Defender of the faith defends his integrity

Ravi Zacharias is one of the leading defenders of Christianity in our generation.

Born and raised in India, he was an atheist until the age of seventeen, when he tried to commit suicide by swallowing poison. At the hospital, a Christian worker brought him a Bible and asked his mother to read to him from John 14. When he heard verse nineteen, “Because I live, you also will live,” he committed his life to Christ.

In 1966, he immigrated with his family to Canada, where he earned an undergraduate degree and a Masters of Divinity. He has been active in evangelism and apologetics for many decades, speaking in more than seventy countries and some of the world’s most prestigious universities.

His ministry now has fifteen offices around the world and a global team of speakers. He has authored or edited more than twenty-five books on theology, apologetics, comparative religion, and philosophy. He has been married to his wife, Margie, for forty-five years.

A surprising headline

I have read his books and appreciated his ministry for many years. That’s why this Christianity Today headline was such a shock: “Ravi Zacharias Responds to Sexting Allegations, Credentials Critique.”

The second accusation is that Zacharias has used the title “Dr.” even though he has no earned doctorate. He has received numerous honorary doctorates, a fact that has led publishers and ministries to refer to him as a “doctor.” One claimed that he “holds three doctorate degrees.”

His ministry explains that “neither Ravi nor his ministry has ever claimed he had an earned doctorate.” His team will work to clear up any confusion regarding his credentials in the future.

The first allegation is the focus of my concern today.

According to a statement Zacharias released Sunday, he was speaking at a conference in Canada in October 2014. There he met a couple who expressed interest in his ministry. The wife asked him to reach out to her husband because he had questions…

Be ‘blessed’ by volunteering, Christian charity recommends

The recommendation came as International Volunteer Day is observed worldwide on Tuesday to celebrate volunteerism.

Jacob Quagliozzi, director of the Christian housing charity Housing Justice, told Premier why more Christians should volunteer.

He explained: “We quite often hear volunteers talk about them feeling blessed… from their work and a spirit of teamwork and… solidarity that comes from working in… a shelter environment.

“There must be something to it because we’ve got so many people who come back year after year and give two or three hours a week to sit with people who they probably don’t know and it can be a bit uncomfortable at first but there’s something that keeps people coming back.”

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJw8MHia_RI]

The United Nations designated day’s theme this year is #VolunteersActFirst. Here. Everywhere.

It recognises the positive solidarity of volunteers around the world who answer calls for help in times of crisis, helping save lives and supporting those who want to continue living their lives with dignity tomorrow.

Mr Quagliozzi, told Premier it’s important to create the right type of environment for young people to be encouraged to give up their free time for others.

He said: “It’s about finding the right and appropriate things for young people to volunteer in and causes which appeal to young people.

“And making sure that we put all of the infrastructure in place to make sure it’s a safe place and a secure place for them to volunteer in and they can really get…

New Research Finds Surprising Trend Among Young Evangelicals .

Older American evangelicals love Israel—but many younger evangelicals simply don’t care, according to a new survey from Nashville-based LifeWay Research.

Three-quarters (77 percent) of evangelicals 65 and older say they support the existence, security and prosperity of Israel. That drops to 58 percent among younger evangelicals, those 18 to 34.

When Should Holiday Decors be Up and Taken Down?

REUTERS/Ints KalninsPeople gather near the Christmas tree at Cathedral square in Vilnius, Lithuania, December 23, 2015.

While many people already have their Christmas decors in place, there are some who have yet to decorate for the holidays. But, when should people really put up their Christmas decors?

It is common for many Americans to decorate their houses for Christmas between the day after Thanksgiving Day and the first Day of December, although some decide to do things earlier. For instance, actress Jennifer Garner revealed in an Instagram post that her house gets Christmas-ready beginning the first day of November.

Among the many Christmas decorations that people have, there is no denying that the Christmas tree is the most popular. With more and more people opting for the artificial fir tree as their Christmas centerpiece, putting up the holiday tree can be done much earlier without having to worry about the tree wilting even before Christmas arrives.  However, it is said that during the Roman times, people had to wait until midday on Christmas Eve before decorating their trees, as, after all, they were using cut real fir trees.

Most British people, though, wait for the beginning of Advent before putting up their Christmas trees. Contrary to chocolate Advent calendars, the season of Advent does not begin on the first day of December. Rather, it is a season that begins on the first of the four Sundays before Christmas. Hence, this year, the season of Advent began last Sunday, December 3.

Apparently, there are no strict rules as to when people should put up their Christmas ornaments….

How Being Nice Can Lead to Bad Decisions

    Podcast Episode #386

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio

Decisions have to be made in the church. Unfortunately our desire to be nice and avoid hurting someone’s feelings can often lead to either a bad decision or simply not making one that’s needed.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

    • Christian organizations should be better stewards of resources than any other organization.
    • Most people know when a change in personnel needs to be made in a local church.
    • Sometimes we are just too nice that we are unwilling to confront sin.
    • Things in the church will be so different 5-10 years from now. Many churches are not ready for this change.
    • “Being nice” is not always the best thing to do—especially when it leads to poor decisions.
    • Do you want a job or do you want to make a difference? Making a difference involves making hard choices.
    • Make the right decisions—not the most expedient ones.

The seven reasons being nice can lead to bad decisions are:

    1. We don’t make a needed personnel decision.
    2. We are unwilling to confront sin.
    3. We won’t eliminate a weak program or ministry.
    4. We are unwilling to make tough decisions on facilities.
    5. We compromise the Word of God.
    6. We let volunteers continue in positions where they should not.
    7. We make bad financial choices.

Powerful Video Calls Out UN ‘Expert’ Advocating Prenatal Eradication of Down Syndrome Babies .

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZvrA4CEcyg?wmode=Opaque&hd=1&w=618&h=340]

Abortion silences the voiceless before they can even speak. When a U.N. “expert” argued for the prenatal eradication of disabled children, a young woman with Down Syndrome refused to remain silent. Her life and words are a powerful testament to why every child deserves to live.

In a hearing before the United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC), Mr. Ben Achour, a UNHRC expert, testified that the right to life “does not mean that we have to accept to let a disabled fetus live.” Fumbling through…

HDR Video Support Coming To Chrome For Android Soon

REUTERS / Stephen LamSundar Pichai, senior vice president of Google Chrome, speaks during the Google I/O Conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on June 28, 2012.

Google Chrome for Android will soon join YouTube, Netflix, and Google Play Movies on the list of apps that can support HDR (High-Dynamic-Range imaging) playback. The new information comes from two recent updates that were recently spotted on Chromium Gerrit.

The first of these commit demonstrates that the Chrome app will be able to take the VP9 HDR metadata from the video container and pass it to MediaCodec. As for the second, it says it will be able to set color space and HDR metadata in android.media.MediaFormat. In other words, it will be played back if the device supports it.

This means that while the app itself is capable of HDR playback, it will only do so on HDR-capable devices. Also, users will have to look out for videos with the HDR tag which are also in short supply at the moment. At least with Chrome for Android, users will be able to scour the entire internet for these videos.

For those looking for HDR-capable devices, Samsung’s flagship devices – the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, and Galaxy S8 Plus – currently have the feature as does Sony Xperia XZ1, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium. The LG G6 and LG V30 are also on the list of HDR-capable devices, a list which is expected to grow as more manufacturers incorporate the feature in their future devices.

HDR amplifies the color and contrasts significantly compared to standard dynamic range. This offers a more realistic picture similar to those experienced through…

The Long History of Christmas Tree

REUTERS/Carlos BarriaPresident Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump attend the National Christmas Tree Lighting and Pageant of Peace ceremony last December 1, 2017.

While most people who celebrate Christmas put up a Christmas tree as their centerpiece for the holiday season, not so many people are aware of the history of the tradition. Nonetheless, history records reveal that the practice of putting up a decorated fir tree for Christmas actually started way back then what most people think.

History records claim that the use of fir trees at wintertime was a way to give warmth and hope to people, specifically to the ancient Romans and Egyptians. It is believed that the bright hue of the plants, such as palm rushes and evergreen boughs, served as a reminder to them that other plants would grow again when spring and summer returned.

Apart from being a reminder of the coming spring and summer, some ancient people and cultures also believed that evergreens were a symbol of everlasting life and had the abilities to shoo evil spirits and illnesses away. This gave rise to the tradition of hanging evergreen boughs above doorways and even inside the homes.

Although unconfirmed reports claim that the first ever Christmas tree was spotted in London back in the 14th century, it is said that it was only a one-time trend as decorated fir trees did not return to Britain until the 19th century.

It is also believed that the German settlers in Pennsylvania were the ones who introduced the Christmas tree tradition to America in the 1820’s. After all, back in the 17th century, there had already been…
