Ex-colonel denies role in massacre of Spanish priests in El Salvador

Two lawyers familiar with the proceedings said Inocente Orlando Montano told a Spanish National Court judge on Monday that no mention of plans to assassinate the priests was made during a November 15 1989 meeting he attended.

Father Ignacio Ellacuria and five other Jesuit priests were killed the next day along with their housekeeper and her daughter.

Fr Ellacuria was mediating talks at the time to end the Salvadoran civil war.

The United States extradited Montano to Spain last week to face charges in the deaths of the five priests who were Spanish citizens.

He was El Salvador’s vice minister for public security during the 1980s.

Belk Stores Decide to Allow Salvation Army Bell-ringers after All

Belk Stores Decide to Allow Salvation Army Bell-ringers after All

After an outcry from customers, Belk department stores have reversed their decision to ban Salvation Army bell ringers this holiday season.

Conservative political commentator Todd Starnes previously reported that Belk had banned the Salvation Army bell ringers. The decision was expected to impact the Salvation Army with a $1 million loss.

Belk had planned to replace the bell ringers with a “social impact program.”

Customers soon began responding to Belk’s decision, posting on Facebook and Twitter their disapproval and criticism, and calling on Belk to bring the bell ringers back.

“We believe that a lot of Belk’s customers align with the Salvation Army’s views. We believe in saying ‘Merry Christmas’ because we believe Jesus is absolutely the reason for the season,” Lt. Rob Dolby, of the Salvation Army, told Starnes.

Following the outcry from customers, Belk reversed their decision, and a company spokesperson stated that the Salvation Army is “always going to be a part of our community strategy in the future.”

“During the process of making that commitment even stronger with our home for the Holidays campaign, we mistakenly left out the Salvation Army at some of our stores, the spokesperson continued. “We have fixed that as we know our customers are passionate about the Salvation Army.”

Gloucester Cathedral’s £6m renovation won’t be done by Christmas

The £6m project will instead be finished next year as the BBC reports human remains, archaeology and delays in a limestone delivery from France are being blamed for the delay.

While local traders have said the work on the outside of the building that was meant to be completed by September, has put off visitors coming by coach, the Cathedral is still encouraging people to attend.

On the Gloucester Cathedral website it states: “This year is an exciting one in Gloucester Cathedral’s history as we embark on a major £6.3 million project, Pilgrim, which will transform the car park into a beautiful public space, fully restore the 15th century Lady Chapel and turn the Cathedral into a ‘greener’, more accessible place for everyone.

“Until spring 2018, a visit to the Cathedral will look and feel a little different both inside and out. As building work takes place, the doors will be kept open but access to parts of the building will be restricted at different times to allow work to continue and to keep our visitors safe.”

Last month the team working on the Cathedral promised that it would be “done and dusted” by 3rd December.

It has since been announced the work has been halted over Christmas and will not restart until January.

Kristin Chenoweth Draws on Her Faith to Give Voice to a Mouse in ‘The Star’

Kristin Chenoweth Draws on Her Faith to Give Voice to a Mouse in ‘The Star’

Actress Kristin Chenoweth never really had thought about what the animals in the Christmas story must have felt, she said.

They’ve always been there — in the text of Luke’s Gospel, in carols like “Away in a Manger” and “The Friendly Beasts,” and in Nativity sets brought down from the attic every December.

But she said she only needed to look as far as her own dog, Thunder, to understand why the producers of “The Star” decided to make a  movie of the first Christmas from the vantage point of four-legged creatures. Thunder “knows what kind of day I’m having, right? He knows if it’s a good day or a bad day, and those animals did, too.”

Chenoweth gives voice to a mouse named Abby in the animated retelling of Jesus’ birth in theaters this holiday season.

“The Star” connected with her own faith, she said. Chenoweth grew up in a Southern Baptist church and now identifies as a “nondenominational” Christian who is “accepting of everyone.”

“When I heard the story, what it was, (I thought) this is what I believe. I do believe in the birth of Christ and who he was when he walked the earth, so, yeah, this is something that is easy for me to do.”

“The Star” has been in the Top 10 at the box office since it opened the weekend before Thanksgiving, according to Box Office Mojo.

The animated movie stars Steven…

Christian Church Is Dealing With Culture That Is ‘Under Sexual Assault by the Evil One’

(Photo: Passion 2013 Conferences)Popular speaker and author Beth Moore gives a Bible study to 60,000 students about the significance and symbolism in the Lord’s Supper at Passion 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday, January 9, 2013.

Christian speaker and author Beth Moore has warned that the Christian church has to find how to deal with a culture that is “under sexual assault by the evil one,” in the face of mass revelations of sexual assault and harassment from every corner of society.

“We, the church, are dealing with the fall-out of a culture that is, in effect, under sexual assault by the evil one. Never forget: God’s plan for the repentant is ALWAYS restoration. Even the most spiritual can be had. (Gal.6:1) Fallenness does not always indicate fraudulence,” Moore said Monday on Twitter.

In a follow-up post she added: “Fallenness always indicates foolishness. And, make no mistake. We can all be fools. These are days of satanic seduction. We must humbly submit ourselves to ongoing accountability, sanctification and fortification. A Christlike seriousness regarding repentance & restoration BOTH.”

The evangelist and founder of Living Proof Ministries was one of a number of Christian leaders, along with hosts of other women, to share their stories of abuse back in…

Railway chaplain fears for station staff following fare increase announcement

The average cost of a train ticket in Britain will rise by 3.4 per cent on 2nd January, which will see a 12-month season ticket from Brighton to London increased by nearly £150.

Liam Johnston, a railway chaplain and chief executive of the Railway’s Mission told Premier it is wrong for railway staff to be blamed for fare increases.

Speaking during Premier’s News Hour, he said: “Everything is out of their control.

“They’re just there to ensure that people embark and disembark safely from the trains and yet they’re the ones that bear the brunt of it.”

The Rail Delivery Group insists only 3 pence in every pound spent by rail travelers ends up as profit.

Johnston said he can understand why people will feel frustrated by it becoming more expensive to travel.

He said: “We do understand that these times where there is less money in people’s pockets, there is a lot of financial pressure, which creates uncertainties and anxieties in people’s lives.”

However, he called for Christians to be praying for railway staff who are simply “just doing their jobs”.

Johnston went on to say: “We need to take on a responsibility for praying for all of the people who are front-line – not just on the railways, but whether it’s the police or shop workers or anybody.

“We need to pray for these people who have to deal with the frustration that other people face and will take out on them.”

Meanwhile, the latest annual increase in Britain’s…
