Supreme Court to Hear Case of Christian Cakeshop Owner Today

The Supreme Court will hear the case today of the Colorado Christian baker who refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.

Oral arguments will start today in the controversial case.

The ruling is expected to set a precedent for whether the government can require businesses, organizations and individuals to act in spite of their religious beliefs.

In 2012, Masterpiece Cakeshop owner Jack Phillips refused to make a same-sex wedding cake for a couple, violating Colorado’s antidiscrimination law.

A state appeals court denied his free speech claim and the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case.

Supporters of the Christian baker say with Neil Gorsuch now on the court, ““there is some reason for optimism that the Court might narrowly find for Masterpiece Cakeshop,” Christian historian Thomas Kidd recently wrote for The Gospel Coalition. “If they do not, it will be a devastating blow to a number of Christian business people who have been disciplined under similar circumstances.

“A decision against Masterpiece Cakeshop would also raise more questions, such as whether a state can force Christian adoption agencies to place children with same-sex couples.”

According to a Pew Research Center survey, 49 percent of American believe that wedding vendors should be required to serve same-sex couples. In comparison, 48 percent said those vendors should be able to refuse…

Donald Trump embraces prayer, says US Vice President

Vice President Mike Pence (pictured below) said the leader who has a “heart of gratitude for evangelical Christians” in the US has been “very humbled” by believers who pray for him.

Speaking with the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network on Monday, he said: “The sweetest words the President and I ever hear, and we hear them a lot, are when people grab us by the hand and say, ‘we’re praying for you.’

Mr Trump described the “real spirit” of Christmas as knowing “we are a child of God”, while switching on lights at the National Christmas tree in Washington DC on Thursday.

In recent months, several women have come forward to accuse the US President of sexual assault – all claims he denies.

Mike Pence, himself an evangelical believer, also told CBN: “I’ve been with this President in the Oval Office with religious leaders.

“When people have asked to pause for a moment of prayer and the President readily embraces that. I think he’s always very humbled and grateful by the support of believers.”

Donald Trump incurred criticism from the Archbishop of Canterbury Most Rev Justin Welby last week when the Anglican leader rebuked him over his attitudes towards women and his decision to retweet far-right Twitter posts.

San Diego Opens Tents for the Homeless to Contain Hepatitis A Outbreak

Reuters/Mike Blake

Rows of tents are seen at the city’s works yard as the city of San Diego opens a transitional camp area for homeless people following a hepatitis A breakout in San Diego, California, U.S., October 9, 2017.

San Diego recently opened the first of three industrial tents that will provide temporary housing to homeless people as part of the city’s efforts to contain the hepatitis A outbreak that is currently spreading across California.

The two other tents will be opened sometime later this month. Each tent will be able to house 350 single men and women. With over 3,000 homeless people living in San Diego, the city hopes to get these people off the streets and contain the hepatitis A outbreak.

The San Diego Housing Commission and City Council have allocated $6.5 million so that the tents will be operational for at least seven months. Three providers — The Alpha Project, Father Joe’s Villages and Veterans Village of San Diego — will provide basic services, including mental health care, medical assistance and housing navigators, to those who are admitted to the tents.

The housing program is a temporary solution with homeless people slated to only stay for 120 days. About 65 percent are expected to move into permanent housing.

San Diego’s industrial tents, which follow the 200-capacity campgrounds set up in October, is the city’s response to the hepatitis A outbreak that has spread at an alarming rate.

According to the California Department of Public Health, the state is currently experiencing the largest person-to-person hepatitis A outbreak in the United States since the…

Lung Cancer Drug Shocks and Kills HIV in Patient’s Blood

REUTERS/Athit PerawongmethaA nurse tests a blood sample during a free HIV test at a blood tests party, part of a campaign to prevent HIV infection among male same-sex couples, in Bangkok September 20, 2014.

A drug for treating lung cancer may one day be used in curing HIV.

While science has yet to come up with a cure for HIV/AIDS, experts are hoping that a lung cancer drug, Nivolumab, may prove itself to be the answer to those suffering from the disease. This came after a 51-year old incognito French patient suffering from both lung cancer and HIV was given the drug after his first treatment for lung cancer failed to work.

According to reports, the number of copies of HIV found in the incognito patient’s blood rose when he was administered Nivolumab, prompting scientists to believe that the drug may have helped in exposing the hiding places of the HIV. As the virus became more visible, they became vulnerable to conventional immune system attacks, and, at the end of the treatment, the number of the HIV virus copies in the said patient’s blood dropped again.

Nivolumab is also called Opdivo and is considered as a checkpoint inhibitor, which reveals tricky tumors containing proteins on their surface and tells a person’s immune system not to attack them. Although the drug can also block the message the immune cells receive from the tumor cells, the drug enables the immune system to recognize cancer cells just the same.

Researchers suspect that Nivolumab may have worked on the patient’s case through a process dubbed as “shock-and-kill,” which means that it may have spurred the HIV within the…

Detective says priest ‘delayed’ child sex abuse investigation

Fr Leo Chamberlain was the head teacher of the Roman Catholic boarding school, Ampleforth College between 1992 and 2003.

He was questioned on Monday on whether he had interfered with the police’s investigation into a case of child sexual abuse by speaking to one of the alleged victims at his school before the police did.

He said that he spoke to the parents of a boy, who were abroad, over the phone and that “the child didn’t want to speak to anyone”.

The independent inquiry heard from Father Chamberlain that the child did not wish to make a statement and that his parents “did not feel a prosecution would serve any beneficial purpose”.

It was pointed out that he could be seen as controlling the investigation because he took the matter to social services and not to the police straight away.

Detective Chief Inspector Honeysett, who was involved at the time, was also interviewed.

Honeysett said he did not trust Fr Chamberlain and added: “The issue was largely around the delay in the police becoming involved.

“He didn’t accept that there was a problem with the delay. His approach was that they had become aware of the incident through a third party.”

He went on to say that he thought it was innappropriate that the staff at Ampleforth College approached the victim and “made inquiries themselves”.

The hearing continues.

Christmastime Worsens Depression of Some People, Experts Claim

REUTERS/Brian SnyderResidents dig out following a winter snow storm in the Boston suburb of Wakefield, Massachusetts, U.S. February 13, 2017. Some people suffer from SAD (seasonal affected disorder) at wintertime due to the lack of sunlight.

While Christmastime is dubbed as the most wonderful time of the year, experts claim that it may be the exact opposite for some people.

There is no denying that Christmastime is one of the most looked-forward-to dates of the year. Apart from the festive holiday decorations, sprawling gifts under the tree, and the sumptuous culinary creations on the dinner table, it is also the time of year when families gather for a joyous reunion. However, according to Dr. Toni Goodykoontz, assistant professor in the West Virginia University School of Medicine and medical director of the Chestnut Ridge Center Acute Adolescents Program, Christmastime can also worsen the depression that some people already feel.

Goodykoontz explained that symptoms of anxiety and depression are aggravated during the holidays, especially if someone has recently lost a loved one. In others, though, the condition only gets worse because of unrealistic expectations.

“There’s this kind of fantasy or kind of Hallmark Channel sort of idea of what Christmas and holidays are like, where everyone gets along and problems always get worked out and solved. And, in fact, for many people, our lives aren’t like that and things don’t turn out like a holiday movie. When it doesn’t measure up, as no one ever really does, there’s a lot of guilt and disappointment,” Julie Bozarth, director of therapy and…

Were the Three Wise Men Really Kings?

REUTERS/Eloy AlonsoA man dressed as one of the Three Kings greets people during the Epiphany parade in Gijon, Spain January 5, 2017.

While the first Christmas story is never complete without the mention of the Three Wise Men, it is debated whether the last visitors of the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem were really kings or simply philosophers.

The end of the Christmas season is referred to as the Epiphany, which is also known as the feast of The Three Wise Men. While some churches observe the feast on the first Sunday of January, many still observe it on January 6, which is also considered to be the day to take down the Christmas decors. However, despite the familiarity with the names of the Three Wise Men, many are still unsure whether they were really kings as the book of Matthew in the Bible refers to them as Magi.

It is argued that the Magi were considered kings despite being astrologers by practice. However, others opine that it does not make sense to label Magi as kings as Herodotus’ accounts of them in history describe them as conniving political figures vying for royal power and were consulted by various kings in the ancient times because of their abilities to interpret omens, signs, and the stars.

However one prefers to collectively call Balthazar, Melchor, and…
