fire memorial service to provide ‘words of healing’

Clarrie Mendy (pictured above, left), whose cousin Mary Mendy and her daughter Khadija died in the fire, has been helping shape the multi-faith service, which will focus on remembering the 71 victims of the June 14 tower block blaze.

She said she had asked for the event to be held at St Paul’s Cathedral, exactly six months after the fire, and that she hoped the names of the 53 adults and 18 children who died would be read out as a mark of respect and recognition.

Ms Mendy told the Press Association: “I think a lot of people are anticipating and looking forward to this service at St Paul’s. I know there’s a lot of expectations. I know there’s a lot of diversity from your normal tradition.

“I just hope this service resonates with people, with the hunger people have spiritually.

“A lot of people, right now there’s no trust in the Government, a lot of people have more faith and trust in their religion.”

She went on: “I just hope it measures up to everybody’s expectations and people will … a lot of family will find healing from the messages, the sermons, and I hope it’s soul-enriching.

“I hope there’s words that will just echo and resonate, and say, ‘yes, there is empathy, there is humanity, there is hope for the world’, because I think this service is the platform that can really start to change humanity depending on the right words and – it’s a church, people of…

Teens’ Open Heavens 14 December 2017 by Pastor Adeboye – Proof Of Love

Teens’ Open Heavens 14 December 2017 by Pastor Adeboye - Proof Of Love

Topic: Proof Of Love [Thursday 14, December 2017]

Memorise: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

Read: John 21:15-19

15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.

19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

Bible In One Year: 2 Thessalonians 1-3. Hymn: Sing Hymn 3: Deeper, Deeper in the Love

MESSAGE:

The Bible teaches Christian to love God. The Bible also teaches that such love should be expressed in worship and practical service. One of the most important lessons that the Bible teaches on love is that love in unconditional, and that the ultimate test of love is sacrifice. Therefore, any declaration of love that is devoid of sacrifice is questionable (John 3:16).

When you are genuinely in love, making sacrifices for the one you love will be a thing of pleasure and not a burden. Jacob was in love with Racheal and asked her father what he must do to marry her. Rachael’s father told him to serve for seven years and he willingly did so. Because of his love, seven years were like seven days to him. When he was deceived, he yet agreed to serve another seven years for his heartthrob (Genesis 29:18-28). No price is too much to pay for the one you love. Sacrifice helps to gauge your love for God. We can say God loves us exceedingly because He was prepared to part with His only begotten Son. What do you have to show for your love for God?

Prayer Point: Father, please help me to fully appreciate Your sacrificial love for me.

Sing Hymn 3: Deeper, Deeper in the Love

1. Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus
Daily let me go;
Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,
More of grace to know.

Refrain:
Oh, deeper yet, I pray,
And higher every day,
And wiser, blessed Lord,
In Thy precious, holy Word.

2. Deeper, deeper, blessed Holy Spirit,
Take me deeper still,
Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,
And His perfect will.

3. Deeper, deeper! though it cost hard trials,
Deeper let me go!
Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,
Let me fruitful grow.

4. Deeper, higher, every day in Jesus,
Till all conflict past,
Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image
Perfected at last.

5. Deeper, deeper in the faith of Jesus,
Holy faith and true;
In His pow’r and soul exulting wisdom
Let me peace pursue

DCLM Daily Manna 14 December, 2017 by Pastor Kumuyi – Irresistible Cry Of Faith

Topic: Irresistible Cry Of Faith — Thursday December 14, 2017.

Text: Luke 18:31-43

Key Verse: “And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me” (Luke 18:39).

“Three boys gave their definition of faith. One said, “Faith is taking hold of God”. The second said, “Faith is holding on to God”. And the third said, “Faith is not letting go”. Each boy was right. “Doubt sees the obstacles, Faith sees the way! Doubt sees the darkest night, Faith sees the day! Doubt dreads to take a step, Faith soars on high! Doubt questions, ‘who believes’, Faith answers “I believe”.

The story of the blind man by the road to Jericho has instructive lessons to teach the believers today. He would not allow his condition of blindness get in the way of his vision or make him yield to inner “shortsightedness”. He demonstrated unrelenting FAITH for being: Focused even though sitting by the road side with many passing by him; he was able to single out the Saviour’s steps and grabbed the opportunity to get his healing.

Attentive: for he was careful to discern the change in the voices around and asked what was going on. Intelligent as he was intuitive enough to raise his voice to the level that would draw the attention of the great Physician. Tenacious as the people’s instruction that he should hold his peace could not stop his mouth from crying out the more until he was able to draw the attention of Jesus; Humble to cry to be heard. The blind man got his desired miracle. He neither refused to accept his predicament as final nor was he satisfied with the life of perpetual begging by the way side.

He would not allow the opinion of people around him to stand in the way or be coerced into silence. Though without sight, his inner vision and intelligence made him use his mouth to shout aloud for his miracle. He remained focused to the end, being specific about what he wanted. Do not allow your situation or people around to coerce you into silence, cry out to God when the need arises, and your miracle is sure.

Thought for the day: God rewards the diligent seeker.

St Helen’s Bishopsgate threatens Church of England boycott

St Helen’s Bishopsgate said a successor to former Bishop of London Richard Chartres who supports same-sex marriage would be met with “unavoidable avoidance”.

Rector William Taylor told his congregation his first question to the next Bishop of London, who is yet to be named, would be whether he’s willing “declare as sin what God calls sin”.

The leader of the St Helen’s, which regularly attracts 2,000 to its four Sunday services, said “avoidance” of believers who accept “what the Bible calls sexual immorality” is legitimate.

In a sermon, Rector William Taylor endorsed the stance Richard Chartres took on the issue, adding: “We now wait to see what the new Bishop of London’s views are.

“My first question to him or her will be: ‘Are you prepared to openly to declare as sin what God calls sin and to summon all people to repentance and to do so publicly?’

“If the answer is ‘no’ then there is an ‘unavoidable avoidance’ for us all.”

After final interviews for the new Bishop of London concluded last week, Downing Street will be asked to approve any name put forward.

Premier has approached St Helen’s Bishopsgate for a comment.
